@SleepyMonkey: what has helped us with bedtime fussiness is that I drive home from daycare around 5:30 and he falls asleep in the car. Then I wake him up around 6/6:30 so he's awake for like an hour before bed. That little catnap really helps him get through to bedtime without losing it. I have no idea how to get him to take a nap without the car though but just wanted to share that a mini nap helps us!

@SleepyMonkey: That's what I'm hoping. I actually think our daycare lady is going to whip us all into shape with her scheduling abilities, haha. I'm kind of looking forward to it even though I know it's going to be super tough at first.

@mfa_lady: I've only ever feed on demand and since she sleeps All the time she goes long stretches regularly. I am not on any schedule and i have no idea how many feeds i do a day or anything.
@SleepyMonkey: we have an occasional witching hour depending on the day. If i can get her to sleep through it and have a later bedtime we are golden. I think we just started the second leap though, because all day she has been extra fussy.

@mfa_lady: Haha, yeah, at least he is certainly healthy. On one hand, it's nice to hand off a few feedings to DH - H was only 7 lbs 14 oz at birth - which is not small, but not in the 90th percentile like now - so packing on that much weight while being EBF means I have been nursing, um, a lot. He is (was?) a boob monster. But I really like nursing, and it hasn't worked out with either of my LOs because of allergies. It's just frustrating.
I don't know if it's because I have a toddler too, but it seems like Henry sleeps SO much. When I read that max awake time should be 1-1.5 hours that sounds right, like what he does, but I'm so used to parenting J for 5-6 hour stretches that when H falls back asleep at 8 AM after getting up at 7 I'm like, ummm, are you sick?!
pomegranate / 3921 posts
@Radish: Good to know I don't need to be scared of the long stretches! We've tried to do a bit of a routine over the last few weeks for the sanity of our sitter starting next week.

@keepcalmcarrie: E was 7 pounds 13 ounces at birth--and she was 11 lb 1 oz at her 2 month appt! Haha. You've got a growing boy on your hands for sure!
pomegranate / 3921 posts
So, I posted a separate thread about this, but E started crying this morning and when I went in to her nursery, she was ON HER BELLY in the Woombie. As in, face down on her mattress. Ugh!! I know she's crazy strong and flaps around like a maniac at night, but my goodness. There's no way she's doing to be able to sleep without a swaddle.
Do you think we could do one of the more free, arms up swaddles, like the Zipadeezip or the "Love to Dream"? I'm freaking out over here and feeling like we're never going to sleep again.
nectarine / 2242 posts
@mfa_lady: OMG I can't believe she already rolled in her crib, that's crazy! No advice really but I have heard Merlin's Sleep Suit prevents them from rolling because it sort of weighs them down, we have one but haven't tried it yet.
grapefruit / 4006 posts
@keepcalmcarrie: so sorry about the MSPI! but clearly, he is a big guy so he is healthy and that is awesome. but i can understand how it is frustrating that the nursing isn't working as you had hoped! J fights sleep too on some nights. i don't get it. some nights she will put herself to sleep, other nights, she will wake up as soon as we put her down. argh! why can't babies just do the same thing every day?!
@HappyBaker: maybe i should try wearing her and get her to catnap beforehand...good idea.
@mfa_lady: yep, i am not as worried about getting her to nap on her own and getting her on a strict schedule because when i go back to work, the nanny is just going to do her thing and break any habits that i created....and i can't believe she rolled already! that is crazy. no advice because neither of my kids liked to be swaddled, but i have read a lot of good things about the merlin sleep suit too.
@Radish: how are your girls feeling today?
persimmon / 1313 posts
I am also in the nighttime fussiness club! A can either fall asleep easily or have a night where she refuses to sleep. She still naps very long in the afternoon, like 2-4 hours. Is this normal? I'm not concerned because it doesn't affect her bedtime but I'm just wondering if I should wake her up or something.
grapefruit / 4006 posts
@namaste: i think long naps are normal. we usually have a long nap in the afternoon (except for today) of 3 hours.
ugh. tonight was another miss...we put her down at 7:30, wide awake. i let her cry for 10 mins, she fell asleep. woke up at 8:45 and she has been awake ever since, just hanging out in her bassinet. not crying. it was like that was a little nap...so confusing. JUST GO TO SLEEP.
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
@namaste: We have a pretty solid afternoon nap too.
@mfa_lady: Dang!! C weaned herself from the love to dream Swaddle. They can move but they're still snug so I don't know if I would feel comfortable if she flipped over but in theory she could still wrestle her head to the side I would think..
Also, C nurses every 2h on the dot. Yep. Haha.
@Radish: omg just saw this! How are they?
nectarine / 2079 posts
@SleepyMonkey: @sorrycharlie: i think they are recovering. B's been extra fussy but I am thinking it's because she's staying awake a little longer and then getting over tired / maybe a wonder week thing. I'm hoping it's not something like an ear infecting like A got - I do not want to go back to the doctor. Still lots of snot for both, though
pineapple / 12793 posts
@Radish: glad they're getting better! C had her first cold this week too. It's so hard to see them feeling poorly.
@namaste: let her sleep! C takes a three hour nap in the morning and then another three hour nap in the afternoon. I feel like I hardly get to see her!
12 week growth spurt in our house. Ugh. I got spoiled by weeks of amazing sleep. Instead of doing 8 then 2 she's doing 3,4,1,1,1... naturally I only catch the back half of the four and then three very broken hours. Prayers that writing about it here ends it!
persimmon / 1481 posts
@namaste: I feel like when K takes super long naps like that she goes to bed way easier. Definitely let her sleep!
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
@Radish: Ugh poor things! Boogie wipes helped immensely with double colds here last week.
@oliviaoblivia: That's normal sleep here so I feel your pain! We co bed so I was like at least I don't have to move to feed her but she alwaaaays poops right after she falls asleep after nursing. So then I have to get up and wake her up. Gah.
grapefruit / 4006 posts
@Radish: j had a cold last week and had a ton of snot, the nose frieda was awesome. She hated it but it really helped her breathe when she had to nurse. The snot unfortunately backed up into her eyes thru her tear ducts so she had crusty eyes for awhile which needed antibiotics. Anyway, hope the snot passes soon. Is it yellow? I think when it turns yellow, the cold is on its way out.
@oliviaoblivia: oof! Hope the great sleep returns soon and maybe it'll be even better post growth spurt!
Do you guys wake your babies up in the morning for the day or do you just let them wake up whenever? I try to get her day started at 730 but she will sleep until 9 if i let her.
pineapple / 12793 posts
@SleepyMonkey: we had a good night. Seems all I have to do is write about it. Thanks!
I don't wake her, but big sister does. L usually barrels into my room at eight waking both me and baby. We all cuddle on my need for half an hour. Nurse the baby then head downstairs. I put the baby in the swing and prep breakfast for L. By time we eat the baby is asleep again.
nectarine / 2079 posts
@SleepyMonkey: i used the nose freida on A but I didn't want them sharing so I really need to get a new one for B. Hers was yellowish a few days ago, back to clear. B also got a gunky eye, but it was only for a day or so and seems to have cleared up now. A has never been sick other than a fever in the past so this is all pathetically new to me, haha.
nectarine / 2079 posts
@SleepyMonkey: i don't wake her, if she wants to sleep i want her to sleep. Although, as a SAHM I will have more flexibility in the future vs having to get kids out the door by a certain time.
persimmon / 1177 posts
@mfa_lady: That is crazy and scary!!
No real advice, but I would think something like the merlin magic sleepsuit would prevent her from rolling.
@Radish: glad to hear they're getting better!
@oliviaoblivia: ugh, I feel you on the crappy sleep at night
@SleepyMonkey: I don't wake her up, I'm usually trying to get her to sleep a little longer. But I'll give up on that at 7am and just get up for the day.
A has been on nap strike all week, then her night time sleep is crap because she's so overtired. It's taking forever to get her to sleep during the day, then she'll only nap for 30 minutes max. My mom came over a few days to help out, and she didn't have any better luck than me (and she's raised 5 kids and is usually a pro when it comes to making babies happy)
So frustrating A doesn't act like her tummy hurts or anything is wrong, just can't seem to get to sleep and stay asleep. I pretty much wore her in the Moby wrap all day yesterday and she still would only nap for maybe 30 min at a time. Hope this is just a passing thing and it goes away soon!
grapefruit / 4006 posts
@charmed: we had a terrible day with naps yesterday too. One 45 min nap and two 30 min naps. She was so unhappy before bedtime! I think it is normal. Her sister was a catnapper until 12 months, but difference was she was a happy catnapper and this one isnt!

@mfa_lady: Just seeing this about your little flipper. Can she flip back over if she's not swaddled?
I love this sleep book I've been reading and they actually say that your baby flipping (if they can safely flip back) is a good thing for sleep! They explain that the baby can now move around and pick out a sleeping position that is comfortable for them, and recommend putting them in snug pjs instead of sleep sacks so they can do so. I had never considered that before, but it makes sense to me.
I love how the conversation is mainly about sleep. It's a big topic on my mind as well! The only consistent nap seems to be the morning one, a little over an hour of waking. The rest is anyone's guess!
Bed time is around 6:30-7ish, but the actual falling asleep is a process as well. We are running up the stairs to shove the paci that has fallen out back in her mouth. All I can think is, "This is dumb," but it soothes her right away. I tried last night to take it out before I put her in the crib, hoping she then wouldn't miss it. No luck.
Anyone dealt with paci issues with young babies?

@sorrycharlie: @MrsHansen82: Thanks ladies!
@oliviaoblivia: Oh man, until your post I didn't even think to look and see if it was growth spurt time again. This explains everything. Lots of cluster feeding this week!
@SleepyMonkey: Thanks dear! I've been getting her up when she wakes up which is usually 7:30 - 8:00.

We tried Merlin's Magic Sleepsuit for naps today and it was seriously amazing! Before we would hold L for naps or put him in the swing, and at daycare he has barely been napping at all since he has to be in a crib.
Today for all 3 naps I put him in the suit and in the pack and play, and he fell asleep by himself and slept for an hour twice and 2 hours once! I seriously can not believe how well it worked, and he actually smiled when I put him in it the last time! I'm going to bring it to daycare this week and see if they will use it, and if it keeps working I think we'll try transition from swaddle + rock and play to merlin and crib next weekend.
nectarine / 2079 posts
@HappyBaker: hooray! Signs like life just got easier.
I'm hesitant to put B in her crib/pnp for a nap because she wakes up with a dent in the back of her head after sleeping in them over night and it fixes itself slowly throughout the day.
nectarine / 2079 posts
Ugh, B gave me a terrible night of sleep last night. Went down way late after 2 hours of screaming then 3 hours, 2 hours, 2 hours and 1 hour. 2 of the wake ups were because of very full or overflow wet diapers and the other one i let her fall asleep side nursing and she didn't take the transfer. So I'm on the shitty sleep boat with you ladies as well. What a way to start the week. Since she's been sick i haven't gotten a full nights sleep out of her, but most nights weren't this hard.
grapefruit / 4006 posts
@Radish: aw sorry about the crappy sleep. Now that youve said it out loud, it will go back to your normal stretches of long sleep. Thats how it works!
nectarine / 2079 posts
@SleepyMonkey: Haha, I wish. I think it was a bigger disappointment because usually if she has a witching hour her sleep is great, but I got to deal with witching + multiple night wake ups.
I can't believe that some of you are leaving the "4th trimester" - our babies are going to be crawling and walking before we know it.
Have any of you taken your LOs on a plane yet? We have a flight in May and neither LO1 nor LO2 have flown before, so I'm starting to mentally prep for it all. Luckily, it is only a 2 hour direct flight both ways. Packing will be interesting.
grapefruit / 4006 posts
@Radish: i am sure it is just a phase. Maybe she will surprise you tonight with awesome sleep! We have flown with dd1 a bunch of times. How old is your first? I would just bring a lot of movies/videos for her, coloring books, games, snacks, etc. 2 hrs wont be too bad at all! The baby will probably sleep the whole time. We have done several 3 hr flights and one 5 hr flight. The 5 hr was pretty brutal, i won't lie. She didnt like being confined and her attention span at that time wasn't long enough to sit still and watch movies or shows.

Finally FINALLY breastfeeding on my left has become mostly easy. I think i may have been interfering too much before. Now i just let her latch on her own and she is all good. Putting her down for bed has been better too. We have stuck with a 7:30 bedtime for the past week and i think she is finally getting it. Hoping it sticks (at least for the near term...i know a sleep regression will just mess everything up at some point).
3rd laser treatment today...poor girl. At least we are seeing progress.
nectarine / 2079 posts
@SleepyMonkey: LO1 will be 29 months so I think she will do well. Plus, she is obsessed with airplanes. The flight out there is in the evening, though, and that is probably what worries me the most about LO2 because she is often fussiest around that time. I also looked at the wonder weeks calender and she will be at the beginning of her 4th leap during the whole trip.
Hooray for breastfeeding and bedtime success. I hope the treatment today goes well.
I bought LO a crib mirror and I'm probably unrealistically optimistic that it will solve my problem of her crying in her crib (putting her down, her waking up, etc.).
grapefruit / 4006 posts
@Radish: that is awesome that she loves planes! It will be really fun for her then. Is the flight in a few months? By that time, hopefully dd2 will get over the whole witching hour thing and fall asleep easily. Maybe get her in her pjs and have her blanket and whatever to replicate her bedtime environment as best as you can?
So i am a little reluctant to say it because it might jinx it and also because she is so little but we let dd2 cry a bit on her own when she goes to bed. The first night was 10 mins, the second was 3 and last night no crying. I am not sure it will stick but i couldn't keep rocking her and putting her down and picking her up when she woke up. I did it 4x one night and my back was killing me. I don't think i would let her go longer than 15 mins crying but it hasn't come to that yet. I dont know if less than 15 mins is considered CIO.
pomegranate / 3601 posts
@Radish: I have flown multiple times with LO1 not with bith of them yet though. But let me know if you have questions.
@SleepyMonkey: yay, for easier bedtimes!
grapefruit / 4006 posts
Boo. Back to 2 wake ups at night. Growth spurt perhaps? I knew i shouldn't have said anything about her sleep!
pineapple / 12793 posts
@SleepyMonkey: yuck! We had a few nights and then got back to good sleep. Hoping it's just a growth spurt for you!
@Radish: L has flown a bunch, all but one time were great. The bad time, she hasn't slept the night before because our flight left super early and then our second leg was delayed so instead on napping on the plane she fell asleep while we waited for the flight and then woke up pissed when we had to board.
