@smurfette, ah boo I want you to have silver star plates too!
I went ahead and bought some stuff from hobby lobby today. Plates, twine, balloons, curling ribbon, cupcake liners, edible glitter, pink and turquoise food dye for the frosting, matching straws...I have to go to party city eventually, too. They have the square color I want. I have white platters at home to serve off of.
Has anyone ever rented a helium tank? Now I'm gonna have to blow up these balloons haha

@blackbird: I thinking about buying one of those tanks they sell at party city. I think they are $30-$40.

@Smurfette: I saw this blog post tonight and it totally reminded me of your theme, even though they use glittery hearts instead of stars:
http://www.karaspartyideas.com/2014/01/pink-gold-valentines-day-party.html
I love the way they used pink watercolor and gold glittery text to label everything. And where did they find that gold washi tape?! So pretty!
Ha, I am trying to stay off this thread until we sign contracts and definitely have a place to throw the party.

@QueensBee: I love it!! I ordered pink and silver glitter washi tape on etsy. Should be here this week!

I just remembered that my brother's neighbor is a FANTASTIC baker so I just contacted her about making the cupcakes for the party!!! And then I'll just have my brother transport them the morning of!

@dojo: @photojane: We don't have a dollar tree or hobby lobby near us. Last time I went to Big Lots looking for tissue paper (was a bit of a drive) and they didn't even have the colors I wanted. I'm going to order from Paper Mart (http://www.papermart.com/tissue-paper/id=19034-INDEX)
@ALV91711: I think I'm going to hire a baker to do an entire dessert package, including a normal cake for adults and a sugar -free or something healthier for K's smash cake.
@Adira: That is so cute! You're getting a lot of great stuff for your theme!
@Purpledaisy: Super cute theme/invite!

It's official- we should be moved into our new house in time for LO's first birthday! I ordered invitations today for a party on April 5th. It's going to be two weeks after his real birthday because that's when all grandparents can make it and we hope to feel slightly more settled in the house (moving mid-March).
So excited!
I am going to do a trial run of this for a smash cake tonight:
http://www.oheverythinghandmade.com/recipe-healthy-babys-first-cake/
I'm a terrible cook so this might be a complete bust. We'll see!
And here are the invitations I found off etsy. They weren't the ones I originally hoped for, which were from minted.com, but these were 1/3 the price!

@blackbird: It never even occured to me to rent a helium tank! That's a great idea! How many balloons are you going to have?
@Adira: You should make your mini cheesecakes! I've been dreaming of those things since the fall!!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@QueensBee: YAY!!!! Congratulations on the house!!! So awesome you'll be able to throw Pete's birthday party in your new home! And I love the invites! So adorable! Let us know how that cake turns out!!
So I decided that I want to decorate Xander's cake better than I did before, but the store-bought frosting really isn't great for decorating, so I found a recipe for buttercream frosting and just substituted dairy-free butter and hemp milk for butter and milk respectively. It turned out pretty good, so I think I might do that for his actual cake!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@QueensBee: haha, I thought about it, but they're a TON of work and I figure I already have so much to do, so I'm having someone make cupcakes for me instead of me trying to make those!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@QueensBee: So happy for y'all on the house!! I think those invitations are cute. The squiggly eyes are great.
@Adira: yeah you can't pipe store bought frosting. And it is harder to get it smooth.
I bought some stuff at Party City on Thursday. They had a package of star balloons and it includes the helium. So I think instead of spending $35 on a helium tank, we decided to just buy balloons from Party City since we aren't going to do that many. Will be cheaper and we don't have to store the tank since we won't need it anytime soon. Excited to break out my Cricut this week!!!!!!

Ok I decided to just attempt to make an invitation on Microsoft Publisher and this is what I came up with (spun off the Minted invite and the etsy ones you guys sent me). Thoughts?
cantaloupe / 6164 posts
@QueensBee: Yay! Great news! I love the invite. I am slightly obsessed with dinosaurs, so I can't wait to see what you come up with.
@Smurfette: I have been cricuting like crazy. I actually completely overdid it on my mat, and had to go buy a new one today! I'm trying to do favor tags, a banner, some little pick things for the centerpieces... I might've been a little overzealous with the ideas.
@Arden: It looks cute! If for whatever reason you need any help with it, I have photoshop, and I'm happy to help.
We did a ton of party shopping today. I think we have everything we need now. NOW, I just have a bunch of DIY to do this week. I should be working on tassels now, but I can't make myself.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Arden: it is cute! But the font for one-durful life is bugging me. Maybe try it thicker? Cute pic of V!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@photojane: I am sure I will wear mine out. Lots of stars! What are the tassels for?
persimmon / 1223 posts
@photojane: I'm making a tassel garland too! I made a bunch last night and strung then up and I really like how they look!
@QueensBee: congrats on the house!
I also decided I'm going to hang a clothesline of the outfits he wore in his monthly photos to show how much he's grown which spurred me to go through all his outgrown clothes... Oh my gosh I pulled out the preemie sized onesies and I just about died!
bananas / 9973 posts
@QueensBee: CONGRATS on the house!
Y'all are so on top of the party-planning. *hangs head in shame*
I'm sure I'll start feeling the panic soon. lol
How are you guys doing with RSVPs? So far, we only have one "No" and that's from the other baby with the same day bday party. I'm actually scared if everyone we invited does come! It will be a lot more people than I expected! Even when I tell our friends, "I totally understand if you don't want to come to a kiddie party." they all laugh and say of course they're coming.
I need to nail down the food and rentals now!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@photojane: I thought about doing that to hang from the fireplace but I made them before and I didn't like my final project. I think I did them too thick.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@dojo: that is a cute idea!
@shopaholic: I have mine asking for regrets only. I know one family won't be able to make it but now we just added two more people. I think most will all be here. How many are you inviting?? I haven't mailed our invites out yet.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Arden: Very cute!!
@dojo: That clothesline is such a cute idea!!! I kind of wish that I had put Xander in different outfits so that I could do something like that!
@shopaholic: I've only heard back from half the people I invited. Still waiting on 14 more responses (including my BFF, WTF)! But my RSVP by date is Feb. 23rd, so I'm trying to get impatient, haha.
persimmon / 1223 posts
@shopaholic: We have only gotten a couple RSVPs but I kind of figure people are bad about that so I'm just going to assume that well have most family come and I can sort of guess which friends will make it.
@Adira: You could still do it! I am adding some extra ones in too so it's not strictly what he wore anyways.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@dojo: I thought about doing one of his (my) favorite outfits throughout his first year, but then I wasn't really sure where I'd even hang it. Where are you hanging yours?
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Adira: Do it over the fireplace? Over the couch? Behind the food table?
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: Behind the food table is a good idea! I'll have to think about this some more...
persimmon / 1223 posts
@Adira: I was thinking to hang either over the fireplace or on the wall behind a drinks table.
cantaloupe / 6164 posts
@dojo: I love that idea! Can't wait to see pictures. All of Sadie's little clothes are packed away... I'd probably sob if I took them out now. haha
@shopaholic: don't feel bad! Sadie's party is this Saturday & I have so much to do. I haven't even planned a menu yet. We didn't have many actual RSVPs, so I'm just assuming all of the family is coming. I texted my friends and asked, since they're bringing the kids & I needed to know how many favors to buy. Our party is going to be pretty small, but I think I prefer that... less stress for me!
@Smurfette: I'm the opposite... I tried a couple of half sheet ones and they looked so flimsy and weird. I'm making fuller ones now & I like them much better. What do you have planned for the cut-out stars?
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Adira: I would get some Twine and clothespins. You can find both at Michael's. Or I have a ton of twine I can mail you a long strand.
@photojane: I am going to hang streamers to cover the whole wall behind the food table. Then going to stick glitter stars randomly. Then will make some to decorate around the high chair. Cake topper (R's) and cupcakes ( if I do those for guests instead of a cake). Then I am going to make her birthday banner. Think big stars and then letters inside the stars. Also going to tape stars to clothespins to display her monthly pics. I just realized I am going to need more glitter paper!!
So Target has a helium tank for $21.99 so I went ahead and bought it.
pear / 1718 posts
@Arden: Holy smokes! I'm so impressed you designed that invitation on your own! The photo is beautiful and I love the look of the the whole thing. I think it looks great as is, but also agree with @smurfette that the top font looks ever so slightly off when I really analyze it.
@dojo: I absolutely love the idea of hanging different clothes from throughout the year! So clever!
I never knew tassel garland existed but now I am thinking I may try to make a strand...
The trial smash cake was a bit of a disappointment. My husband wasn't trying to be mean but he actually had to spit out his first bite. He apologized and said, "I'm sorry it just wasn't what I expected!" He thought the icing (cream cheese mixed with apple sauce and vanilla extract) was way too sour and the flavor surprised him (he was expecting a sugary delicious icing). I gave a tiny bite to Pete to see if he liked it and he ate the cake but not the icing. So, maybe I will keep the cake recipe but look for a slightly more traditional icing recipe. Betty Crocker suggests mixing cream cheese with vanilla yoplait yogurt. We'll see!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@QueensBee: Aww I am sorry it didn't turn out! Are you trying to find a more healthy icing?
This makes me realize I need to do one next weekend so I have time to tweak it if I need too. I am going to make and freeze anyway. Then just make the icing the morning off.
pear / 1718 posts
@Smurfette: Yes, I was hoping I could find a sugar-free recipe. I'm not anti-sugar (we gave LO blueberry pancakes with some syrup this morning!), but I do like to stick to natural sugars. Maybe I should compromise and use the healthy sugar-free cake recipe but put on legit buttercream icing?
honeydew / 7589 posts
@QueensBee: My mom used to mix maple syrup with cream cheese for icing. Not super healthy but better than white sugar.
persimmon / 1223 posts
@QueensBee: aww sorry the icing wasn't a hit. Sounds like the cake was good though
@Adira: I think I'm just going use some mini clothespins I had from an earlier project and some twine. Hopefully it will hold. I was thinking to maybe use a couple of those 3m wall hooks to attach the string to.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@QueensBee: Well I think they only have one 1st bday! R hasn't had any sugar, except for a Gerber cookie, so I am looking as it as a treat for her. Then when we will go back to no sugar, except special occasions.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: Oh, I think I have twine actually, I'll have to check! Thanks! And that star banner sounds awesome!!! I can't wait to see the pictures of the party!
@QueensBee: Eeek, bummer your husband spit out his first bite! But at least Pete seemed to like it okay! Hopefully you can find a healthy-ish recipe for icing that tastes good!
@dojo: Okay, thanks! I was wondering if 3M hooks would work, but was curious what you were planning on doing! I think I'll give that a try too.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@Queensbee, Um, i have no idea, but i have a couple of big bags of balloons! I figure white and pink will *always* be used! And it was cheaper to buy a bag of 72 turquoise balloons than 2 bags of 10 balloons. Go figure.
I had read to use apple juice concentrate and cream cheese for frosting. I told DH too bad we can't make her peanut butter frosting. She looooves that. She's not a fan of cream cheese, though. I think i'll just dollop some yogurt on top. Whatevz

@dojo: I'm planning on doing the clothesline thing, too. I saw it on pinterest, and I knew I had to do it, mostly because I can't make myself put away a couple of their preemie outfits. They're just so tiny and cute!
I did a practice run in making the rainbow cake and tried out a new recipe for it: I think the inside turned out pretty well. I have to figure out what to do with the icing though.
