@loki: So do I! I wouldn't purchase anything until we knew the sex so I have lots of catching up to do!
pear / 1787 posts
@marionberry: same! ahh! at least you already have boy stuff, that'll make it helpful.
i registered this weekend. if anyone wants to check out my registry/critique it and tell me what to add/remove/change, feel free. it's on babiesrus.ca and my last name is okihiro. fyi: there is a carseat AND a stroller travel system in there because i need to find out if the carseat is compatible with my friend's stroller... the lady at babies r us thinks it won't be so i put both on my registry so my MIL can buy whichever one we go with for us
also... second time moms... do people register for diapers??? lucie's list says to but i feel like that's something people get anyways. and i'll need to try a bunch of brands anyways... thoughts?
persimmon / 1386 posts
@loki: I did not register for diapers (or a bunch of toiletry things). I didn't know what would work best and counted on moms giving me stuff they liked. I had an amazon registry and you are able to put a note on top so I wrote something about not registering for diapers and the like. Let me see if I can find it.
ETA: Here is what I put at the top of our registry:
Family and Friends,
We are very excited to be welcoming our baby girl into our family this fall! As a first time parents, we did not add a lot of the "staples" (diapers, bottles, soap, diaper cream) because we have no idea what baby Reagan will like nor do we have the experience of some of you parents. If there is something that you think we need that we have not registered for, please feel free to go "off registry"...let's be honest, we have no idea what we are in for! Also, if you would prefer to shop in a store, Amazon has a nifty "buying this gift elsewhere" button that allows you to check off the item without purchasing through Amazon.
Thank you for all your love and support!

@NeekieRose: good idea! i think i can add a note to my registry at BRU too! thanks

@As Time Goes By: yay for another boy!!
@loki: @marionberry: I'm with you on so much to do - I think putting together a registry will help me feel a bit more organized and on top of things. From there, I want to start thinking more about the nursery and looking at furniture. So, so exciting!

Second time moms...(@Marionberry, @Mrs. Sunshine, @Rockies11, @anonysquire..I think that's all of us?), are you guys doing another registry? Has anyone said anything about throwing you a shower or sprinkle?
No one has said anything to me, and I would feel kinda guilty since these babies are so close and the same gender. There aren't a lot of things we are going to need...

@loki: @NeekieRose: @marionberry: @SunshineMcC: I know! I feel like we have lots to do too! I got the crib, mattress and dresser, but the room is in a complete reno state so nothing can be done or organised or put away until we finish plastering the ceiling and rebuilding the closet! until then everything is sitting in flat pack boxes in my living room!

@NeekieRose: Second time mom and as far as I know, no shower or sprinkle. I honestly don't really want one since I have the basics already and even if it ends up being an opposite sex kind of deal (first is girl, we don't find out about this one until next Tuesday) I am sure my family will gift me clothes or I will get hand me downs from friends with boys.

@meredithNYC: Sorry! Went off the #2s in the list! I feel like DH would probably veto a shower, ha. We just had DD's first birthday and got so much stuff. He is already talking about telling people not to get her anything for Christmas.
I may put together a small registry for anything I think of that we could need in case anyone asks...

@NeekieRose: No worries! And yes, I already feel like we have so much STUFF, you know? I know it's part of having kids, but man do I hate the clutter.

@NeekieRose: no one has said anything to me...we need a few big ticket items so we are basically fending for ourselves. I'm thinking of having a sip and see when she gets here cause I like parties. I kinda want a diaper party but my best friend was pregnant & about 6 weeks behind me & had a miscarriage so I think I'll skip out since it's not needed.
persimmon / 1386 posts
@Mrs. Sunshine: A Sip 'n See! Totally doing that, because I always need a reason to throw a party. Sorry to hear about your best friend
What big ticket items do you need? Other than maybe a double stroller, I'm not sure what other gear I will need. But I may be blanking on some obvious stuff...
pomelo / 5041 posts
@NeekieRose: a friend and my mom have both mentioned showers. They'll likely be a bit smaller than before but with twins coming my mom thinks people understand the need for way more gear. We're reusing our swing and car seats but almost everything else is still being used, doesn't function for twins, or needs an additional item. We're going to try to buy most things ourselves though. I told family they could get me baby things for Christmas if they wanted though.
hostess / cantaloupe / 6486 posts
@NeekieRose: I don't want to push Jessie into a big kid bed before she's ready so we'll need a crib (though not right away), our baby monitor is just audio &was a hand me down from someone who also got it as a hand me down so it's on its last leg & I'd love to get a video monitor in its place. We also need a stroller but we can sell our current one to help cover that.
We will also be purchasing a storage building so that we have somewhere to put all of the things that are currently in DD2s room. But DH'S boss has said on 3 separate occasions that everyone will be getting an end of the year bonus in April nearly half their yearly salary so hopefully that pans out & we won't have to worry about it!
persimmon / 1386 posts
@Mrs. Sunshine: Wow...nice bonus! I miss bonuses (I work at a nonprofit). Oh the video monitor is so worth it! We have the Samsung one with 2 cameras. So theoretically, we can put a camera in each room, but I really like having 2 views, so I was just toying with the idea of getting 2 more cameras. And we have decided to transition Reagan to a bed. She already sleeps on a cot at daycare so I am hoping it won't be an issue.
@marionberry: umm...yeah, you def deserve another shower!
pear / 1787 posts
@marionberry: i just read on twitter that kourtney kardashian is having a shower for her third so you definitely need a shower!!!! i'm glad people realize that and are going to throw you one
@NeekieRose: the monitor was the thing that stressed me out most when registering. i don't know how i feel about the one i ended up choosing and i'm so nervous about it!
persimmon / 1386 posts
@loki: stressed out between video or no video? Or between video monitors?
pear / 1787 posts
@NeekieRose: well i originally just wanted to go no video and keep it inexpensive/simple. but i spoke with a mom friend and she said she swears by video... so i decided to take her recommendation. but all the video ones are soooo pricey.
i went with this one: http://www.toysrus.ca/product/index.jsp?productId=24777266&fromRegistryNumber=61202635&product_skn=78420&prodFindSrc=registry
but obviously i'm open to other suggestions!
persimmon / 1386 posts
@loki: I am another mom that will tell you the video monitor is sooooooooooo worth it. We used a gift card from DH's work and a 20% off coupon to get ours. I swear by it. I don't know anything about that one; I'd try to find more reviews. I think I said ours was a samsung, it's the motorola. This one: http://www.toysrus.ca/product/index.jsp?productId=28770596 (but with 2 cameras...which isn't a need, but when we went to get it they didn't have any in stock with one camera so we just bought the 2 camera one). It has been great for us. My friend had the same one and her monitor broke and motorola sent them a new one, no questions asked. Great customer service.
pear / 1787 posts
@NeekieRose: i was considering the motorola ones! i was in the store and trying to read reviews while i was there... the only reason i didn't go with the motorola one you have is because of the price. maybe i'll take a monitor off there and we'll just buy our own. i just feel so guilty putting expensive items on a registry!
persimmon / 1386 posts
@loki: I don't think you should feel guilty for putting expensive items on there! What is the worst that happens, no one buys it and you can use the completion discount? Best, someone does buy it for you! You never know, people may pool money to get you a big gift. As long as you have stuff at all price points, I don't think you need to worry.
hostess / cantaloupe / 6486 posts
@loki: we are obviously doing fine without a video monitor but Jess was in our room until nearly 8 months old & I wish we had a video monitor for sure. I bet we wouldn't have kept her in the same room as long if we had had one. I say get one!

The colors are filling in! I'll keep updating over the next couple weeks since there are a lot of anatomy scans coming up (including ours, eeeeeee).

Second-time moms, did any of you use a SIDS-prevention movement detection monitor like Angelcare or Snuza in addition to or instead of a video monitor? Any thoughts?
apricot / 306 posts
@loki: I registered for some cloth diapers but probably wouldn't register disposables. However, loads of companies give free trials of diapers, you just sign up online and they ship to you, so that might be a way to try out a few different brands? I'm planning on doing that (for back ups to the cloth) and I also went to a baby expo/fair on the weekend and got PILES of free diapers and wipes... among other things.
@PawPrints: I was planning on only getting a SIDS-prevention movement detection monitor and not a video monitor as for me, that seemed more essential (I live in just a small townhouse) I registered for the Levana Oma http://www.amazon.com/Levana-Clip-On-Portable-Movement-Vibration/dp/B00E8NGRN4/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1415830674&sr=1-1&keywords=levana+oma
... but now after reading how much everyone loves their video monitors I'm re-considering not getting a video monitor!
Interested to hear what others think about movement monitors...

@loki: @NeekieRose: We have a motorola video monitor and swear by it too! It was expensive but so worth it (and it was on my registry - my grandma bought it). We only got one camera and that was just fine but we'll need 2 for the twins.
@PawPrints: I was a big worry wart at first when J was born and I was tempted to buy one of those, but looking back I really don't think you need one unless your baby has a health problem that might give you reason to think he/she'd stop breathing. Just my opinion...
pomelo / 5041 posts
Oh as far as diapers, maybe ask around to friends of yours that already have kids and see if they have left overs you can try? I have extra diapers in almost every size because J would grow out of one before the box was out. I know that at my shower, my SIL gave me some extra diapers she had (a few dif brands). I get really cheap diapers from work (I work for a health system) so I didn't really end up using anything but Huggies/Pampers for a long time but as a second time mom I'd totally want to try cheaper brands.
pomegranate / 3314 posts
@PawPrints: we actually used the Angelcare as our primary monitor - no video monitor. That said, our living space is tiny so I never thought it necessary.
hostess / cantaloupe / 6486 posts
@PawPrints: we never did but the people I used to nanny for had one & said the alarms would go off when nothing was wrong & would always wake their baby...but that was probably user error lol they had an angelcare

Hey ladies. I've been super sick the last few weeks with a cold so have not been around much. Unfortunately I also got some bad news today that I screened positive on the IPS. We were given a 1/17 chance of T18. I am super stressed but trying to remain positive. We have to go for a special ultrasound tomorrow and see a genetic counsellor. This just sucks. Send positive vibes my way please.
Hope you ladies are feeling well.

@delight: that's so stressful! Fingers crossed everything is ok. Hopefully you're in the 94% where the baby is fine. Good luck tomorrow and let us know how it goes.
pomelo / 5041 posts
@delight: i'm so sorry. I know that has to be stressful. I agree with @banana330 in thinking that there's a 94% chance baby is perfectly healthy. You're in my prayers. If it makes you feel any better my friend had two soft markers for t18 and even then baby was fine.
persimmon / 1386 posts
@delight: sorry to hear you got bad news, but like others have said, really hoping your baby is in the 94%! So sorry you have to deal with this and I'm sending lots of positive thoughts your way!

@delight: so sorry you're dealing with that stress. i'll be thinking about you and sending love your way. i echo everyone else in saying that the odds are in your favour and i hope you get some great news today
