@highwire: definitely call your doctor, and seriously, maybe it's time to switch to formula. Remember, everyone says it gets easier. Just get through the rest of today!

@scg00387: oh no! Feel better soon, that sounds painful!
@ChelseaRose: enjoy your alone time, hope it goes well
@highwire: oh I'm sorry, you've been trying so hard with breastfeeding. Have you read Mrs bee's post about increasing your supply?

@travelgirl1: nope! Can you post the link? I'll try to search also

So I just breastfed in public, yeah! We were in the mall, she was rejecting the bottle and sobbing, so I bit the bullet. Totally not dressed for the occasion, with a builder's bum because I forgot to pull my jeans up properly before I sat down. But I did it, yeah! She ate like I'd starved her all day, lol.
Oh, also, I went to buy a nursing bra and as I was trying it on my boobs let down!!! Agh! So I ripped it off, milk spilling all over me and the floor, and tried to get my old one on. Was super embarrassed at the checkout, lol.

@highwire: I'm so sorry. I think you said you aren't waking C up to eat. I would try doing that. I know it sucks to wake them up at night when all you want to do is get some sleep but I think if you do a few days of nursing at least every four hours it will really help your supply.

@highwire: so sorry to hear! i was where u were a couple weeks ago where LO would latch and bf for awhile but wasn't gaining weight. exclusively pumping has def brought my stress levels down and i actually started enjoying our nighttime feedings. maybe after a couple days of pumping see if u want to keep going the breastmilk route or just start formula. either way i'd do whatever makes u happier. and if you want to keep trying nursing maybe see if LO has a tongue tie? just went to the ENT doctor today and right away the dr said my LO had a tongue tie (anterior). i'm not sure how much of a diff clipping it has made yet but when she latched earlier it didn't hurt! anyway i'd think about yourself first and do whatever will make u happier

@travelgirl1: haha you are so brave!! I haven't nursed in front of anyone but my hubs and mom. Even when my in laws were here I always went upstairs to eat. I can't imagine making it work in public any time soon!! Also... A Carter's commercial totally made my milk let down the other day!

Thanks everyone
@mamamoose a cupcake made mine let down yesterday not sure what that says about me lol...
@travelgirl1 that's awesome in public ! I was trying on nursing bras and trying to keep nursing pads in place so I didn't get lanolin everywhere it was a mess
@highwire so sorry to hear that I hope your Ob can get you in quick and things go up from here. I've read about lactation cookies, might be a yummy option to try!

@highwire: sorry you are having a tough time with bf-ing, mama. hang in there. i hope the LC's advice helps but bf-ing isn't for everyone. if it is making you so miserable, then stop!! formula isn't the devil. i bet a bunch of us were formula babies...i know i was and so were my brothers, and we all turned out a-ok. i'm glad you are going to talk to your doc about PPD though. that takes a lot of strength to ask for help and i hope she can help.
@travelgirl1: nice job on the public bf-ing!! i let down every 2-3 hours, so if i haven't fed her in that amount of time, my boobs will let down anywhere and everywhere. fortunately the nursing pads can keep it in...i'm wondering when i'll stop having to use nursing pads. i go thru a box pretty quickly, i'm wondering whether to just buy them in bulk.
@scg00387: that sounds awful! feel better soon!!

@highwire: I'm on my phone so can't post the link but if you go to guides, then scroll down to breastfeeding and click, you'll find it there. I was only reading it 2 days ago, it's very helpful.

@mrsjyw: Oh my gosh, what a cutie!!
@travelgirl1: Thanks! I found it. She also wrote another blog post about it as well that was great.
@JessLC: Thanks for your support. I was a formula fed baby after the first week as well.
@kodybear: I will ask the lactation consultant about a tongue tie. Thanks for the suggestion.
@MamaMoose: Thanks! Yeah I'm going to make sure to get up and definitely at least get a pumping session in. I have had too many days lately where I wind up sleeping through the night entirely. Feels great, but it has definitely prevented my supply from increasing.
@travelgirl1: Nice job on the public breastfeeding!!!
@Mrs. Tricycle: Thank you!
So I had the lactation appointment this morning and then attended the breastfeeding support group this afternoon. Both of these things made me feel better. I'm so happy to just have a different game plan to try for now. The new plan is to take More Milk Plus Special Blend 3x a day, pump 8x a day, and I'm going to nurse morning and evenings just to keep us both in the habit, but I'm not going to stress about getting a nursing session in every time. I'm going to see how this goes over the next few days and hopefully we'll see some kind of success with it. I was originally going to cut out the pumping and just stick to nursing, but after doing her weight check at the lactation appointment and realizing she wasn't taking in anything via the breast, the pumping seems like it would be a better decision for now, just so I can be sure that she is definitely getting breastmilk, even if it has to come from a bottle (which we seem to BOTH prefer anyway!)

DH took the day off work tomorrow with plans to "Help Me" all day! Yeehaw. I am so happy.
cantaloupe / 6630 posts
@highwire: that's great, hopefully tomorrow will be easier! In terms of supply, mine halved a few days ago and I'm sure it was letting her sleep through night feedings that did it. It seems back to normal today and what helped was eating oatmeal, eating wel in general and drinking more (I'd been terrible at eating and drinking) and pumping for double the time. Really hope it gets easier for you!

Up for a 3 am feed and catching up on the posts from the past few days.... Hang in there everybody! It seems like everybody is telling me that things do get better. Waiting for the day where he socially smiles and sleeps longer during the night but for now I'm trying to enjoy these early morning feeds.
cantaloupe / 6630 posts
@clery: A has been smiling socially for about a week now, I love it! Tapping her on the nose is the best way to make her do it but sometimes she just looks right at us and gives us a huge smile heart melt.
persimmon / 1161 posts
@clery: My little guy has been smiling since he was about one month old. It is awesome! Hopefully things improve soon.
At six weeks old I feel like I can't really complain much about baby because he usually only wakes up once between 10 and 8. Sure, it would be great if he slept longer, but he's hungry in the middle of the night and I don't think he could go without nursing. Maybe he will just change the time of his middle of the night feed so I get a longer stretch first. We will see.

@highwire: Hang in there! Glad you have a breastfeeding support group to help you through too. I go to mine at least once a week (they do it three times a week at my hospital). It's a big help.
We haven't had another 7 hour stretch of sleep at night which is disappointing. Last night she slept 10 pm to 4:11 am (6 hours 10 min) and then again from 4:50-7:50 am (3 hours). Our goal right now is to get her to 10 pm-5 am consistently. She'll be going to daycare at 6 am every morning once I go back to work. Once we hit that, I'll start moving her bedtime earlier.
My supply has gone down a bit too, I pump after her 7/8 am nursing session. I used to get 3.5 oz and now I'm only getting 1. I'm going to try to replace the valve in my pump to see if that's part of the issue, and I've been drinking mother's milk tea and just ordered the Milk Plus. Going by her diaper count it looks like she's getting enough, but I want to build a stash for when she starts daycare and if we need to leave her with a babysitter at some point.
grapefruit / 4006 posts
@clery: the social smiles are the best! i get them right after she is fed and clean, and that is when she is the happiest. she also coos and kicks excitedly too. she started smiling and doing sporadic coos around 4 weeks. it really does melt your heart!

Been exclusively pumping since yesterday...supply is tanking but hopefully the Mothers Milk Plus Special Blend will kick in over the next couple of days.
Put in a message to my OB and he called in a prescription for Zoloft so I started that today. We will see how things go over the next few days...

How often do your LO's spit up? I've been trying to keep DD upright after eating but don't know that I'm seeing any improvement. This morning, she had a projectile spit up that was almost like a water fountain pouring out of her mouth. Later on (two hours after she last ate) she was sitting in her carseat after we just got home and I was putting away the groceries and was woken up to spit up coming out her nose. Just now, I looked at the monitor while she was napping and hearing her cough and saw a huge wet spot around her head and her was face all wet.
Last time at the ped, we talked about reflux but they kind of brushed it off saying that all babies have some degree of reflux, and just said to keep her upright for a 1/2 hr after eating and burp her often. She is gaining plenty of weight, but I still feel like hers is more of an issue than normal spitting up. Her one month is next Thursday, so hopefully they have more suggestions then. Do yours spit up this bad?
pomegranate / 3225 posts
@highwire: hang in there. Hopefully the Zoloft will help. Also, I drank some of that tea and I didn't think much of it, but I think it made a difference!
@SLR: Mine doesn't, she's three weeks, but she does spit up some. I have read that all babies have some amount of spitting up. I would definitely ask about it at your next appointment!
cantaloupe / 6630 posts
@SLR: I was worried about this the other day after a big spit up, but keeping her upright after feeding has made a huge difference. Have you noticed a change in the amount of spit up your lo has? A is more likely to do it if laid down, or she's been laid down and I pi ck her up suddenly. There's only been twice that I was seriously concerned at the amount.
grapefruit / 4006 posts
@kml636: oh. my. GAAAAAAAAAAAH this is so cute! i'm dying from the abundant cuteness!! love.
@SLR: mine hasn't been a huge spitter...yesterday she spit up a few times, every time i was changing her. i think when i jostle her around a little too much after feeding, she spits up. if your LO is happy, i think its ok? my LC told me that babies with reflux will cry and cry in pain from it. but not sure.
honeydew / 7687 posts
@SLR: it's about once a day for us but it never seems to upset him. It seems to happen most when he's eaten really well and just runs out of room!
clementine / 824 posts
@kml636: Love it!!
@travelgirl1: I haven't noticed a huge difference. She started doing it pretty bad about two weeks ago and it seems she has good days and bad days.
GOLD / squash / 13464 posts
@highwire: hope the Zoloft makes a difference for you. I know a lot of people who have had great success on it. Good for you for asking for help when you needed it. And if I were you I wouldn't hesitate a bit to switch to all formula if that will remove stress from your life.
@SLR: We had spit up issues too but for us keeping up right is really helpful. Like @travelgirl1: Now LO mostly just spits up if I lay her down too soon or pick her up fast. If its getting to the point where the spit up is projectile I think it's time to talk to the doctor about other things that can be done to help.

Do your LOs sometimes fuss before they poop? M has started crying and squirming for like 30 seconds right before she squeezes one out. I can't decide if this seems totally normal, or if it means going is some how painful for her. She stops fussing as soon as she goes, and she is still having plenty of poops and they are yellow and seedy like they should be...
persimmon / 1161 posts
@MamaMoose: He did this today actually. It isn't something that I notice every time though.
clementine / 824 posts
@MamaMoose: She doesn't fuss often when she goes. But she sure does let 'em rip when she poops...very loudly!
