A is still EBF and we haven't had to dip into our freezer stash yet. But I may start taking MMP to up my supply on pump/office days.
I nurse him after he wakes up on one side, and pump the other side while getting ready (5 oz)
I pump 2 or 3x a day at work depending on schedule and that yields 12 oz sometimes 15 oz.
DS takes 25-30 oz total a day.
Thinking about starting solids around six months, but I think we may have to sooner! He sits with us in his high chair when we're eating and is starting to show signs of curiosity/interest.
We are going to do a mix of BLW/purees. Probably avocado/sweet potato for first food.
GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts
Still 50/50 formula and breastmilk over here.
I can't wait until we can start decreasing the amount of sessions that I have to nurse/pump. 6-8x a day is such a huge commitment (especially since that only equates to half of her intake!). I can't wait for when she's older, eating more solids, and only nursing 2-3x a day. I feel like I could keep up with that schedule way longer without getting burnt out.

@ChelseaRose: @highwire: @mamamoose: same here with low supply at night... i've been trying to time my last pump the longest away from bedtime nursing session so that he gets one good feed at night from me. the feeding when i got home + bedtime was NOT working.
I'm going to order MMP supplement at @mamamoose:'s recommendation too.
I'm pumping JUST enough to cover a day and I feel like it's going to get worse.

She's OK with nursing in the evening once my milk lets down.. and seems satisfied when she's done. But because she's been having bottles all day she gets frustrated that the milk doesn't start flowing as soon as she starts sucking. And then she fusses and doesn't suck hard enough to get the milk flowing so it's a vicious cycle. I have to just keep hand expressing little drops so she believes that milk will come if she can just settle in and really suck!
persimmon / 1161 posts
So far he's not frustrated with my flow, but I have him on the slowest bottle nipples that I could find. We use Dr brown premie nipples and it takes him 15+ minutes to drink a 4+ ounce bottle. With all other bottles and nipples he would get the milk out too quickly, choke on it, and sometimes spit it up.

We're still EBF but still find it hard. She fluctuates wildly in what she'll eat and my supply seems like it's always going down and I'm always chasing the milk. Now she just wants to comfort nurse all night and still won't take a bottle. Such a stress! @MamaMoose: We have this issue too.... she's a sweet little thing but gets such a temper on her when it comes to milk flow!

Anyone's doctors talk about cereal/food at their 4 month check up?
pear / 1616 posts
@highwire: we had our 4 month visit on friday. my ped recommended waiting to start til closer to 6 months to prevent possible food allergies. and she also recommended starting rice cereal first then moving on to veggies and then fruits. i haven't looked too much into the pros and cons of everything but i'll probably just follow her recommendation as that's generally what i've read.
i'm curious to see what everyone else is doing tho! i can't wait to start her on solids but i want her to stay a baby for awhile longer!
GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts
@kodybear: Yeah we are planning to wait until close to 6 months as well.
I was looking at my mom's baby feeding diary from when she was a baby. And she was already past cereals and onto fruit purees before she was even 2 months old!
honeydew / 7687 posts
I know everyone else has babies in daycare - but how often are they eating?? I feel like LO has lost all hunger cues, and with his irregular, short naps I'm constantly deciding if I ought to feed him before putting him down (2.5 hours since last feed) or hoping he goes down easy and feeding him once he's up (3 or 3.5 hours since last feed).
So I've roughly been doing 7a / 10a / 1p / 3p / 6p / 3a . But lately I feel like he's not always "filling up". When I stretched our feedings from 2 hours to 2.5/3 he started sleeping better... cluster feeding has never worked for us, he seems to just eat less. Should I try stretching to 3.5/4 and dropping to 4 feeds during the day (one overnight)?? I'm scared to mess with it!

I like these separate thread ideas!
LO is still EBF. No signs of interest in food yet so think we'll wait closer to 6 months. Going to discuss at her 4 month Appt this week as well as which food to begin with. Thinking of doing mix of bBLW and purees. I hardly ever pump as I work fm home; very small freezer stash, and haven't really tried to build it up since well be moving in a few months and can't keep any of it. During the day she eats every 2 hrs still. I thought that would extend by she eats very fast (5 min? And I can't get her to go more) so maybe she is just more of a snacker.
cantaloupe / 6630 posts
@highwire: @kodybear: Our doctor mentioned it last week at her belated four month checkup. The resident said to start with rice cereal any time, but I said I wanted to skip it and go straight to purees. She wasn't keen but consulted the supervising doctor, who said it was fine to skip cereal, telling her that since I'm English, it was probably a cultural thing, ha ha. The thing is that my mum and sisters in England, blame my new-found crunchiness on me living in Canada. Whatever, I don't think it's that strange to skip rice cereal. A nutritionist recommended going straight to purees (at a talk she gave to our mom's group) because she believed they didn't have the enzymes they needed in their stomach to digest it until about eight months. But actually the reason we're going straight to purees is I'd like to give her something tasty as her first food : ) We'll probably wait until six months though.

@scg00387: We're not in daycare.... I feel as though we have no structure for eating anymore though. She used to nurse every time she woke up but now a lot of the time she just wants to play/cuddle/chat. The best time for me to feed her is just as she's waking as she's too sleepy to protest, lol, or right before she sleeps. At her appointment last week the nurse said: " but she's feeding at least 15 minutes on each side every time, right?". Ha erm.... no. Not even close. I'm always worried about whether she's eating enough, she's 20 weeks tomorrow and weighs just over 13lb, so teeny tiny, but she has TONS of energy, is so happy and smiley and is following her growth curve so I'm trying not to stress.
honeydew / 7687 posts
@travelgirl1: definitely don't stress if,like you said, he's on the curve and happy! I didn't realize you were staying at home too, glad I'm not the only one! I know by this age they can be very efficient anyways so not sure why they'd focus on length of time eating... My LO isn't even latched when I feel like he's not filling up, he's jut smiling away!
cantaloupe / 6630 posts
@scg00387: Yeah I'll be at home for the forseeable : ) A's latch has never been great but I don't know how to get her to eat more, she often would just rather gaze up and grin at me than eat, or just thrash about, ha ha. The girl has so much energy though, she's definitely not malnourished. I feel like a lot of the doctors/nurses at our practice are book smart but experience poor, apart from the supervising doctor, who I really trust. I've learned not to take the nurses and residents at their word, because they're really quoting books at me, whereas the supervising doctor talks from life experience and has two kids of her own and always makes me feel less of a failure, ha ha. That and HB keeps me sane : )

Does anyone's LO thrash their arms about when they nurse? A's started throwing her arm back and forth hitting us both, or grabbing at my hair or clothes. She's too funny : )
apricot / 371 posts
@TRAVELGIRL1 yes my LO does this! She'll just stop eating and stare up at me smiling so sweetly. Or sometimes she'll throw her arms around all crazy sometimes hitting me in the face.
GOLD / squash / 13464 posts
@travelgirl1: m has taken to rubbing/scratching my chest when she nurses which is not fun at all!!
GOLD / squash / 13464 posts
@scg00387: M is still pretty reliable about eating every three hours both during the week at school and on the weekends with me. But sometimes in the evening she'll get two meals closer together right before bed. I also worry that she might be reverse cycling because sometimes she wants to eat more frequently during the night. I think girlfriend is missing her mama during the day so she's trying to make up for lost time at night!
GOLD / squash / 13464 posts
Because of her food intolerances we are definitely waiting until 6 months. I have a feeling that at our ped appointment Friday he will suggest rice cereal to help her sleep better at night but hubs and I have already agreed we aren't comfortable with that even if it means more sleepless nights!
grapefruit / 4066 posts
@scg00387: when i am at work (part time) she eats a little bit when she wakes up from a nap (about 2 oz) and a little bit when she goes down for a nap (about 3 oz). she has always been a frequent nurser though and i have had a hard time stretching it out. when i am home with her i still just feed on demand, i dont even look at the clock. if you think your LO is ready to start going longer in between feeds, i would give it a try and see. you can start by gradually increasing the time to get him used to it and see how it goes? if it helps your LO sleep longer, i would def try it! i tried doing that with my LO to see if maybe it would help her sleep, and it made it worse, cluster feeding is def the way to go for us, so every baby is different! i would try it and see how he does...
I feel like my LO is no where near ready for solids, she cannot sit up unassisted yet, so i think we will wait til at least 5.5/6 months...I am dying to see her reaction to food, but i am going to wait until she is ready
honeydew / 7687 posts
@travelgirl1: my LO likes to GRAB and pinch ugh! I've mostly thwarted him by shoving my rolled up shirt in his hand, or giving him my finger to hold. he's so silly!
@MamaMoose: ahh i've heard of reverse cycling that stinks! but sort of a compliment?? if it's any consolation, most of what I've read anecdotally and a study or two say that rice cereal doesn't actually help sleep, not that any of my inlaws would agree (allegedly my husband started eating it at 3 weeks and STTN ever since.. rolls eyes)
@NovBaby1112: I think I'm going to try today! I would totally be down with feeding on demand but.. he doesn't usually demand! Sometimes it'll have been 3.5 hours and he wakes up and is happy until I lay him on the boppy and then he screams, like oh yeah! i'm starving! Silly baby.
pear / 1992 posts
@travelgirl1: @ksnow: LO does all of this, too. She's smacked my glasses right off my face once! Not fun. I bought a nursing necklace for her to have something to grab and sometimes it works, but other times she seems very distracted by it and wants to put it in her mouth rather than me.
I also have learned that I shouldn't talk, eat, drink, or kiss DH while she is nursing or else she'll pop right off and want to see what is happening. Distracted, much?
pear / 1992 posts
@highwire: Our doc talked about cereal/solids at our four month check up in the case that we decide to start them before she sees her again at 6 months. She mentioned rice cereal but I was leaning towards avocado or sweet potato as her first food.
Either way we'll be waiting for a while, or at least trying to. She doesn't sit unassisted but is showing interest if she's at the table with us. She almost had her first taste of food when we were out at a ladies brunch this weekend with family. She was sitting in my lap when a slice of coconut cake came my way and before I could even push the plate back her little fist was full of cake! I wiped it off (to her serious disappointment) before she could get it in her mouth... no way is girlfriend's first food going to be cake. I'm saving her first cake taste for her first birthday! Now I'm thinking it should be a coconut cake though
GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts
@lindseykaye: Haha LOs first food was cake icing. Her great grandmother was holding her at a wedding a couple of weeks ago, and fed it to her while I wasn't looking. Yes, I'm still annoyed about it LOL
pear / 1992 posts
@highwire: Oh I would be PISSED. LO's grandpa said he thought about letting her have some peanut butter on his finger while they were hanging out this weekend - but didn't want to without talking to us... which I'm glad he didn't because PEANUT BUTTER?! Oh man.
GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts
@lindseykaye: There's a food we eat on Passover that is apples, walnuts, and wine mixed together. And someone suggested feeding that to her last night. Nuts? Wine? NO.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
@MamaMoose: a's eating schedule is exactly like this, eats every 3 hours during day... his last two meals (bedtime + one before) are sometimes are closer together.
does aunt flo affect milk supply? my supply is just barely making it on my work/pump days... blaaaah
GOLD / squash / 13464 posts
@mrsjyw: I'm sorry AF is back!!! Did you try the More Milk Plus? I pump every three hours and was having to really work to get 4 ounces each session (which is how much M takes for each bottle). Within 48 hours of starting the MMP I get 5 ounces at each session no problem!
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
@MamaMoose: waiting for dh to add to our amazon order, def taking some of this asap! ty!!
pear / 1616 posts
@MamaMoose: is your LO affected at all by MMP? I took the liquid form when LO was about 1 month and she got super fussy!! I still have it and am thinking about trying it again. Maybe she'll react better to it now that shes older.
GOLD / squash / 13464 posts
@kodybear: hmmhhh. My LO hasn't been sleeping well but I think that has more to do with transitioning to day care and the four month sleep regression. When she's awake she's still my super smiley girl!
cantaloupe / 6630 posts
@ksnow: I love the smiling, even though I'd rather she was eating, she gives me her best smiles while nursing : )
@MamaMoose: OMG A does that too, it's like a rythmic scratching (and the girl has LONG nails) - it's left my boobs like a battle groud!
@lindseykaye: Too funny she had her sight set on the cake : ) I wondered if nursing necklaces worked, I keep toying with getting one.

Had a raging stomach flu/food poisoning situation going on the last day or so.
Feel much better now but I'm freaked out about my supply. Lefty seems to be just fine but my right breast is producing less than usual. Might bust open my MMP Special Blend and take that for a bit to get things going again.
FYI, this is what was recommended to me when I was working on establishing my supply:
ttp://www.amazon.com/Special-Blend-Motherlove-Vegetarian-Capsules/dp/B0029WXZG8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1364484206&sr=8-1&keywords=more+milk+plus+special+blend
This type has Goat's Rue added which is another supplemental element that helps supply.

@highwire: I'm sorry! I had that happen about a month ago and it sucks. I was so dehydrated. For two days all i could handle was gatorade and chicken noodle soup. Hope youre back to normal soon!
I'm taking MMP to help with pumping output and haven't noticed a difference yet. I have the liquid for home and capsules for work.
persimmon / 1161 posts
@highwire: isn't charoset usually really chunky too? I'd be worried about choking too, in addition to not wanting to give a baby wine and nuts. We didn't go to Passover this year because it was only my second week back at work and too late in the evening. My cousin an his wife brought their baby who was born mid-October and my mom said that the baby was not happy to be there (tired, but stimulated). My mom also said that they give him 6oz bottles of breast milk! All day! I couldn't imagine producing that much consistently. Also, no wonder their little guy is super chunky if he can eat that much. He's two inches shorter than my LO and about 2 pounds heavier.

Met with a different pedi than normal at our practice today for her 4 month check up.
They gave the go ahead to start cereal, then purees right away (like, right now).
I'm not ready at all. DH wants to move forward.
I asked if she was familiar with BLW and she looked at me like I had two heads "Oh my goodness no. Babies this age are way too young for table food."
Well, no shit lady. I meant in the future. Blergh.
And of course the baby was screaming the whole time we were meeting (so unlike her!) and the doc kept being like "She's hungry, she's hungry." even though she had just downed 4 oz right before we met. So the doc was like "you need to feed her."
So I gave her formula because baby was screaming and I was flustered and didnt want to whip out my breast in a room full of people (She had a nursing student shadowing her).
And then baby was in a horrible mood and still had to get her shots. She had a full belly from the stupid formula so I couldn't nurse her afterwards.
Blargh. Fail. Won't be meeting with that doctor ever again.
pomegranate / 3225 posts
@highwire: That sucks. Our doctor gave us the green light for rice cereal, but I'm not sure I want to start with that, I'm putting it off until closer to 6 months.
