@Smurfette: I will ask the pharmacist about the flavoring when I call in for her refill - which should be soon! Have you tried it? Is it safe for their age?
I can't swaddle K before she eats, because even though she has gotten A LOT better letting us swaddle her (yay for that!), she still hates to be swaddled when she is awake. And feeding her while swaddled is a huge PITA for us! She squirms and wants to fight the swaddle and ends up just tossing her head side to side in frustration, not latching, not drinking, and dripping all over. So even in our MOTN feedings if she is swaddled, I usually un-swaddle her to eat.
CTS is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or also Cubital Tunnel Syndrome (I have both, plus Tendonitis) in my wrists and elbows. They are old work injuries and just vary depending on my usage of them, but obviously with the baby, my wrists and elbows are working OT these days!
@Mrs. Blue: Nice to hear from you! Man, I can't imagine having to try and time medicine for 2 babies! We do use a little syringe thing the pharmacy gave us, and a teeny tiny milk bottle (what they gave us at the hospital). I will have to try the sleeping trick today!
@Adira: Thanks! She's not usually fussy the entire time period, but it's just a range and she will go from fine and happy to suddenly looking like she is in pain and so sad. That's why DH attributes it to growing pains.
@NaturallyCathy: That's so funny about the bottles and your need for 2 different kinds so your DS won't get confused! Makes total sense! The coo'ing is so cute! Err sounds must be extra funny! Our feeding is still very varied as well. I just try to go with the flow and feed on demand.
Last Night's Report:
- Sleeping in the crib was a success! At least, I'm calling it that! She slept in the crib for about 5 hours before waking to eat. I fed her in the nursery glider chair and fell asleep while burping her and keeping her upright. By the time I woke up, almost 2 hours had passed! But I put her back in the crib, where she slept another 2 hours and 45 min. I didn't get a lot of sleep during that time, mostly checking the monitor because Miss K was a NOISY sleeper, grunting and letting out little cries most of the time. Sometimes she would open her eyes and stare right at the camera! I'd watch her kind of fuss around (swaddled) and fall back asleep within a few minutes. Another 2 1/2 hours later, she woke up. I brought her to the room to nurse (easier for me) and let her sleep on her side, unswaddled, next to me. WE got another 2 1/2 hours that way!
All in all, K slept in her room for ~ 8 hours (albeit, 2 of them were ON me!) I think DH definitely slept better last night for it!
Will see if I can keep it up, though I found I don't actually like to nurse in the glider as much as in my own bed!
We are meeting another mom and baby I met last week for lunch today! My first mommy & baby date! lol! Will let you gals know how it goes!

@NaturallyCathy: I was wondering if size 1 were getting too tight on R's chunky thighs but I think size 2 would be so big on her everywhere else. How big is E? Too funny H is trying to "take back" his bottles. Don't you love the babbles?!
@shopaholic: I didn't think about flavoring it this time. I will probably ask for her refill so now sure if it is safe for this age yet. Does K still spit up a lot? That is so great that you got K to sleep in the crib!! I was going to this week but we are going to be out of town this weekend and just taking the RnP for her to sleep in. Then next week DH is gone for work so probably will be that weekend. But part of the reason I don't want to is because I like nursing in bed too. Like tonight, after getting up at 330 to eat, it is 5 and I think she finally is back to sleep. That is a long time to be in the glider, when my bed and covers are much more comfy. Although I can always go to the guest room I guess, it is next door.
So I took R to Target today, she started to call asleep in the car on the way home, so I decided to go to another Target, since the first one didn't have something. On the way home, she woke up and started crying/screaming. Of course it is 1 so the streets are packed with lunch traffic. I almost pulled over cause I thought she might choke on herself she was screaming so hard but then we started moving again and she fell back asleep. That was the first time she has ever done that. Progress!!
She was really fussy tonight. I just hate seeing her spit up so much. She doesn't seem in pain but it is just so much the last couple days. DH had to remind me the ped. said that it would get worse before it gets better. I guess I just need to put her in a bib. Easier to change then her clothes.

Just had to pop in and say the boys slept from after their 9:00 (which to be fair, last roughly until 11 because they kept deciding they needed more) feeding until 2:30!! That is HUGE for us. They have still been eating every 2-3 hours at night, and then in the last two days, they magically started stretching it out to 3 1/2, 4, and now 5 1/2 hours! I think it's probably because they are getting bigger (8 & 9 lbs) and they've recently started cluster feeding in the evening. I know it won't happen every night, but jut knowing their is hope....man, that is a fantastic feeling!!

@Smurfette: our boys aren't huge fans of hanging out in the car seats, but they mostly tolerate it if we are moving. At stoplights, I always release the brake for a second and the push it again and repeat over and over to keep a little bit of motion, even though we are stopped. I know everyone around me must wander what the heck I'm doing!
@shopaholic: Congrats on getting her to sleep in the crib! That's fantastic.

@Smurfette: I'll be able to tell you later how big Em is but I know that with Henry, I had diapers on him where the tabs met in the mide because of his skinny waist but were snug/comfortable everywhere else. I'm jusging Em's readiness based on the fact that the tabs are splayed so far apart and her chunky thighs look like they might be uncomfortable. I see it this way - we already bought the size 2 diapers. If I try them out and they start having blowouts for being too loose, we get another pack of size 1s to tide us over for a week. She'll get to size 2s eventually.

Henry (15 months old) is a little over 24 pounds and is 33 inches long; Emma (2 months old) is 12 pounds and 3 ounces, 23 3/4 inches long.

@Mrs. Blue: Good job boys!! I hope they keep it up. We got two nights of 5 hours, and then last night was 4 hours, but still better then 2 or 3. I can't wait for longer stretches. The more she feeds at night, the longer she sleeps. So I don't mind the nursing/sucking for an hour if I can get sleep. And I have done that trick with the brakes too. Can you believe our babies are almost 7 weeks already?
@NaturallyCathy: Yeah the tabs are still touching each other, so I am keeping R in 1's for a little bit longer. She doesn't seem bothered by the thighs so I guess they aren't too tight. Yeah, Emma is gaining weight like a champ!

@Smurfette: Yup. Being about sixty perfent formula fed will do that but both my kids are healthily chubby. Gotta love the chub cheeks! She's almost twice her birth weight (give a few ounces) and grewn quite a bit. I just hope that the nurse friend who came over and weighed and measured them both is wrong on one thing - she took a look at Em's tongue and said she might have thrush.

@shopaholic: Over 7 hours is amazing! I can't wait to have that. My guy pushes with his legs quite a bit. I can't believe someone so little does that. What a cutie and I love that giraffe lamp. That is so awesome that she slept in her crib.
@NaturallyCathy: I've had to start putting away closes that Isaac is outgrowing and it makes me a little sad each time. I mean I am happy he is getting bigger, but I miss the smaller baby that we brought home.
@Mrs. Blue: That is awesome that you are getting longer stretches at night. It is nice to actually get some sleep.
Yesterday evening was a bit rough, Isaac was eating and eating and eating. I didn't think he would stop. Then he was just so cranky from being overtired, he was up for 5 hours straight! Passed him over to his dad and he passed right out. But he did a four hour stretch and then consistent 2.5 hour stretches throughout the night. I felt more rested when I got up today.
Now my boys are snoozing on the couch. I love seeing those two together.
Tomorrow is the day DH leaves to work out of town. It could be an interesting week. My sister is going to come out later this month for a couple weeks to help out and I'm looking forward to that.
Went for my 6 week check up yesterday and everything went good. I'm allowed to exercise again and be intimate with hubby. I was very nervous about that, but we gave it a shot last night and it went good.
Guess I should go get a nap in while everyone else is.

@shopaholic: That's awesome you got K to sleep in her crib!!! We STILL haven't transitioned Xander to his, but we're getting ready! I just bought a new changing pad so that we can have one in his room upstairs and keep the one we have downstairs, just for convenience. Hopefully the transition is smooth... How did last night go?
@Smurfette: Glad to hear that R was able to calm down in the car and fall asleep again! That sounds like progress!! And Xander still spits up a lot too - at least one big spit up every day, and often two, with smaller spit ups in between. A bib is a good idea, except Xander usually waits until he's on his activity mat and then spits up! It ends up getting all over the back of his shirt and in his hair and over one ear! It's so gross, haha, but a bib won't help, haha.
@Mrs. Blue: Congrats on the 5.5 hour stretch!!! That's awesome!!! Xander's done that a couple times, but still doesn't do it consistently, and he's 12 lbs!! I can't wait for him to do longer stretches at night! Do your babes always eat at the same time? What do you do if one of them wakes up hungry before the other?
@Smurfette: R sounds like she's on the same schedule at Xander. Xander had two nights in a row sleeping for 5 hours, and then last night he only slept for 4, which was such a disappointment. And I feel like I fed him the same all three days, so I have no idea what the difference is. Oh well.

@Adira: If one wakes up, we wake the other one up to eat, too. Otherwise we would just be feeding babies 100% of the time.

@Smurfette: I found out our liquid Zantac is a very strong mint flavor. They told me that's prob why she hates it and there was no way around it - any flavoring would be like grape-mint, cherry-mint, etc. I have to try and see if the compounding pharmacy can make a non-flavored liquid from the tablet form.
That is GREAT on your car progress with R! I swear the little progress like that really can build confidence to do more, and in turn I think gets them used to the experiences! Way to go for both you and R! I hear you on the bib! We were using them a ton a couple weeks ago, and the other night, she kept spitting up so much, both she and I eventually just ended up topless until bath-time because we'd each gone through a few changes! Good luck with DH gone next week! Are you going to have any help while he is gone?
@Mrs. Blue: That is AWESOME! Way to go boys! I think 5 hours is that magical number! You are seriously doing so incredible - managing 2 at once at this age! I hope they keep it up and keep going longer!
@NaturallyCathy: Oh I hope you don't have thrush too! I still am battling it, I think. Ped isn't 100% sure about it and told us just to keep doing what we're doing. So confusing really.
@ALV91711: Thanks! We didn't get that again last night, but still a decent stretch. Oh good luck to you too with DH being gone and baby alone! Wow! You are on the ball with DTD right after clearance! I think I must have the only DH who hasn't even asked, even though I've brought it up. Though he's been staying up with K till the first feeding each night, so he's been really tired.

So last night we didn't get K into the crib. She was really fussy and fell asleep within an hour of her bath (about 10:30 or 11, I think) and I was expecting to feed her around midnight but she was conked out! I woke up around 3 am and she was STILL asleep in the swing and DH was passed out on the sofa. I was engorged, so waited about another half hour watching her until she started waking and fussing. We had about 5 1/2 hours in that stretch. But I nursed her in my bed, so just put her back down in the bassinet in our room.
She was REALLY fussy last night and tonight around 6:30pm & 10 pm. I *think* she is starting to shift her own sleep schedule and is cueing to sleep earlier/longer. I hope if this pattern continues, it gives up more of a predictable sleep schedule: cluster-feed, bath, massage, and sleep! I was told today that cluster-feeding before bed is great because it just means longer sleep stretches. And also that once the babies reach about 10lbs, they can sleep a lot longer!
DH got her to sleep by 10:30ish tonight and she is in her crib! We've got the Angel Care monitor on tonight, but that's also tricky, because we're not very good with it yet and DH says it beeps loudly when he picks her up. Obviously, we should read the manual, eh?
Oh! I forgot to mention last weekend - Kaitlyn is now able to grip and hold onto the rings on one of her hanging toys! That hand coordination seems to continually get better this week and I am calling it official that she can find her fist to self-soothe today! She's been able to get her fist or fingers in her mouth all day, whereas before was a total hit/miss and she couldn't seem to keep them there. She fell asleep for catnaps 3 times today sucking on her fist. No coincidence I think that tonight was a lot better than the previous 2 nights. Maybe fist-sucking isn't a great thing, but we are okay with it! Seems to calm her down a lot better than a pacifier. She has also started laughing out loud! Literally - her laughs are complete with sounds now.
OK, I'm going to try and catch some sleep before her next feeding!

@shopaholic: I have heard the same thing about cluster feeding and the 10 lbs. mark.

@shopaholic: Yeah, I can smell the mint on ours. I noticed today that our bottle is getting low since one time I was holding her and trying to fill the dropper with the other, I spilt a good bit. The bottle says most insurance will refill on 5-11. I hope they let us do it tomorrow. Or we will have to pay for it ourselves
That is great that you got K in her crib again! Good news she can self soothe too. R will sometimes suck on her hand, but not always. I know if she would just do it more or take a pacifier she would love it and soothe herself. We aren't laughing yet but I love hearing her "talk" to us. So cute!! We aren't grabbing anything yet either. She never seems interested in toys unless laying on her activity may, then she just looks at them.
I have heard the same about cluster feeding and 10lbs mark. Seems to be the case for us as well.
We had a good day today. She didn't fight on going down for naps. Wasn't as fussy this evening. She took 2ozs of formula in a bottle since I didn't have a chance to pump today. I have to get better about it. I just want to get stuff done around the house when she is napping and I can put her down, especially since it is like 20 mins. She didn't go down to bed really easy tonight but she slept 5 1-2 hours. I just finished nursing her and waiting to put her back down.
We are going to visit the ILs this weekend for DHs nephews bday and SIL graduation party. I personally don't think R is ready for a 4 hour car ride, well I am going to take us 5-6 hours. But DH wants to try it. I told him the only way is if he takes FridY off work and we leave in the morning since R is much happier in the mornings. I need to pack tomorrow. I know I am going to way
over pack for her!
I would much rather be home this weekend since DH will be gone next week for work. My sister happens to be taking vacation next week and just staying home, so she is coming over one day to keep me company and give me a break. Then I think my Mom might come one night after work so I can get a break too. Nervous about it!!
Anyone else gone on a trip? Any tips?
pomelo / 5621 posts
@shopaholic: I think the only reason we DTD right away was because DH was leaving this morning for a week. I find the nights Isaac cluster feeds he usually has a bit longer of a sleep.
@Smurfette: 5.5 hours is great! I hope the drive goes well. That is a long time to be in the car. We have a 15 hour drive coming up at the end of the month, but we are going to split it into three days.
Last night we had a stretch of just over 5 hours between feedings. It was nice. He didn't go to sleep right away, so was only asleep for about 4 hours, but I'll take what I can get. I hope this wasn't just a one time thing. In the last two nights he's done his last feeding at about 8, taken about 45min-1hour to go to sleep and then stays asleep till 12 or 1am.
Today is our first day on our own and so far so good. He can totally tell that something is off though. At least we have an aunt right near by to help out and I have a friend coming for a visit tomorrow. And it is only one week.
My sister is coming in the middle of the month to stay for a couple weeks to help out while DH is away for work again. Then we are going to go stay with my mom for most of the summer as DH has a lot of out of town work. We will see DH about three times while we are there, he will come and visit us.

@Smurfette: We did the drive to mammoth a couple of weeks ago and K did surprisingly well on the road trip! Even though it was in the middle of the day and I was sure she'd be away, she slept the whole drive there with only one stop to eat and change diaper. That's just understood ours. Coming home we need three different stops because she was a little fussier, She slept all morning before we left I think that's why. Still it was way better than expected! And I totally over packed for her that weekend, but at least we drove so there's no baggage fees!

@ALV91711: Good luck today and this week! Five hours between feeding definitely is such a great accomplishment! Even if he didn't sleep the whole time something about it just feels different! Hey what about five and half hours for her longest stretch last night. I felt like I could get so much accomplished, I did laundry and actually ironed a couple of things!
Was able to get her back into the crib pretty easily after both feedings. Feeling like I can actually get some stuff done today, I'm just praying that this trend continues!

@Smurfette: Wow, congrats on R sleeping the 5.5 hour stretch! That's awesome!! Our babies are finally starting to sleep longer!
So last night was pretty awesome for us! Xander slept almost SIX hours, which was AWESOME. And then he slept four more hours so his 3:30 a.m. wakeup was the ONLY wakeup during the night! I got so much sleep!!! AND he didn't cluster feed before bed either! I'm hoping it happens again, haha!

Hi Ladies,
So, I think we have hit the 6 week growth spurt over here. Pete has had a rather fussy week of cluster feeding all morning and evening, and he is sleeping for shorter stretches (gahhh!)! Last night, he fell asleep around 9:30pm and slept until 2am. This is still good, I know, except that I only got to bed around 11pm, so it wasn’t too long of a stretch for me. Then, he only slept from 2:30am to 4:30am and was awake to start the day. I could not get the kid to go back to sleep for hours. Finally, around 7am we both fell asleep in bed for one more hour. It’s not my intention to co-sleep but it’s the only strategy that would work.
He’s also particularly grumpy in the evenings. I know that this is pretty common among babies, but it drives me nuts. Poor DH comes home to a miserable baby each night- I feel so badly for him! It also makes cooking and eating dinner nearly impossible since Pete will scream if I put him down at all. I have learned to eat with my right hand while I nurse at the table, holding him on my left boob. Multitasking at it’s finest! Certainly not an ideal way to eat, though. Also, I was hoping to use this time of day to get to the gym now that I am cleared for exercise. Definitely hasn’t happened yet! I know a few of you have mentioned that your babes become little monsters in the twilight hours as well. Any tips or strategies that have worked?
The positive side of all this is that he has started smiling for real! Eeep! Totally makes it all worth it! I have become a little obsessed with trying to get him to smile every moment of every day.
It's been beautiful in NYC so I have been determined to get out and enjoy the weather. Yesterday, I put him in the Ergo and we walked about 2 miles to a museum called PS1, which is a branch of the MOMA. Pete's first museum! I'm not sure he was too interested in the art but he seemed to enjoy his time in the Ergo. I got a blister on my foot during the walk there, so we hopped on the subway to get back to our house. That was Pete's first trip on NYC public transportation... so far, he hasn't contracted any terrible diseases, so I think it went well!
We are heading to our first baby playdate today. I am meeting another new mom for lunch (perhaps a picnic in the park if it's warm enough) and she is bringing along her 7 week old son. I’m debating where to use the Ergo on the subway again, or to drive the car into Manhattan, where I will have to deal with parking…
The new moms group that was supposed to meet last Monday was actually canceled. The moderator had a bad cold and didn't want to expose a room full of new moms and infants to her germs. Rescheduled for next Monday…
@adira: holy crap- that's like 10 hours of sleep with only feed! That's amazing!! What time do you put him to sleep?
@shopaholic: I am totally going to follow you on instagram! My user name is magsies23. I only started getting into it a few weeks ago and now I am obsessed.
@alvie91711: How was your first day and night flying solo?
@naturallycathy: I saw your gold post showing off your gorgeous family yesterday! Too cute! I know you’ve talked about how young Henry is on this thread but it didn’t really sink in until I saw his photo. Wow, you really do have two little babies to care for! Hopefully they will become great pals and entertain each other before you know it!
@smurfette: How goes the car ride? I’m thinking of you this morning; hope R sleeps and you guys have a fun road trip! Definitely let us know what it was like to spend the weekend away. Where are you having her sleep? We have a weekend getaway to Vermont in 3 weeks and I’m not sure what we are going to do without our usual gear (swing, baby bath, bassinet, etc.)

@QueensBee: no advice on the night fussiness other then whatever you find works do it. I know what you mean, I feel bad that the only time DH gets with her is when she is fussy and crying. Which he doesn't handle well.
R was up like three times last night to eat, longest stretch we got was three hours.
An hour and half into the car ride, and huge melt down. I know she is just tired since she slept for 20 mins. And has been up for four hours. Feeding her hoping it is going to calm her down. This is going to be a long day. And night since DH is going with his Dad to his sisters graduation and the StepMIL thinks she should stay home with me. Not looking forward to trying to make conversation with her for 5 or 6 hours and dealing with R fussiness. Would rather be home alone. I am so tired and not happy about this weekend at all. Sorry for complaining!

@ALV91711: I got the frame at Babies R Us. It came with the paper and ink pad to do the prints.
@QueensBee: Gahh!!! Don't you hate it when they wake up ready to start the day waaaaay before you are?? Is it possible he slept too much during the day before and that's why he was up so early? Of course, some babies are just crazy!
I usually put Xander to sleep after his last feed, which is between 8:00 and 9:00. So he's in bed between 9:00 and 10:00. Last night he also slept almost six hours before his first feed (at 3:30), but I could only get him to eat from one side and he passed out, so he ended up waking up two hours later to eat - so annoying! Though I guess I shouldn't complain about only two feedings during the night. And at least the first stretch was a long one.
@QueensBee: @aprk: Thank you! I'm so happy with how it turned out!
@Smurfette: The frame (Babies R Us) came with the ink pad and paper to do the prints. The cool thing about it was that the ink pad doesn't actually get ink on your baby. You put the pad against the paper and then press his hands/feet against the other side of the ink pad. The prints actually didn't come out looking as good as they do in that picture - there were extra smudges and extra toes, haha. I ended up taking a picture of the prints and then editing out all the smudges and extra toes!
Sorry to hear you're having a crappy weekend. Everything seems worse with a fussy baby! I hope she settles down for you and you're able to enjoy some of the weekend!

Morning, all!
Pete is currently snoozing the early morning away in his swing so I have had time to drink coffee, make and eat an omelet, and catch up on the thread today. A great Sunday morning!
Yesterday was a busy day. I had my first real workout in months at the gym. I lifted some weights and ran 4 miles. Then I steamed and had a coconut, kale, and pineapple smoothie. It felt so amazing! I left the gym sweaty and flushed, and I felt so healthy again. Ahhhh, bliss! Hoping to squeeze another one in today because it’s nearly impossible to go on days when DH works.
Then, we drove to the suburbs to look at two more houses in our dream town. No dice. One house was on a very busy and noisy intersection and the second had zero yard. There was a small garden patch and a deck, but then there was a short wall with a 40 foot drop to the next yard over. Eeek, parenting nightmare!
And finally, we went to my cousin’s son’s 3rd birthday party. It was hilarious! There was a silly puppet show, a disco ball, and a guy in a cow outfit who unfortunately scared all the kids. We did the hokey pokey and the chicken dance. It was just so fun watching all the kids run around and dance!
Even though it was a packed afternoon/evening, Pete did really well. I think he was so exhausted from eating and growing all week, and he pretty much snoozed the entire time. He woke up once to feed during the party and smiled while looking at the lights and listening to the kids’ music, but after a few songs, he was asleep again. He was even pleasant from 7-9pm, which is when he has his daily meltdowns!
@alv91711: Yes, the 6 week growth spurt has been a doozy! I didn’t even notice the other ones, but my nipples are red and chapped from all the eating through this one. I *think* we are through the worst of it though, because Pete slept all afternoon yesterday and then had a really good night of sleeping , only feeding at regular intervals. I feel like he should be strong enough to do cartwheels after all the milk he consumed in the past week!
I’m glad Isaac has started to enjoy his swing more. I hope that continues to relax him and help him nap during this ridiculous growth spurt.
@shopaholic: I love being IG friends! I look forward to seeing what adorable outfit K is wearing each day, lol!
And yay for her reflux starting to subside! That’s such great news. Her little tummy must be maturing!
@smurfette: I’m glad the car trip went better than expected. And I totally understand what you mean about it being more work to make conversation with a relative/in-law for hours while watching a baby. It can be so exhausting trying to stay personable and “on” while also caring for an infant. These are moment when I love breastfeeding. If I ever need a break from guests, I say, “Oh it’s time to nurse!” and then I hide in a bedroom with Pete for as long as possible! My husband totally knows that I am sneaking off too and usually gives me a look that pleads, “take me with you!”

Hi all!
I wanted to sleep in but I ended up waking up at 6AM (ugh) so I thought I'd come over and write a quick update.
We're doing well here. Vi slept 8 hours straight Friday night, and she is consistently sleeping 5-6 hour stretches. She's been very hungry, wanting both breasts at every feeding and cluster feeding in the evening (perhaps this is a 6 week growth spurt? She'll be six weeks old on Tuesday).
I'm not sure how much she weighs, but at three weeks she weighed 10.4 so she's probably around 11 now?
We went to a reunion our birth center put on yesterday, which was fun. I hope we get to go next year before we move.
I'm still bleeding, although it's light. How long did you guys have bleeding? I'm ready for it to be over.
