@kml636: yes. Right around 5 weeks, she went from nursing 2.5 hours total per day to 2 hours. Now she is 8 weeks and its 1.5 hours. They become much more efficient...I actually like breastfeeding now. I never thought I'd say that.

@kml636: My little guy is 8 weeks old today (umm where did the time go?) and his nursing sessions are still about 20-30 minutes, but he's only nursing 6-7 times per 24 hour period. During the day I often wake him up from naps (mostly so he doesn't sleep too long) to nurse him. During the day we go 3-4.5 hours between sessions and at night it is longer.

Is anyone cloth diapering full time yet? We are just starting to use our OS diapers now that our little guy is bigger. We were using a diaper service for the first several weeks, but we are ending that this weekend and handling it all on our own. I wasn't sure I have enough diapers so I ordered several more bumgenius 4.0s and elementals from the cottonbabies seconds sale. I haven't been keeping track of the number of diaper changes in a day, but I feel like it is stil a lot. Plus we've been using disposables at night time and will probably continue this for some time.

I think I jinxed myself with my last comment on the improved sleep we had seen over the past weekend. I feel like we've taken a huge step back over the past few days. Not sure if it has to do with being away from home for a couple nights or if it's something else.

Nursing had been going so well for the prior couple weeks (although she does want to feed every two hours), but she's now started to fuss and get all worked up while nursing - especially at night. It's been frustrating for both of us and, maybe it's all in my head, but I feel like it's affecting our bonding. Sleep has also been tough the past few nights. She has been really hard to put down, but could sleep in our arms all day and night.

I'm starting to feel like a giant failure and it sucks!! Not only can't keep my baby happy while meeting the basic need of feeding, I can't seem to keep up with anything around the house. Okay, enough of my pity party...

@SLR: hang in there! My baby only sleeps in my arms, so I have no advice there. I decided we both need sleep - so while he sleeps in my arms, I sleep too. Ideal? Probably not, but it's preferable to being exhausted.

I also have given up on the house - it's a disaster. Oh well! DH helps with the laundry and I take care of the kitchen while the baby is in a carrier, but beyond that, it doesn't happen.

Good luck and let it go if it's not happening!

@ChelseaRose: baby's thighs are still too skinny for cloth. A few more pounds and we might be there.

@SLR: hang in there! You are not a failure! Make sure you keep your stress level down and keepy yourself fed and hydrated to keep up your milk supply. Baby's fussiness will get better! Is it growth spurt time?

Baby Charlotte is a month old today! I started reading the Milk Memos which is a book written by moms all about continuing to breastfeed after returning to work full time. It is really great so far.

She's doing great. Starting to get nice and chubby. Her one month well check is tomorrow. And then DH will be home for another 4 day weekend! Have some family here visiting today and our new sectional couch is being delivered today

@SLR: mine is also getting fussy nursing... Out of nowhere. No idea why. @ChelseaRose: I'm starting to when we are home. I'm using bum genius 4.0's I got on eBay.

My little guy got his two month shots today. He screamed a little, but then calmed down pretty quickly. I didn't even have to nurse him immediately like I was planning to. My mom came with to support me because I was having a hard time with it. We took him home after, I nursed him, and then he went down for a nap. They offered to give him Tylenol there and I let them because we don't have any at home. I picked some up just now at CVS (baby is home with my mom) to have on hand for later.

@SLR: you are NOT a failure. I may have said this somewhere else but my LO fusses at the breast sometimes. I've noticed it tends to happen when my breast is too full. Try pumping for a couple minutes first.. That usually helps me.

@Mrs. Tricycle: the trikester is a little peanut compared to my guy. I didn't feel like they fit that well until he was 10-12lbs. Even now they all look so big and bulky on him.

hey mamas! hope you all had a good holiday!

ours was low key, but perfect! we had both sets of gparents over, MIL cooked dinner and FIL dressed up as santa claus!

then we made an appearance at my cousin's to see my extended family, and we had my friends come visit too

dh goes back to work in a week, so i've been slowly getting ready for that change... we also have been weaning ourselves from leaning on my mom coming over to help! ... (she is over tonight though!)... we've def been spoiled on this front..

A has been growing and growing and our schedules are getting better and better... but last night was super hard. I've been fighting a bad migraine for the last two days and last night he was up ever 2-3 hours (he usually sleeps 4-5 hour stretches)... and my head was just pounding!

I've tried a couple NB sized AIOs, but we're still using disposies... I think next week I'll start trying the CDs during the day... A is right around the 10 lbs mark... so we'll see...

Where do your LOs sleep for naps and for nighttime sleep?

LO sleeps in the swing or bouncer for naps... and has been sleeping in the nb lounger at nighttime (me, dh, or my mom) sleeps in the living room with him. We're hoping to transition to the crib in a month or two

  15. ChelseaRose

    persimmon / 1161 posts

@mrsjyw: My little guy is in the crib for naps (since about 5 weeks) and night (since about 2 weeks) and he's 8 weeks old. He started taking much better and longer naps when I started putting him in the crib for them. Most naps are 1.5-2 hours and then I have to wake him up to change him and feed him. He didn't nap as well when I didn't put as much effort into getting him to nap. When I let him fall asleep in the Boppy lounger or the bouncer he'd only nap for an hour or less. Now it is more predictable and I can get more done during his naps.

@mrsjyw: he sleeps in a travel bassinet in the crib or on us as a last resort

I am pretty sure I have the only anti swing baby we have the snugs bunny bouncer and swing and
Mamaroo swing and he has never fallen asleep in any and will only tolerate ten minutes max in any of them!!

@scg00387: A hates the swing too, she hates anything that isn't our arms, lol.

@SLR: You're not a failure at all! I often feel anxious about her feeding or sleep changes then I come on here and see you are all experiencing the same. A is fussy feeding sometimes and I can never figure out why, I think sometimes it's a flow issue.

We weaned from the nipple shield this week but omg my nipples are dying! I can't believe they ever gave me any pleasure, they're evil!!!

  19. ChelseaRose

    persimmon / 1161 posts

@scg00387: My little guy has never been in a swing because I never bothered to buy one. I figured that if I really needed a swing is just get it after he was here. We've made it two months without one so I doubt we will get one now. If we ever have a second child maybe we will buy or borrow one.

Thanks ladies...I know it will get better! Em has continued to be fussier than usual - when she's awake that is. It seems like she still wants to sleep all day long. And her nursing has still been wacky the past couple days. She's acting like she wants to nurse and will root around and start to latch on, but then will gag, back off, and fuss. Best way to describe it is that it's like part of her is saying yes and another part of her is saying no. She had been nursing every two hours before, so perhaps this is the start of her wanting to space them out a bit more. (I hope!!!)

Are you guys getting stir-crazy at all? I haven't been getting out a whole lot since it's cold and I don't really want to deal with holiday crowds. But it's starting to drive me a bit nuts. We are planning to go to dinner with some friends tonight and will be bringing Em with, so I'll get to rejoin the world for a few hours!

The days (and weeks) really are flying by though. I'm already dreading the day she goes to daycare.

  21. SLR

@scg00387: We just picked up our swing this weekend. My sister gave us their old one and this was the first chance we had to get it. Each time she has been in there we got a different reaction. The first time, she fell asleep but wanted out after ten minutes or so. The second time, she wasn't having it at all. And the third, she was alert and content for about five minutes before wanting out.

@mrsjyw: She has been sleeping in her crib for the most part. We moved her there almost two weeks back (right around 4 weeks old). For naps, I try to put her in the crib. Occasionally she'll nap in the P&P bassinet though, and very frequently, in our arms.

  22. MamaMoose

    GOLD / squash / 13464 posts

@mrsjyw: LO was in her crib for nights and most naps. But her reflux is starting to get worse so we've been using the rock n play a lot since it keeps her upright. We tried the crib for a nap yesterday and she spit up massive amounts all over herself and the sheets. We put her in the rock n play for sleep last night and she slept NINE hours straight (10pm to 7am) with no spitting!! I'm not messing with a good thing.

@SLR: Totally stir crazy! Can not wait to be able to get out more!!! There are some things I love about having maternity leave over the holidays... But the weather and the fact that it's cold and flu season really makes it tough to get out with baby!

  23. SLR

    clementine / 824 posts

@MamaMoose: Geez...I'm tempted to get a R&P now! Em still spits up at night too. We did put her crib mattress on an incline to see if that would help. She still spits up some, but it's mainly when she's worked up and rolling around trying to break her arms out of the swaddle. (Or if I didn't keep her upright long enough after feeding...sometimes I don't do this as long as I should in the middle of the night). But I have woken up a couple times to see her missing from the view on the monitor. The incline caused her to work her way down the crib and out of sight, so we moved it down a little.

Did your ped say anything about how long they are able to sleep in the R&P? I don't know that I'd get one if she'd only be able to use it a few more weeks (she's 5.5 weeks old now).

  24. MamaMoose

    GOLD / squash / 13464 posts

@SLR: I have friends that used the Rock n Play for months. I showed the ped pictures of her in it and he was fine with her sleeping there as long as she can't get stuck on her side. We always use the harness and strap her in really tight so she can't wiggle onto her side. We have the crib mattress on an angle as well but it doesn't work nearly as well as the RnP.

How are all the Nov babies? Lily went 7 hours between feelings last night. She didn't sleep that whole time, but it's exciting either way she is resisting napping more and more. Anyone else? I think it's normal as they get older. Almost six weeks already! Gah!

  26. DillonLion

    GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts

@SLR: we leave the house every day. I get mega depressed otherwise. We keep het covered and Texas doesn't get that cold so I'm okay with it. Can't wait for her to get her shots though and for it to be spring time

  27. DillonLion

    GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts

@kml636: baby is sleeping in longer stretches more reliably lately.

We've had generous family members in town so I've gotten entire night's of sleep 4-5 nights lately. Bliss. And then we have a rocking nursing/pumping sesh first thing in the am which sets a nice positive tone for the day

  28. immabeetoo

    honeydew / 7687 posts

@kml636: Definitely having nap resistance around here, it stresses me out! He is 5 weeks tomorrow.

Trying to figure out pumping and getting a stash going - trying to pump after feedings!

I'm home alone for 3 days next week when we get home from the inlaws and nervous about never being able to hand him off. Hoping he gets more used to being in the bouncer even just for a few minutes so I can eat and let the dog out!

  29. ChelseaRose

    persimmon / 1161 posts

@kml636: I love when they can go longer! I think it was at about six weeks that it started improving around here too.

  30. ChelseaRose

    persimmon / 1161 posts

@scg00387: I'm having a hard time figuring out when to pump. It is difficult after feedings because that is usually his alert time when he wants to "play" with me. Right now I'm only pumping in the middle of the night/early morning and I pump the side I didn't feed him on (we do one side per session). I usually get 3-5 oz this way. If he starts really sleeping through the night then I will probably just pump in the morning on whatever side he doesn't nurse on.

  31. kml636

    pomegranate / 3225 posts

@ChelseaRose: @scg00387: I pump once a day after her morning feeding. She's usually in a good mood and will sit in the bouncy seat for 15 mins but boy, what a PITA it is!

  32. Mrs. Tricycle

    blogger / pear / 1964 posts

@MamaMoose: if you're using the harness then you don't swaddle? I can't figure out how to do both...

  33. Mrs. Tricycle

    blogger / pear / 1964 posts

@ChelseaRose: have you tried pumping while he feeds? That's when I do it - it can get a little messy as I sometimes spill when I have to put the pump down to latch him back on, but it works ok.

  34. Mrs. Tricycle

    blogger / pear / 1964 posts

@kml636: no longer interested in naps here, either. Sometimes can get him to sleep in the Ergo or bouncer, but it's hit or miss. Still only getting 4 hour stretches of sleep, max.

  35. MamaMoose

    GOLD / squash / 13464 posts

@Mrs. Tricycle: I loosened the straps on the harness so I can snap it around her swaddle. She ends up propped up pretty high in the rock n play but it works. She sleeps much longer when swaddled. Last night we got an 8 hour stretch and the night before we got 9.

  36. MamaMoose

    GOLD / squash / 13464 posts

@ChelseaRose: I'm with you on having a hard time finding a good time to pump. I have to keep LO completely upright for 30 minutes after a feeding to help combat spit up so I can't do it then.

  37. ChelseaRose

    persimmon / 1161 posts

@MamaMoose: I would imagine that would make it really difficult. I'm on my own for twelve hours during the day, so it is hard to make the time. I do have 8 4oz bags of milk in the freezer and one 4oz bottle in the fridge. I can probably only store about 20-24 bags in my current freezer (one above the fridge). I don't know how much I should keep on hand. We haven't been using much pumped milk and if I do give him a bottle then I immediately pump to replace it.

  38. MamaMoose

    GOLD / squash / 13464 posts

@ChelseaRose: we don't use a ton of pumped milk (most of what I pump goes in the freezer. But I like to keep a small amount on hand in the fridge so I have the freedom to get out of the house if I want/need to. We are starting to see signs of an allergy (reflux, possible flecks of blood in her stool) so we are going to see the doc ASAP. I have a feeling I'm going to have to throw out alllll the milk I pumped which will just make me cry. I probably have about 35ounces saved up.

  39. Mrs. Tricycle

    blogger / pear / 1964 posts

@MamaMoose: that's why I'm not feezing milk right now. We went through the specks of blood last week and awful grassiness, so doing dairy elimination. Don't want to save any milk until I've been off dairy for 2 weeks. Right now I do one bottle of pumped milk before bedtime so he will take the probiotics I am using, and then tonight I'm going to try a bottle at the midnight/1:00 AM feeding because he takes a bottle so much more efficiently than he nurses - he can sip away for an hour and stil not eat much - so maybe a bottle will help.

  40. MamaMoose

    GOLD / squash / 13464 posts

@Mrs. Tricycle: we have tried bottles overnight because they are quicker (and because that way hubs can feed her) but unfortunately she ends up wanting to nurse anyway in order to get snugly and fall back to sleep. So it hasn't worked great for us. Hope you have better luck!
