@MrsClownfish: No you can't collect unemployment because you're planning on going back to your job and haven't been laid off. I have heard that some companies will lay you off though if you ask so that you can collect unemployment until you come back. And yes, you shouldn't have a problem collecting your short term disability since you aren't taking any paid time off.

I'm so bummed about the lack of mat leave for you guys It makes me feel really lucky to get 12 weeks (some is short term disability and some is paid through my company).
I'm so excited for your new hospital @mrssquirreld! It sounds amazing In regards to birth plans -- I feel like I don't know how to write one or what to include! Anyone feel like sharing theirs?
nectarine / 2522 posts
@MamaMagpie: I'm happy to share what I have so far... When the computer is free. DH is geeking at the moment....
I have to say he deserves some man time though... He just waxed his 36 week pregnant wife!! Hahahaha there is a first time for everything! But atleast now my legs are smooth!
grapefruit / 4663 posts
@MamaMagpie: I'll share mine. If you have any questions, let me know. I have quite a bit of research that went into it. I also used Mrs. High Heels as a starting point (http://www.hellobee.com/2012/12/11/our-birth-plan-for-an-unmedicated-hospital-birth/)
@Mrs squirreld: You are one lucky lady, mine won't even paint my toes
nectarine / 2522 posts
@jetsa: ooh yours looks very official. Mine is just written in a notepad which I just realized is in the car that DH just took to work. Bugger... will post tomorrow. Haha maybe DH just liked inflicting some pain on me!
grapefruit / 4663 posts
@Mrs squirreld: haha, well like I said, I expect it to be a semi-fight but we'll see. I gave it to my dr at my last appt and we have another appt tomorrow and we'll see what she says.

@jetsa: your birth plan looks great! My hospital has a standard birth plan that DH and I filled out and handed back to them. When we call L&D to say we're coming they haul it out of my file to brush up on what our requests are.
A lot of it is basic that I think everyone would want (ie: check a box if you want to use the birthing ball, have a massage, etc). Most of my wishes like an hour skin to skin and rooming with baby are standard practice so the form doesnt even mention it. The only thing I added, bolded, highlighted, was that I'd like DH to announce the gender! Other than that my plan is to have no plan, lol
nectarine / 2522 posts
@jetsa: @char54: Can't wait to hear the genders of your bubs!!!! soooo exciting!
grapefruit / 4663 posts
@Mrs squirreld: Ahh thanks!! I'm getting more excited as the days tick down.
All on sale gap clothes are 1/2 off with GAPSALE and they offer free returns within 45 days, so if you're like me and don't know if its a girl/boy you could more than likely order and know before they have to be returned. My husband's going to kill me

Is anyone else starting to get uncomfortable? My lower ribs are soooo sore... sitting for any period of time sucks.... I find it hard to believe how on earth I am going to get any bigger!
grapefruit / 4663 posts
@Mrs squirreld: yes me. I sit all day at work and its torture, also my feet are huge so even standing doesn't feel good.
pomelo / 5469 posts
My birth plan is pretty much the same as @char54: a tick box page in my notes where you could write other things if you wanted them also. I just put "I'll see how it goes, I'm open to anything" in there.
I'm not particularly uncomfortable at the moment- DH and I went out for an impromptu lunch today and I was saying to him that at times like that, I could easily forget I'm pregnant. Other times I have lots of crazy cramping, like period cramps but pretty strong... there isn't a particular pattern, sometimes they'll be quite sharp but random and sometimes they'll be dull but almost constant. Anyone else getting this?
nectarine / 2522 posts
@illumina: Yeah I get those cramps too. and I have had just in the last two days the "lightening" pains... so hopefully that means he's descending... my ribs would appreciate that! lol
pomelo / 5469 posts
@Mrs squirreld: is that what that means? I must either have a longer torso than I realise *or* baby girl is short, because I haven't felt her near my ribs at all. She doesn't even kick much above my belly button!
apricot / 251 posts
@illumina: @Mrs squirreld: for me, contractions feel like period cramps - most likely your cervix is dilating/thinning out. The "lightening" pains are your cervix saying "OUCH!" haha
apricot / 495 posts
I'm considering working from home more (very grateful I have a job that allows that). When I work from the office I end up so sore and uncomfortable that I can hardly sleep that night. When I work from home I feel pretty good all day and sleep really well. I'm starting to think that my office chair is causing all of my discomfort. I wish I was able to swap it out with another chair but everyone has the same chair here
nectarine / 2522 posts
@illumina: @mrsmoreau: yeah my midwife said you'll start feeling lightening pains when they are descending and your cervix is "getting ready" lol.
@illumina: Do you know if bub is in a anterior or posterior position?
nectarine / 2522 posts
@Meltini: you poor thing! bad chairs suck!! I can't go near our lounge chairs at the moment.. they are just to squishy and they are sooo uncomfortable... I just ordered a birthing yoga ball to sit on, I've heard they are really comfy plus good for labor!
grapefruit / 4663 posts
@Mrs squirreld: @mrsmoreau: @illumina: I'm getting these too. Just random aches and pains from the very top of my belly all the way to very low.
@Meltini: I'm the same way. My office chair is killing me and I already switched it once, I don't think there are anymore to borrow.
pomelo / 5469 posts
@mrsmoreau: interesting!! I was saying to Dh today that because we don't have cervical checks over here, I'll have no idea when I start dilating so no idea how soon things might happen. I feel totally in the dark!
@Mrs squirreld: by anterior/posterior do you mean like spine to spine? I don't really know. Last time I saw the midwife she said her back is down my right side and that whole side is rock hard, so I guess that's where she is. The kicks, though they're not really kicks any more, just stretching I guess... are left of my belly button... though it could be a knee, as whatever keeps sticking out looks bigger and more rounded than a foot. Also, what do lightening pains feel like.. I feel like I have throbbing/mild stabbing going on up there but nothing super sharp like a nerve pain.
@Meltini: you poor thing! Definitely see if you can work from home if possible. Uncomfortable chairs are the worst- I sat on one for a few hours at our antenatal class yesterday and had terrible back pain all afternoon
nectarine / 2522 posts
@illumina: spine to spine would be posterior. Face to spine would be anterior... The preferred delivery position... Although apparently all babies will try to move into this for birth. Your bub sounds pretty much in the same position as mine... Definitely elbows or knees stretching in my sides it's soo funny to see! Occasionally I will feel a kick in the ribs but not as often as the other movements and it usually scares the crap out of me because its so unexpected!! My lightening pains feels like a very sudden sharp pain(like a bolt of pain)... Like someone is stabbing a knife up there... Not very pleasant!!! I'm presuming that's what they are.
persimmon / 1436 posts
@jetsa: that is an amazing-looking plan! I just have things typed out on my iPad notepad app -- time to make it official, like yours!
persimmon / 1436 posts
@jetsa: @Mrs squirreld: @mrsmoreau: @illumina: I haven't gotten any lightning pains yet, but random menstrual-like cramps from time to time. Bub is also head down, back along my right side. The midwife told me last week that she thinks he may be "slightly sunny side up" (posterior) and gave me some stretches/movements to do a couple of times a day to help encourage him to turn into an anterior position.
@meltini: I hope you get to work from home!!!

@strawberrybee: hi August mama! How is life on the other side?! How nice of you to offer the red raspberry leaf tea!!! I just bought four boxes at Whole Foods, though Did you drink it hot, or would you have any tips on how to brew it cold? I know I can brew it hot and then put it in the fridge, but that is time-consuming and I'm feeling lazy about it lol
cantaloupe / 6885 posts
@illumina: I've been having period like cramps that are getting stronger and more frequent over the past few days, but no real set rhythm so I'm hoping it's just B-hicks and baby is getting ready to come out!
@Mrs squirreld: I'm starting to get a bit more uncomfortable...I miss being able to hop out of bed, go for long walks, etc. I still can't complain because I've had an easy pregnancy and been lucky enough to have the summer off work so really I just lie down when I get tired. This weekend will be a challenge with packing for our move next week but I am SO looking forward to getting into our new place and FINALLY setting up the nursery.
The past few days I've had zero appetite which is so unlike me...all I want to eat for meals is cereal. My stomach feels very unsettled, not sure if it's because everything has shifted so much?
persimmon / 1436 posts
@char54: almost moving day!!! Very exciting Sorry to hear your tummy isn't quite right...I hope it feels better soon.
I was watching Harrison Ford on Live! With Kelly & Michael just now and I got really excited hearing my soon-to-arrive son's name so many times! Silly, I know Harrison, Harrison, Harrison!
cantaloupe / 6885 posts
@MamaMagpie: I LOVE the name Harrison! Seriously, everything about it! It would have been our boy name except I already have a little cousin with that name
persimmon / 1436 posts
@char54: awww yay! Thank you! DH and I both really love it, and after a few months of arguing (literally) over a name, I thought we'd never find one we both really liked -- it was a miracle! Most people say they like it, but I've had a few be like "Ohhh...cute." so thank you for being pro-H

@StrawberryBee: I would love to take your RRLT off your hands if you don't mind? Do you have an email or something where I can send my address?
pomelo / 5041 posts
@jetsa: Thanks for sharing your birth plan. I can share mine when I get home. I really liked your format. I agree with others that my hospital does many of the things you mentioned as a norm, so I didn't include them on mine. Hence it's very short. Oh, just thinking about my own, if you do end up with a boy you might write any wishes you have on there about circumcision.
@char54: I am very similar in that I don't want to go in with a very set "plan" because I know that deliveries are never what you expect them to be.
@mrssquirreld: I get uncomfortable most while I sleep or sometimes when driving in the car. At work I find myself sitting in my desk chair with my legs really wide so my belly can sometimes sit between them (if that makes sense) since I can get really achey from sitting so long.
@illumina; @mrssquirreld: @mrsmoreau: @jetsa: @char54: Not many BH for me other than occasionally, but I've been getting those lightening pains for weeks off and on! Man are they painful!
cantaloupe / 6885 posts
@marionberry: My hospital apparently stopped offering circumcisions which really irks me. DH and I were on the fence about what to do and now it seems like we don't even have the choice. We have to be referred to the children's hospital 4 hours away if we want the procedure done which seems a little extreme. We haven't thought much more about it since we don't even know if LO is a boy, but I'm considering asking the next nearest hospital (45 min away) if they do it just to keep our options open. Frustrating!
clementine / 818 posts
@jetsa:
@marionberry: I totally sit with my legs far apart sometimes, my hips start to hurt if I don't, its very unladylike but I'm over it!
@char54: I'm sorry where we live I think pretty much everyone still circumcises, so we can have it done in the hospital or our pediatrician will do it in his office as well, maybe you can check with your pediatrician (also isn't weird trying to plan for that when you don't even know if it's a boy, I think is so strange), I was on the fence about doing it but DH feels like since he is that it makes sense that the baby would be, so they look the same, and yada yada yada, and I don't have that part so I'm not super partial one way or the other.
I'm having a not great day, at work we had to do something out of the norm this morning and go out and canvass businesses to tell them about an event we have coming up, but it was hot, I didn't have access to much water, or a bathroom (I only peed once between 8-12, that's like a pregnancy record for me), and it was hot, now I'm feeling totally exhausted and just plain not great. I suppose I should let this be a reminder to be thankful that I mostly feel good on a regular basis!
grapefruit / 4663 posts
@marionberry: thanks. I actually had it in there with question marks because we are undecided, but my hospital doesn't do them until the next day so I took it out. I told my DH he has the boy parts its his decision, he's leaning towards doing it only because he can't imagine every having to do it at an older age no matter the reason.
grapefruit / 4663 posts
Thanks for all the compliments on my birth plan because we have a doula its one of the first things we did together. She'll use it as her guide to leading us to the birth we want. I've got to say, I'm so jealous of your hospitals doing the things I have listed standard. The only one that could maybe come out would be skin to skin, like I said I semi-expect to have to fight for the birth I want. My hospital has a 35% csection rate.
pomelo / 5041 posts
@jetsa: Oh no good! Our c-section rate is about 20%.
@char54: Can you have it done in a doctor's office? That's where we're doing ours, only because it's cheaper than having it done in a hospital. I was going to do it at my OB's office but didn't think about a pediatrician @mrsstormy - that's good advice. We have one but I didn't ask him that.
@mrsstormy: @jetsa: @char54: It was a pediatrician who told a friend of ours to copy what DH has (as far as circumcising or not) and I think it makes a lot of sense. That's why we decided to do it. I've also heard waiting until a week or two after birth is better for having it done per my breastfeeding book.

Here is my birth plan (copy and pasted)
Baby Marionberry’s Birth Plan
Full Name: Marionberry
Partner’s Full Name: DH
Today’s Date: August 15, 2013
Due Date: September 19, 2013
Doctor’s Name: Our Provider
Hospital Name: Our Hospital
Please Note That I:
□ Have allergies to Septra, Ceclor, and Septocaine as well as the liquid adhesive used for steri-strips.
□ Have a history of spitting internal stitches.
□ Have sometimes needed extra local anesthetic at the dentist to be fully numb.
□ Have Group B Strep??? (to be filled out later)
My planned delivery method is: Vaginal or C-Section (only if breech presentation)
I’d like my husband present before, during, and after labor. Guests may visit during early labor and possibly the first stages of active labor (if I give consent) but should not be present in the room during transition or pushing.
I intend to try to birth naturally, without the use of drugs or an epidural, however I am open to using an epidural if I feel the need, once I am at least 6cm dilated. My husband or I will request it.
After labor I would like to let the cord stop pulsating before it is cut.
If a c-section is necessary, I would like to stay conscious, with my hands left free so I can touch the baby, and would like my partner to hold the baby as soon as possible. It is important to me that the length of time between birth and when I can begin skin-to-skin is as short as possible.
I would like my friends and family members to visit me and the baby no earlier than 3 hours after labor, unless we notify you otherwise.
I’d like my baby’s first bath given in the LDRP room.
We wish to wait and have the baby’s circumcision performed in the office of my OB and NOT done while he is in the hospital.

@marionberry: nice call on the allergies. I didn't even think of that! Should I put that my DH is allergic to shellfish bc they're supposed to give us shrimp in the 'celebration' dinner? ETA: great birth plan as well, you cover c-section which I haven't covered at all.
pomelo / 5041 posts
@jetsa: I guess I was more concerned with c-section since I might have a breech baby. Otherwise I probably would've forgotten it too. You might put a note about your DH's food allergy if you don't get to order the dinner and it just comes without request. It doesn't hurt to be overprepared. I used The Knot's guide just to make sure I wasn't leaving something out that I thought I needed to cover. You might peruse that if you want another reference to review.

@marionberry I never leaked colostrum during my 1st or this pregnancy and I had zero problems breast feeding. I nursed DD exclusively for 6+ months and didn't wean until 18+ months.
The best advice I got about BFing was just to relax it helps your body and baby to do their jobs.
