@Jennimac: My LO is a little older 12 weeks now but we started with 2 oz, and then moved up. My daycare lady just follows his clues. At one point we were doing four 3 oz bottles and then he decided he liked three 4 oz bottles better so thats where we're at now.

@jetsa: when did your LO start daycare? I know she will eat a 4 oz bottle when I'm not there, but I haven't done an all day or majority of the day test every three hours or so.

@Jennimac: LO (8 weeks) eats 4 oz every 2 hours during the day, and then at 9pm and then 4:30am. Sometimes he'll do 3 oz, sometimes he wants 5..I make all his bottles as 4oz though.

    So in 24 hours:
    6:30a
    9a
    12a
    3pm
    6p
    9p
    4:30a

for a grand total of about 25oz a day.

@MrsTiz: thanks! That's really helpful! There are times I wish she just had bottle so I knew exactly what she was getting and other times I really enjoy our breastfeeding experience and I don't want her to have bottles. It's six of one and half a dozen of the other.

@Jennimac: @evansjamie: No problem! When I was pumping I used the medela bottles, but LO would choke a lot so we got some of the Playtex VentAire bottles, so I would pump and then pour it into those.. if your LO's aren't digging bottles, maybe they're getting too much air compared to when they're nursing? LO doesn't seem to get as much air with these bottles. Slow flow nipples, though most of them come with them anyway.

@Jennimac: at 6 weeks. Also Jack doesn't eat the same at daycare as he would with me. With me he'd eat every 60-90 mins., at daycare its every few hours depending on his naps.

I'm back at work this week and Clara is still hating the bottle. I take her to this breastfeeding support group and they weigh her before and after a feed and she takes like 3 ounces, but for my mom who has her this week she is only taking 1.5-2 ounces a feed. So odd. Not sure whether to worry about that or not?! I know for a fact that she's just getting used to the bottles b.c she wouldn't take them very well before this week so maybe she's just adjusting still?! I don't know.

@MrsTiz: mine loves them or the boob. She doesn't care where her food is coming from. we are usin playtex drop ins and she really like those!

@jetsa: that's good to know. I may have to do a bottle boot camp and see how much/often she eats with just bottles. Thanks for the info!

  10. jetsa

    grapefruit / 4663 posts

@Jennimac: bottle boot camp wouldn't work for us bc it's totally different between daycare and home. When anyone watches him at home he eats 1-2 more bottles than daycare....lol silly baby

@jetsa: zomg that was what I was worried about yesterday. I thought she'd be up all night but there was really only one additional wakeup. I mean, she did eat from when I got home until when I went to bed though... Oy.

Holy pumping at work hell. I emailed my boss and our HR person to either set up a meeting or email chain about pumping when I return to work in January. HR guy emails me within an hour, says no problem, email will work better since it's end of year, and that they will work with me regarding finding a place but I need to talk to my boss regarding schedule. My boss calls me and doesn't understand why HR guy needs to be involved. Long story short, my options are the bathroom or some room on the third floor.

I'm shaking. This reminds me why I was looking for another job in the first place, because I feel attacked by my boss (74 year old woman). I remember how much I hate dealing with her sensitive feelings. I hope I find something else soon.

I don't want to pump in the bathroom. I'm afraid my supply will dip because of stress, and yes, I'm stressing already about going back to work. I wish I could just stay home, but if I do that we will be in an extremely tight spot financially.

@Jennimac: LO would literally eat a 10 oz bottle, I'm convinced. She's still scarred from The Famine after she was first born. When we do a bottle feeding we give her 3.5 oz. when we nurse & supplement we do between 1-2 oz, and I produce about 1.5-2 oz every 3 hours. She is gaining weight great, lots of wet diapers, and does some decent stretches of sleep so I know she is getting enough even though she always cries for more.

@evansjamie: I'm so sorry about your work situation. Do you know if your company qualifies as one that would be legally required to give you a place to pump? If so the bathroom is not an option & if the 3rd floor is far away, they will have to allow you extra time!

@daniellemybelle: I work for a small non-profit that employs less than 15 people. I'm not the first person to need to pump here. But my boss is making me feel uncomfortable about the whole situation, and her being upset because I involved HR is what really set me on edge. Throughout my whole pregnancy, I knew this would be a burden and it would be a struggle. But I'm putting out some feelers on other jobs.

    pomelo / 5073 posts

@daniellemybelle: well, she just sucked down a 4 oz bottle. She nursed a little around 4, but I think she was just grazing. I will say it will be nice for her to go to a sitter's because I think it will help get her out of this "eat whenever I want to, even if it was 5 minutes ago" mentality. I'm considering doing a weighed feed to see how much she takes in to get an idea. I have no idea. Do you know from your weighed feed at a lc? Didn't you do this?

@evansjamie: that sucks. This is unacceptable. I hope it gets worked out without anymore problems.

@Jennimac: @daniellemybelle: Going to the third floor isn't a problem to me, it's the feeling that My need to pump is going to be a burden on my boss and will count against me for some reason. The bathroom in question is private, but it's in the middle of our offices and it's a bathroom. I can't exactly be blunt and say, "Hey, would you want to eat where people poop? Then any would you expect me to pump food for my baby there?"

@kjpugs: I'm am beyond happy to report that I am LOVING the original daycare. He has made a friend there, he is so tired from all the interaction, they are very good about communicating with me and he's really liking one of the women there. We are going to keep him there until we are given a reason not to. It's a bonus that we are saving $40 a week too.

    pomelo / 5073 posts

@evansjamie: yeah, that would bug me too. I hope she is accommodating.

@ladybee: I'm glad it worked out!!! Yay!!!!

    cantaloupe / 6669 posts

@evansjamie: That really sucks. I remember your struggles with your boss when you were pregnant. The fact that she is a woman & treating you this way makes me mad! I hope you find something soon.

@Jennimac: We have done 3 weighed feeds - two with an LC & one at a BFing support group. She got 0.5 the first time when my supply sucked. The second time she got 2.5 but it was first morning feeding after 4 hours. Third time it had been 2.5 hours and she got 1.5 oz. When I pump I can get 1.5-2 oz in 3 hours, too, so I'm estimating that's my supply. How much do you get pumping?

  23. singingbee

    pomelo / 5073 posts

@daniellemybelle: I'm not great about pumping, but depending on when she eats and what time of day it is, I can get anywhere from 3-5 oz. I usually pump after she eats, mostly after the first feed in the morning. When did you go in for your weighed feeds? I'm thinking of calling our LC and getting a ball park figure. She is a big girl, 79% for weight, so I know she can eat a lot.

  24. daniellemybelle

    cantaloupe / 6669 posts

@Jennimac: If you can get 3-5 oz after she eats, you have a fantastic supply! And you also respond well to the pump. I'd try pumping in place of nursing once - so give her a bottle next time she's hungry & pumping during or right after. That should be a more accurate reading. We did our weighs with the LC at about 3 weeks and then I think 5 weeks? She came to our house.

@daniellemybelle: hooked up to the pump right now! Going to try a bottle. She is still sleeping! Hallelujah! The most sleep, in a row, we've pretty much had all day and night.

@daniellemybelle: so, LO last nursed around 3:50-4:00 ish. I pumped for 15 minutes, just now, and got 4 oz that we are going to try tonight! Fingers crossed this bottle will fill her up and momma can get some sleep!

@daniellemybelle: well, we started feeding around 8:45. She JUST went down. This was with the routine. Drank the 4 oz, we nursed a little, nursed some more, then took 1 oz of formula. Now the test will be how Long does she sleep. Whew! I'm worn out from wrestling with her. She just fights sleep.

I'm losing my mind here. Every time I put her down she wakes up. I can't cosleep because we are heavy sleepers. I know she is tired. She can't possible be hungry. Right now she lying on her back and I'm patting her tummy lightly and leaning out of sight of her.

@Jennimac: I'm so sorry, and right there with you. This was us tonight too. I gave in & co slept again, which I always feel horrible about. It makes me feel good that she sleeps so well snuggled up to me but I am so worried something will happen. Right now I am up nursing again & I have vowed to myself to not get back in bed with her... So who knows when we'll get to sleep!

Last night was the best night of sleep he's had yet with a 5 hour stretch. Tonight is like having a newborn again with 2.5 hour stretches between feedings. And I go back to work today. Awesome. @daniellemybelle: @Jennimac: I feel your pain. DH needs to adjust his thinking now that I am back to work too. No more throwing anything after midnight on mom. When do they start sleeping more? When can they have Benadryl?

@daniellemybelle: I give you credit. I'm like @Jennimac and am too afraid to cosleep. I'd like to try some nights though. Don't feel bad. Our physical therapist and pediatrician say he needed to be out of the Rock N a Play weeks ago. We did crib transition Friday. He hates it. Moms tired. Matts been in his RNP since 3. Fail.

@ladybee: and @daniellemybelle: she just woke up, so I got a 3 hour stretch which is the longest we've had in a while! I know our problems last night from her being overtired. Here's hoping a new night will be better.

@Jennimac: IHATE when they wake up as soon as you put them down! Giving Hyla her Wub helps that. She likes to comfort suck.

@ladybee: Yeah, he needs to sack up and take some night duties. You guys can be tired together. Hyla gets up every two hours if I put her to bed too early. It's so weird.

@daniellemybelle: I am trying to avoid the co-sleeping too. She's with us for the next hour though since we are going to Huntington to see my FIL in the hospital.

  36. ladybee

    grapefruit / 4079 posts

@evansjamie: we put LO down at 8:30-9:00 and go to bed. He wakes up at about 12 so DH does that one. I've been doing the 3 and 6 but I can't go back to bed till 8 anymore and LO was so off schedule last night.

  37. singingbee

    pomelo / 5073 posts

@evansjamie: she spits it out. I tried. I tried two different paid last night. Sigh. I hope your fil is okay!

@ladybee: I wish DH was here. He is working nights this week. Whenever he is off he told me he would do night time duty when I go back to work. We shall see. This weekend was the first time he got up with her in the morning after she was up all night. He took her and let me sleep another 3 hours. It was so nice. I was thinking he was up with her learning how I feel after a Long night----she fell asleep about 10 minutes after they got into the living room. I was glad she slept, but I was like couldn't he get an idea of what it's like for me.

@ladybee: why no more RNP? I mean what was their reasoning for saying that? Just curious. LO has her naps in the swing generally so I wonder if that's ok? (Poor ped is going to have a LONG visit tomorrow with us curious carlys!)

I second the wubbanub/paci sometimes helping, but moreso in the swing than in the crib. Also I know some babies just don't like back sleeping. Those are the babies who miraculously start sleeping better when they can roll and sleep on their side or even belly. I have a few friends whose babies keep flipping to belly and they eventually had to be ok with it since that's how their LO wanted to sleep! No guarantee that that's the case but keep in mind better sleep could be coming
