@highwire: 8 months of BFing is awesome, and you are not done yet!! i understand about getting the comments since i have been EPing since the beginning basically. also, we're at about 26oz on average.
do you guys have any advice about getting LO to start drinking out of a straw cup regularly? i know my LO knows HOW to drink from it, but she will only do it once in a blue moon. i offer it to her all the time, and i'm trying to drink from one myself so she sees it. Usually she bats it away. should i start offering juice in it? But then i don't want her to get used to the juice since ultimately i want her to drink her milk from it. i have this fear of having a 10 year old drinking out of a bottle still!!!!

@highwire: I think it's really amazing that you are continuing to EP. And honestly.... I'm a little jealous that your LO isn't interested in your boobs. It's becoming a problem with M. She's with me most of the time and it's almost impossible for me to get dressed in the morning or change clothes when I get home at the end of the day because as soon as she spots a boob she will cry/whine/freak out if I don't let her latch on. Even if she just finished eating ten minutes earlier. And it's totally impossible for me to pump if she's any where near me because she freaks out.

@MamaMoose: aw that sounds tough!!!

@kodybear: I started by putting watered down milk and decreased the amount of milk. Now he has just water and is fine with that.

@DillonLion: why'd you have to change? is that a FNL reference.. or am I just overtired?
@MamaMoose: yeah I SAH but try to pump once a week or so and this past weekend I came home after he'd already taken a bottle of frozen and started to pump and he freaked!! oy.

@DillonLion: ew. I hope you don't have weirdo stalker family members!
@scg00387: oy is right!

@DillonLion: ack, sorry you had to change your u/n. i stopped posting pics and started being alittle more anonymous after i found out some IRL friends read this! ha not sure why but i want to stay incognito. altho if they click my blog link they could figure me out i guess...
@ChelseaRose: okay thanks for the tip! i'll try that. i *may* try with watered down juice first, get her excited about it, then slowly switch to milk. this is the only "milestone" i'm worried about at the moment. haha
honeydew / 7687 posts
@DillonLion: go panthers.
@kodybear: FWIW my LO had the same amount of interest in prune juice as he does water when I attempted to give it for constipation. My pedi said she didn't even care if we were offering it this early so I figure any sips he takes are better than none.

@DillonLion: I was wondering. I've tried to stay under the radar too. I was too open on WB.
Is anyone giving their LO table food yet? Like chunks of fruits/veggies? I've tried a few times with mine but he seems to swallow them whole instead of chew. Any suggestions on how to get him to chew?
GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts
@turkeylurkey: I've tried a few times but she just spits it out.
pear / 1616 posts
@turkeylurkey: yep! At around 8 months LO decided she hated purées (she got sick around that time too). After that she started eating mostly finger foods. I think mum mums and puffs helped her learn how to chew. It took her awhile to get the hang of puffs but once she did she started chewing other finger foods. Now she eats mostly all finger foods. She still gags/coughs at least once per meal which freaks me out. But she's been enjoying meals alot more now! I even sent her first bento to daycare today.
Also she's finally got the hang of the straw cup! Even tho I think she back washes more than she drinks but she's getting there!
pear / 1992 posts
@turkeylurkey: LO likes some chunks - she does well with the very soft stuff like peaches/mangos/tofu. She eats puffs and cheerios and chews on those. She has had small bits of cooked chicken. Sometimes it takes her a long time to actually swallow something after chewing on it and rolling it around in her mouth for a while.
I had to keep reminding the IL's during our vacation weekend that just because it seems like she's done with a bite like that, doesn't mean she is. She's like a little chipmunk - if we let her she would put as many pieces of whatever we're serving in her mouth one after another without actually eating them yet. So, we have to give them one at a time and it slows her down.
Does your LO make chewing motions with his mouth when you feed purees? I noticed mine 'chewing' and that's when I started giving her the food pieces. Until then she wasn't ready.
pear / 1616 posts
i agree with @lindseykaye that u'll notice when your LO starts to do the chewing motion. at first when i gave her puffs she was just letting them melt in her mouth. eventually i saw that she was chewing on them (and wanting more faster!) which is when i started giving her more finger foods.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
Yep we do finger foods along w chubky purees. Ds is a lil piggy n will basicaly eat anything.
He's had bits if all out meals (bfast lunch n dinner) n usually has achunky puree for his dinner 'entree'
Straw cup w water for all meals!
honeydew / 7687 posts
@turkeylurkey: we've been doing a mix of purees and finger foods from the start but just recently he's definitely more interested in the finger foods. have you tried larger pieces, like a slice of avocado, half a banana, or half a slice of bread with hummus on it? Then they sort of half to "bite" a piece off to eat any of it. He also started chewing much more proficiently when I started making a point of eating with him so he saw me chewing.
kiwi / 541 posts
@scg00387: Good suggestions!
I've given him the mum mums and the wagoon wheels. But he sucks on those until they melt. I tried sliced avacado a few weeks ago and he did the whole chocking noisy. Might give that a try again now that he's a little older. I've tried the sippy cup with water at meals but he doesn't get that yet. He is doing a straw when I use it like a dropper and drop the water in his mouth. He likes that!

How many ounces are your LOs eating now in milk?
I was still offering her usual 30 oz plus 3 meals of solids and she wasn't into that at all. Yesterday we only gave her 24 oz (offered one less ounce at each feeding) plus solids and she did much better and nothing got wasted.
pear / 1992 posts
@DillonLion: Not sure how much she is getting in ounces but I know that since she has started STTN she is getting far less milk each day. She hasn't increased her intake at daycare because of it(getting 11-12 ounces) but we have cut back to nursing AM/PM/overnight 1x on weekdays.
She seems to be doing well and even though her weight % dropped from 75th to 50th, her doc was not concerned. She said it was likely due to her increased mobility/activity and not from a lack of milk/nutrients.
clementine / 824 posts
@DillonLion: She is still nursing/bottles 7-8x per day on many days! She doesn't STTN and has been dealing with a cold, ear infections, bad sleep, teeth(?), etc., and I know I've been bad about not encouraging her to drop the nighttime feeding(s) because of this. Plus, I've been fighting the same cold and I think it's done a number on my supply... so lately I've been enabling the bad habit of middle of the night feedings to help with that. Anyways, she's doing three meals a day (but still isn't too into solids) and I have yet to see her milk intake start to drop at all.
clementine / 830 posts
N is eating all his meals with finger foods, he'll take a couple of ounces of purée and complain. The only meal he gets fed is yogurt. He doesn't get using a straw, although I haven't tried in a couple of weeks. He drinks out of a cup that I hold for him, since he started drinking water that way, he has shunned the sippy cup in a "I'm a big boy" way. So cute. This is a pretty regular dinner for him: zucchini, sweet potatoes, salmon.
persimmon / 1161 posts
@DillonLion: at 9.5 months he has about 22 oz or so. On work days I used to give bottles all day, but we are changing to nursing in the morning and before bed because those are the sessions I'm willing to keep beyond a year (if he wants to). So now he's getting 11oz over three bottles while I'm working. He eats three substantial meals and sometimes has a snack too.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
DS is now nursing 4x a day (morning, 2x during day, and bedtime). I think avg he gets ~20-24oz a day, a lil less on days that I'm working because he only takes 6-10oz (varies) in bottles when I'm not home.
Eats 3 solid meals, 2-3 snacks a day. And he's taking his "btls" in a straw cup now.
GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts
She's drinking less and less, but seems on par with what your babies are doing. I'm just so used to having milk ready to go before bed/after wake ups and she's now at the point where she's in no rush to eat...ever! Lol. Guess those solids are keeping her full. We are on 3 meals a day, no snacks yet besides puffs for practice. She's also not super into the purees so I'm going to work more real solid food into the equation now

My daughter still eats 24-26 oz a day of formula, and has 2 big meals (breakfast: fruit, yogurt and puffs, and dinner: meat/veg, fruit and some sort of snack), and her lunch is usually a Baby Gourmet pouch of some sort and some crackers.
I would like to start giving her chunkier finger foods, but she gags on everything! She is a pro at eating puffs, cheesies and crackers, but last week I gave her some steamed carrots, and she just stuffed them into her mouth without chewing and tried to swallow them! I so badly want her to be able to try some of our food, but I just can't trust her!
I thought for sure that by nearly 9.5 months she would be fine to eat most things, but I guess not.
GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts
C will be 9 months tomorrow which means I'm 75% done with my breastfeeding goal!!! Ahhh. And we are finally reachting the stage where supply dips are okay. I realized mine always dips before AF but then comes back up no problem. But glad I can stress less about it thanks to solid foods.

We don't cook much at our house and I'm going to try to start this weekend since it's a holiday and I have a little extra time. What suggestions do you all have that are easy? I'm thinking I'll make a bunch of grilled chicken breast that I can shread up for baby. He seems to enjoy that now. Any dishes you like to make using grilled chicken to add a variety?
pear / 1992 posts
@wildcardinside: LO is good with finger foods now but I have to literally spread them out over her tray, just a few at a time or else she will put them all in her mouth at once. She is not good at regulating yet or eating something and then putting more in her mouth. A couple months ago I had a seriously scary incident involving too many yogurt drops all sticking together in her mouth making one giant glob and her nearly choking on it after eating too many at once.
Maybe try introducing them one at a time for her, or just a couple at once so she isn't as eager?
@DillonLion: Go girl!! Our BF journey hasn't been nearly as challenging as yours and it is so awesome that you have made it this far! I think you'll be able to reach 1 year for sure!
@turkeylurkey: Dishes with grilled chicken for you and DH? I like to put it on salads (chicken caesar yum!) and eat it with any of our favorite grain/veg combos. Lately I've been loving barley/zucchini/red pepper/goat cheese.
kiwi / 541 posts
@lindseykaye: Yes something I can give to baby and then have for DH and I to add more grown-up things to. Thanks for your salad suggestion. I didn't even think about it!

WOHM what are you plans for dropping pump sessions and/or weaning? My little guy just turned 10 months this past weekend, so this has been on my mind. I'm currently pumping two times a day at work and one time at night about 2-3 hours after his last feeding. I'm only getting about 12 oz from those sessions. We're also nursing in the morning and before bed, which I'm fine with keeping for awhile after one (if he's interested). I want to be DONE with pumping when he turns one. I'm thinking that I should probably drop one work session first and change the time of the remaining one (i.e. from 10am/2pm to 12-1pm). Then I'll drop the night one (my least favorite) and finally cut out the day sessions. I'm planning to decrease the minutes of the session that I'm going to drop slowly the week before. Does this all make sense? I'm trying to do it slowly and hopefully avoid clogs/mastitis. To make up the feedings for my dwindling supply i'll use frozen milk because we still have about 70+ servings in the freezer. Any advice or input is greatly appreciated!
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
@ChelseaRose: I also plan on stopping pumpimg at a year.
Last month I dropped to two sessions at work. I pump 2-3 days a wk. Don't pump at home unless I miss a nursing session. Hasn't hit my supply. Ds is taking in around ~20 oz + 3 meals/2-3 snacks a day. We nurse/btl 4x a day.
Ill probably drop down to one session at 11 months. Ds is 9.5 mths now. We have about 75 oz in freezer stash and ill continue am/bedtime sessions til he's ready to wean.
GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts
@ChelseaRose: I had planned to drop a pump session when she turned 9 months but I had some supply things going on so I didn't drop yet. I'm still pumping 2x at work. And 2x at home. Once I get comfortable with my sad little supply to take another hit, ill drop down to 3x a day (1x at work)...Maybe when she turns 10 months? I make 12 oz a day and would love her formula intake to match that or be lower. I never made more than half of what she needs and is love to be able to...
pomegranate / 3225 posts
soo... my supply feels like it has dropped to almost nothing! I am still nursing her 4x a day or at least trying to, but at her bedtime feeding she starts screaming and crying like she's still hungry. I thought I would make it to a year, but it looks like it's not going to happen. I could try to increase my supply, but I'm just not sure. I feel conflicted...
GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts
@kml636: same. I wonder if it is normal at this stage? She's been really fussy right before bed like she's not satisfied. I'm topping off the breastmilk with a couple of formula ounces.
But overall my supply is down about 25% and I've made no change in my schedule (I EP)
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
@kml636: my supply has def come down after 8 months since DS is taking in solid meals and i cut down a feeding/pumping session. I'd say he takes in around 20 oz (give or take a few depending on the day) through 4x sessions. either nursing/btl. aside from am/pm i think he only takes in 3-4 oz for his daytime feeding as well.
i take fenugreek and calcium/mag tablets during AF time, but elsewise from that I think I'm getting making JUST enough of waht he needs daily and will hopefully make it a couple more months. if not, oh well. pedi suggested we introduce milk at 11/11.5 months slowly...so that's my goal right now.
pomegranate / 3225 posts
@DillonLion: @mrsjyw: thanks ladies. For now I'm still trying to offer her the breast first and then follow up with formula... we'll see.
kiwi / 541 posts
@ChelseaRose: I did something similar to what you have here. I left the morning and evening feelings and never had any pain.
@kml636: when I started weaning I felt conflicted too and thought about starting up again to make it increase. But I'm glad I went ahead and stopped. I work and was hating pumping. And I have some supply in the freezer so I still give him breast milk once a week.
GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts
How many times are you all pumping at work these days? I'm still at 2x but wish I could drop down to one. I maxed out at 12 oz a day total, but lately I only make 10 oz. If I drop a session I know it will decrease from there. Not sure if I'm ready or not!
