@birdofafeather: I can't believe you made a waxing appt for 2 days past your EDD! You're jinxing yourself, I think

Husband and I had a moment yesterday where we realized that this baby is OUR baby. We are it's parents. It's family. No one else is responsible for him/her -- just us. For basically the rest of our lives. It was sobering, to be sure.

@birdofafeather: I would be OK with him being late. I flip-flop between being so excited and ready for him to come and thinking, uh, he can stay in there!

@littlebug: crossing my fingers that you go into labor before the 17th! i think you will regardless, like you said, it's nice to have a backup "it's definitely going to happen by this time" date.

@allison: i know, so crazy, right? thoughts of the enormity of parenthood were stressing me out last weekend so i'm trying to take it one step at a time.

@dagret: i totally feel the same way--excited to meet him, but okay with him staying in there.

Well I had an appointment this morning. I'm 38 weeks and baby boy weighs about 9 lbs. I have an induction scheduled for 1/16 - if I don't go before then. My doctor is worried about increased chance of csection because of his size. I also wasn't dilated at all. Soft but closed. I wasn't sure how I'd feel about induction, but honestly, I'm good with it at this point and really excited to meet our little man!

@coacheswife123: wow 9 lbs! i hope you go into labor any day now, but that's great to have a scheduled induction.

i had my first cervical check today (38 weeks) and i'm 1 cm dilated, 50% effaced. doesn't mean much, but at least athe doctor could tell the baby was head down.

@allison: i'm willing to go past 41 weeks if everything is looking okay. i don't want to go past 42 weeks though (that's my doctor's policy, also), just because of what i've heard about the chances of problems sharply increasing after 42 weeks.

@edelweiss: yay for head down! its starting to get kind of exciting on this board! Hoping we have lots of babies SOON!

Well...Now I'm hoping I go early. My due date is Jan. 25.

DH's holiday party is Monday the 28th, and he has meetings at his office HQ all day monday, the party in the evening, and then a "corporate retreat" tuesday & Wednesday. His boss - who has known my exact due date since before Christmas - now wants him to drive to NJ (we're in Central PA) on *Sunday night* and stay near their HQ through COB Wednesday. AAAAAAHHHHH....DH is pretty livid, as his boss didn't even tell him about this "mandatory retreat" until today... Not that he'll *want* to go and leave a newborn and me alone, but it will be so much easier if I'm not pregnant at that point.

Question: what does it feel like when the baby drops? All day today, the bottom part of my belly and everything below feels different. Not really painful, necessarily, but kind of? And it's only when I'm standing up. Which makes me think that the baby dropped. Buuut it might just be wishful thinking.

  12. dagret

    grapefruit / 4235 posts

@allison: for me, the first thing I noticed was that my bra band wasn't as tight, and that I could actually see the egg-shaped edge of my uterus distinct from the bottom of my boobs...if that makes sense. I feel kicks lower again, just above my belly button. And I realized he *really* dropped when I could pull my chair the whole way up to my desk again.

ETA: also, the bottom of my belly felt tighter. It's his head pushing right up against it.

@dagret: what??? "mandatory"? that's not cool. it's like a rock and a hard place, but i agree that i hope you have the baby by then so you aren't going into labor and getting to the hospital all by yourself! is there any flexibility on this? i'm livid for you.

@edelweiss: he's basically being told that if he doesn't go, they wont fire him or anything but it will look really bad for his career. Grgh.

It's not a small company so I guess he could plead fmla, that they can't absolutely make him go, but its ridiculous that his boss didn't tell him that any sooner.

@coacheswife123: I wish my practice would give us idea of how big or little guy is. I haven't had an us since 26 weeks. They just keep telling me I'm measuring on-track.

@dagret: WHAT?! Mandatory? I'd be so angry. Could he go on the provision that if you call, he's allowed to leave, no questions asked? That way he'd putting in the effort and showing his faced, our whatever.

@allison: Baby boy totally dropped a lot today. The bottom of my belly now feels ridiculously, painfully heavy. And the top, which is usually kind of hard from his butt, is a little mushier than usual. I thought he dropped a week or so ago, and he might have a little, but nothing like today, for sure.

@littlebug: so frustrating. Our guy has been way ahead my whole pregnancy so they may have been keeping an extra eye on him ! Are you finally on your mat leave ? My last day is Friday !

@coacheswife123: Yes, as of Monday afternoon, I've been out. Wasn't supposed to start until today, but since I was feeling so crappy on Monday, I left early and just told my boss I was starting leave then.

@allison: re: baby dropping - My baby's head is lowered into my pelvis and I can feel a pressure against my pelvis when I'm standing or sitting (I have to sit with my legs really wide apart!). Also occasional short pains low down, kind of like round ligament pains.

@birdofafeather: @heartsnsunshine: Oh wow! How many weeks are y'all again? You're both a little bit early, right?

I think the stat that only 10% of first time moms' water breaks before labor starts is BS. It has to be way more common than that!

Shit is gettin' REAL around here, y'all!

Realized I havent posted my birth story here so cross posting from WB. I think my favorite part is reading everyones birth stories because they are all so different but they all change your life forever
I went into preterm labor at 32 weeks 6 days ( Dec 9th) . I didn't know at the time that I was in labor, but I had lost my mucus plug at night and the next morning I had the "bloody show". I called the Dr and he said to go into L&D to be be safe. I did and and once they hooked me up they noticed I was having regular contractions I didnt realize the tighening I was having was real contractions. I was at 3cm and admitted to the hospital. I had to stay for 3 and a half days and I was put on meds to stop the contractions. I got up to 5cm but with the meds and bed rest I went back to 4cm and all contractions stopped so I got to go home. I was on strict bed rest and had to have weekly Dr. appointments and 2 non stress tests at the hospital every week.

Everything was going smoothly until about the 26th or so I noticed I was having some tightening on the top of my belly again but nothing consistent. Then on the 30th they turned into crampy contractions, but I didn't really think they were contractions. I so did not want to be the crazy lady that called labor when it wasn't so I waited till that evening and at 7:30pm I called my Dr. By that time they were time-able and were coming every 5 minutes or so. I called DH home from work and by the time he got home, about 45 minutes later, they were about every 2 minutes. We got to L&D about 9:30pm and got hooked up and indeed I was having contractions. I was 35 weeks 6 days and the goal was to get me to 36 weeks, so the Dr said it was time and they were not going to stop the contractions again.
Once we got into a room at about 10:30pm things moved really fast. I was trying to get thru the contractions but they were getting intense. I requested an epidural at this point. They still needed to get all the paperwork and initial tests back before I could get the epidural so they tried to hurry. I think I got it at about 12:30am, to me this was the worst part, I cried and wondered to myself if I had made the right decision. Even though I wanted one all along, I still wondered. They checked me again and I was 8cm with the water bulging. They wanted to break the water but once the epidural fully kicked in my blood pressure fell. They had to call the anesthesiologist back in several times over the next hour and a half to adjust the amount and to bring my blood pressure back up. I ended up having to get 4 injections of ephedrine and one injection of something else because the ephedrine didn't work. Once I got back to a good BP my Dr came in and checked I was 9cm and he broke the water, and I immediately was 10 so it was time to push. I only pushed for 30 minutes and she was born. Since it went so quick I didn't stretch out enough and I had to have a small episiotomy. DH was amazing during it all (except the part where he was texting all his buddies). He held his breath and pushed with me, lol. And once she was here he said "you made that look easy" not exactly what I wanted to hear but it made everyone in the room laugh. Since the baby was 4 weeks early the NICU team was there but she was perfect and after about 10 minutes I got to have skin to skin. She is tongue tied and did have some feeding issues the first few days but it has gotten better. She has been amazing!

So excited for all the January mommas!! Cant wait to see all the pics!
