October 2014 Mothers-To-Be!

    Hey girls, just checking in!

I'm 17 weeks now... I had my 16 week appointment last week where blood was drawn for the quad-screen. The NT scan was not offered to me as I am only in my late 20s. Next week Wednesday (4/30), we have a 3D ultrasound scheduled with radiology. I think they like to call that one the anatomy scan; this is probably when people find out the gender as well, but we're opting not to find out.

Is anyone else having parent-issues right now? My parents live on the mainland and were considering moving here after the birth of the baby, but I really don't want them to. I like loving them from afar. Then they were going to try coming here for 3-6 months to help out once the baby is here, but I hate that idea, too. I don't disagree that I'll need help, but I really just don't want to spend that much time with them.

Today I came up with a happy medium: Mom ONLY will come for two weeks around my due date for the birth of the baby and to help out right after... then when I go back to work mid-January, they'll come up for their 3-6 month stint and we'll have reliable child-care via them, without me feeling smothered. This way they'll get to spend as much time as they ever wanted with baby, and I'll still be able to breathe.

    Maybe I'm just a brat.

@mrskoloa: happy 17 weeks, have you felt anything yet? I've had two days where I thought it might be baby moving, but so brief I'm still not sure!
Both sets of parents of ours live about 7 miles away from us, I'm grateful as this means babysitters galore but they go home each night, I totally understand. I wouldn't want to feel overcrowded when I'm trying to learn how to parent. I don't think ill take constant criticism very well, in worried mil is going to try and teach me everything!
You are going back to work mid jan? Full time? Wow your like supermom, I've booked 8 months off but think I might cut it to 5/6 as we will struggle without my income I think (or at least big have all the nice things and treats!

@mrskoloa: Sounds like a reasonable plan to me! I wouldn't be able to have anyone living with us for 3-6 months without feeling a bit crazy. We had my MIL living with us when she was going through treatment for cancer a few years back and it was very difficult. Congrats on being 17 weeks!!

Our families live about 1.5 hours away and weren't much help at all with DS, but that was partially because we never asked for help. This time, my mom is going to come and help us with DS while I am in the hospital and then hopefully on/off after the new baby is here. I would actually prefer to keep our current nanny for 15 hrs/week instead, as I feel it would be easier for me to ask her to do things to help out.

@Mrs tartan: I don't have a choice! America is so behind when it comes to family benefits. In fact, teachers in Hawaii don't even get maternity leave. We have to save our sick leave days... and no matter how many we have, we're only able to take 10 weeks off, and then up to 20 days off unpaid before we HAVE to go back to work (or "quit" for the rest of the year). Constant criticism is my fear; my dad just doesn't give "advice" very well.

@bushelandapeck: I totally agree. It's hard to ask your parents to do things for you, and to do them a certain way, because they've already raised kids, and look how good they turned out! My mom lives under the belief that formula contains more nutrients than breastmilk.

I am officially joining you all in the maternity pants! I was ok with tight-ish pants until the end of last week, when all of the sudden I couldn't button anything I own, ugh. So, at 14w5d, I went out and got 5 pairs of maternity pants, and am wearing the first ones today - holy comfort!!! I totally get what all the fuss is about and agree that we could make major $$ selling these as "comfort pants" -- I'm NEVER giving mine up!

@mrskoloa: I can't imagine ANYONE moving in with us for 3-6 months. While it sounds like they are trying to be helpful, that sounds like a nightmare to me! You definitely need to have your space to learn how to be parents without your own parents under the same roof. You plan sounds much more manageable. How big is your house? Will everyone have their own space? I think that is crucial to this being successful for everyone involved. You are NOT being a brat at all.

@Mrs tartan: I'm 15 weeks, and I've questioned "movement" a couple times over the last few days. It felt different from the typical belly gurgles, but I'm still not convinced it's baby and not gas, yet...lol. 8 months off sounds like a dream come true! How much of that will be paid?

@mrskoloa: I'm a teacher, too....our maternity "leave" is very similar to yours. No actual maternity leave, just the use of our saved up sick days. We get 6 weeks (30 days) paid for a vaginal birth and 8 weeks (40 days) paid for a csection birth. Anything after that is unpaid. We are allowed to take up to two years off without losing our job, though. If we take one full year, we are guaranteed our exact job back. If we take two full years, we are guaranteed a job in the district, just not necessarily the same school or grade you previously taught at. What I've recently learned (several months too late) is that I could have bought short term disability insurance, and that would've paid much more. If you are planning to have more children, it may be worth looking into. Unfortunately for me, this is baby#3 (and our last), so I totally missed the boat on the short term disability stuff. In order for it to be applied for maternity benefits, I would have had to been enrolled for a full 10 months before the pregnancy. Siiiigh. Hindsight's a bitch, right?

@Rocker2014: I've dug into my "bigger" clothes...not my maternity stuff yet. That's all up in the attic, so I need to ask my husband to find it! Lol.

@Rocker2014: yay for maternity pants! I haven't busted mine out yet but I'm eyeing them for sure I am having a harder time with my work pants than my jeans, I guess because of the lack of elastic. Thank goodness wa weather and dresses are coming!

So I'm experiencing what I think must be a new (for me) pregnancy symptom. Itchiness! My whole body, especially my legs, have been itching like crazy. I've been moisturizing much more than usual the past couple days, so I know it's not dry skin. I had new sheets on my bed last night and was convinced they mustve been the cause, so I put my old set on but still I'm itching like crazy. Anyone else dealing with this and/or have any suggestions? I'm going nuts over here!

@bunnylovesbear: Oh gosh the itchiness! When I go to bed I get all sorts of itches, especially my legs. If it gets bad I put some hydrocortisone on them and it seems to help.

@cyndistar3: thanks - I think we have some of that lying around somewhere. Going to find it now!!

@bunnylovesbear: Oh no! I have super itchy skin normally, and I've found that colloidal oatmeal baths really help. The water shouldn't be too hot, since that's drying... but a product like this helps me immensely:
    http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/walgreens-oatmeal-bath-powder%2c-8-pack/ID=prod6114941-product
Most drug stores seem to have a generic brand, Aveeno makes one as well!

I think the itchiness is a hormonal reaction that some people get! I hope you feel better soon!

So far I have lost 15 lbs... I am not sure if it's too much but I guess since its impossible for me to starve myself it couldn't be too bad especially since I'm way over weight to begin with. I am super excited for my ultrasound tomorrow, I hate that it isn't until 4 as I am super impatient but oh well!

  13. bushelandapeck

    pomelo / 5720 posts

@bunnylovesbear: I haven't had this experience but I do know others who have. I hope you find something that helps!!

@cyndistar3: So excited for your scan tomorrow!! I can't believe I have to wait another 2 weeks to find out. Haha.

  14. bunnylovesbear

    kiwi / 600 posts

@cyndistar3: well, I couldn't find the cream anywhere in the house, so I'm going to have to make a trip to the pharmacy to get that AND the oatmeal bath. Thanks for the suggestion, @Ms.Pumpkin.

It's so weird...it's fine during the day, but itches like crazy at night. Not sure if I should call my doc or not... of course I consulted Dr. Google, and there is a possibility that it's a liver issue? I'm hoping for some relief tonight - my next office visit is May 5th, but that's about two weeks away! If it continues the next couple nights, I'll probably make the call.

So I was looking through some old photos from my last pregnancy. I was so good at taking weekly pics to track my belly growth, and I think I've only taken one so far this time around! I need to make a stronger effort to take pics each week - it's so fun to look back at them!!

@bunnylovesbear: I had thought severe itchiness was a liver problem too, although I guess if its not constant I would put it down to hormones. Either way I would make call before the weekend, just to be sure.
@cyndistar3: eeek good luck tomorrow. How many weeks will you be? Are you finding out the gender?

  16. cyndistar3

    pomegranate / 3980 posts

@bushelandapeck: Sadly it's just a random ultrasound, we probably won't be able to tell gender and my next one won't be until probably the second week of June

@cyndistar3: ah well if nothing else you get to see your baby again. Always exciting! I'd have a portable scan machine at home if I could! I hate that I only get two scans in the entire pregnancy. Those half hours are not enough in 40 weeks.

  20. bushelandapeck

    pomelo / 5720 posts

@bunnylovesbear: I've been pretty bad about pics this time too. I've managed on every 2 weeks or so but nothing consistent. I also used a pregnancy journal with DS and haven't used one this time around either. I was too paranoid after starting one last time and having it end in miscarriage...

@Mrs tartan: We only get two scans as well, unless there is an issue. I think I had 5-6 with DS because he was breach and I've already had 2 so far with this one. I plan to do a 3D ultrasound somewhere around 32 weeks if I don't have another one after the anatomy scan. I can't wait 22 weeks before seeing this LO again!

  21. cyndistar3

    pomegranate / 3980 posts

@Mrs tartan: Yea I am definitely excited to see baby either way with my midwife they only give you one but I was lucky enough to get my insurance to pay for an early one somewhere else and this one I'm getting tomorrow is actually at a pregnancy care center that is doing free ultrasounds for people under 20 weeks to train their new nurse.

@MrsMccarthy: yes! She did it by looking at her lady lines and also the nub theory or "angle of the dangle" she said two confirmation methods yay!

@Mrs.Panda: Woo hoo! I'm not surprised- at our 12w ultrasound, even if we hadn't found out via the DNA test, the tech said she would have guessed correctly based on the angle of the nub, so it seems like it's definitely possible, and fairly reliable!

@bunnylovesbear: I hope the treatments help out!

@cyndistar3: Good luck on the u/s! Always amazing to get to see the little wiggly pipsqueaks on that screen!

I'm just checking in briefly before a crazy wedding weekend... we're just both glad that after a year of planning, this thing is finally going to be done!

Hilarious stories are already coming out of this though. Mr. P and I picked his family up at the airport last night. I took his parents and brother back in my car while he and his sister picked up the rental. His sister insisted that we were NOT to take one suitcase in my car, they'd take it in the rental. I discovered why when they arrived at the house with the suitcase. It was SO SMELLY, it was unbelievable.

Turns out, Mr.P's Mom worries about his ability to get certain Vietnamese foods here on the East Coast. So she packs them in a suitcase when they visit. I believe that this was a package of dried fish, or something similar. Whew! Mr.P had the embarrassing experience of taking the rental car shuttle to get the car with his sister, and having everyone around them frowning and sniffing the air, wondering where the smell was coming from! They drove the 40 minutes back to the house with the windows cranked down.

@Mrs.Panda: congrats!! It seems so early to find out the sex! The power of medicine, right?! Lol.

@Ms.Pumpkin: last night wasn't quite as bad with the itchiness. However, I was a bit distracted with a sleepless toddler. My son has a little cold, and he woke up crying around 11pm (about 40 mins after I climbed into bed) so we snuggled in bed watching Barney ondemand until he got sleepy again. I did take a nice, long oatmeal bath earlier today, so hopefully tonight continues to be less itchy!

@cyndistar3: poor DH, I forget other people get gender disappointment too apart from the mother. My best friend is the 3rd girl and they are each less than a year apart, their house is so much fun! I wouldn't be surprised if your DH is thinking about baby 4 for a boy already. Haha.

He said he would be a bit disappointed but it's not like he would be actually upset. He said he wants to adopt a boy because he doesn't want to play that game lol... I would definitely like to adopt someday
