@loki: I've heard many stories of people passing the three hour test. Just enjoy your vacation and deal with the test when you get back. You deserve some stress free fun!
hostess / cantaloupe / 6486 posts
@Astro Bee: my first LO did that! She started pushing on the probe and the just disappeared! I was already like 32 weeks but she somehow found a spot and we couldn't find her heartbeat for like 2 minutes, she did not enjoy being poked at lol
apricot / 306 posts
@loki: I was just about to say the same as @marionberry! In fact it was my OB who told me that lots of people fail the first and pass the second.. so don't stress too much! Also, some people just process glucose a bit differently and so the 1 hour test doesn't really work for them.
pear / 1787 posts
@marionberry: @lulu22: thanks ladies. i hope that's the case for me. i honestly had a feeling i was going to get it this entire pregnancy cuz i feel like it's just my luck. so i will be very relieved if i don't have it but i also need to mentally prepare myself in case i do. that was the biggest run on sentence ever haha. sorry about that, i'm not fixing it.

Howdy all. Feeling very pregnant today -- in a bad way. We failed to plan ahead for our snow and parked at the very far end of the driveway. I got less than half the shoveling and clearing done before I started feeling really gross and crampy and had to give up and take the day off. Starting to feel pretty frustrated about the stuff I'm not physically up to anymore.
hostess / cantaloupe / 6486 posts
@lilyofthewest: me too!! I've been at least doing yoga 5 times a week plus eating really well still and I feel like my body is still falling apart. It makes me feel really frustrated and even like a failure as a mother and wife sometimes. This pregnancy is way more physically exhausting for me!
pear / 1580 posts
@lilyofthewest: I hear you. It's so frustrating how I can't get my body to do whatever I want anymore. I wanted to be the awesomest pregnant lady in history and still do everything I did pre-pregnancy - rigorous exercise, carrying all the groceries myself, cleaning like a madwoman - but it is NOT happening. Can't wait to get back to it after LO arrives!

Sorry if I missed this somewhere, but did our nursery thread disappear? I looked in my post history to try to find it quickly and I don't see it. Maybe my brain is too tired and it's really there lol.

just got back from my first OB appointment. she is all business but i like her. my belly is measuring ahead which isn't a good GD sign and she is INSISTING i do the test before i leave. my boss is letting me work from home again on thursday soooooo i have to go for the second test then. i'll get the results when i'm back, i guess. she said it would help her get the paperwork in order.
i'm with you guys on feeling rough. i get winded putting my boots on, it's embarrassing!!!
apricot / 306 posts
@loki: glad you liked the ob! pain about the test but at least you can get it over and done with and dont have to think about doing it while you are on vacation.
and YES some days it's sooooo hard to put on shoes and socks! but other days are not so bad.... weird....
you guys, I'm so dumb I went shopping this morning and purchased a NON maternity dress in my pre-pregnancy size. I don't know what I was thinking but it was gorgeous and on-sale and I've been feeling so down about the state of my maternity wardrobe and just wanted to buy something NICE and non-maternity. I bet I will never get back to my pre-pregnancy weight and will never fit into it. Retail therapy at it's worst.
pear / 1787 posts
@lulu22: it can be your goal dress. haha jk, i have like.. hundreds of "goal" items in my closet that have been there, untouched, for like... 5 years. it's not stretchy is it? have you tried it on? i was shocked but a TON of my prepregnancy stuff fits me and i'm bringing mostly non maternity stuff to costa rica! unless it's a style that totally doesn't work with a bump, you might be able to pull it off??? trying to be optimistic haha.
apricot / 306 posts
@loki: haha I think it WILL have to be a goal dress. I tried it on and it's not stretchy and won't zip over my belly, but it does fit elsewhere. oh well. that's SO GOOD That you still fit into prepregnancy clothes. NOTHING prepregnancy fits me any more and even some of the maternity clothes that I purchased early on (like earlier in the 2nd trimester) don't even fit me anymore... you know it's bad when maternity tops wont even cover your belly anymore.... I feel like I'm constantly scraping to find something to wear each day. I should just buy more maternity stuff in bigger sizes but I'm just being stubborn because there is only 3 months to...
pear / 1787 posts
@lulu22: honestly, i probably buy most of my clothes too big to begin with and mostly everything i own is oversized/sits away from the body... so it has worked out with pregnancy... and i have like every size in my closet because i fluctuate in weight so much. but ya i know what u mean, i kinda feel like i need more jeans but i'm like MAN we're almost done!!!

@Astro Bee: I've never realized just how important sleep is! I got some good sleep last night which helped a lot today! Hoping your week gets better!
@loki: why is measuring early/bigger a bad sign for GD? I ask as I was measuring a week early at my 20 week ultrasound, but the doc said it was fine. At least you'll get the test out if the way before you leave!!
@lulu22: I'm wearing the same stuff day after day too! You'll get back to your weight after baby, don't worry!!!
More BH contractions over here today - crazy!! I started working on my maternity leave plan (training documents, details of my role, etc.) and it made it really real that I'm going to be off in 3 months!!! But it's also hurling me feel more organized too! I had a great talk with my therapist last night about looking at the next 3 months as transition to baby, and carving out me time, as well as doing some research snd reading up on breastfeeding and sleeping for newborns. I think its going to help me feel more prepared and relaxed, so am feeling good about it!
Any second time moms have a favorite sleep training method or book you recommend?
pomelo / 5041 posts
@SunshineMcC: The Happiest Baby on the Block and/or the The Happiest Baby's Guide to Great Sleep are both pretty good. I've heard similar things about Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child. As far as breastfeeding, I have Ina May Garten's Guide to Breastfeeding which I really liked (she's a midwife so it's a bit far out at times, but useful). In addition, you might think about some sort of pediatric book. I have the Mayo Clinic's Guide to the First Year but honestly I feel like I rarely used it. My pediatrician gave us a book by about month 5 that told us when to call the doctor (for a number of different things) and that seemed almost more useful. I can get the title tomorrow when ds is awake. Otherwise, any books you get I would suggest you read prior to baby. You won't have a lot of time to read them afterward, except to focus on one quick topic.

@marionberry: thank you SO much! This is all so incredibly helpful! You're such a great resource. I will check them out and would also love the title of the other one you mentioned. Thanks again! I know there are so many things I can't and won't be able to control or expect, so being proactive is helping me feel more calm!

@loki: I'm sorry about the results but hopefully the 3 hour comes back negative. Enjoy your trip!
@lulu22: I was shopping with DH and browsing clothes... It took me a while to realize that I couldn't actually fit into anything I wanted to try on
@SunshineMcC: I think the measuring further ahead is sign of GD because typically GD babies are bigger. I
think it's great you put together a plan for the next few months. I have just started looking into prenatal classes and I feel so far behind.
I had an appointment today and things are looking good for the most part. I think I have not had a single BH contraction based on the midwives description, but I think I have had a few of the real thing. Thankfully they have been mild, short and well spread out so not a concern. Baby boy is happily snuggled into a breach position at the moment so I will also be looking into trying to move him around a bit
So after typing out the last bit,
@SunshineMcC: I have decided the anxiety is creeping in and I am definitely making a plan for the next three months!

I have a link to a book called Sleep Solutions. Let me know if anyone is interested and I can share it.

@As Time Goes By: I just bought a fun calendar and am putting big fun events on it, like showers (we're having three!!!) and all our classes. I'm going to try to actually schedule in both fun things (massage, coffee shop with a book, crafting) as well as time to read up and research. I'll let you know how it goes and would love to hear the same. I'm pretty visual so I think the calendar will help me! Glad to hear your appointment went well. Baby boy has plenty of time to get in the right position! Sleep tight!
pear / 1787 posts
@SunshineMcC: I think your belly is supposed to be roughly the same in cm as you are in weeks. Bigger than that can mean a big baby, which can be a sign of GD. but my friend just had a 10lb12oz baby... They made her do the 3 hour test twice to explain baby's size but she didn't have it! So it could mean nothing too!
You guys are so on top of reading and prenatal classes... I feel like such a slacker. After my trip I need to get into baby prep mode. Reading here has also made me stressed about leaving work so soon... So much to do!
hostess / cantaloupe / 6486 posts
@loki: the only book I read was What to Expect when You're Expecting and I didn't take a single class and we all lived! lol you're not a slacker!
pear / 1580 posts
@loki: Speaking of getting into baby prep mode, I'm good on the education side, but I am a TOTAL slacker regarding the nursery and gear! I have absolutely NO gear, no registry, and our nursery is literally under construction right now and probably won't be done til March! =\ Super anxious about it!

I had my glucose tolerance test yesterday and I passed! I was really dreading the orange drink, but it wasn't bad at all. The hard part, though, was sleeping last night. I'm guessing it was the sugar, but the baby was crazy active when I was going to bed - so much so that it really tickled and I kept waking up DH by my laughing.
persimmon / 1386 posts
@loki: same as @Mrs. Sunshine, I only read What to Expect When You're Expecting. And lots of HelloBee. I have found reading real world experiences to be pretty helpful.
persimmon / 1386 posts
I think I may actually be having some BH. I never noticed them last time. But what I have been thinking was just the baby pushing down on the bottom of my uterus, might actually be BH. As I was walking into work today I felt what I thought was just the baby moving, but then I felt around and my entire stomach was firm. So, maybe?
pear / 1787 posts
@Mrs. Sunshine: @NeekieRose: that makes me feel better. i started reading what to expect and just didn't find it all that informative. i felt like i already knew most of the info! my MIL got me what to expect: the first year for christmas and i imagine that will be better. i just really wanna do a breastfeeding class but will have to look into them once i get back.
@ineebee: congrats on passing! and don't worry about all the prep, it'll all come together. people always say the final months of pregnancy draaaaaaag so maybe time will slow down for us and give you a chance to get everything in order.
apricot / 346 posts
@loki: the only reason I have done anything is because I had the last two weeks off! Now that I'm back to work it's hard to find the energy. DH is the one that really wants to do a prenatal class so I'm just trying to make sure I also feel it will be helpful, but there are so many to choose from.
hostess / cantaloupe / 6486 posts
@loki: I take that back. I did have a one on one hour long meeting with an LC but that's it. It was helpful to calm my fears and I was able to remember things such as "bring baby to the breast, not breast to baby" but all in all I think i would have been okay had I not met with her.
pear / 1787 posts
@As Time Goes By: oh man i would love a solid 2 weeks off to get some stuff done! for some reason i'm feeling pretty low stress about the whole thing until i come read here and feel like i'm slacking haha.
apricot / 306 posts
@marionberry: thanks for the book recs! I am on the hunt for a good 'first year' book so it's good to know to scratch the mayo clinic one off my list. @loki: you will have to let us know what you think of what to expect: the first year. I purchased a couple of pregnancy books and also haven't found them super useful, so I think I might go to the library this week and borrow a few 'first year' books out before I commit to buying anything. .
@ineebee: good news on the glucose test!
While I feel like I have the nursery/gear situation under control, I am feeling a bit overwhelmed by which classes to take. We went to a hospital orientation night last night which was useful but they offer SO many classes... general labor & delivery, c-section, breastfeeding, labor relaxation, infant care, infant CPR, infant safety... not to mention the car seat fitting, the maternity ward tour etc etc... oh my gosh I'm usually OTT with things like this but even to me this seems like too many classes, I have no idea what to do and what to skip.
hostess / cantaloupe / 6486 posts
@lulu22: I also have what to expect the first year. I just read it as Jessie approached each month. I enjoyed it because I like information but it's not a must have in my opinion.
pomelo / 5041 posts
@loki: I by no means want to stress you out, but I found that the last trimester flew by. However, I still think you have plenty of time to get things ready and feel prepared. And remember, the baby basically lives in your room for the first couple of months, so the nursery doesn't really have to be ready when they're born.
pomelo / 5041 posts
@lulu22: let me clarify, the mayo clinic book is actually a very good one, I just didn't feel that I really needed the information as baby continued to grow because he was so easy. As far as classes, focus on those things that you don't feel as comfortable with. I think breast-feeding classes can be helpful if you intend to do that and a general labor class is good too. Anything more specialized or about newborns you could probably give or take depending on your comfort level.
pear / 1787 posts
@marionberry: haha oh man i'm scared! it's approaching even faster for you because you'll likely go early! time is flying, guys. i'm not too worried about the nursery or gear. we have a ton of stuff and i feel pretty prepared to bring her home. i'm mostly worried about the classes and the reading and getting my work situation in order! but all that will come i guess! i'm starting to just get anxious and want her here... i wanna skip all the boring prep stuff!

@SunshineMcC: Sorry you asked this like four days ago but I am just catching up. I'd be happy to share the birth prep exercises we are doing in my Bradley method class. Every day I'm supposed to do the following:
-200 kegels
-tailor sit "often" (this is when you sit on the floor with the soles of your feet pressed against each other)
-birthing-style squat "often" (good description of this here: http://birthbootcamp.com/pregnancy-exercises-for-a-great-birth/)
-160 pelvic rocks + another 80 at bedtime
-10 butterflies (I sit with my back against a wall, DH uses his arms to resist while I try to push my knees outwards)
-25 minutes of activity (most people take a walk, I do a pilates video)
-35 min (broken into five 7-minute intervals throughout the day) of focused relaxation, some by myself and some guided by DH
That's how much I am supposed to be doing about halfway through the 12-week class. You start out a lot easier than that and work up. It's a LOT to keep track of and I almost never get everything done but I try to get through the list at least every other day. I can definitely feel my body responding and changing, so it is making me at least feel more prepared, for whatever that's worth.
pomegranate / 3658 posts
As far as books, I've read most of the Dr. Sears book "The Baby Book from Birth to Age Two" or whatever it's titled. I skimmed a lot of the month-by-month stuff since I figure I'm not going to remember what happens when anyway and I can look it up later. I've also read most of The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, and also From The Hips (which was great and I made DH read it too). I'm starting to feel like there's not a ton more useful info that I can cram into my head about feeding and sleeping and care philosophies at this point. That must mean it's time to turn the focus to adorable nursery decor!
(Oh yeah and I read Happiest Baby on The Block like a year ago when we were TTC. Probably could use a refresher on the 5 S's or whatever.)
