@travelgirl1: Our problem isn’t getting Em to go to sleep; it’s keeping her asleep. I’ve been trying to put her down drowsy but awake whenever possible. It doesn’t always work this way though. Sometimes she’ll pass out while nursing or laying on one of us, so then we’ll just put her down asleep. Now that she’s getting older, I’ve been trying to get better about a nighttime routine with a bath (every other night), quiet time, jammies, story, and bed. I had been feeding last, but am thinking maybe I should move this before the story so I don’t create a habit of nursing to sleep. We try to put her down around 7:30, but sometimes it ends up closer to 8pm. The hardest thing for me to figure out is when her last nap should be. We often get to an awkward point (around 5-5:30) where she has been up for a while and starting to get cranky, but it is too soon for bed. When this happens, we’ve been trying for the nap – even if it pushes bedtime out a half hour or so.
She weighs about 13lbs 5oz now. But I think she lost a little weight while she was sick. I think she was closer to 14lbs before that.

@ChelseaRose: I was curious about the Merlin sleep suit. What’s it like? It kind of looks like a snow suit! Surely it’s a lighter material though?

@SLR: It looks like a snow suit, totally. We have been making all kinds of jokes about it. Lol. The outer part is fleece and the inner part is cotton, but overall it doesn't seem like it would be too warm. I put him in it in a onesie and socks, rather than cotton pajamas like I did with the cotton swaddleme blanket. When I took him out of it he did not seem overly warm or too cold. According to the monitor the nursery temp is 72 degrees. I think he slept at least as good as he would when swaddled. He woke up after 8 hours and was super hungry despite feeding him really well at bedtime and topping him off with a little extra milk (he only drank about an ounce). I feel so much safer with him in the Merlin suit compared to swaddled after the rolling over incident. He can't get the same momentum as he could when swaddled to flip over. We are going to keep using it and may even consider buying the next size up when he's ready.

@SleepyMonkey: I wish he weren't so big.. I'm short and he's getting harder to lift into the crib I've never tried Pilates but maybe ill look online for free videos on YouTube. We're suffering distracted nursing as well... Sometimes I'm not sure when to cut him off bc I want him to fill up but it takes forever when he takes one gulp and pulls off to chatter or look around.

@SLR: I hate that awkward timing you're talking about!! Lately we've been skipping trying another nap bc he just fights it and bumping bed time up.

@Mrs. Tricycle: eep I'm interested to hear about the sleep training. DH has been keen on exploring options but I'm trying to give him more time to work it out naturally bc he seems to be trying to. Glad stuffs good otherwise!

Left her arms totally out of the swaddle last night and did her usual stretch these days - 8 PM until 5 AM. Not too shabby! But when I have to get up for work at 6 that 5 AM wake-up is kind of depressing...as soon as we both drift off again BAM - alarm clock.

@highwire: that's great that she slept well without the swaddle! You're lucky that the transition was easy for your LO. @scg00387: I think we are going to do sleep training when he is about six months and get rid of the pacifier if he doesn't self wean from it sooner.
@SLR: we are dealing with the awkward evening thing too. He used to nap and get up around 6:45/7, which worked great for starting bedtime routine at 8:30, down around 9. His naps have been really inconsistent lately and he sometimes won't nap past 6/6:15, which means I need to start bedtime stuff around 7:30. I hate that we haven't had a consistent bedtime recently. In preparation for going back to work we are going to start waking him up at the same time everyday to see if that helps. He hasn't quite been making it to what I consider morning recently. When I feed him at 4-6am I always put him back down and let him sleep, which is sometimes until 9/9:15. We decided that we are going to get him up at 7:15/7:30 regardless of when he was last up. I hope this helps his naps normalize because they have been ranging from 30 minutes to 2 hours with no predictability.

Trying a new regimen at daycare. Lately she's been taking a massive nap in the afternoons (1 PM - 5 PM) while she is there. Today, I asked that they wake her up at 4 and give her another bottle. Hopefully eating more during the day (like we did when I was still on maternity leave and nursing on demand) will help her STTN again.

For those of you back at work, are you still able to put LO down as early as before? I used put her down around 7/730 PM. Last night, she didn't go down until 8:45 PM!! (and woke up at 330 AM (ugh) and then 7 AM for the day. I need to get better about putting her down earlier. I am too busy trying to soak up cuddles and time with her since it is the only time in the day we get quality time together

@highwire: I try for 8 pm. Yesterday it was 8:30, but she slept through until 6. So sad to not get more time together!

@scg00387: i have the same issue. i can try for like 30 mins trying to get her back on, and its a total crapshoot! what are your techniques for getting your LO latched back on?? i feel like i'm so ineffective at it.

@SLR: if she wakes up at 5pm or after from her nap, then we'll just keep her up until bedtime and move her bedtime up a little earlier so she doesn't have a meltdown.

@highwire: i do put LO down at the same time for bed even though i'm back at work. i just spend 2 hours from when i get home from work with her...nurse, play, bedtime routine, nurse, then bed around 7:30-8pm. it sucks having so little time with her now, but i appreciate the time i have with her immensely.

4-month check up today...she weighs 14 lbs 11 oz and is 26 inches! tall, but skinny. got her two shots and the rotavirus oral vaccine. she didn't cry at all with the first shot, then the second shot she screamed for about 10 seconds then just had her pouty face on. she's napping now, i hope she is ok when she wakes up.

    honeydew / 7687 posts

@SleepyMonkey: I've only had luck if I give him my finger to hold and keep offering. Sometimes he'll be distracted by something specific so I try to move my head and break his sight line. It's frustrating bc today I persisted and then he ate really well after ten mins of dithering... But then I feel like we wasted his awake time if I try and he doesn't eat any more! Glad the check up went well!

@highwire: holy cow you're lucky! I would keel over in shock at this point if my LO napped longer than an hour, anywhere! But I hope breaking that up gets you back to STTN

@scg00387: I know it is pretty crazy! And she still takes like 3 naps earlier in the day also (usually about 45-1 hour long!)

She is a sleepy lady LOL

    honeydew / 7687 posts

@highwire: I am so jealous that's crazy! LO takes four 30 min naps and 11 hrs overnight on a good day. Thankfully he's very happy when Awake otherwise I'd go bonkers!

@SLR: we totally hit that awkward point too... that last nap is so hard to time right now.

@highwire: i usually try to get home before 530 which gives me an hour until bathtime, and then bedtime is 730. makes me sad to only get 2 hours with him but i dont want to mess with his wonderful nighttime sleep.

A sleeps 7/730 for 12 hours, and naps usually 3x a day for 45 min. sometimes it's more naps, but 20/30min. I think he's right around the 15 hour sleep/day mark.

@mrsjyw: With traffic and daycare pickup, we don't get home until 630 every night (and we drop her off at 730 in the morning!) Ack. Stupid long commute.

My poor little guy had his first cold. He's not in daycare, but we spend time every week with other moms and babies so he probably picked it up that way. He's been coughing a little bit and sounds congested. Luckily, no fever. We have his 4 month appointment next week, but I wonder if they will end up givin him shots if he has a cold. I'm also not feeling well today, but that's due to an awful case of food poisoning. My mom came over to help me today because I feel so weak and needed to get some sleep after being up all night. My little guy decided to take it easy on us last night and slept from 8:30-5, husband gave him the pacifier and then he slept until about 6:45. Night two with the Merlin's magic suit appears to be a success.

LO made her first artwork today! They painted her feet two different colors and stamped them on paper in a butterfly shape! They did it for all the babies in order to decorate the door of the classroom! Later on they will let us take it home. I can't wait!

And then apparently LO was laying on the floor next to another baby and they were just chatting away in baby talk! Ack I love our daycare.

@ChelseaRose: Yuck Hope you both feel better soon! Glad the sleepsuit is working for you!

We had our first one night wake up last night, eep!! 7:30-7 with a feed at 3. He squawked and opened his eyes around 5 but put himself back to sleep until 7!! HUGE! I know most of you are STTN'ers but... this is big for me anyways! He went down well at 7:30 again and I would be over the moon if it happened again.

we've been going through that weird last nap issue too. LO seems fussier these past couple nights and i think its a sign she wants to sleep earlier. right now i put her down at 830 so i'm going to slowly inch it up.

i can't believe some of your LO's are already at 4 months! is anyone thinking about starting solids yet? i haven't read much about the benefits of starting earlier or later but i know it'll be fun once we start!

  26. ChelseaRose

    persimmon / 1161 posts

@kodybear: my little guy is four months old today. I don't think we will start solids until he's at least six months old. He not really showing any interest in food yet and I don't want to rush it. He has the whole rest of his life to eat food.

Last night was rough. She went down at 815, up at 1130, 330, 5, and up for the day at 630.

Yawn. I think she has a little cold. She's in a good mood, but sounds super stuffy (but I see no boogers in her nose)

Doing an experiment tonight. Put her back in a tight swaddle to see if that helps her sleep better. Maybe we weaned from that too early/quickly. I also sent extra breastmilk and formula to daycare so she got some more calories in her during the day.

Awww all your babies weigh so much more than my little slip of a thing! She's just over 12lb and 16 weeks old! She's doing well on her growth curve though, I guess she just isn't meant to be a big girl. Tall though!

Glad all your babies seem to be doing so well in daycare. I can't believe how old they're all getting now. Seems like two minutes ago we were all waiting to pop : )

My little guy has gotten worse. We also found out that another baby that he was around earlier this week has RSV, so that might be what he has too. I panicked yesterday and took him to the doctor, who said that his chest and ears are clear so we just have to ride it out for now. I'm sad that he doesn't feel well and we are also going to have to miss out of getting professional pics taken tomorrow with all our baby friends. We made them matching bow ties for boys and headband bow/flower things for girls and were going to take pics in diapers only with the ties/bows. I don't want to take him out if he's not well and I definitely don't want to expose the other babies to his illness.

Thanks for the well wishes for my little guy. He's still congested and coughing, but doesn't seem to be getting any worse.

Is anyone else dealing with a lot of hair loss right now? In the past 2-3 weeks it seems to have increased a lot. I have long, thick hair to begin with, but it just seems like a lot. I'm eating enough, drinking lots of water, taking a prenatal, and just started taking biotin. Is there anything else that can be done to help? I think I'm going to get my hair cut this week, which should make me feel a little better. Also, my hairdresser (a friend, same age as me) had a baby about a month before I did so I can ask her more about this too.

@ChelseaRose: yep my hair is shedding hope it doesn't get drastic!

  39. SleepyMonkey

    grapefruit / 4006 posts

@ChelseaRose: yes the shedding has picked up pretty dramatically. I find hair in L's diapers and in my bra, everywhere. Its just all the hair we didn't lose during pregnancy. I don't think we can do much but wait it out and get a haircut to help hide the thinning hair. Good news is that it will grow back. Bad news is that it'll take awhile and its super stressful in the meantime.
