@singingbee: go MM! Hyla is itching to roll over.
Check out Hyla's new ride!!! It's a Bumbleride Flyer that I scored on my mom's group for...$135! It was originally $399! SCORE!

Thanks everyone for your reassurance. I am going to try to survive until we get back from our trip & then we are going to Ferberize I feel like I am breaking all the rules by sleep training at 4 months but the poor thing isn't sleeping at all. Next baby we are definitely going to have to do better about "drowsy & awake" so we don't end up here again!
@singingbee: Yay to rolling! S will roll if she has a little leverage like a blanket but if she's just flat she can only get up on her side. I can't believe you are getting teeth! Who are these kids!?

@daniellemybelle: I know! It's crazy!!! We are sleep training later this month. Dh is home the last week of the month and we are tackling it. She nurses to sleeps and uses a paci. I want her to be able to fall asleep without me nursing or both. We are using the sleep sense. I've got to work out our game plan.
@avivoca: that's soooooooo awesome!!!!! Way to go!!!!

I am SO behind on everything but wanted to update quick. We got back (me and E) from NJ on Tuesday and I AM NEVER FLYING WITH HER AGAIN. Flight there was great. Flight home they moved my seat, I got the window, she kept jerking and hitting her head, and then oh- she had the world's biggest blowout at 30k feet. NEVER. AGAIN.
She had her 4 month appt a few days early yesterday. She's MISERABLE right now from her shots. MISERABLE. Last night was also miserable. She's gettnig up an hour earlier too since our trip (the sun comes up a lot earlier in NJ than Orlando.) 5 shots yesterday and I felt they were worse than her 2 month ones.
On a good note, she's still a big girl... 55% for weight (they had 14 lbs 3.5 oz but she had just had a 3 oz bottle so I'm saying 14 lbs) and 26 inches tall (only 4 feet shorter than daddy!)
Also talked to the ped... she wants us to move E to her own room to help her sleep, and to transition her out of using a paci and start using a lovey, since her paci falling out at night wakes her up so much. She needs to learn to self soothe. Also we are supposed to put her down drowsy not asleep. So hard because she takes her bottle to fall asleep at night.
We're planning to start the no paci at night when she feels better. Will try to move her to her room in March. I might try sleep sack too after that transition since she can't wear the magic merlin suit forever. Also have to start trying to do naps in her crib instead of the swing/carseat.
She also got some anti spit up food to try (it has rice proteins in it) she's currently been ARCHING and crying all day/night so I think it's making her gassy, ped didn't feel it was from shots (the sleeping is though.) We're trying gripe water and then will try the powder kind instead of the liquid kind (got samples of both.) Hate seeing her so miserable.
Anyone have any luck or tips for these things? Very anxious about the sleep stuff.

@kjpugs: Sorry the trip was so rough! I am so nervous to fly with S next weekend I keep telling myself it can't be worse than 2 long car rides back to back... but maybe not.
LO has been in her own room from day one, though I slept in there with her on the guest bed for a while. Before this horrible regression, she really did sleep better on her own. Since E is getting so big, she might actually be more comfy in the crib than the PnP!
No other tips though. Drowsy but awake has never worked for us, and S has lost all ability to self-soothe, so we are swaddle weaning & sleep training (Ferber) soon. We are introducing a lovey, too, though. I just went through all of hers & put them over my face to find the most breathable one, haha!
Oh, and re: gassiness - LO's gas was HORRIBLE until we switched to Similac Total Comfort & Dr Brown's bottles. She is still very spitty though. Did you talk to your doctor about Zantac?
cantaloupe / 6669 posts
@singingbee: I'm glad we are not the only ones sleep training! From what I could find about Sleep Sense online, her methods seem similar to the Sleep Lady Shuffle - attended/controlled CIO. I have already tried that (sitting next to her crib) and girlfriend just looks at me screaming like, "WTF are you doing, lady?! PICK ME UP!"
We are going to do Ferber, but I'm not sure if checks will piss S off more. I just don't think I can stomach extinction at this young age I read one of Mrs. Bee's posts on the blog about the timing of sleep training & what it said about 4 month olds made me feel so guilty... but I know it's what we have to do.
grapefruit / 4862 posts
@daniellemybelle: we just switched to Similac for Spit Up (in the yellowish-green container) but while it's helped spit up, it's still HORRIBLE for her gas. I might try to call the ped and ask for samples of total comfort and sensitive (she tried sensitive as a BABY baby but her gas wasn't even close to as bad as it is now.) I also think it might be better for us to use powdered... liquid (what we've been using with the new one) seems to upset her more somehow? Thanks for the tips! I am having the same fears about lovies.
ALSO- I've always been totally ok with and supportive of sleep training. Why I let E rule my life with sleep lately? No idea. I am happy to move her into her room... just need to work on the paci thing. That's the issue- her wake ups for the paci are what kill us!!!!!!!! And by us, I mean... ME. ha.
cantaloupe / 6669 posts
@kjpugs: We used to use Sensitive until her gas got really bad, and that's when we switched. Total Comfort makes her poos disgusting but her gas is so much better. Of course, days when she has less formula, it's much better overall - cue low supply mom guilt
I know what you mean about sleep training. I always thought I would be sleep training early on. We do adhere to a strict schedule, but the CIO, I just can't handle. The one night I tried it (no plan, just let her cry 15 min) I thought I was going to be sick. I think it will be easier now that I've read Ferber's book, understand the methodology, and have a plan, though. I really recommend his book - he has a whole chapter on props like pacis. If only S would take a paci! I am her paci, haha.
pomelo / 5073 posts
@daniellemybelle: we need to get her to fall asleep on her own. I think it will be okay because she will start sucking on her thumb, but who knows.
grapefruit / 4862 posts
@daniellemybelle: interesting!! So they use paci's to help with Ferber? Or it's mentioned as an issue? I would say I'd read it but I don't even have time to read this thread let alone a BOOK. How do you do it?!?!?!
Either way, the amount of wake ups I have to put that paci back? Can't handle. I need her to discover her thumb or get over it!
cantaloupe / 6669 posts
@kjpugs: Ferber talks about how to wean props like pacis, because babies develop an association where they can't go back to sleep without it. But he says if it's working for you, there's nothing wrong with them.
I'm a SAHM right now so I have more time! Though tell that to my unwashed hair...

Oh my goodness, the 4 month sleep regression has hit us with a vengeance. At 12 weeks, she had gone from 4-5 hour stretches at night (with one glorious week of 6 hour stretches!) back to 2-3 hour stretches. Now on top of that, she is screaming bloody murder before every nap and bedtime (luckily not for night wakings though). I'm exhausted and just reminding myself to take it one day at a time, it doesn't last forever.

My baby has a virus. It's not RSV or the flu. She had an underarm temp of 101.3, and at the doctor her temporal temperature was 102.5. They had to take blood, do nose swabs, and take her rectal temperature. I lost it when they brought in the rectal thermometer because that meant she was really sick. The nurse who was taking her blood was my least favorite, but then Ms. Molly (our favorite nurse) came in. I'm glad it's not RSV or the flu, but I feel so helpless. She looks so pitiful and I know she feels bad. I wish I could stay home all the time so she wouldn't get sick so much.

@daniellemybelle: I think diarrhea would scare me even more because of the risk of dehydration. I know she would get still get sick if I stayed home, but this is her second illness since being in daycare. I have to take a sick day to stay home with her tomorrow.
Her fever came down to 99.5 once we got some Tylenol in her. She's sleeping now.

Girlfriend loves TV & I never let her watch it so I'm hoping it will enrapture her enough to stay chill. I think you said E had a blowout on your flight - where did you change her diaper? Did the cabin pressure hurt her ears? I am going to bring Tylenol.

@daniellemybelle: I am counting down the minutes until my husband gets home so I can escape. Even if it's just to walk the dog. Does that make me terrible? I have barely been able to put her down. She is so uncomfortable. Her underarm temp was 98.6, and the nurse said we have to add a degree, so there's no way we can send her to daycare tomorrow. It's my husband's turn to stay home (he can work from home) but he is starting to feel sick and I really don't want to burn a sick day or a vacation day. H has also been fighting naps, the dog is feeling neglected, and I am at my wits end.

I don't think I've posted here since I had my kid, but thought I'd leave an update
Nate had his 4 month appointment last week, and he's 15 lbs 5 oz, and 25 inches (we make chunky babies, DH and I). He was totally unfazed by his shots- DH took him, and said he fussed right afterwards, but he was totally fine the rest of the day.
He's a crappy sleeper, wake-up-wise... he'll usually sleep about 3.5-4 hours, and then wake up every 2- 2.5 hours thereafter. (We make terrible sleepers for the first year, DH and I).
However- and I have zero idea if this is nature or nurture- he's a piece of cake to get down. With my older son, I felt like there was always rocking and/or nursing to sleep... with the younger? He can be 100%, and we wrap him up in a swaddle, turn on the white noise, turn off the lights, lay him down, insert pacifier, and probably 90% of the time, we're done. Sometimes he fusses (usually if DH tries to put him down without me) and I'll pick him up and nurse him another 5 minutes to calm him down, and then we'll repeat, but somehow we totally and inadvertently ended up making "drowsy but awake" work fine for us. Maybe it's because he's the second child and he's just used to getting less attention? I have no idea.
In general though, he's a ridiculously easy baby (lest I sound like a jackass for saying that, I also have an almost-three-year-old who, while delightful, has always been a high-energy, high-opinion, exhausting child). He's smiley and happy and falls asleep easily and is super chill and content to just hang out wherever we happen to be, and almost never fusses... for me.
In one of the major differences between my oldest and my youngest, my youngest has MAJOR mommy preference. My oldest demanded constant attention, but never particularly cared where it came from, and while he was a fussy nurser, he was a champ at taking bottles and would take them from anyone. In contrast, my youngest is (according to DH) really bad at taking bottles (i.e. slow and fussy), and he has a MAJOR mommy preference. I feel pretty bad for DH, since there are times when he can't get my youngest to calm down at all, and then he just hands him to me and the baby is instantly fine. I know it gets DH down, but I'm not sure how to deal with it, other than to give it time.
Anyhow, that's about it for us- we're exhausted, but we like our kids and we're getting by

@daniellemybelle: ha. Travel tips.
Man did I feel good after my flight there. Looking back I want to laugh at myself- I had the whole row (3 seats) to myself, E was in a great mood, had poo'd that AM, and on a good feeding schedule. So it went really well. Despite a little fussiness before she napped, it was awesome. They gave her wings! I said it wasn't the BEST 2 hours of my life on the plane but it wasn't the worst either. Honestly compared to the flight home, the flight there was downright enjoyable. I loved sitting aisle, and I would lift her up to play airplane when she got fussy and she loved seeing the whole plane. Everyone in front of and behind me commented on how cute and good she was.
Flight back? Ha. They moved me from aisle to MIDDLE. Said it was a full flight so, "sorry." I cried. I waited for the guy next to me so I could ask him to switch. Turns out- other 5 seats were a family of 5. I couldn't split them up!!!!!!! So I took window. MISERABLE. Some people told me to take window and I usually prefer aisle so I didn't... let me tell you, at least for us, window sucks. I felt claustrophobic. Effie is in a jerking around stage and bumped her head lightly (enough to piss her off though) on the wall of the plane. It was harder to lift her up for airplane. We also were on a bad feeding schedule- her feed was about 30 minutes from when I got to the airport and Newark security is notoriously bad so I fed her some before. She took half a bottle. So we get on the plane and she takes the other half- and wants more. So I had to make a new bottle. Then when I had to feed her the second time on the plane it was the same deal. So while waiting for the 2nd half she FLIPPED OUT both times. Even the dad next to me didn't offer to help by say, shaking the bottle or holding her. She also started BAD teething the day before. Of course then she had the world's largest all-over-herself blowout. Jetblue had a "changing table" but it was really just a board that folds down over the toilet- no restraint, no cushion at all, NO FRILLS. It was horrible but I am glad they had something. And as I carried my poo-covered baby to the bathroom (and the seatbelt light came on) a lady said "is that the little baby making all that noise???" THROAT PUNCH. I just can't. I had nothign to say to her because I was currently convincing the flight attendant that I shouldn't have to sit down because LOOK AT THE POOP ALL OVER MY BABY.
Oh and I had zero help getting my stroller into the bag and while it was challenging alone and while wearing her, compared to the banged up nasty stroller I saw un-bagged after the flight, I was glad I bagged it.
Wearing her through security was awesome, by the way. I don't know how anyone could do it alone any other way.
Ugh I hope that "helps"... sadly I think we're just at the mercies of the airlines and our babies. I sent a complaint to JetBlue because I don't feel they should move infant-in-lap seats that SELECTED their seat when booking. No response now a week later. A-holes. Sucks because the flight there was so good.

@Lozza: awwww Nate I love the name and love hearing about him and how you all are doing! You'll have to share a few pictures! I love hearing how he differs from your other LO, I wonder that a lot, what our next child will be like and how he or she may be different from Effie. Glad to hear bedtime is easier! E does the same sleep thing sort of- one longer stretch (sometimes 4 hours, sometimes longer) and then the rest are significantly shorter. What the heck, babies!!!
cantaloupe / 6669 posts
@kjpugs: Oh wow! You are scaring me! I will at least have DH so that's a big help. We are flying Southwest though so no guarantee as far as our seats go.
I am hoping she will not need a bottle on the plane but I'm not sure how to do it if she does. I usually pre-mix formula but you can't carry on liquids right? Did you put the powder in the bottle in advance & use bottled water? Doesn't it clump if you put the powder in first? How many bottles did you bring? I was going to bring 3, and give her one before we board.
When you were at your mom's, did you make bottles individually or did you bring your formula pitcher? Last time we went to the ILs we used RTF formula but the kind we use now doesn't come in RTF. Feeding is still a touchy subject with them (they are extremely pro BFing & unhappy that we have to supplement) so I'd prefer as little hoopla making bottles as possible.
grapefruit / 4862 posts
@daniellemybelle: Oh you will have it WAY easier with DH. If B had been there it would have been a breeze, comparatively.
You can bring liquids through. I brought 3 bottles in my diaper bag that had water in them and then the formula container (by Munchkin i think) that had 3 "servings" of formula in it. You can pretty much bring anything through that's for a baby and say it's for a baby, and they just hand check it. I had them in a separate bag. They also swabbed my hands. The stroller went thru the xray on one leg and they hand checked it/ swabbed it at the other. How do you pre-mix formula? I believe it is only supposed to sit unrefrigerated for an hour before you have to toss it. Or do you mean RTF? Just curious. On the plane I fed at takeoff and landing. I poured the powder in and shook it. Not my preferred method of feeding because of the bubbles but it's all I could do on the plane and didn't seem to bother her. It's what I end up doing on the go anyway when I have to feed her away from home. I didn't bring my pitcher- I actually (this sounds silly) put it in a glass mixing bowl and whisked it gently. I would only do one bottle at a time, because my mom doesn't have a bottle warmer. I had to do them with warm water, no other choice. It sounds daunting but was actually quite quick and easy compared to having to wait for the bottle warmer! Night wakeups at my moms were less of a production than at my house! I brought 8 bottles. We have 9, but I didn't bring the one she took before we left. I am VERY glad I brought all 8. I had 3 in my diaper bag, 2 in carry on and 3 in suitcase that I checked. I didn't want to spend my vacation cleaning bottles. I just had to clean them at night, once.
I hope that info helps!!!

Hey ladies! Long time, no talk. We were in Seattle last week and same back to two feet of snow so things gave been pretty busy. Our trip, minus my intense work schedule, was great. A was awesome on the 6 hr flight out there (even passengers said he was the perfect baby). On the flight back he also did pretty well but was slightly more fussy plus to crappy napping. That said, his sleep is pretty much back to crap now that we are back. Grrrrrr. We have A's Four month appt tomorrow and will keep you posted on how it goes (granted yes really 4.5 mo). I def plan to ask about sleep!
@daniellemybelle: we had a middle and window seat so I could nurse A as much as possible without everyone seeing me (even though one passenger def tried to sneak a peak). If you can, try to feed during takeoff and landing to prevent ear issues. I also suggest lots of diapers as the air pressure (or who knows what) seemed to relax A's bowels and he had huge poops on both flights. We were really fortunate to have incredibly understanding and helpful seat ates and changed A in our seats. If you have any additional questions feel free to message me. I was super nervous and it was far easier than I thought it would be.
@kjpugs: how was your Jersey visit?
@avivoca: how's H feeling? Hope you were able to get a bit of a break?
watermelon / 14467 posts
@Sadieloo: Hey! H is feeling much better. Her fever broke this morning, but she's been running a very low-grade fever since the afternoon and been fussy. It could be related teething. Idk. I need to talk to daycare tomorrow and find out what exactly constitutes a fever. Am I going to have to keep her home for every low-grade fever she runs due to teething? If so, that is excessive in my eyes.
H may be feeling better, but Mom and Dad are not. No fever, but my throat is very sore and T has a bad headache and cough. I hope I can go to work tomorrow instead of burning through another sick day. I get ten a year, but I would like to save some for when my husband is gone and I will be responsible for all sick days. Due to a glitch, he has negative sick time right and won't accrue any until next pay period.

@kjpugs: Thanks for all the tips! I have two bottle holders for my diaper bag that keep formula pretty cold so I am comfortable taking them out pre-mixed for a few hours. I've never had to bring a bottle for longer than 3 hours or so though.
Those formula dispensers look awesome but it's unlikely I can get anything like that before we leave tomorrow I have some little plastic containers that are for baby food that I might use. Or I may just have to put the dry formula in the bottles & deal with clumps
As far as at the ILs, we don't have a bottle warmer at home - we usually just use a cup of hot water - so I I imagine that's what we'll do there. I think I am just going to pack the formula pitcher since it's what we're used to. I don't want to ask to use her dishes, and we'll be on the go a lot anyway. I am definitely going to bring pack my bottles though! We have 8.
@Sadieloo: I am so hoping we can avoid poops on the plane! We combo feed so my strategy is to give her a bottle before the flight, nurse basically all flight if she's willing, and then feed her a bottle after we land. We'll see if she cooperates! I can't decide if a window seat would be better for privacy or an aisle so I'm not claustrophobic.

@daniellemybelle: sounds like you are set! I forgot that you BF too- I was thinking how if LO nursed it would make the plane a LOT easier. If she can nurse calmly I bet window seat would be great. Honestly even if everything had gone how it did for us, having DH there would have made it doable, so I hope that having your DH there helps!! Also hoping for a not-full flight for you!!!!

You guys, Effie has had the TOUGHEST 24 hours She does this bend-over-then-push-off launching herself thing when we are practicing sitting, and last night she did that while we were practicing sitting on the floor and FACE PLANTED and cried for what felt like hours (it was probably 5 minutes.) I called the ped and they had me check her eyes, etc, and I checked on her all night. She's fine... I just hated haering her cry.
And then today she was screaming bloody murder... we go to change her and she has a firm poo stuck We had to help get it out and she was bleeding a little. Called the ped again and they had us give her some apple juice (4 oz over the course of a day, diluted with water 1:1) to help loosen things up. She just pooped again before we could give her the apple juice and she was SCREAMING again and bleeding a little again too. Absolutely breaks my heart. Anyone have any poo issues like this? It's probably because of the new formula they have us trying for her (the spit up kind)... ugh... I hope the next BM isn't painful for her
watermelon / 14467 posts
@kjpugs: No poo issues, but Hyla has been coughing so much that she farts and she starts crying when that happens. Sick babies are no fun. I hope Effie has a better poo soon.
One of Hyla's eyes was glued shut this morning with eye boogies. T had to pry it open. I'm home sick AGAIN because I woke up with massive body aches and a low grade fever. We found out what the limit on fever is at daycare, but also found out that if she goes tomorrow, we have to pay an entire week's tuition since it was just for illness. Ugh.

Hi hi! It's been awhile, but the survey is a great way to catch up!
Weight: She just had her 4 month appointment and weighed in at 15 lbs 7 oz.
Height: 25 inches long!
Sleep: She has been in her own room for the last 6+ weeks and has been sleeping well. She was sleeping through the night and then regressed to waking up 2 times a night when she got her first cold. She is back to sleeping from 7-7:30 to 5-6:30. She is not the greatest at napping but is starting to get the hang of it.
Eating: Still breastfeeding - she nurses first thing in the morning, takes 3 4 oz bottles at daycare and typically nurses 1-2 times before bed. I am lucky enough to work for an employer who is very supportive and in fact promotes breastfeeding. I have access to private lactation rooms that have Medela Symphony pumps. I just have to bring my own tubing and parts. I pump 2 times a day and able to pump enough for 1.5 days of daycare on average.
Likes: Loves people right now - faces, mirror, pictures of people, etc. She loves to jump - so jumperoo or jumping in our laps and tummy time. Car rides and bath time are also some favorites. She also enjoys her Oball and Sophie. When she is tired, she likes to feel her minky dot sleepsack or soft blankie.
Dislikes: She used to not mind saline and the nose frida, but now she hates it.
Latest milestone: Rolling back to front (started doing this 3 weeks ago) as well as grabbing for objects with both hands instead of just one or the other.
Biggest challenge: Napping for longer periods on a consistent basis!
Most fun thing about your LO: I love watching her take in everything around her and be "interested" in those around her. She acts as if she truly is listening!
Describe your LO's Personality if it's starting to show?: She is a very mellow and content baby. She is starting to show some independence in the fact that when reading, she seemingly wants to hold the book herself. Or if we help her feel different textures in a book, she'll wrangle her hand away and then swat at the book herself.
Mamas:
Back at work? Still on Mat leave? I am happily back at work. I, however, am only working 30 hours a week (which really adds up to 36) instead of 40-50 hours a week.
Any post-partum issues? Intercourse is not as appealing to me because I experience some discomfort afterward.
How are YOU doing? Overall, I am doing well. I am pleasantly surprised with parenthood - I'm going to attribute it to my exceedingly low expectations though. Plus, my LO has made it very easy for my husband and I so far by eating and sleeping well as well as just being a chill baby.
kiwi / 726 posts
@avivoca: Poor H and poor YOU! I hope you both feel better soon.
@daniellemybelle: not sure you've left yet, but if not, I suggest going for the window. So much more privacy and we at least were very fortunate to have very understanding and supportive row mates that were happy to get up whenever we needed to (which only turned out to be when I went to the bathroom).
@kjpugs: poor Effie! I hope things get straightened out soon. How was your top to Jers?
@mrs. mochi: send some of that sleep pattern over my way. Any tips? Glad to hear your LO us such a chill babe.
We had our 4 mo appt today and A was 27.25 in and 16 lb 6 oz (he's really 4.5 mo). Still a long and lean dude who doesn't want to sleep longer than 3 hours. Sigh!

I'm not sure I will be going home in April too. I'm giving it a little time to see if the PTSD fades or not but we also may not be able to afford it. Hoping to instead have a longer trip out in September, when DH can come with. So hopefully we can schedule a time to meet up then! Besides the weather and travel though it was awesome to have Effie meet family. Definitely miss NJ but not the weather this time of year!

Coming from a FL mama... I was talking to my twinner in OK and she was saying how they never see their daughter's legs... and I realized how crappy it must be to be in the cold so long! Really most of you have gone from chilly to COLD since having our LO's!
Well I'm here to tell you... babies + warm weather = AWESOME! Can't wait for you all to enjoy it. It is so beautiful here now and I can't wait for you all to get out and frolic in the sun with your babes. And when you're all enjoying it... I will at that point be melting in our 99 degrees and 99% humidity for 5 months straight. Womp!

I'm pretty sure I have Mastitis. I called the doctor, and they said I should hear from them before 1:00. I'm just not getting any better and Tylenol cannot touch this fever. My husband took H to daycare today anfter just trying to feed her gave me the shakes and the feeling that I was going to vomit.
I would not wish this on anyone.
