Today I nursed at the mall in the nursing room. It actually had a comfy chair, room for a stroller, trash can, and a door that locked. They also have a separate baby changing area and several family bathrooms. I had not been there since the baby was born and I was really impressed with the accommodations.

@ChelseaRose: that is so nice your mall has that!

@kml636: I didn't expect it at all. I was expecting to use the lounge in the ladies room at Nordstrom, but the nursing room was better. It was so nice to be out and not worried about using a cover. Even at 9 weeks we struggle sometimes with latching, which is even more challenging when hassling with the cover too.

Hi everybody! Even though I have not been active I have been following along.

Lo has acid reflux. The doctor gave us a perscription and we are debating whether to give it to him. There are good feeds and bad feeds. I guess I will see in the next couple of days.

DH and I were sick over the holidays. M did get fussy but luckily it wasn't as full blown as what we had. I guess I can thank breast feeding for that.

M had his two month shots today. He has been sleepy and clingy the whole day. I know he must be uncomfortable so I plan to do nothing but cuddle him until the effects of the immunizations wear off. Anticipating a long night ahead!

It seems like there are lots of reflux babies - I'm curious when/how they were diagnosed or how they acted pre-meds?? My little guy has seemed pained by spit up at about every other nursing session the last 2 days and I hate it/not knowing if it is something to pursue! We're meeting our pediatrician (after moving) next week but thought I'd ask you ladies.

Put him in the big crib instead of the bassinet for his first nap of the day.. so far so good knock on wood! Not looking forward to changing that crib sheet if there is a mess in the middle of the night though.

@scg00387: well I had suspected silent reflux for awhile and mentioned her symptoms to the pediatrician...the problem is, maybe of the symptoms of reflux are the same as other issues. Her main symptoms were a general unsettled feeling after eating, couldn't lay her flat on back or she would grunt and spit up or get hiccups, fussiness while feeding, especially after, refusal to nurse at times....however these symptoms are also Similar to overactive letdown which an LC thought I may have as well....so it's all just trial and error trying to nail down the problem. On top of that, LO has a posterior tongue tie and lip tie which we just found out about....so needless to say nursing has been hard!!

@scg00387: so we saw our ped today to talk about LO's reflux issues. He was really anti putting her on medicine. He said he only suggests medicine if baby is losing weight or is basically inconsolable on a regular basis. Well my LO has gained ELEVEN ounces since Monday. Yeah... No weight problems! And while she shows signs of discomfort (grunting and arching her head back) she's certainly not anywhere near inconsolable. Doc thinks she's MSPI (she has mucusy poop with flecks of blood) so he wants me to do a full two weeks of elimination diet and then reasses the situation from there. He just suggests we take steps to combat the reflux (keep upright for 30 minutes after eating, burp every ten minutes while breast feeding or every ounce while bottle feeding,, and don't jostle her at all after she eats).

@MamaMoose: thanks for sharing that! I'm going to ask the pediatrician on Wednesday what she thinks. I don't think we're having weight problems either but I hate seeing him in pain! I let him sleep on me today and heard reflux wake him up and it was so sad

@MamaMoose: that is helpful. i just posted on the main boards about silent reflux, my LO has been arching her back a lot lately in the last week - i don't know if its reflux or what. i am somewhat hesitant to put her on meds, she doesn't seem too much in pain (although there have been a few times over the last week she was crying in pain and i'm not sure what it was), but maybe just uncomfortable. i feel still bad.

@scg00387: when you say you heard the reflux - what does it sound like? we just put LO in her crib for the first time ever tonight too! we put her down at 8:45pm and she actually fell asleep! shocked because 1) she never goes down until after 10pm and 2) its in her crib...in her room for the first time ever! anyway. we'll see if she stays asleep.

@JessLC: I feel terrible too. I went in dead set on getting meds but I'm glad the doctor talked me off the ledge. Hopefully we can get her sorted out with diet change.

What are you ladies going to do for birth control? At my 6 week check up I decided on the mini pill.

I hate the thought of hormones but since I just had a uterine infection, I didn't want an IUD. Hoping it doesn't effect my milk supply...

  14. MamaMoose

    GOLD / squash / 13464 posts

@kml636: we are just going to use condoms. Not ideal but I really don't want to risk my supply taking a hit and I don't love the way I feel on hormonal birth control anyway. I considered a non hormonal IUD but hubs wasn't comfortable with it and worried about risk to me. Hopefully condoms + EBF will do the trick. I can't wait until we are done and hubs can just get a vasectomy.

  15. SleepyMonkey

    grapefruit / 4006 posts

@mrsjyw: you can get thru it mama! should only be a few days and then the next one i think is far off. like 6 months or something.

@kml636: i am really stuck on the issue of birth control. i kind of don't want to do anything hormonal, but i hate condoms! copper IUD would make my terrible periods even worse. so...i dunno. i have a pack of the mini pill but haven't taken it yet because i'm nervous about my supply. let us know if you notice anything with your supply?

we put LO in her crib for the first time last night and she woke up after 4 hours. then went back down for 7. so it wasn't terrible, but wasn't the long stretches that she has been having in the past couple of weeks. hopefully her normal sleep habits will resume quickly.

@kml636: I got a prescription for the mini pill too but think we are going to use condoms...not sure I'm ready for hormones!

@jesslc: thanks mama! Can't wait for the longer stretches of slrep!

Dh took first shift and I got some decent sleep last night! Hoping it warms a biy so we can take a out for a walk at the outdoor mall across the street...

    Have a great wknd mamas!

@JessLC: hope she stayed asleep! He was asleep on top of me and I heard his stomach growl and then he woke up, screamed and gulped fluid down and passed back out today's been better though so far!

@scg00387: aw...poor thing!! i will have to pay closer attention to my LO's random swallowing. she hasn't been crying in pain for the last couple of days, but still a lot of arching and twisting.

  20. kml636

    pomegranate / 3225 posts

@MamaMoose: yeah, I'm all about the vasectomy in a few years!

  21. SleepyMonkey

    grapefruit / 4006 posts

@mamamoose: @kml636: this may be a stupid question - is a vasectomy much easier than getting your tubes tied? my mom said they tied her tubes right after she delivered me, so she urged me to get it done when we are done. she said it was no big deal.

how many kids do you think you want to have? i was one of 3 kids and i always thought it was a lot of fun growing up. so i always wanted to have 3 kids too, but now it seems like that would be a lot of work! we will see, i guess.

  22. immabeetoo

    honeydew / 7687 posts

@JessLC: not to budge in but vasectomy is outpatient vs tubes tied is a bigger surgery to my understanding. I think we're only doing one bio baby and adopting through she's so a vasectomy is in our near future. I'm so glad to be done with hormonal stuff!

  23. MamaMoose

    GOLD / squash / 13464 posts

@JessLC: if you have a c section they can tie your tubes while they are in there. If you deliver vaginally then I would opt for a vasectomy, as it's much less invasive surgery than getting your tubes tied. Vasectomies also have a higher success rate with reversals just in case you guys had a major change of heart down the road.

  24. kml636

    pomegranate / 3225 posts

@JessLC: I'm thinking 2 or 3, depending... yes I think it would be chaos for probably 10 years! LOL! And expensive. So we'll see.

My mom also got her tubes tied, but vasectomy is much easier. A guy i work with got it done Friday, back to work Monday!

Ps do you guys after spit up? Lo has been crying after an in beyween burp session for more...but I'm afraid of overfeedong him whe. He spits up in between boobs.

@mrsjyw: I continue to feed after a spit-up, or at least offer more, but don't go out of my way to help him latch/re-latch.

I had a copper IUD before pregnancy, so I'm planning to do the same.

  28. MamaMoose

@mrsjyw: I specifically asked the doc about letting her eat more right after a spit and he said to definitely let her eat if she's hungry.

@kml636: i'm really not sure about birth control. I have PCOS so it's highly unlikely I'd get preg anyway... I had acupuncture to get me ovulating the first time... So we're going to use nothing. Bit contraversial I know but we're really not doing it all that much at the mo anyway.

Have any of your babies become fussy at the breast? A used to calm down there straight away but is become really annoyed there sometimes, to the point where I have to take her off and comfort her. I think maybe the flow is too slow? Anyway I went to get some More Milk Plus today in case it a supply issue and the shop owner was super helpful in reminding me that her crying and sucking more is a way of telling my body to make more milk and it was perfectly normal but it's still pretty stressful. She used to be the easiest baby going, now the clock strikes bedtime and she becomes fuss pot of the year!

  31. Mrs. Tricycle

    blogger / pear / 1964 posts

@travelgirl1: yup! I think the increased fussing while nursing was tied to his 6 week growth spurt. When he starts to get fussy I do breast compressions - look up the how to in KellyMom - that has helped.

  32. SLR

    clementine / 824 posts

@travelgirl1: Mine was super fussy a couple weeks back, but it has gotten a little better. I burp her whenever she pops off for a break and she still fusses then (like she's upset that I'm taking her food away).

I'm also not sure about BC options. I had my 6wk appt last week and had considered the mini pill, but then chose to hold off for now. I have to go back in March for my annual check up, so I'll decide then. And, I'm still not 100% sure if I'll be sticking with BF'g when I go back to work, so if not, I'd probably just go back to the pill, as much as I hate the hormones.

The whole BF'g and pumping at work vs. formula thing is still weighing on my conscious. I'd love to give her the benefits of breastmilk, but it's been so frustrating as well. She wants to eat every two hours on the dot (sometimes more) and my flow is super fast, so I've found BF'g to be extremely messy and cumbersome. I feel so selfish though if I don't stick with it.

Night sleep has been crap the past few days. She had gotten better last week, having one 4 hour stretch followed by a couple 2-3 hours. But she's since gone back to 2-3 hours. I really wish I could think of something to improve this. I don't know I'll be able to manage this schedule when it's time to go back to work! I haven't read Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child yet, but have heard so many people that recommend it. Was thinking about going to the library today to check it out.

@travelgirl1: dd has been really fussy at the breast lately, it started around 6 weeks..I have a very fast flow and overactive letdown though...I miss calm and blissful nursing sessions...I honestly never in a million years expected breastfeeding to be so hard for something that is supposed to be so natural

@SLR: I totally know ow you feel about the whole pumping at work vs formula thing....I've been trying to figure out what to do as well....formula seems like it would be so much easier at this point but then I will get 1 good nursing session in and look at her content little face and know I will miss that, but most of our feelings right now are filled with frustration and tears on both our parts...plus I haven't even had time to pump to build a supply bc she eats so frequently

  34. kml636

    pomegranate / 3225 posts

@travelgirl1: I am temped to do the same. It just doesn't seem right putting hormones in my body when I'm probably not ovulating anyways.

@Mrs. Tricycle: how many days did the 6 wk feeding frenzy last for you? A started the 1-2 hr feedings two days ago and last night stretched to 3hrs... need my 4 hr stretches back!

  36. MamaMoose

    GOLD / squash / 13464 posts

@mrsjyw: have you tried the bottle top off trick at night? M has been eating more frequently during the day lately... But so far it hasn't affected night sleep at all (fingers crossed!) Hubs usually gives M an ounce to an ounce and a half from a bottle after our last nursing session (around 9pm). Last night she went down at 10 and slept until 5am.

  37. mrsjyw

Do you swaddle? A has been hating it bu outgrew the nb liunger so we've been back to swadling the last cpl days. Can't tell.if his shirt stretches are from growth spurt or adjusting to sleeping on flat mattress.. or both!

If people are going to constantly ask to come over and see LO, I'd appreciate it if they arrived when they said they would. Ahem.
