@WALLAROO: what have you given your babies so far for BLW? have you bought any specific feeding gear?
kiwi / 711 posts
@Mrs. High Heels: The only gear we have are the bumkins bibs (which we LOVE. So easy to clean up) and high chairs (the fisher price booster also easy to clean up). So far they have eaten:
roasted sweet potato
avocado
banana
steamed carrot
cucumber (the little ones the size of pickles)
roasted zucchini
roasted butternut squash
watermelon
canteloupe
We started BLW around 6 months. They really weren't into it at all. We put the food on their tray and they didn't even look at it. Took maybe a week for their interest to peak. Now the moment I put something on their tray they pick it up and put it in their mouth. They are still grabbing with their whole fist. Haven't mastered the pincer grasp yet. They will be 7 months tomorrow. Crazy!

@WALLAROO: 7 months already!! Some days I still feel like we just had our babies. J isn't officially 6 months until next week that's why we've only been doing one meal a day starting just a few days ago. I'll keep this list for when we venture into BLW - those look like great first foods to start with. Thank you.

@WALLAROO: Do they have teeth yet? We are still waiting for them to make their debut and I am wondering if we should stick to the softer stuff and hold off on things like cucumber until they've got something to bite with. Also, I am glad to hear that ours aren't the only ones who started with zero interest in the food on their tray - I was wondering if it would ever happen. Patience is a virtue I have not yet learned...
We have the Fisher Price booster seats too and I am happy so far - I love that they fit on the chairs when they are pushed in under the table. We don't have enough room for big high chairs in our place!

@twobee: No teeth yet. We peeled the mini cucumbers and let them gum at it. I think they liked the feel of it on their gums because it was cold. As for the other food items they were all soft enough that they didn't teeth to eat it.

Hey February Mommas!! It's been a while. Nice to see a Feb. 2013 revival on here. : )
B was 6mo on Aug. 5th and we started experimenting with BLW the night before. DH is very skeptical about BLW so we're going slow. We will probably try some purees too just to see how B does with them. So far he's tried:
Avocado
Nectarines
Banana
Roasted Sweet potato
Broccoli
Pancake
Lettuce
Toast
He's been very entertaining to watch to say the least. He usually checks the food out, plays with it for a while than puts it in his mouth. He still more or less just sucks on stuff. I've been trying to over exaggerate chewing in front of him so he gets the idea. He's gagged atleast once on every item he's had which majorly stresses DH out. I try to let him work it out which he has but last night he scared me a little and I had to intervene. He wasn't choking but was having a harder time than I wanted to see with trying to get the piece out.
I'll let you know how purees go when we try them but so far so good!!

@Phillybaby2013: it is sooo entertaining! I forget to eat my own dinner because I keep laughing at how they'll pick up a stick and try to aim for their mouth and miss. Oh and the dogs are now suddenly interested in the babies when they could not have cared less about them the previous 6 month

I'm so excited to see all your BLW ideas. I am so nervous to start! I know she's ready so maybe next Monday we'll start She had a cold with a little rash that has just cleared up so I want to make sure she's 100% before we start so I can gauge if there are any reactions. She can use a pincer grasp so I'm excited to see what she can do! i just feel like this is a huge thing and she won't be a baby anymore - and I have to give up some control because other people will want to feed her etc. Man, all my issues are coming out in these Feb threads!
We have bumkins bibs, a high-chair, a big table cloth to use as a splat mat, and some little glass containers for storing her food. I also got some spoons in case I decide to try some purees, too.
No teeth here, and according to her pedi, none on the immediate horizon
So what's the deal with meat? The BLW book says you can give it right away, right? But I've seen others say their pedis say after 7 or 8 mos. Even though it freaks me out, I like the idea of her getting some iron from steak, especially since I don't get a ton of iron in my diet.

So we finally started! We're doing BLW like I did with Little Boy. B got sweet potato and he loved it. Mostly he was just licking it but there was evidence in his diaper that he did manage to eat a tiny bit!
@JerricaBenton: so I take a developmental approach to feeding- I trust my babe to show me with his skills when he is ready to move on. For example, he won't get peas until I see a pincer grip emerging. For me that means that we won't be doing meat until he can chew we'll enough to eat it. I do understand that the book is basically saying they can gnaw on the meat and get the juices but personally that doesn't jive with me. FWIW you probably don't need to worry about iron too much at this point.

@Baby Boy Mom: interesting. Yeah meat is a little outside my comfort zone so I'll probably hold off. That's awesome that B liked his sweet potato!

@Baby Boy Mom: that's a great tip about the developmental approach. Will definitely keep that in mind as we start our feeding adventures.

@JerricaBenton: @Baby Boy Mom: My ped told us we could start with meat at 7 months but I'm not comfortable yet either. They need more practice chewing before I venture into meat. Slowly but surely they are getting the hang of it though! It's really fun to see them develop.

It's been a couple weeks since we updated, how's it going?
Baby Brother is a little too good at self feeding. Seriously he wishes he could eat all day and hates being in the kitchen now because he's jealous! It is definitely entertaining though. So far we've done: sweet potato, reg potato, carrots (roasted), zucchini (sautéed), watermelon, honeydew, apples, avocado, pineapple and cucumbers. Up next is probably oatmeal but I've been putting it off because I know it's so messy!

We've only been doing solids for a week, but we've tried broccoli and avocado. She's really good at getting it into her mouth and she's gotten a good amount down! She makes the most hilarious faces once she gets the food in her mouth. It makes me so nervous, but hopefully I'll get used to it soon. I have to have my husband with me every time because I'm ready to sweep everything out of her mouth the second she makes a weird face, lol. We offer the zoli cup with water when she eats and she loves it! I was surprised that she knew exactly what to do! She never took a bottle so I thought it might take time. I actually take it away so she doesn't drink too much. Zucchini is next on the menu!

@Baby Boy Mom: Does your LO have any teeth? I forget if you mentioned it before...
pomegranate / 3872 posts
@Baby Boy Mom: and he did well with the apple? No teeth over her either and it makes me so nervous. Not like one or two little front teeth would do anything lol. BLW confuses me a little bit because Im not sure what the perfect texture is. Too hard and I'm afraid chunks will come off but too soft and it turns to mush when she picks it up. Not too ripe avocado was perfect but I know we need to branch out!
pomegranate / 3983 posts
@JerricaBenton: Actually not that well with the apple. I left the skin on so that it wouldn't be slippery and he sort of gnawed on it and got a tiny bit. That's definitely one of the things that just takes time...With veggies that need to be cooked I've found that roasting gets the best texture BUT I keep it covered in the oven so that it doesn't get that crustiness on the outside (then take a few pieces out for B and uncover so that we do get it). I don't know what you have in season now, but summer fruits are really easy and in the fall pears are great too. Also cucumbers- I get the little ones and gave it to him in a stick; he scraped it all out and only left the skin.

I started my LO on avocado this weekend. DH and I were so excited to start solids. We tried Saturday and Sunday and she ended up with a rash on her belly, arms, and face. She was eating topless so all the area with the rash were actually touched by avocado. I don't know if that makes a difference.
To complicate things, I noticed around week 5 that when I eat dairy LO breaks out and when I eat wheat LO spits up. Of course, I had to have a meatball sandwich on Friday. So, I have major mom guilt that the rash isn't avocado related at all and could be just what I ate on Friday.
I need to re-evaluate what we'll do for a second food. I was thinking egg yolk but I'm more worried about allergies now.

@Baby Boy Mom: yeah I'm going to try roasting veggies instead of steaming. I was wondering about the crust but that's a good tip to cover them!
