Anyone thinking about coming home outfits for baby yet? I haven’t had a baby born when it’s warm out so have no idea what to put him in if it’s summery out! My girls both wore long sleeve footie body suits but I’m nervous he’ll be too hot (we don’t have AC at home).

@Becky: I’d love to knock this off the to-do list but I’m a little worried that whatever I buy will be the wrong size. With my hx if DD coming at 32 weeks and being 4 lbs (came home in a size premie dress) and DH and all his brothers being 11+ lb babies - I don’t want to buy a size I can’t use. But I suppose I could hunt for something I love and then pick the size once we have a few more ultrasounds and get a sense of how big he might be.

    persimmon / 1390 posts

@yellowbeach: That’s a good idea to wait and see. My girls were both similar sizes (8 lbs 7 oz and 8 lbs 3 oz) so I’m good with that part. I’ll have to pick the brains of some moms around here who have had spring/summer babies to see what they wear because I’m clueless! I’m not planning on buying an outfit at least since we have so many clothes coming our way. Maybe this will be the one time I overpack for the hospital!

I was just talking to my DH about going home outfits for our little girl. My dad just recently told me he picked out all my siblings going home outfits. So I asked my DH to pick out our little girls and he wants to get her a car burglar inspired outfit. Which made me laugh. I told him that’s not what I had in mind so I get veto. 🤣🤣🤣

Gosh in an IVF June 2020 Fb group I belong to, there are two women who are having/had babies in the last 24 hrs. One woman had her twins yesterday at 23w6d and the other is 25w today with an incompetent cervix and her sac half way down her canal now on hospital bed rest until she delivers. Scary stuff. Cook babies, cook!

@Becky: I don’t even remember what my kids wore coming home from the hospital (I’ve got pictures just have to dig them up) so I don’t think I made a big deal about it last time but reading your post made me think about it and I just ordered some cute outfits. They’ll get plenty of use even if she doesn’t wear them home from the hospital because I love gowns for babies.

I think we’d have to unknot them for the car seat but they should work?

@Becky: TBH, I didn't even think about this with my first. I didn't even buy anything in newborn size (the doc kept telling me he was going to be huge...he was 8lbs4oz) but a friend gifted me a nb size outfit so I used that. It was still too big on him!

I’ll probably use one of these

  12. Becky

    persimmon / 1390 posts

I love the cute outfits! I didn’t get anything special for my first 2 and I guess my question is more: what do you dress a newborn in in the summer?! I’m just worried he’s going to be too hot or too cold! We live in WNY and don’t have AC at home which is where we will be heading from the hospital (drive is 15-20 minutes).

  13. JCCovi

    kiwi / 705 posts

@Becky: I had a September baby and we did a lot of diaper time and skin to skin when it was hot. We were in the South and had AC though so could dress her pretty regularly most of the time. This time around we’re in CA and don’t have AC but our apartment is pretty cool. We’ll probably still do a lot of diaper time and focus on keeping air circulating inside.

@Becky: @JCCovi: I live in Texas, so everything is air conditioned, so I think the sleeves and long pants will be fine at birth. Most of my son's hand-me-downs are short sleeve onsies and pants. I'll probably do a lot of diaper+onsies and swaddle for sleep.
At the birth class I attended for DS, I seem to remember that the nurse said to dress the baby as we would dress - in other words, if we feel we need to wear long sleeves (sitting, not active), then follow suit for baby. I don't know if that's 100% accurate (it's been >3 years), but that's what I'm remembering.

Had a follow up scan yesterday. Turns out they did a fetal echocardiogram as well. All good news thankfully, little girl is measuring just a few days ahead and 78th percentile for her weight.

They reminded me that due to my age I’ll be seeing them twice a week at 36 weeks for NST. After asking what that is, not really looking forward to being at the doctors strapped up to measure her movement and stuff that often. But I told myself whatever is necessary for this little one is worth it in the long run ...

  16. BUNBUN

    apricot / 430 posts

@MrsJBeeG: Twice a week or twice a month?
As I'm 40, my appointments increase to 1/week at the end, but I can't remember if those are for NST, ultrasounds or just doppler.

  17. MrsJBeeG

    clementine / 787 posts

@BUNBUN: twice a week is their protocol for NST since I’m over 40. It’s worth it but it won’t be fun.

@MrsJBeeG: Wow, that is a lot! But you're right, totally worth it!

Ladies I have a question related to the nursery. Especially since this is our first child and everyone else on here already has more experience with babies then me.

Did you have a rocking chair/glider in your nursery (or on the house) and how much did you use it? We are about to start renovating the bedroom that is going to be the nursery (and my office as it’s a huge bedroom) in March. And I have this super comfortable large PB chair and ottoman in the room. It’s my favorite reading spot and you could call it my chair to hide away from the craziness of life at times. I could get a glider but then may have to end up getting rid of the chair due to space constraints. I’m also not desiring to spend a ton of money on a chair if it’s not really needed because we are renovating our whole house without going into debt - something near and dear to both my DH and I.

We do have an antique rocking chair in great shape in the house - I just hadn’t planned on putting it in the nursery (it won’t go with the color of the crib and dresser I intend to get for this baby).

Any of your thoughts/experiences would be so welcome.

  20. Becky

    persimmon / 1390 posts

@MrsJBeeG: I honestly used our glider/rocker a ton. I think some of this depends on what your baby likes though (both of mine really liked the rocking motion). I would wait to get the glider since you already have a comfy chair, and just see if the chair works for you. We originally had an old rocking chair and replaced it with a glider because it wasn’t comfortable enough. Also our glider was not expensive, and I’m always seeing used ones on FB Marketplace so maybe check there if you do end up wanting one.

@MrsJBeeG: I used our glider a ton, but I think I mainly used it because it was a super comfy chair, not because of the gliding itself. If you love your old chair I'd keep it for now and only consider switching if you find yourself standing and swaying with the baby so much and not using the chair.

    clementine / 787 posts

@Becky: @MountainBaby: thanks for the thoughts! You’ve helped confirm my logical thoughts which is keep the comfortable chair and ottoman that I love for now but be open to a rocker/glider if sitting in the chair with the baby isn’t working down the road.

  23. JCCovi

    kiwi / 705 posts

@MrsJBeeG: You can buy conversion kits or pay someone to convert the chair you love into a rocker/glider. I’m not sure but I imagine you could convert it back down the road.

@MrsJBeeG: I can't imagine that coming home outfit, definitely a veto! I inherited a leather rocking recliner and even with my winter babies, I just stuck a blanket on it and nursed them in the dark in their rooms. We just made do with what we had and it worked out fine, you never know if your kid is going to hate it anyway.

@JCCovi: Those gowns look super cute!

@Becky: I really liked cotton sleepers for summertime, especially in the early days where the roll-over sleeves keep them from scratching themselves. For an extra hot day, just a onesie is fine or you can keep a gauzy blanket on hand to add a super-light layer without having to redo their outfit.

Where is everyone on deciding names? We have some front runners but I can’t really remember how/when we went about definitively choosing one for the first 2. Did a name just click? I know we decided well before the hospital with DD and DS but I can’t remember if it was a moment of clarity or just a decision to select our favorite name.

  26. MrsJBeeG

    clementine / 787 posts

@JCCovi: we settled on our baby’s name early one once we confirmed it’s a girl - we had the name in mind for a girl. Would probably still be figuring it out if we were having a boy. So we call her by the name all the time and everyone knows that’s the name we picked out. Happily everyone loves it but we’d still name her it even if people didn’t.

  27. BUNBUN

    apricot / 430 posts

@JCCovi: We are having the toughest time with names! With DS, we agreed on one name long before we were even married, and had a few backups.
My fave girl name is now the name of my BFF's (also DS's Godmother) DD, so that's off the table.
DH and I can't find even one name that we both love or really like. Here's hoping something rises to the top of the list in the next 3 months!
But even with that front-runner for DS, we kept it a secret and didn't make the final decision until after he was born. We felt like we had to meet him first

  28. JCCovi

    kiwi / 705 posts

@MrsJBeeG: So nice to settle it early! We have always called our kids nicknames in the womb, even once we agreed on a name they kept their nickname until they were born. This baby is "Baby Secret"

@BUNBUN: We kept the name secret with our first, but with our second we chose a slightly more controversial name. So we released early so people could get it out of their system. Most of the responses were positive but my one grandma did say "I don't know about that..." lol. We haven't decided what we're going to do this time. Probably share since my kids are so much older (5 and 6) and we'll want them to have some time to adjust to the name. My DD is desperate to name her Carmen San Diego.

  29. BUNBUN

    apricot / 430 posts

@JCCovi: Carmen San Diego! I love it!
That's funny about releasing the name early so folks can get used to it. My MIL has *opinions* about names as a speech therapist for preschoolers. She definitely mentioned that she felt DS's name could be a disadvantage if he had trouble with "th" Thankfully, he did not.

  30. Becky

    persimmon / 1390 posts

@JCCovi: We decided a long time ago that it would be Jack Cassidy (DH technically got to choose but I liked it too). Since Jack is a common/widely accepted name so we did share. I love that our girls can call him by his name! The only thing is that Jack Cassidy was apparently an actor when my parents generation was younger so some people associate it with that, but whatever.

We told DD1 what DD2’s name would be and that she had to keep it as a secret. She was only 2 and she didn’t tell anyone!

  31. JCCovi

    kiwi / 705 posts

@Becky: I love that she was able to keep it a secret! I actually just remembered that when my Aunt was pregnant with her 3rd or 4th they told all the kids and told them to keep it a secret but that they could share if they really wanted to. But then they told extended family it was fair game to try to get it out of the kids! The kids were really good about not telling and only one Aunt was able to ‘’trick’’ her niece into revealing it.

  32. MrsJBeeG

    clementine / 787 posts

@JCCovi: what a fun story about your Aunt and names. My family would have had a field day trying to trick a kid into saying the name.

  33. MountainBaby

    cherry / 160 posts

We haven't decided on names yet since we're waiting for the 20 week scan to find out gender. 4 more weeks! hard to be patient!

With our first we kept the name secret until she was born and really liked that. However, this time it would be nice to tell DD the name so she can get used to it, get ready for baby more concretely. So we haven't decided what we'll do yet.

@yellowbeach: Yay! You look so good!

So our new neighbors were out last night and I had the kids go over to introduce themselves. DS (5) took it on himself to manage introductions and he totally took me by surprise by introducing the baby in my tummy and informing our neighbor that the baby has no teeth... Thanks bud.

We just haven't had time/energy to do names, but we have a current girl frontrunner name that we're keeping secret. Since we're team green, we also keep the names secret. DD was a Lydia for about 10 minutes before I decided she just wasn't a Lydia.

@JCCovi: That's an awesome story, when my kids are older, I want to do that!

So yesterday wasn't great - slept like crap and started having a dull headache in the morning. After a little bit felt woozy and had some fuzzy vision, so I had someone check my blood pressure. 130/100, 130/90, 148/89... I was out of town of course, so I went back to where I was staying to lie down and rest and page the on-call OB. By that time my BPs went back to normal (thank god) but they still wanted me to come home and be seen last night.

So I went to L&D so they could test urine, get some labs and monitor baby and my BPs for a few hours. Everything checked out perfectly which was amazing news. I'm NOT jazzed about having a micropremie after having had a regular premie. That was difficult enough. But all looks well for now. Going to cut back on my hours at work a bit from 30-40 down to 20-30 just to not push it.

  40. Becky

    persimmon / 1390 posts

@yellowbeach: Oh man that is stressful. How many weeks was your first born at? Crossing my fingers the fewer hours helps out. Will you still be able to send your older one to daycare so you can relax?

I just accepted a new job that has been months in the making. It’s similar to what I was doing but over a wider region with some statewide responsibilities. I’ll be able to work at home when needed which i am so relieved about for the last few weeks—it should make it easier to keep working until the end.

I have my first appointment with new providers tomorrow, a group of midwives that is always available during delivery. Our hospital system also just started offering a “Moms in Motion” class to go over active labor positions and the options they have available. I feel so lucky we have open minded providers and hospitals here.
