@gingerbebe: I'm so jealous of your affinity to fried stuff! When I eat anything fried I feel horrendous after! While we were on vacation the local cuisine was a lot of fried stuff. I spent every night curled up on the bed by 8pm because of it.

@Pancakes: Love Pioneer Woman! My mom and I followed her blog before she got the show even. I don't cook a lot but my mom makes her food quite a bit and I've tried a few times. Even though I don't cook much I still love to read her recipes and look at the pics. The one thing I do make a lot of is her iced coffee! In the spring/summer I make a big batch of it every week.

@London Mama: I agree, you've gotta do what's best for you. It's a shame that women can get the shaft for being pregnant, but it is what it is. When I tell my employer I'm pregnant and not coming back, they may get rid of me on he spot. Oh well! Perfect timing for summer

@Littlebit: Yeah that's gotta be frustrating with the name thing. Fortunately DH and I are in agreement but if we weren't it would be a major problem since we're both stubborn! I'd totally pull the "I'm carrying this baby and laboring so I get more say" card!
You should tactfully bring that up!

I just had Indian for lunch and it was delicious. I could seriously have Indian every single day, must be something about it this baby likes! This makes it the third time this week, which considering I'm nowhere near Indian myself, qualifies as a lot.

@Sweetiepie: I like your attitude, I guess a summer off to prepare for baby wouldn't be so bad!

@SweetiePie: I can't actually eat that much fried food. Its just when I'm really sick with morning sickness that it works. If I eat deep fried food when I'm otherwise fine, I feel really ill.

When I AM sick, I eat fried chicken of some variety plus a plain carb, like a bun or rice. Chicken katsu with white rice is a favorite of mine. I think in all honesty, its probably just the combination of protein, fat, and carb that does it but I guess I like the crunch factor too.

I made a really funny cake last night. Its called Creamsicle Cake? It was one of those Pinterest things. You mix 1 box of white cake mix with a 6oz tub of plain nonfat Greek yogurt, and a 1 cup of OJ, with a little orange zest if you want, and bake at 350 for about 30-35 minutes. It makes a dense, moist cake that's almost fat free (220 calories per slice, 9 slices total). DH raved about it and ate 2 slices. I think its the perfect breakfast cake with coffee type deal.

@London mama I too have been loving on the Indian food. We are going tonight and I can't wait!

@gingerbebe never heard of that cake - sounds interesting! I haven't had much of a craving for sweets except fruit. I think I ate almost a whole pineapple the last 2 days. Yum!!

  5. SweetiePie

    honeydew / 7463 posts

@psw27: That's too funny, I'm the same with pineapple! When we were in Panama last week I ate SO MUCH because it was SO GOOD. It was so sweet and fresh and juicy I couldn't get enough. I'd eat a bunch at breakfast and then order a fruit plate at the pool just so I could have more pineapple. Since I've been home I've had some too and its good but not as good
The last week fruit in general has been appealing. For the first time in my adult life I got an orange in our cafeteria and peeled and ate it at my desk - I'm usually not a fan.

@gingerbebe: mmmmm that cake sounds awesome! Maybe I'll make one this weekend!

@psw27: I have been a fruit hound the last 2 weeks. I had been staying away for a while bc it was giving me heartburn. I went through a strawberry phase for about a week, then it was sour fruit (mango, pineapple, green apples) sprinkled with Tajin (chili lime salt). Then randomly last week it was all about melons. I started with cantaloupe and then by the end of the week I NEEDED watermelon. Its not even in season! I'm on my 3rd watermelon now!

  8. psw27

    pomelo / 5220 posts

@sweetiepie last week I was on oranges -- at least one a day, if not 2. I never eat oranges! I am also obsessed with freezing cold apples and bananas... but this week is all about the pineapple!

    @gingerbebe watermelon sounds amazing... yummmmm.

I think this all boils down to the fact I am chronically feeling dehydrated but water is just not that appetizing right now...

Best thing about feeling a little better in the 2nd trimester (MS is only 2-3 days a week now, wahoo!) is getting my grocery bill back on track with meal planning! I still don't have the energy to cook every night like I used to, but cooking at all is an improvement at this point!

The weather was nice enough for me to pull our grill out and get it into shape for the season. We use this guy:

    http://www.walmart.com/ip/Weber-Performer-Charcoal-Grill/1926325

Its the best combination of charcoal taste with easy gas start and has a work surface and coal/utensil storage built right into the guy. We love it.

Anyways, I bring up what kind of grill we have because with charcoal, you have coals that last about 2 hours. Which means I can batch cook several meals and sides in one go without wasting additional fuel. I guess I was inspired by Mrs. Confetti's post about Sunday batch cooking or something, because I was a busy bee last night.

I threw together some turkey burgers that I grilled quickly, then used the remaining coals to slow roast a sirloin roast and 3 big sweet potatoes wrapped in foil. While that was going, I also baked that creamsicle cake and roasted some green beans at the same time (omg, S+P, garlic powder, and olive oil tossed with bag of frozen green beans = HEAVEN). Total time: about 90 minutes.

Add that to the BBQ pulled pork we made in the crockpot (totally hands off) and the pork chops I grilled on Saturday (had to use them up!) and that's a week's worth of food. With salad, baby carrots, some cut fruit, yogurt cups, and cereal bars, that's given us lunches and dinners all week.

I'm still eating McMuffins every morning - if it works, leave it be - but its so nice to have homemade food again. Back when MS was 24/7 and it was freezing out, we were eating out almost every night and DH was living on sandwiches.

I bought some chicken breasts and have some steaks in the freezer that I will thaw and marinade for next week's meals. We're still eating through our stock of frozen veggies so we probably wont be grilling vegetables any time soon, but I'll definitely be foil-roasting some more sweet potatoes (DH's favorite). I think between one big grilling session and one crockpot meal, we'll be set for the week. Maybe I'll do chili in the crockpot and bake some cornbread muffins! DH usually makes me a pot of brown rice in the rice cooker during the week, so that will round out our sides nicely!

Anyone else getting back on track with cooking?

Okay, ladies, can you tell me how this works in your OB office? When I was pregnant with DD, the ultrasound was in the same office as my doctor and I saw him immediately afterward to discuss the results. I know that's not the case everywhere, but...

Today I called the radiology department to schedule my a/s. So I scheduled it and then asked how long it would take the OB to get the results because she said I could schedule a follow-up with her that same day (radiologist and OB are in the same building). The guy I talked to on the phone said it would take 3-5 days to have the radiologist's report...that just seems like a long time to wait to find out if there is something wrong. Is that normal? Does the OB need the report or can she just look at the images herself and see if there is a problem? Apparently there is only one radiologist at this place and they get really backed up and have to send their work out to other labs...

I'm thinking of going ahead and switching OB practices (right now I don't have a co-pay but I will when I switch) even though I like my OB and was planning to see her one more time, but if this is normal then I'll just keep this appt and wait.

Hey all, I've kinda dropped of this thread! I feel like the time between now and the anatomy scan is taking FOREVER! So, I don't have much of anything new to share. Still feeling sick, getting bigger and need to buy maternity clothes, and still low on energy. I'm almost 15 weeks pregnant now so hoping to feel more normal again soon. The house and cooking are still off track and I miss taking care of things around here, but at the same time if I start doing too much I just make myself more sick.

  12. Torchwood

    pomelo / 5607 posts

@Pancakes: Mine is having me do the anatomy scan up the street, then seeing me immediately afterwards to discuss the results. I assume that means she'll have them immediately. It would be weird to have the appointment afterwards if not.

Sorry I've dropped off as well. I've been at the new house every day painting, and there's no internet there except on my phone. I am still reading every day, but only in quick checks, and it's annoying to reply to things on my phone. Doing well though, other than eating insane amounts of sausage (which I usually don't love because it gives me heartburn/gas) and sleeping a TON still. I thought that'd be better by 16 weeks!

So for those of you who have dopplers, do you find the heartbeat in the same spot every time, or does LO move around? Mine is ALWAYS within a half inch radius of the same place. I guess I figured s/he'd be changing position more by now. Also, seems like my uterus is off to the right, where I find the heartbeat as well, (first time mom's, if you haven't tried poking around your belly to feel your uterus after orgasm, you have to do it. It's the weirdest thing), and I always figured it'd be more centered. Not worried about it or anything, just curious about how all this works!

@gingerbebe: This is a super delayed reply, but I am right there with you on people treating you like you're this naive moron when plans for the baby come up in conversation. I KNOW that not every single thing I'd like to do is going to happen. But I'm not going to plan to fail, I'm just planning to take each thing as it happens and modify my plans accordingly. It especially annoys me to get the "you don't know, you'll see when you have kids." For one thing, as a former nanny, I do actually know how I handle some issues. While every kid is different, I have some experience that the average first time mom does not. For another, having kids isn't going to make me suddenly just change everything. And no, SIL, I will NEVER stop to get my 3yo Dunkin Donuts, and buy her 3 covered in frosting and chocolate because she'll only eat the tops off, all because she refused to get ready fast enough and there wasn't time to prepare a real breakfast at home before preschool. I may have to give in occasionally and have my LO eat something that isn't ideal due to time constraints, but that is very different than what she does.

I feel like sometimes people are embarrassed/ashamed of their choices, and are just hoping others will fall short of their standards too, so they can feel better about themselves. And that is incredibly annoying/frustrating.

Anyway, sorry for the rant, it's just been bugging me ever since she said that, and in general since I have a lot of unconventional views on childbirth and parenting, and it seems like NO ONE is just supportive. Everyone has an opinion, and it usually involves me being naive or just plain wrong.

Oh, and spicy fried chicken (tenders, in my case) are the MOST DELICIOUS THING EVER right now. Pretty much all I want to eat if not eating some form of sausage sandwich. Thankfully Nashville has this spicy fried chicken thing that's big, so you can get it at a lot of places these days.

@Pancakes: My OB is in the hospital, and the ultrasound department is also in the hospital. I waited until my next appointment to get the results, but nothing was really said other than "everything is perfect, we need another picture of baby's heart, so here's an ultrasound script for 28 weeks" and that was that.

@Torchwood: my kid moves around so much that it's hard for me to get a HB to register anymore. I'll hear a few thumpthumps of the heartbeat, then a loud screech, and then I find baby on the opposite side of my belly. The nurse couldn't get baby to register on the doppler at the hospital, and the ultrasound tech said it took her awhile to get baby to sit still to get the HB on u/s. So many people keep telling me we will have our hands full :\ I'm already feeling kicks all over. SIT STILL BABY!

  15. Torchwood

    pomelo / 5607 posts

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Ha ha, sounds like they're right, and you will have your hands full! I'm pretty sure LO is moving some, because I feel little thumps every few days, but s/he likes to hang out in the same spot apparently. Though I've only ever checked right before bed, so maybe s/he's just sleeping, and has a favorite spot for that.

  16. Torchwood

    pomelo / 5607 posts

Baby apparently wants to make a liar out of me. DH just wanted to check the hb, and s/he was on the left for the first time ever, and moved enough that it was hard to get a consistent reading. Maybe that means I was right that LO is normally sleeping when I check.

@Boogs: I feel the same ways as you! Sometimes I lurk, but I haven't been around in about a week because I feel like I have nothing to update! Tired, sick still (ugh) and waiting for appointments that take forever to get here!

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I bought a few things for baby when I ordered work maternity pants from Gap and they were have a little sale, and then I bought some diapers when Honest was on Zulily, but I'm surprised! I thought I would be going way overboard on baby clothes, but I'm just going way overboard on maternity clothes! It's a problem.

@Torchwood: sorry you're dealing with everyone having an opinion that is opposite of yours, and feeling the need to share it! I think you're spot on with people justifying their own activity by talking down to people that don't have kids yet.

@gingerbebe: I'm hopeful that my cooking mojo comes back soon! I'm 14w3d and still have waves of nausea and not at all feeling like making food after work. Which is very out of character for me in general because i love cooking and usually find it very relaxing in the evenings - it is part of my down time. I can't wait to do that again, and neither can my poor husband who is either getting fast food or kraft mac n cheese these days!

@LatteLove: I know, the sickness needs to go away already! When is your next appointment? My anatomy scan is my next one and it's a month away still. I ordered maternity clothes online from a few places and lucked out with nothing that worked out. Where have you had luck at or have any links to share of stuff you like? I'm short, so I think that's part why I'm having no luck. And I so miss cooking, my husband tries some days but the smells are so hard for me, but we are also so over takeout.

Thanks for the advice on the name situation everyone. We've calmed down and haven't discussed it since. We are going to keep trying to keep discussions about boy names to a minimum until we find out what the gender is!

I am so excited for all these anatomy scans coming up! Can't wait to find out what everyone is having!

@boogs I haven't been having a ton of maternity clothes success either. I have been shopping online and returning nearly everything. Everything is so long, especially jeans! It is still freezing here so it is hard to shop for spring clothes. I did have luck with Gap work pants, if you are looking for black pants for work. I got these:

    http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=12213&vid=1&pid=761852002

I got a size down and ordered them in ankle. I am 5'4" with longer legs so those work well with flats. I got these in my regular size and they are long but I wear them with heels:

    http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=12213&vid=1&pid=849050002

Both are super super comfortable so far!!

@pancakes I have no idea how my ultrasound is going to work - I wanted to go to a place affiliated with my OBs but they were all booked so I am going to a private place. I am assuming the radiologist will read it right away and then call my OB if there is an issue? That's what my OB said but she didn't know I had to go to the outside place so I'm not sure. It makes me anxious/annoyed a bit. I might email my nurse and ask her how that is going to work.

@gingerbebe you rule! I wish I was organized enough to get all of my cooking prepped for the week. It is supposed to be rainy and gross on Sunday so I would like to get a lot of that stuff done -- we'll see if I am motivated. I wish it was grilling weather here!

@Pancakes: with my ob, depended on what kinda scan it was. The big ones were at a special maternal fetal place. Doc usually came in after tech did the work to review and discuss. Other us were just checking baby and printing a pic. With this pregnancy, going to different maternal fetal and doc hasn't really come in. Guess they just send results to ob.

Anyone not yet feeling connected to baby? I blame it on my exhausted state and craziness of life with twins, but, I still haven't felt really connected. Hope that changes before baby comes.

@tequiero21: I don't feel especially connected, but then again I don't even think about it much. Which is why I'm not even participating in this thread much. @Boogs: Have you tried Kohls? I'm 5' tall and their Oh Baby brand fits me like a glove. Regular clothes don't fit me that well!

I also love tops from Old Navy. I've bought a few new pieces & the only issue I had was with a pair of 5" shorts. I sorely underestimated how short they actually were... but I kept them and sleep in them haha

@Mrs. Jump Rope: this is why I always like to try on dresses! Dresses just fit me weird.

@Weagle: me too.... Maybe that's why I'm just not feeling connected, cuz I know I'm pregnant but don't really have time to think about it so I don't feel pregnant.

    hostess / papaya / 10540 posts

@psw27: Thanks! I don't work, but it's nice to have nicer pants for special occasions.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I'm the same size. I just went there today and they don't carry maternity and told me to shop on a kiosk thing, which was basically looking online so I have to do that. I'm just tired of paying for shipping for things that don't work out, so I was sad they had nothing for me to try on. Will order from their website, though.

What ON tops did you get? Everything I got from them I just returned today because it was SOOO ill fitting and the store had why I bought online.

@tequiero21: That's why I've been hesitant to buy from them, lots of their stuff looks like it wouldn't look good on a real person.

  29. Torchwood

    pomelo / 5607 posts

@Boogs: 5'4" too, and almost all my maternity stuff is from kohl's. Ours has a TINY maternity section, but I was able to find several things I really like. I'll probably shop some online with them.

@tequiero21: I'm not feeling terribly connected, but I think it's just because it doesn't seem real in some ways. I've got a bump, but the little bit of movement I'm feeling is really faint and intermittent, and the heartbeat on the doppler is just noise. It's good to hear, but right now it feels like there's nothing to connect with. Hoping the anatomy scan will help, and feeling real movement.

Someone asked if we'd bought any gear. I haven't, because I'm waiting for my shower(s). I got a TON of stuff for the wedding (probably because my parents insisted we invite every friend they've ever had- and my dad's sunday school teacher drove all the way from Memphis to Nashville (200 miles) to come! We'd never even met them!), and there's a good chance we'll get quite a bit for this too. My family loves spoiling babies/new parents. Plus my cousin just had a baby a couple weeks ago, so she's already said she'll have hand-me-downs..

All that to say we haven't bought anything really (though my grandparents found us a really pretty cedar chest at an estate sale already), but! My mom has. She bought a bouncearoo from a consignment store today, to keep at her house. I'm getting rather concerned as to how often she thinks LO will be at her house. Oh well, we'll work it out. And she got some really cute clothes for her/him too, so can't complain there. AND she's the one person who just asks whether certain things are okay (like what toys, since she knows I don't like plastic) and doesn't give me any crap for it. She may not agree, but she's goes with it.

This is way too long, but last thing. Anyone up for a nursery ideas thread? We're hoping to move next weekend, and once we're settled in I'll be turning my attention to the nursery. I'll be waiting for the shower (again) for a lot of it, but I'll be painting and that sort of thing soon.

Hi, was on the road today. We are out of town for a friend's wedding. I'm settling into the hotel bed while DH works.

As for maternity clothes, so far Target has been my jam. I have a few pieces from Old Navy which I think are fairly priced, but Target has those clearance racks that call my name! I bought another pair of work slacks for $10 today, woot. I also bought a belly band to see if I could make some more work pants work for a little while longer. My biggest problem is tops! I think in a few more weeks I'll have enough of a bump where I can just rock the bulge but for I just look fat right now and don't know how to hide it.

I've heard from some others that Sears has a decent maternity section, but I have no personal experience with them. My petite/short friends have said the Motherhood and Destination Maternity stores, as well as Ann Taylor have good work pants.

Morning sickness kicked my butt last night - I was up until like 1am heaving up Indian food. 16 weeks tomorrow and I'm still going through Zofran. Yeesh. I ate a lot of fat/carb/protein meals today to keep things stable so I feel a little better, but I'm going to need to pace myself with the wedding tomorrow. I told DH I may need to keep a sandwich in my purse or something since I need to snack often!

I don't know that I feel so emotionally connected to the baby yet except for the fact that I'm still getting MS. It irritates me more than anything else, but at least I know the baby is okay. I do find myself talking to the baby when I use the doppler - like "come on, baby, get over here and stop hiding!" We do pray for the baby, so that's a good habit we're trying to form early on, but I'm really looking forward to finding out the gender so we can start calling him or her by their name. I think that will make a bigger connection for me.

For maternity wear, so far I've bought these items and loving them:

And I just saw that Ann Taylor Loft has maternity and right now everything is 40% off! You have to sign up for their email list (but you can always unsubscribe in a few days).

GAP is 40% off right now too.

I also love the selection at Target. The pants are too long on me but the shorts are just right. The tops are always perfect.

@Boogs: I really like these pants from Gap
    http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=6026&vid=1&pid=460890002

I also have the skinny mini, but I found that the elastic is really snug on me, even though it fits everywhere else. I can hardly stand anything with a waistline right now, even an elastic one - does that get better? I'm wearing a lot of loose dresses and tunics with leggings (which is really not my style), but I can hardly handle anything else!

my 16w appointment is April 3 - a few days early. No u/s though so it will probably just be 'how are you doing' and then leave. Then it will be anatomy in May!

@Mrs. Jump Rope: My target has the worst maternity selection! Maybe 5 items and the only pants were yoga pants. Will have to check another store.

@SweetiePie: thanks for sharing about LOFT. I wouldn't have thought to look there for maternity - but since I'm dressed up 6 days a week I will need more!

I'm with you all on the lack of connection. I'm starting to own pregnancy a little more - being comfortable with it, and with people asking me questions about it - but it all feels very separate from the fact that there is a child coming. I don't really think about it all that often and I'm just trusting that changes as things progress.

Had my first full-on "I don't know why I'm crying" meltdown today. Poor DH was so confused, partially because I told him to "fix it" (as in, make me stop crying), but of course he couldn't. But he handled it well. I think before you get pregnant you think those things are exaggerated, but I was full on bawling about NOTHING.

@Torchwood: ugh. Are you feeling better today? I've definitely had those moments

I've got a bridal shower this Saturday & was planning on wearing a real maxi dress but the forecast changed and is supposed to be cooler and rainy. Just in case I tried on a pair of black Bermuda shorts today. They looked AWFUL of me. I was about 18 weeks when I wore them with Chloe but my bump wasn't nearly this large and now the shorts are lumpy and uncomfortable.

Definitely one of them fat/ugly moments. I'm going to stalk the forecast & maybe buy a new pair of black shorts on Thursday. I've got a great polka dot top that works perfectly with them. I need this outfit to work!

@sweetiepie thanks for the links and Loft heads up! I've never bought anything from Loft, do you know how their sizing is compared to gap? I know that is tough to answer since maternity throws another wrench in there

@boogs those gap pants I recommended will definitely be too long on you if you are 5'! I don't know who these stores make these pants for... so long!!

@lattelove @mrs. jump rope my target has the worst maternity section too. I was so disappointed after my friend raved about all the cute stuff she got... Their website annoys me too, so maybe I will try a different store.

@gingerbebe how did the wedding go? I'm sorry you are still sick!

@torchwood hope you are feeling a bit better today!

@mrs. jump rope hope you find something! So jealous you live somewhere where it is shorts weather. It is spitting snow this morning. ugh.

@psw27: Hmmm, I can't say in terms of their maternity (and I actually haven't bought anything from LOFT maternity yet). But their general sizing is pretty similar...maybe even runs a size larger than GAP. I'm just going to choose general sizes, but if you're a 6 in GAP for example, you might be a 4 in LOFT. AT least that has been my experience, everyone is different of course.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Fat days are the worst!
I have a shower in Eastern PA in 2 weeks and its also supposed to be cold-ish (50's?). Showers at this time of the year are so hard to dress for - you don't want to dress like its winter because its actually spring, but its too cold yet for true spring stuff. Add pregnancy to the mix and you're screwed! I really hope it warms up so that I can wear this flowy chiffon maxi dress I have from pre-pregnancy. But I have to wear wedge sandals with it, it would look stupid with closed toe shoes. So if its too cold, I can't wear it I think I'll shop for backup dress.

I started my registry this past weekend. It felt very liberating! Pure coincidence that I met with 2 friends that are new moms (separately) and a friend who is 2 months ahead of me. They were all giving me recommendations and tips and instead of keeping a long list I decided "what the heck, I'll stick it on a registry!" Now I. Can't. Stop. I am obsessed!

Does anyone already know what stroller/travel system they are getting? Veteran moms, what do you have and like?
