@Ash: our LO is really gassy-- she gets pretty fussy about the same time every night and magically feels better after either a ton of gas passing or a poopy diaper... I feel so bad for her-- I'm sorry your LO has to go through that too!

JW: why did they discourage the gripe water? we use it-- as well as the mylicon drops though not at the same time-- is there something bad in it?

    honeydew / 7909 posts

@Mrs. Pink: that's always how ours ends too.
Well the kind of gripe water I got has chamomile in it which she discourages. But either way, she didn't recommend it either way. I'm still all for it!

@Ash: hmm maybe I should ask the ped about gripe water at N's appointment next week. We've been giving gripe water and it definitely seems to help him! I figured that was the better alternative over the gas drops.

@lilteacherbee: I have to agree! Which one do you have? I think the mommy's bliss is the one we're going to buy - right now we have the wellements organic gripe water such have chamomile and the other doesn't. I'm not finding anything bad regarding chamomile though.

@NeekieRose: aww poor thing! The week will go fast!

@Ash: Try eating ginger yourself! Bonus is it's also considered lactogenic. DH was fully convinced that I need to eat ginger to help M's tummy issues since it's known to help digestion. I gave it a shot and it seems to be helping. I just add a little to my food.

Ugh, last night got rough again. After our near-perfect start and her being down for 4 hours and eating, she went down right away...for an hour. I rocked her again and put her down again...for 45 minutes. At that point I was afraid I'd fall asleep standing up while rocking her, so...she came back in bed with me. BUT, I figure it was better than the night before, and seeing as it's a big change, it's a step in the right direction...right?

Today has been good, she's been napping like craaaaazy, which I'm assuming she needs after this mess of a week! I've been putting her down drowsy but awake in her swing...which I think might kind of defeat the point, but it's way better than her falling asleep on my lap every time! Again, still a little nervous about tonight--picking DH up at 9:00. The airport is a good 30-40 minutes from us, so we'll probably be home closer to after 10. Hoping she'll sleep in her seat and go down again when we get home!! Fingers crossed.

@lilteacherbee: @Ash: @Mrs. Pink: We have both and have only ever used the mylicon drops...so I guess I'm not much help! Hope the gassys get better soon!

Hmm I guess I'm the odd one out....LO is gassy and fussy from it, but I'd rather alter my diet then give any sort of gripe water/gas drops/medications to her directly. Never occurred to me to use them and weren't suggested by our pedi even when we went specifically for this problem.

@ShootingStar: You are SO smart for bringing the baby carrier to the store. How did you get him into it? I'm so used to keeping my guy in his carseat and popping it on the stroller. But it definitely limits what I can get at the store.

@NeekieRose: Aww! Sweet little girl - I hope the casts do the trick. That would be so hard! You're a rockstar! And amazing for traveling too. Hope you had a safe trip out west and enjoy your visit.

My first week with no help has been good. It's also been challenging. I think I'm realizing how many helpful hands I had around for so long. Since Tuesday he's only really been happy and quiet when he's in my arms, in the Ergo, or on my boob. So when I decided to venture out to the grocery store yesterday, it was a BIG fail. I wanted to go because I had been out before and had success before going to Target, the bank, etc. It helps build confidence too, getting out and about with the baby. But boy did yesterday test me.

He was losing it while we were driving around for a little bit so I thought about going back home, but I really needed to grab a few things. He calmed down when I started to shop and I thought I was golden. Then he started wailing and I was doing my best to grab a few more things and get out of there. But then at those self-check-out things I was losing it as I tried to look up apples, bananas, broccoli and green beans. He was wailing, people were looking at me and looking to see what was going on, I couldn't remember my alphabet and STUPID green beans were under "beans" - not G, for GREEN beans. Not cool for a mom who has a kid who is wailing and won't stop. I know I just have to keep at it to build my confidence, but it was insane. I should have brought the Ergo, my fault. But I'm also not sure how to get him from the carseat to the Ergo when it's cold out.

Also - why is it that when you park far out in the parking lot, to give yourself plenty of room, cars park ALL around you? I could barely get the carseat in the door because a stupid white van parked very close to me.

Highlight of yesterday - it was finally "warm" enough to take a nice 30 minute walk. I felt like a new woman. "Warm" is 40 degrees.

@anbanan15: I think it would be really helpful if you started a thread about your experiences with diet, recipes and resources. And you may think you're going to be talking to yourself, but there may be someone else out there just hoping they find someone who can relate.

@sweetooth: Uggggh, boo for a lame shopping trip. Even with as much as DH is gone traveling, I still haven't ventured out to the grocery store alone... Good for you for sticking with it though! When I went with DH we brought the Ergo, it was also 0 degrees that day. It was a total mess trying to get LO in/out of her carseat and Ergo in the backseat of the car. I'd just wait until it warns up to use it honestly.

Last night was awful, LO started mellllllting down about an hour before we had to go pick up DH...right at her usual "bedtime." I got her calmed down enough to just out her into get car seat. The drive both ways sucked--she really doesn't love the car. She took awhile to get down, and I finally put her in the RnP, only to have her wake up 18 minutes later. Gaaaah! I AM happy because I plopped her in drowsy but awake for a nap today (in the RnP), and aside from my sticking the pacifier in her mouth, she went down...it's been 15 minutes so well see if it lasts (and yes, I'm sitting next to it watching to make site she stats down!).

@ms.janedoe: Yeah, I think it would be so hard to try to remove E from his seat and get him into the Ergo while sitting in the backseat. I always put him in it at home standing up. I have to give you kudos for taking on so much single-mommy time while your husband travels. I think that takes a lot of confidence. If my husband was away for work I don't think I'd be out and about as much. Sorry to hear about the rough trip to/from the airport. But yay for DH being home!

Do you swaddle at night? The halo sleep sack has been working really well for us as a part of our nighttime routine.

This is a response I had wanted to post from a while back. I had commented about nursing bras and gliders...

@ms.janedoe: Thanks for reminding me to dig a little deeper when I went to Target. I bought a few nursing tanks and they have been so nice to use at night. I still try to change into a nursing bra and warmer clothes during the day. But now that I have those tanks it doesn't always happen // Glad you like your glider. I always wonder if I'm missing out by not having one. We just didn't budget for it.

@Brassgiraffe: That's great to hear that your glider has a locking mechanism. Part of why I like the arm chair that I nurse in often is that it doesn't move. Elliott already moves around too much, I can't imagine if the chair moved with him! And that was so smart of you to have some machine washable slipcovers made!

@sweetooth: try putting him in the ergo while still in the car. If you have to, put the ergo on outside then sit in the seat next to the car seat to put babe in. I either do that or put them in the carrier while walking into the store to limit our time in the weather. Oops I see you already discussed this option lol

I'm wondering-- am I the only formula feeding mommy in this group? I've been having some freak outs about the flu this year-- I was told in the hospital that as long as I breastfed (for any length of time) the immunity I had from the flu shot I got in the hospital would carry over to peanut and not wear off... but then I read somewhere that it only counts as long as you're breastfeeding... so once I stopped, she can get ANY number of diseases until she gets the vaccination for it.

Our ped. appt. isn't until Tuesday, but now I'm freaking out. As though I needed 1 more reason to feel guilty and like a horrible mom for not being able to keep up the EP-ing

Does anyone else know how this works? I thought they atleast got some immunity from me for the first 6 months for certain things... but I guess not?

  20. Ash

    honeydew / 7909 posts

@Mrs. Pink: number 1: don't feel like a horrible mother! C has the perfect mommy. Number 2: any amount of breast milk she got helps her. Did you get the flu shot while you were pregnant? (I didn't and now I'm a hermit cuz it freaks me out!)

Omg you guys. Ds ate at 8pm, went to sleep at 1030, up at 330 to eat and slept until 8am. Nothing like this has ever happened.

  21. Mrs. Pink

    GOLD / kiwi / 605 posts

@Ash: no, I didn't think I could get it while I was pregnant and by the time I remembered to bring it up with the doctor I was already in labor (I had an appointment the day before my due date) so they had me wait until I'd already had her. I'm assuming that must be the key for the 6 month immunity? Getting it before they're born?

That sleep is amazing- we've been getting some good sleep- if I can get her down and OUT before her usual fussy time of 11-2 she sleeps through it... 2 days in a row we were asleep before 10:30 and slept straight to almost 9 AM with a little stirring (I catch her before she opens her eyes and starts crying) at 1ish and 4ish to eat... it was wonderful.

  22. Turd Ferguson

    pomegranate / 3160 posts

    Awesome sleep!! That's so great!

We had a full on screaming melt down last night. I have nevvver seen LO like that. For an hour and ten minutes she just...wailed. She was inconsolable. No feeding/changing/swaddling/etc helped. It was the hardest thing ever. Finally, at the end, she just...stopped and was asleep. She screamed herself to sleep. Effff. Totally not sure what's going on as her fussiness and now last night are SO unlike what we've been seeing the previous 8 weeks.

  23. Ash

    honeydew / 7909 posts

@Mrs. Pink: honestly I'm not sure about the 6 month immunity. If you're concerned about the flu, make sure you wash your hands and hers quite often and try to keep her away from crowds. I do know the flu shot while pregnant does carry over to them somewhat. I didn't want to risk something happening by getting it while pregnant though.

@ms.janedoe: *hugs* mama. I hear ya on the screaming. I think she's just going through a phase.

    pomegranate / 3160 posts

@Ash: thanks, lady! I'm hoping so!

The internets say they lose the ability to habituate and fall asleep/sleep through anything around this time, which would I guess explain her total lack of napping like she used to--anywhere...and this her getting super ridiculously overtired, but who knows. I'm just searching for explanations at this point!

  26. Ash

    honeydew / 7909 posts

@ms.janedoe: google has saved my life since being a mom. You follow the wonder weeks... Did you notice excessive sleep after coming out of a leap? Ds was 6 weeks on Thursday and after last night's great sleep, he's only waking up to eat then going back to sleep. Did you see this happen?

  27. Turd Ferguson

    pomegranate / 3160 posts

@Ash: Yep!! I think on this thread even I asked about excessive sleeping after! Enjoy it!

LO has napped for two long stretches...however both have been in the car seat. were just getting settled down now, I tried to feed her and got a decent amount in her (I think) before she got toooo fussy, now I'll see if I can get her down... Were at the inlaws up north so there's all sorts of new people/sights to see so it's been a lot of activity! Terrified for tonight.

  28. Ash

    honeydew / 7909 posts

@ms.janedoe: I think I even responded that it was normal now that you say that. Oy!
We haven't made trips anywhere but I hate having company for that reason. Everything gets out of whack and I don't like that.
P.S. ds is in the car seat sleeping too

    @Ash: haaahhhaa, love it!

I've been paranoid about LO getting enough to eat, I feel like every time it put her to the boob she melts down. She'll get a couple good sucks and call it good. It seems like she's still having enough diapers, but I seriously can't even comprehend HOW because it seems like each feeding session she eats for literally 5 minutes total. Hmm. I'm struggling this week!

For those of you with an ergo... I ordered one yesterday. Do I need the infant insert? He's over the 12lb requirement but obviously under 4mos.

  31. Cara M. 17

    clementine / 825 posts

@ms.janedoe: ahhhh our Harper is going through the same things. The other night she had an hour long meltdown and nothing would help calm her down! It was out of nowhere. She also cries randomly when she's eating or when I'm trying to get her to eat. She will just unlatch and cry and I can't find any sort of pattern to it. I keep wondering what happened to my happy content baby!

  32. Ash

    honeydew / 7909 posts

@Cara M. 17: my first thought is thrush or gas if she screams at the boob. poor pumpkin.

  33. ShootingStar

@Ash: I wouldn't bother. You can roll up a blanket beneath him instead until he can do legs out.

  34. Cara M. 17

    clementine / 825 posts

@Ash: ugh I don't think it's either. Def no thrush and she gets her gas out - never had a problem with it. I think she's just going thru a stage. I'm also still using a shield on one side til it heals so I wonder if that confuses or frustrates her bc she has to change her latch depending on which side she feeds.

  35. Ash

    honeydew / 7909 posts

@ShootingStar: oooo good to know! Thanks!

  36. Turd Ferguson

    pomegranate / 3160 posts

@Cara M. 17: yep, I hear you, lady. Isn't it so freaking trying? I've been just crying with her because there's nothing that help. We're doing the same exact thing feeding wise...I think it's time for her to eat, put her to the boob, and meltdown. Then yeah, come 5ish, all hell breaks loose. I'll be thinking of you tonight!

@Ash: we're still using the infant insert. She's probably right at 12 pounds. Her legs are starting to stick out the side, so I'd probably skip the insert at this point.

  37. mrsmacandcheese

    blogger / clementine / 985 posts

@sweetooth: we just got an ergo and I used it with M yesterday when we were out of town shopping - I wrapped her in the insert in the car and just quickly tried to get her into the carrier outside but I felt like a jerk because it's cold. And I still can't figure out how to tighten and loosen the straps while it's attached to me! They seem so stiff.

@Ash: we got the insert because m's head control isn't solid yet. I think you can just roll up a blanket for the height aspect but the insert keeps her head from flopping around.

I think I need to go back to the LC tomorrow. thrushy feeling is gone but my nipples and areola are mangled. She sucks and clamps SO HARD and I'm bruised and red. She's having an awful time on the right side too - just can't latch deeply. I want to ask about using a shield until I heal but I've got all this anxiety about my nursing problems.

  38. sweetooth

    nectarine / 2705 posts

@MrsDragon: Go to the LC - do it for yourself and for the baby. I finally went this weekend. My pediatrician office is open on weekend for emergency appointments and one of the offices had a LC. I was so glad I went. My nipples and areola on lefty are in SAD shape. It turns out I have a yeast infection and my little guy has thrush. And we are just passing it back and forth to one another. I'm glad my husband pushed me to get in and get checked out. I thought it was just gas that was upsetting my little guy. But I think it's a combo of being an infant, gas, and thrush.

I only wish the LC could have written me a prescription for meds. Because I got meds for E, but now I need an OB appt. So I have to get that in soon because there's no use treating only one of us.

@Cara M. 17: @ms.janedoe: I'm with you guys. My guy has totally changed over the past week. I thought it was a phase, but it turns out it's thrush. Do your LOs have white on the insides of their mouth? Cheeks, tongue, lips?

@Cara M. 17: You describe exactly what I have been experiencing. I'm sorry you're experiencing it, but I'm happy to hear that I'm not alone. E will latch, and feed for 5 minutes, and then just pop off and go NUTS! I can't console him, and he just pops on and off and screams until I go ahead and switch boobs.

  39. sweetooth

    nectarine / 2705 posts

@Ash: I don't use the infant insert, it felt too awkward. My guy was kind of in a little froggy position in utero so he kind of gets back in that position when he's in the ergo. His legs aren't really long enough to pop out the sides.

@MrsDragon: My Ergo was a hand me down so I'm sure that contributes to the straps being a bit more maleable. I bet it will be easier...or maybe just a little less crazy when the temps rise? I know winter is still far from over though...

  40. sweetooth

    nectarine / 2705 posts

@MrsDragon: My LC recommended coconut oil for my nipples/areola. I started to use it yesterday instead of the lanolin. I don't know if it's all in my head, but I think it's helping. I'm far from healed - I think meds are required for that - but it's something. Just trying to help. I know how hard it is being in pain. And the anxiety too. I literally have to tell myself, "I can do this" over and over before he latches on to lefty.
