@MrsRcCar: For that morning feeding, about how much cereal/baby food do you give LO? I'm struggling with S's morning solids. We tried yesterday about 2 hours after he ate and he was screaming through the whole thing. I had my dad try again today and he wasn't having it. I'm wondering if I should try what you do in the morning rather than trying to squeeze it in between 2 bottles.

@mrskc: J nurses 5 times a day (none at night). Our feeding schedule is 7am wakeup and nurse, 11am nurse, 2pm nurse, 5pm nurse, and 7:30pm 3oz pumped milk + nurse then bed at 8. So he's going on average 3 hours between feedings, with a 4 hour stretch after his big morning feeding (he's always very hungry then and I'm very full, so he eats a lot) and a smaller stretch between his evening and bedtime feed.

My ped said at his 3 month appointment that he should be drinking every 3 hours (so 5 feedings a day), and mentioned something about eventually moving to 4 feedings a day, so maybe at this age they should be having fewer but bigger feedings? I'm sticking with this schedule for now as it works for us, but he does seem like he can go longer between meals now.

@mrskc: Miss A has always been a frequent feeder and feeds at least five or six "sides" during the day plus a cluster feed before bed and one night waking. It's also really only in the last couple of weeks she's started to extend out the time between feeds and not always want to nurse when I offer although we just went through a growth spurt and she was insatiable!

FWIW i think La Leche still recommends around eight feeds a day at this age?

@2PeasinaPod: It depends day to day. Most mornings I give him 1 -1.5 ounces of cereal with maybe a .5 ounces (sometimes more) of fruit. Other days when it is all gone he looks at me like I am crazy. My ped said to follow DS's cues, he still prefers is bottle over everything but he is getting the hang of solids. This morning I ended up making more like 2 ounces of cereal and he ate about 3/4 of it. He throws such a fit if he doesn't get some solids in the morning. I failed to mention this to DH one day that I had to work and he called me like "what is wrong with our kid?1?" I was like well did you give him any cereal? He was like no...I thought we did that at lunch. I kinda laughed and filled him in.

@mrskc: I think the distraction thing is why so many EBF babies have a plateau in weight gain at around 5-6 months old! They're just too busy exploring the world and trying out all their new found skills and mobility!

@MrsRcCar: Good to know! I feel like he does need the cereal/fruit in the morning, I'm just struggling when to give it to him!

@Kemma: This makes sense. It seems like he just can't be bothered with eating and just wants to get back to trying to sit or grab things. lol

@mrskc: I commented about this on the sleep thread, but we're having a similar issue I think...LO eats every 2-3 hours, usually 2-2.5 hours. He'll eat for a few minute and then start chatting and blowing bubbles--not hungry anymore and wanting to play. And I think that's why he's wkaing up mor eat night. He's eating 7-9 times a day--more than he ate at 2 months old! I feel like we're regressing...

So I did an experiment and recorded each feed for a day and we did nine feeds today! We only feed one side at a time and we still do a night feeding between 3 and 730am. Today's schedule went as follows:

    0400, 0800 (0730 wake up), 1040, 1240, 1520, 1615, 1740, 1830 (just a wee snack feed), 1900 (1915 bed time)

I've just noticed that she now knows what I mean when I ask her if she'd like "drinks" and she's started to hold her little arms up to me to pick her up- so cute

    squash / 13764 posts

@Kemma: was that more or less feedings that you thought? We're averaging between 7 and 9 these days...he's eating more often now than when he was 3 months ago!

Ladies who have started solids, what does your feeding schedule look like? I know MrsRcCar posted hers, but I'm wondering about others...right now I try to do solids twice a day, about 45 min after he nurses. So roughly:

    7:00- nurse
    9:45- nurse
    10:30-1tbsp oatmeal or veggies
    12:00- nurse
    2:30-nurse
3:15- 1 tbsp oatmeal or veggies
    4:45- nurse
    6:30-nurse
(and then however many night wake ups he has! ).

When are you increasing the amount that your LO eats? L usually finishes the amount of solids that I prepare, so I don't know if that means he's ready for more? but it seems like a lot for his little tummy and I don't want to over feed him...

@hilsy85: here is our feeding schedule

    6:15 am: 6 oz bottle
9 am: rice cereal or 1/2 container of fruit with cereal & 6 oz bottle
    12 pm: 6oz bottle
    4 pm: 6 oz bottle
6 pm: 1/2 container of fruit or veggie with 2 Tbsp. of cereal mixed in.
    7:00 pm: 4-6 oz bottle

She's eating 28-30 oz a day and a full container of fruit/veggie with rice.

@mrskc: my LO eats 5 times a day, none at night. I nurse her in the morning at 5 am, then she gets 3 bottles of 5 oz of breastmilk at daycare ( at around 8, 11, and 2) and then I nurse her again at 6:30 as part of our bedtime routine.

@hilsy85: Here's our feeding schedule! It's pretty fluid day to day but this is a rough example

    5am- 4oz bottle
    8am- 5oz bottle
11- fruit or veggie and 5oz bottle
    2- 5oz bottle
5- fruit or veggie and 3-4oz bottle
    7- 6oz bottle

  15. hilsy85

    squash / 13764 posts

@LuLu Mom: @Running Elley: so do you give a bottle and then immediately give solids? Or vice versa?

  16. Running Elley

    coconut / 8681 posts

@hilsy85: Usually solids and then bottle here. E is still hungry when he finishes the solid food!

@Running Elley: ok but it's pretty much right after right? I wonder if I should start doing solids right after I nurse instead of waiting...

@hilsy85: Yepp I feed him the bottle in the high chair so right right after. I don't know if it's "the right way" or not!

@hilsy85: I saw you comment on the other thread. How have things been going the last couple of days? Still nursing more than usual? He's probably nursing more since he's just snacking all day.

@Kemma: The arms up. How cute. DS averages 7-8 feedings a day. He actually did better about nursing longer. We only feed one side at a time too.

We don't do solids yet, but here is yesterdays feeding schedule:
2 AM, 6:30 AM, 10:40 AM (bottle), 1 PM (only nursed 2 min), 4:45 PM, 7 PM, 7:30 PM (finally went to sleep), 10:40 PM

  20. LuLu Mom

    GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts

@hilsy85: Yep solids first then bottle in the morning, we try to hold off in the evening an hour or so for her bottle, otherwise she expects 4-6 oz. after solids and then wants another 4 before bed when she's sleepy. But sometimes she expects both!

@hilsy85: a little on the high side but it was a day we were home and she does eat less if we're out and about.

Baby girl had a slice of fresh peach yesterday, she loved it! She also ate some paper...

@Beebug: CUTIE! looks like she liked whatever you gave her - sweet potato?

how are you guys doing foods & breastmilk or formula through the day??

Our friends were visiting & they have an 8 month old and she gets 3 meals of purees a day, plus 5 or 6 bottles of formula --- seems like a lot?! Or is that normal?

We have been doing a single puree once a day in the afternoon - he only eats about an ounce (I think) of the puree in between BM.

  24. Beebug

    pomegranate / 3917 posts

@hellobeeboston: Banana was on her tray while I readied the sweet potato and a tea for me, by the time we were at this picture....everything was everywhere, lol.

We still do our normal routine of bottles, but between am and noon bottle we do cereal, and then in the afternoon if she seems up for it, we do veggies (and/or banana). I don't really count her veggies as anything at this point, she definitely isn't getting that much, lol.

She is getting 28oz/formula and 1.5/2oz of cereal (half serving of what box says for mixing, I don't think she'd get thru full amt yet)

  25. 2PeasinaPod

    pomelo / 5524 posts

@Beebug: So cute! She looks so happy!

@hellobeeboston: LO is getting cereal with purees twice a day (once in the morning and again at 6pm for dinner) and anywhere between 28-32 ounces of formula depending on how the cereal/purees went.

  26. hilsy85

    squash / 13764 posts

@hellobeeboston: L gets a serving of veggies/fruit, usually with some oatmeal after his first nap, so usually around 10/1030--we do 1oz of veggies or fruit and 1tbsp of oatmeal mixed with breastmilk. Then we do 1oz of veggies or fruit between his last nap and bedtime, usually around 5/530. He's still nursing 6-8 times a day.

  27. mrskc

@Beebug: What a cutie. Looks like she was enjoying herself.

@hellobeeboston: Ummm yeah, my kid hasn't had much solids yet. Like we've tried it twice and he didn't even eat any of it. I wouldn't stress too much right now how much he's eating. BM is still main source of nutrition. I'm doing BLW and the book suggested giving BM or formula before a solid foods feeding. It's so they fill up on that first. I imagine as our babies get older, they'll slowly eat more and more.

I think most of you know, but I decided to try out BLW. So far I've only given him some roasted sweet potato and some slices of pear. It's mostly b/c I'm being lazy. Plus, I haven't made anything this week that I felt I could give him. I figure he's not even 6 months yet, so he doesn't even need to be eating any food. I hope my ped doesn't scold me at his 6 month appt. lol

I have to admit it makes me a bit nervous letting him bite off chunks of food, but he's handling it really well. So far, he just spits it all out. Maybe I'll try giving him some steamed baby carrots today.

@mrskc: i keep remembering the saying "Food before 1 is just for fun" --- but seeing how much food my friends baby was eating made me want to see what everyone else was doing! I bet it's going to take him a little while to get used to the chunks of food --- it took J a while just to figure out purees!

@hilsy85: @2PeasinaPod: @Beebug: Thanks for sharing! i keep forgetting about cereal, i've only been doing fruits & veggies but should probably incorporate some oatmeal, or oatmeal mixed with fruit like you guys said!

    @Beebug: gorgeous!

@mrskc: I really only give Miss A her solids if it fits into her day and I have something on hand to feed her, she's six months next week so I'm planning to get more consistent soon!

  30. Beebug

    pomegranate / 3917 posts

I also need to get more consistent with feeding her cereals + veggies, not too worried yet, but know soon I really should get on it! We had a big eating day Sunday, but nothing yesterday, soon enough!!

  31. mrskc

    bananas / 9357 posts

@Kemma: I'm trying to be a bit more consistent now too.

We've now given him pork (he loved it!), squash (didn't like it), banana (so so), apple (loved!). Going to try avocado soon. My ped was ok with skipping purees and just letting him eat food. Not like it would have mattered if he wasn't ok with it. My mom and grandma have expressed their concerns with BLW. They think he's going to choke. Whatever. I knew we would get weird looks when we decided to skip purees.

  32. hilsy85

    squash / 13764 posts

@mrskc: ha yeah I'm pretty sure no one here really knows what BLW is (surprising because it's crunchy Brooklyn!). Our pedi also doesn't know what it is, so I don't plan on discussing potentially introducing real food sooner than later. Glad A is liking some foods! L loooves avocado, so I hope your guy does too!

Have you ladies tried a mesh feeder? It's great for those of us that are a bit nervous about choking--you just put the food in the mesh part and LO goes to town sucking and chewing.

I also got LO a straw cup (the zoli) because he's so obsessed with my water bottle. He loves chewing on the straw but hasn't quite gotten the hang of sucking!

  33. mrskc

    bananas / 9357 posts

@hilsy85: I thought about the mesh feeder. DH thinks it's unnecessary tho. I almost had a panic attack when DH gave him a slice of apple and he took a big chunk off of it. he just spit it out tho. But my heart sank and I was ready to scoop it out of his mouth. My DH is much more relaxed about it all.

Oh, I should get A a straw cup. He's obsessed with my straw cup and my camelbak. I want to get him a kids camelbak.

  34. hilsy85

    squash / 13764 posts

@mrskc: yeah I guess if you're going full fledged BLW it's not really necessary...makes my worrywart self feel better though! I thought about a camelbak, but I think the bite valve is still too tough for him to figure out? I like the zoli also because the straw is soft and bendable, so when they move their heads, the straw moves with them.

  35. mrskc

    bananas / 9357 posts

@hilsy85: Oh good point. I didn't realize that it had a soft, bendable straw. He goes crazy trying to grab my hard water bottle with a straw and i have to be careful, otherwise he tries to shove the straw down his throat. But he really loves chewing on my camelbak. Probably b/c he's teething? I would imagine that it would be harder to get the liquid out of it compared to the zoli.

    bumping this thread--- HELP!

Where do I start?! I'm thinking a mix of puree/BLW. Probably start with sweet potato/avocado/banana. How much/often/etc.? A is 5 months, has two bottom teeth, has been showing signs of readiness the past couple of weeks. Sits well in his high chair and tripod sitting. and grabs toys easily.

    HELP ME OCT MAMAS!

  37. MrsRcCar

    grapefruit / 4712 posts

@mrsjyw: I started N with puree's once day. After that we went from there. At meal time now I put out crackers or cheerios (mostly to keep him amused while we eat). N is going to be 7 months on May 5 and has no teeth yet....He loves solids.

  38. mrskc

    bananas / 9357 posts

@mrsjyw: I would start slow. No need to even feed him everyday. It's not nutritionally necessary at this age. We started BLW. I just roasted some sweet potatoes and gave it to him. And I've been a bit lazy about it. If we happen to have something on hand or I feel what I'm making, he can eat, then I offer it to him. He hasn't even really eaten any of the food yet. if you're going to start with purees, I imagine just a couple of tablespoons is all that's needed. I would start off offering after a nursing session so he fills up on milk not solid foods. If you're making the food, freeze in ice cube size portions. Hope that helps!

  39. LuLu Mom

    GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts

@mrsjyw: we started with rice mixed with formula for the first few days, and then introduced purees. Now we do purees with rice cereal twice a day and let her have finger foods while we eat (puffs, cherrios, ect.) It has worked out well!

  40. LemonLong

    pear / 1698 posts

My LO had her first try at solids yesterday! DH was a bit grumpy about it because he feels we need to wait until she is exactly six months (She'll be six months in 5 days!). We were at a restaurant and she was getting pretty fussy and trying to grab things off the table so I gave her some of my roasted zucchini and cauliflower off my plate. I didn't smushthem up or anything. She gobbled up the zucchini (she left the skin, which wasn't surprising since she doesn't have any teeth!) and was able to get some of the cauliflower before it got dropped on the floor. I'm so excited to start trying other foods with her!
