@Bookworm: Love the nursery!!! AND! your name selection =)!!

@Foodnerd81: I agree with you we won't be posting our ultrasounds on there. I always cringe when people do it and put all the medical info that is printed out too visible for the internet world!!

How about everyone else?? How is the name selection coming? We have actually settled on a name and are sharing with family and friends ahead of time.

We're rolling with Wesley =) it is a family name!!

Earlier this month I finally started clearing out the room we are going to be using as a nursery (it has essentially been a storage room since we moved in). I can't wait until I can start decorating though, it sounds so much more fun than cleaning! So far we've bought a crib and a dresser and I've added some other stuff I want to a registry.

As for a name, I haven't really put any thought into it yet. My DH has three names that he likes and we haven't ruled any of those out yet, but I told him I wanted to look a little on my own before we really discussed it. But for some reason I haven't been in the mood- maybe because it's such a big decision and I hate decisions.

@Foodnerd81 and @SouthPaw: I'm not posting any ultrasound photos on facebook either. I did announce on facebook though a little after 20 weeks. My aunt had bought us a little pink shirt that said future snow bunny when we were on a ski trip, so I posted a picture of that with a caption that said "Coming July 2013".

Hi everyone! I've been very quiet for a very loooong time! I guess I was having difficulty feeling pregnant because I was, in fact, feeling nothing! (And that made me feel guilty) But now Baby is kicking around, my mood has improved and things are looking much better!
    Here we go!

    Due Date?: July 25th
Team? BLUE! Dr already saw the goods at our 16 week scan! We're trying to keep it a secret from family and friends - NOT easy but practice makes perfect I guess!
How's your bump growing? Slow but steady! It's coming along nicely now, people are beginning to notice! I've been in mat jeans since week 8 or so and I'm so sick of them though! I'm dying for spring to get here so I can change my wardrobe a little!
Movement? YES! First real movement was at 19 weeks, I was so relieved to finally feel something! At first I only felt him at night, now I've started to notice little kicks during the day when I'm at work too! Although I have to say the kicks themselves still feel weird to me (as in, if I didn't know there was a baby in there, I'd be freaking out), I love getting those little signs of life! DH can feel them sometimes and that's awesome too!
Anything else you want to share? Haven't really started on the nursery yet because we need to clear out the room first. And we're so stuck finding a name for the little guy! Haven't found any name that we both absolutely love and I'm guessing that'll be quite the journey! I'm not stressed though, when we meet him we'll know his name!

Hope everyone keeps on enjoying their pregnancies! And I promise to help keep this thread alive!

Aww so sweet to hear about your nurseries! With DS we knew we wanted to co-sleep so I didn't bother with a nursery at all. There's a little corner of the bedroom that has his stuff and he shares a closet with DH. We live in a 2 br townhouse and I just couldn't give up my extra space! Now that he's 2 and has so many books and toys, that extra bedroom is partially his play area (along with the living room downstairs) and partially a work room/sitting room for me. I think you just have to figure out what works for you and know that it will change as your baby grows up!

Now that we are adding one more to the family bed, I'm thinking we may need to get a twin bed to make our sleep space larger, but that's it. I might make DD a new mobile and change the artwork on the 'baby' wall a little. Also since we are likely moving out-of-state later this year, I can't really get motivated to make many changes.

I also wanted to remind everyone that now would be a good time to start thinking about hiring a doula. Depending on where you live, it may be difficult to find one last-minute. Most doulas will meet up with you a couple of times before labor to get to know you and help you write a birth plan.

Take care all! I'm in bed today with a nasty stomach bug (thanks, DS!) so I might be on HB a lot, lol...

I am on my phone and autocorrect hates me so if there are typos I blame Siri.

@mrsvdv: welcome and congratulations!!!! I am happy to hear you are connecting more with the little one now that you've felt some movement:)

@glimmersnaps: I hope that you are feeling better!! Have you written your birth plan? I feel like every time I talk about what I want to do people say ohhh well it's all different when you're in there etc. I am terrified of needles and the thought of an epidermal remaining in my back, I can hop out of bed or be mobile is sadly giving me anxiety as I write this! DH was finally exposed to how bad my anxiety actually is last year when I had a kidney infection and needed to go to the hospital. I needed an IV and nearly broke his hand as he tried to tell me it's all going to be ok... Sweet of me right? Anywho he gets it and will support me. I am ok w an IV but an epideral phew getting sick thinking about it now!!!

Any other people out there trying to figure out some birth issues?:)

@SouthPaw: Yep, me! I am very on the fence as to what kind of birth I would 'prefer.' I am totally at my doctor's mercy though, and if she says I need a C-section or whatever, I'll do it...but I'm very tempted to go natural and try to not have an epidural, mostly because of anxiety like you! The thought of being tied to the bed and not able to move is pretty terrifying to me. So is pain, though lol. I have an appointment next week and I think I'm going to start asking her about my options.

@southpaw @bookworm I felt the same way before I had my son. We did Bradley childbirth classes and went to a midwife practice instead of an OB. I think you just have to do everything possible to avoid interventions but also accept that some might still happen. Just like with any plan it's unlikely that things will work out exactly the way you've pictured it, but having an idea of what you want and how to get there will put you closer to your goal. I think a doula can be helpful is helping you through your planning process. Also during labor she will stay with you. Doctors, nurses, and even midwives aren't going to be with you throughout your labor. I know for me it helped to have someone there who was 100% calm and reassuring.

Thanks for the well wishes! I'm feeling much better today but still taking it easy. I'm on the couch watching Blues Clues with my toddler now

@glimmersnaps: I think you just have to do everything possible to avoid interventions but also accept that some might still happen.

That's exactly my plan. I'm going to take a class that focuses on natural birth but will cover info about interventions, and I'll read up on the interventions and stuff, but hope to go without. However, I know enough people who planned to go intervention-free and couldn't for a million different reasons that if it happens, so be it, so long as baby and I both make it out healthy.

OK, fine, I tell myself all this now... talk to me in 4 months and see what song I'm singing...

I'm pretty chill about birth at the moment. I've decided that it's not going to hurt and all the millions of women who testify to it hurting are just wimps.... it's my own take on hypnobirthing, wishful thinking so hard it simply HAS to come true!! I'm hoping to go without interventions but I do understand that these things sometimes have to happen.

@mrsvdv: Welcome! And yay for team blue!

    @glimmersnaps: Glad you're feeling better!

As for birth plans, I don't really have one. I know I for suuure want an epidural! I'll take all the modern medicine I can, haha. I hate cramps, so I know a natural birth would not work for me. I'm hoping my water breaks first so I have to go to the hospital fairly quickly, instead of laboring for hours and hours on my own. Can I put in a request for that? lol... I also really want skin to skin after he's born.

I have marginal placenta previa, so it is possible that if it doesn't migrate I *could* need a c section. I'm OK with that too. Whatever gets him here and healthy!

@Cherrybee: I like your way of thinking! No pain at all! Sounds good to me

  11. Foodnerd81

I'm the only one who is team green on here?? That's so funny-- I think at least half the people I know in real life are/were.

I think I've reached the point where my belly comes out further than my boobs-- which had already grown early in the pregnancy. It's quite strange! And yet, still, no one offers me their seat on the train, even when I'm standing in profile directly in front of them (in a winter coat, to be perfectly fair).

  12. mrsvdv

    apricot / 431 posts

@Cherrybee: Good plan! A close friend of mine gave birth in January and she says she felt nothing at all! They asked her if she wanted an epidural, she said yes because she was so scared of waiting too long and not being able to get one later, but actually she never felt any pain.. For some reason I don't think it'll be like this for me though!

The only "birth plan" I have for now is to remain as calm as possible, try to breath through the pain and get medication if needed (though I'm also scared of that needle in my spine). My biggest wish is that he comes out safe and healthy and that we can have skin to skin right away.

  13. mrsvdv

    apricot / 431 posts

@Foodnerd81: I think it's cool you're team green! I hardly know anybody irl who didn't know the sex before giving birth!

My belly has reached that point where all of a sudden everybody who comes into work seems to notice I'm pregnant! This literally happened last Thursday, so funny because in my mind it was really obvious I was pregnant weeks and weeks ago and I wondered why nobody ever said anything about it!

  14. SouthPaw

    cherry / 204 posts

@Foodnerd81: it's pretty awesome to notice the growth so I am happy for you!!! It is frustrating in situations like you were describing on the train but soon enough you'll have people giving you their seat

As far as team green, I am soooooo impatient and DH & I are planners so we weren't going to be able to hold off =) I think it is AWESOME that you are able to have this be a surprise, i've heard it's one of the only 'true' surprises you have left in life!

@mrsvdv: I agree with you safe and healthy is by far the best part of the birth plan =) I absolutely have no qualms with getting any form of intervention that does not involve and epidural solely for the needle lol it's not the drugs... I am a huge wuss with needles but other pain etc I can roll with.

How have I never joined this thread?!?! May I please join you ladies?

    Due Date?: July 5th

Team? BLUE! Can't wait to meet our little man.

How's your bump growing? It's getting HUGE! I'm finally to the point where strangers stop to ask about it. I think it really popped in the past 2 weeks or so. Funny thing is, at last month's appt. my doctor told me I need to eat more because I wasn't gaining enough weight. I went on Wednesday, and he told me I gained too much weight! Lol. So annoying!

Movement? I am convinced I am baking a future soccer player or kickboxer. Lol. I am pretty sure I have bruises on the inside from him. Not complaining though! I love having a happy and active baby

Anything else you want to share? If I can drag DH out of bed sometime soon then we will be starting his nursery today (putting together furniture). We decided on a navy and white nursery with pops of yellow. We are using different prints (polka dots, stripes, chevron) for contrast. I can't wait until it all comes together.

Also, our little man will be named Brady Paul. We are huge Baltimore Orioles fans, and DH is beyond excited to have a little boy to share our baseball love with. So, we named him after DH's favorite Oriole, Brady Anderson.

I am so excited to share the last few months of this journey with you ladies. I am just sad I didn't join in earlier!

If there were already sugar in your urine, would the doctor have told you? Mine hasn't mentioned it either way.

  24. Ra

    honeydew / 7586 posts

@Pepper: I am taking mine this Friday, too. Is it weird that I asked the lab if I needed to fast and they said no? They said just wait two hours after eating.

  25. Pepper

    pomelo / 5820 posts

@Anagram: I think it can be normal to have a bit of sugar in your urine, but a high level would indicate the need for the screening test right away. That's what I understand, anyway! My doctor never mentioned it either.

@rahlyrah: I think that's what my doctor said too, I know for sure you don't have to fast. I made my appointment in the morning so I wouldn't have to think too much about it and/or forget and eat something too close to the test!

  26. Anagram

    eggplant / 11716 posts

@rahlyrah: For the first one, there's no fasting....just no eating 2 hours before as your doctor said. The second one (if you don't pass the first) is where you have to do the 12-14 hours of fasting. SCARY. Because it's not even over after you show up at the office---you have to be at the office for another 3 hours! starving!

@Pepper: Just had mine schedule for April 8th. They gave me the bottle of glucose drink to bring home so I can drink it before the appt and DH said it looked like pee I said if your pee looks like orange gatorade maybe we should take you to the dr,.....

My midwife hasn't mentioned a glucose screening, but I'm almost a full month behind some of you (EDD 7/30). I guess she will probably mention it at the next appt. I'm the worst at fasting and just being hungry in general, so I really hope it's only the 2 hour one!

PSA: I had my glucose screening today and had an AWFUL reaction. I got super dizzy, was seeing spots, and felt drunk. Like really, really drunk.

DH is out of town on vacation so I went alone. I really should not have driven and am honestly shocked they let me leave (I told them what was happening, I wasn't sure if it was normal). I drove straight to Chic-Fil-A and the poor girl there must've thought I was on drugs because I could barely get a sentence out. I ate and then kept my mom on the phone with me while drove the rest of the way home. Then I slept for 2 hours.

Point of the story? If you can AT ALL help it, do not go alone! Try to get your SO or a friend/family member to go with you just in case your body reacts the way mine does. Not trying to freak anyone out, just want to keep everyone safe!

  31. Pepper

    pomelo / 5820 posts

@rahlyrah: Oh my goodness, that is frightening!! Sorry you had such a terrible reaction Did you feel like that as soon as you drank it, or did it take awhile?

I had my screen today too. I had the orange flavor and it honestly tasted like thick orange soda. Not too bad. I went to a newer Quest and they had a lounge in the back with recliners and TV so you could relax while you waited an hour. I felt very slightly nauseated by the time the hour was up, I think because I went in the morning, so my stomach was totally empty.

  32. Ra

    honeydew / 7586 posts

@Pepper: Glad yours went better than mine! It took about 45 mins before I started feeling bad. My mom and DH have always suspected that I might be hypoglycemic, which may have accounted for my reaction. It was scary though!

Also, the baby was going crazy the whole time and for a few hours after. Lol. Total sugar rush for the little guy. Was your LO bouncing off the uterus walls?

  33. glimmersnaps

    apricot / 491 posts

    @Rahlyrah Welcome!

Sorry I feel bad for not mentioning the glucose screening. I'm sure every place does things differently, though. At my midwife's office, they give you the drink to take home at the visit prior to the one at about 24 weeks. The instructions are to eat and drink normally and then drink the entire bottle within 5 minutes. After you drink the bottle, you can't have anything-- even water. And they draw blood exactly one hour after you've finished the bottle.

So I didn't have to fast beforehand at all, and I still felt a little woozy. DS was throwing a fit so that didn't help matters. But my best advice is to carry a little snack so you can eat/drink something immediately after the blood draw. I'd suggest something protein-y like nuts or pumpkin seeds because you likely won't want sweet. Also, whatever you eat before, try to make it high in protein. To me it was difficult getting the drink down. It's best to keep it ice cold to help it taste slightly better. It's like Gatorade and Mountain Dew had a love child who binged on Pixie Sticks.

Hope everyone passes Happy baby growing...

  34. Pepper

    pomelo / 5820 posts

@rahlyrah: Still, very scary! Glad you got home OK. As for the little guy, oh my gosh, YES, he was going nuts after the test, and for most of the day! He loved it, lol. At least the babies like the test!

@glimmersnaps: I agree, the colder the better!

Well, I got my results back online (they always post my lab results to my health insurance's website without calling me first if they're not bad), and it appears I passed! However, it looks like I'm slightly anemic (they drew blood for Hgb and HCT), so I'm sure he'll be addressing that at my OB appointment on Wednesday. Hoping I don't have to take iron pills!

  37. Ra

    honeydew / 7586 posts

@Pepper: So funny you posted this! My OB called me a few hours ago to tell me I passed...and that I am slightly anemic! She ordered a backup blood test for me. From what I read though, slight anemia is common and usually doesn't require extra treatment. Hopefully, we will fall into that category.

They don't tell you before you get pregnant how much you are going to be poked and prodded

  38. Pepper

    pomelo / 5820 posts

@rahlyrah: That's so funny how similar our results are! Glad you passed and fingers are definitely crossed that we won't need extra treatment

  39. glimmersnaps

    apricot / 491 posts

@Pepper @Rahlyrah They will probably just advise you to eat more iron-rich foods. My mw gives every patient a long list of foods high in iron because it's so common. I was borderline too and she just told me to pick 2 or 3 foods off the list and try to eat more of them. It's a lot of foods I don't really care for, but one I like is pumpkin seeds.

Try to avoid iron pills because they will cause constipation! Also drinking Nettle Leaf tea can help with your blood production.
