@Adira: If that is all he will eat then offer it. but I would offer something else first for sure.

R gets a variety at day care for lunches but at dinner she won't eat variety. This week she is getting hot dogs, turkey deli meat, and chicken nuggets for her meats. Mac n cheese or rice for her carb and then sweet potatoes (but woudn't eat them last night) or fruit or cheese. She eats the same things but I try and split it up over nights. Then I throw in cheese quesdilla but half the time she won't eat it. Wants down and then goes and gets a pouch from the cabinet.

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: Yeah, I definitely try other things first and if he finishes his yogurt and still refuses to touch his other foods, then I thought I'd offer the sausage and carrots.

Actually, Xander's like R! He seems to be willing to eat more of a variety at daycare too (I'm guessing seeing the other kids eat it helps?). I haven't even thought to try hot dogs for Xander... that's silly of me. Do you cut it up into pieces for R when you serve it?

  3. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Adira: It is so frustrating. We went to lunch on Sunday and she wouldn't eat a chicken and cheese roll up, which I know she likes everything in it. Barely ate anything. But if we had gotten her mac n cheese she would have finished the whole bowl. I am ready to say this is what is for dinner, if you don't eat it then you go to bed hungry, but we have a while before we can do that.

We slice it length wise, and then hold it together to slice it all the way down like in a circle, so they are in little half moons when they separate.

  4. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: Yeah, I sometimes want to be like "This is what you're getting - eat it or go to bed hungry!" but I feel like maybe they are still too little for that?? But then I wonder when I'll decide he's NOT too little for that? I always said I wouldn't make special meals for my kid or offer him multiple things for dinner, but here I am, doing just that! When are they old enough to stop?

Thanks for the hot dog tip! That's how I cut up the sausage, so it makes sense to do the same thing with a hot dog! I'll have to try that with Xander and see if he likes it. It would be nice to have another meat he'll eat!

  5. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Adira: I think around 2 they will be able to understand more. At some point we are going to have to cut it out. I am not a short order cook. Although it will be DH and I adjusting our meals to make sure there is something she does like. Right now most of what I eat, she won't touch.

Have you tried kielbasa? I buy the turkey one and R loves it. Sort of like a hot dog.

  6. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: Oooh, haven't tried kielbasa, but that's a good suggestion! I would think if Xander likes sausage, he might like that! I'll have to look for that next time I go shopping.

And I hear you - we would have to change our diet too because we eat soooo much dairy! I'd have to make sure to include a bunch of non-dairy options for Xander too.

    Hi all!

We are vacationing this week in Vermont but today is a bit overcast and muggy, a perfect morning for catching up on the boards! Pete has been in a real stinker of a mood today. I think he woke up tired even though he slept for a full 10.5 hours last night. He now knows the baby sign for bed, so when I say, "Pete do you want to go night night?" he'll put his little hands next to his face to tell me that yes, he wants to go to bed. So cute. Now he is napping and I really hope he wakes up in a better mood.

@Pumuckl: Great news that his levels are at a normal level! I hope the results this week also show the virus is totally out of his system!

@Smurfette: A bite that drew blood! Aww, that is a rough week for R. So hard for these little ones to learn all the social skills we usually take for granted. Hope it heals quickly!

@Adira: I'm so happy for you that Xander is really starting to accept solid finger foods. I think it's probably okay to make the same thing for him each night, and maybe try to put in one new food for variety. Like sausages, carrots, and -blank-. Especially since he eats a bigger variety at daycare.

@Mrs. Blue: Congrats on completing the move! It's so great to hear that you love your neighborhood. Unpacking with one toddler around is hard enough, I cannot imagine trying to do it with two! Definitely a good idea to wait until August when you have some time.

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@QueensBee: and she got a mosquito bite at day care yesterday on her face. She must have scratched it cause she has a huge swollen bump on her face today. I hope people don't think we are causing all these bumps and bruises!
@Adira: Maybe by then he will grow out the dairy issues!

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@QueensBee: We missed you! We were in Vermont a couple weeks ago! How was the ride there?? And that is ADORABLE that Pete knows how to sign for bed! We talked Xander to say "Na na" for "Night night" and he'll now say that when he wants to go to bed. Or he'll grab a bunch of blankets and point at his crib, haha.

@Smurfette: Yes! Fingers crossed!! I'm planning on asking our pediatrician at our 18 month visit for another referral to the allergist so we can get him tested again.

@Adira: I don't see a big deal in feeding them the same things all the time. I'd give him a couple things you know he likes with something else to try. I usually cook up something that is enough for 3-4 days of lunches and dinners that way I don't have to worry if we have leftovers or not to feed him.

@QueensBee: I hope that Pete woke up happier. Having a grumpy toddler is no fun at all. Enjoy the rest of your vacation!

@Smurfette: People who have kids will know that they hurt themselves all time.

When I picked Isaac up today his teacher told me that he is a really good listener. And apparently he really likes reading books there as well. I had to buy him a couple new ones for home this weekend since I'm getting bored of all his books.

  12. QueensBee

    pear / 1718 posts

@Adira: Awe, we totally could have had a Xander/Pete playdate! Maybe next summer!
The drive actually went somewhat well. He slept for the first hour, which was a good start. Then, each time he started to grow fussy, I tossed a distraction back to him. First it was a small fig bar to eat. Then it was his small toy fire engine. And then, his little blue toy car. Each one managed to keep him happy enough that he never actually cried and we did the whole drive without stopping once!

@ALV91711: Thanks! He did wake up happier so we had a nice afternoon! How sweet that Isaac is already getting complimented for being a good listener!

@Smurfette: Pete has a weird bump on his eye too, but towards the nose. It might be an aggressive bug bite. I hope R's heals up quick!

  13. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@ALV91711: That's awesome that Isaac is a good listener and likes books! Xander's not interested in books at the moment.

@QueensBee: That's awesome that your trip went so well!!! When we went up, I had Hubs sit in the back seat to try to entertain Xander, but he still got pretty fussy. I'm impressed you were able to handle it on your own! Pete's a trooper!

@Adira: @Smurfette: They are so finicky at this age. The other night we had salmon, peas, and couscous- Thea likes all of those things. They also had a butter sauce all over them...um, yum. Anyway, she was overtired and super hungry by the time dinner was ready and just melted down in her chair. She was refusing to touch anything. We gave her a few minutes, and then I held her and nursed her for a bit. After she was settled, I fed her on my lap for awhile, and then finally got her back in the chair where she devoured it.
So far it has been my general policy that whats for dinner is it. But I always include something I know she likes. ANd, if she is hungry, she will eat it eventually. Sometimes we just have to try again in a few minutes.

@QueensBee: welcome to VT! The weather this week has been kind of yucky, I"m sorry! Other than this week its been a pretty incredible summer. The end of the week looks great for you, though. Enjoy your vacation! We're headed on vacation next week.

I'm having a pee issue here. We were using 7th Gen diapers at night (cloth during the day). This week she's woken up with wet pjs, sleep sack, sheets, and mattress protector for the past three days. So I went to the store to find an overnight disposable- but they didn't carry them in a size 3, and she is still at least 2 pounds below the weight for size 4s. Was I just at a store with bad selection? I ended up buying a package of huggies, thinking maybe it was just the stupid hippy diapers, but she leaked again this morning. I'm so tired of doing laundry every day!

  15. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Silva: I would go up a size for overnight. I don't go by the weight at all, go by the fit. When she was in size 3's during the day, she woke 4's at night. Now we use 4's for both.

  16. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Silva: I've definitely had to do that a few times - hold Xander on my lap to feed him while he settles down before putting him back in his tray! Knock on wood, but we haven't had any meltdowns since switching to mostly finger foods... though I'm sure they're coming!

My guess is that your store was just out of the size 3s or something. But I think I might try the size 4s even though she doesn't quite hit the minimum weight limit. The bigger size SHOULD help contain all the pee! We use Pampers Baby Dry for our overnights (size 4 when he's usually in size 3s during the day) and they work pretty well for us, but all babies are different! Hope you find something that works!

@Smurfette: You know, I got all cocky about "kids don't have to be expensive" before I had one. I swear to you I spend like an average of 10 bucks a day on random shit. Guess we'll go buy some more diapers! I have 3 packs of size three left, but I can send those to daycare and stop feeding her so she doesn't grow out of them.

  18. Silva

    cantaloupe / 6017 posts

@Adira: I think she was just over tired and over hungry. We'd been trying to hold her off to get her to eat dinner, and probably should have just given her an extra snack. 5:00-6:00 has become my nemesis again, especially as she is transitioning to one nap. She is just DONE.

  19. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Silva: ha!! It is amazing how much crap you need for them. I need to get more toys for R for this age.

  20. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Silva: I hear you! Xander's been taking crappy early naps at daycare and is exhausted by the time I pick him up, so I've been trying to rush through dinner to get him to bed as soon as possible! Sometimes he's just super cranky and impossible to please when he's overtired and hungry!

  21. Silva

@Smurfette: Can I recommend play silks? Thea has a couple that I put in a basket, and the past two days she has spent hours "wearing" them around, shaking them, carrying them around....that plus a stool for climbing, and a bag to put things in, and she's been thrilled.
I've started rotating the toys that I set out for her in our living room, and its helping. Every week or so I move some back into her bedroom, where she plays less frequently, and move new ones into the living room.

  22. Smurfette

@Silva: Just silk scarfs? She loves the stool we have in our closet, and recently loves to put our shoes on and try and walk in them.

  23. Silva

    cantaloupe / 6017 posts

@Smurfette: yes! I ordered some from etsy a while ago. I think just pieces of fabric would work too- its kind of like she's playing dress up, but she can sort of do it herself by draping them, if that makes sense. I tied a few on her this morning like a dress or a cape and she loved it. she wore them during our dance party.
We don't have a ton of space so I try to only get toys she can play with for a long time- open ended stuff. I think these scarves will be around for a while. I was actually looking into dying some of my own, but we'll see..

  24. Silva

    cantaloupe / 6017 posts

@Smurfette: oh man, she's obsessed with shoes too. she likes to try to put them on, and to bring them to me to put on.

  25. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Silva: We have a couple bandana's in the toy basket in the living room but she doesn't play with them. Maybe she would like the scarfs though. I should give her one of mine and see if she likes it first. I have tried putting necklaces on her before and she takes them right off.

@Adira: I was so proud of him! My little travel companion! I also drove a little faster than usual and we made it in 3.5 hours.

@Silva: Thanks! We've actually been loving the cool and comfortable weather! The sun is just coming out where we are now and it's supposed to be sunny until we leave on Monday. So happy!

We are also doing toy rotation and it's working really well. I store the extra toys in the basement so that our family room isn't over run with toys. I find that he seems more engaged with the ten or so toys that are out, because he can actually see them and find the ones that he wants. However, I'm not sure I would have time to deal with organizing the rotation if I weren't off for the summer. We'll see if I can keep at it once school starts in the fall. The silk scarf idea sounds fun!

Haha you are so right. I buy random shit almost every day for him even when I am purposely trying not to. Babies just always need something! I definitely think you should try the bigger diapers. You can always use them eventually, even if they are a bit big now.

@Smurfette: My cheap toy suggestion is one that was recently blogged about by Mrs. Lion.
    http://www.hellobee.com/2014/07/07/learning-materials-for-toddlers-diy-montessori-toy/
I made the pom pom toy out of an old coffee can but the hole is about half the size of hers so it's a bit trickier. Pete has to really push the pom pom through. I wasn't expecting him to be that interested but was a big hit. We had a playdate with an 18mo and 20mo girl last week. All three kids were tussling over the pom pom can! The only issue is that Pete likes to put the pom poms in his mouth so I have to supervise him closely when he's using it.

How is R's bug bite today?

  27. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@QueensBee: It looks a lot better. Pedi's nurse said to come in on Friday if it isn't gone or if it gets worse.

R just doesn't seem into anything like at all. Other then books. She wants to sit in our laps and read, then she gets up and gets another. She also loves blocks, and will carry the bag to use, dumps them out and then has no interest in them. She doesn't seem to really like anything. I don't get it.

  28. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: That's funny that R is so into books now. I remember a while ago she had no interest in them! Now Xander has no interest in books - they have totally swapped!

Xander seems only really interested in blocks (Megabloks) and balls. He likes standing at the top of the stairs and throwing balls down and having me throw them back up to him. Otherwise, he only really seemed into going for walks (in the stroller) and eating crackers.

  29. Smurfette

    GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts

@Adira: Right?! She can't get enough. She gets so excited when we tell her to pick on off the shelf for bedtime. Then the 2nd book is always the same Good night book. R loves the Megabloks too.

  30. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@Smurfette: It's so funny how she's changed in the book department! But that's good!! Xander has no patience for books anymore. He only likes the Open the Barnyard Door book and he just flips through it himself - he doesn't want anyone to actually read it to him.

@QueensBee: I've been thinking that we need to do a toy rotation. Do you have your organized in a certain way, i.e., certain types of toys together, or is each rotation just a collection of various toys?

  33. Silva

    cantaloupe / 6017 posts

@Mrs. Blue: she has a toy shelf in her bedroom, and a small stool in the living room that I set toys on. I just try to move some new toys into the living room, because she plays with those more. I usually do one puzzle/stacking toy, a basket of something (she has a basket of rattles/shakers, a basket of scarves, and a basket of wooden animals), and a doll or stuffed animal. I just rotate when it seems like she is getting bored, or once a week or so.

  34. QueensBee

    pear / 1718 posts

@Smurfette: I think it's so sweet that she loves her books, even though she races through the pages! Let us know if you find a toy that she loves. Sounds like she is a picky customer at this age!

And glad to hear her bite is healing and that the doc is not concerned.

@Mrs. Blue: I'm not super organized or methodical about it but here's a quick overview of our current rotation. (Also, I only started it about a month ago so we've only had one rotation!) I try to have out a few theme baskets of his favorite toys. For example, we have a whole basket of different balls. He knows if he ever wants a ball, to go to that basket! I'll probably keep that out all the time because this boy loves his balls. I also have a basket of "music makers." I rotate which rattles and xylophones and little plastic musical toys go in there. We also have a "parking garage" of cars, trucks, and tractors, which I rotate because we have so many of them. I've been keeping out his wooden blocks and mega blocks but I may put them away for a bit because he doesn't play with them right now. I try to rotate which electronic toys are available and only have one or two out at a time. There is always a pile of 10 books or so available, which naturally get rotated because most of them are library books. We aren't doing Montessori but I like the idea that each toy has a home base, so he knows where to find it and where to return it. Selfishly, it helps me stay sane when I feel like my entire first floor is becoming taken over by toys! And he totally acts like a toy is new all over again when he sees it for the first time in a few weeks!

@Silva: I would go up to size 4's. We started that size in Feb and he just now is hitting the lower weight limit, but size 3's were just too tight on the thighs.

@Adira: @Silva: Overtired, hungry babies are the worst. Tonight I nicely told Isaac that he couldn't pick up his plate and he had a total melt down. That led to an early bath.

@Smurfette: That's awesome that she loves books so much. Isaac does the fast page flipping too even though he wants you to read it to him.

@QueensBee: Library books is such a good idea, I wish we had the time to do that. I'll have to keep this in mind when the cold weather hits and we can't play outside.

@Adira: In about the last week or so Isaac has figured out how to stack his mega blocks and now is totally obsessed. I used to have to build the towers so he could take them apart.

@Smurfette: I hope the bite clears up and you won't have to take her in.

I'm so excited, it looks like we are close to having a yard! We came home today to a big pile of topsoil in the back. Now they just have to spread it and lay the sod. I'm looking forward to being able to play in our own backyard.

  36. Adira

    wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts

@ALV91711: Yes!!! Xander's learned how to stack them too (just the singles - he's not as good at dealing with the multiple sized blocks) and he LOVES it! Though I find out MegaBloks don't stick together well, so he'll build a tower and then try to pick the whole thing up by the top and it just falls apart. Do yours do that?

The children's hospital called yesterday to inform me that B still has parts of the virus in his urine so the changing diapers with gloves, no kisses and no sharing of utensils continues. Suuuucckkkkkssss...I want my slobbery kisses back!

It's been a tough couple of days since B started throwing up Sunday night and proceeded to have diarrhea and was overall just miserable. He's back to his smiling and fun loving self now but both today and yesterday he had one episode of diarrhea at daycare. He's finally starting to eat again though. Poor boy...
