I would just keep offering it. I think I read somewhere it takes 15 exposures to a new food for them to decide if they "like" it. My kid still throws avocado, but I still offer it. And I just pick it up and put it back on the tray, lol. A few times, I've had to actually put the food in her mouth before she's like, "oh. This is good. K i'll eat this"

@Smurfette: I think they will in the toddler room, but they just do finger foods and don't use utensils for all the "infants".
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Adira: He isn't an infant though! At 15M our pedi was already asking if we were working on it.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@blackbird: I have done the same thing. We put the hot dog in her mouth Sat and then she was like oh this is good. And ate the whole thing in two mins.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: Yeah, but he's in the "infant" room until 18 months - 2 years!
@blackbird: @Smurfette: haha, whenever I try to put something into Xander's mouth, he clamps his lips shut and shakes his head!!! Sometimes I can get him to try something by eating it myself and going "Mmmm!" but it doesn't always work!

I found a vegetable that L will eat yesterday! We were in IKEA because they have free lunch for kids on Tuesdays. I had gotten him a side of vegetables with the hope of coaxing him to eat some Broccoli. No dice on the broccoli but he devoured the steamed sugar snap peas!! I just bought some at the grocery store and will try to replicate at home!

@Mrs. High Heels: Thanks for sharing the link to that article. Beautifully written and so true!
Wow, sounds like lots of picky toddlers on these boards! Pete still eats most foods, although he definitely prefers carbs. He loves to try the samples at the farmers' market each weekend which I find hilarious. He even reaches for the stinkiest blue cheese and devours it. I'd say that his current favorite food is watermelon.I think he finds it very refreshing in the summer heat. The only food he really won't eat right now is actually scrambled eggs. It's a bummer because that used to be my go-to dinner for him when I didn't feel like cooking. Maybe he got tired of eating them so much!
Our pediatrician did warn me, however, that he will likely go through a picky phase at some point soon. She assured me that it is expected and she encouraged me not to stress when it happens. It's hard to imagine living off goldfish and cheerios for months but apparently it's totally normal!
I'm a little nervous because I'm embarking on a four hour car ride to Vermont alone with Pete and our dog tomorrow. My plan is this:
8am drop him off at daycare so I can pack car
10am pick up from daycare, change diaper, give a snack
10:15am hit the road and pray that he naps
1:15pm stop for lunch, diaper change, and run around a park
2:15pm get back in the car for the last hour of the drive
I'm sure we'll survive but I'm totally terrified that he's going to scream for most of the trip or take a big poop when we're stuck in traffic. Has anyone else gone on a long car trip alone with a toddler? Any tips?

@travellingbee: Sugar snap peas are a hit here too! Trader Joe's sells them and Pete likes to eat them raw, although I cut the crunchy pods up for him. And I never knew Ikea does free food for kids on Tuesday! That's such a great idea for an outing on a hot day!

@Smurfette: speaking of hot dogs, i gave both my kids a corn dog the other day and they would not eat it... are they my kids?! hot dogs were all i craved while pregnant. yum!

@QueensBee: Oooh, good luck on your trip! I just did a 3 hour drive to Vermont this past weekend!!
My advice would be to have snacks in the car that you can hand him and try to keep some water by his side too (our car seat has a cup holder). And aim for traveling around nap time and pray they sleep well!!! Good luck!!!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@QueensBee: Definitely leave at nap time. We haven't done 4 hours since Christmas. Just keep lots of snacks, water, and toys/books handy to hand back to him. Keep the car moving as much as you can while he is sleeping. If you have to pee, hold it!
@Mrs. High Heels: I feel the same with ice cream. I gave her a bite of a brownie this weekend she spit it out.

@Smurfette: @Adira: Thanks for the tips and luck!! I'll report back tomorrow when we make it!
@Mrs. High Heels: I laughed out loud at those photos! That family is hilarious! But gahhh, I can't imagine my little P the size of those grown men!
Ladies, I am at my wits end with changing diapers, clothes, and taking baths. He puts up such a fuss! Fuss isn't the right word. It's as though his world is about to end. Occasionally I am able to distract him with a book while I change him, which is not easy (reading a picture book while changing a dirty diaper... I need about two more hands!) but even that hasn't worked lately. He literally runs off as soon as he sees me walking towards him with clean clothes and tries to hide, then screams and flails while I try to put on his little shorts and tee shirt. I dread it every time. I hope this is a phase that ends soon. In the meantime, I'm happy to start vacation with DH on Friday so he can deal with it for a week!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Mrs. High Heels: hahaha, that's awesome!!!
@QueensBee: Ugh, Xander is like that for me during diaper changes! It's like it's the END OF THE WORLD!!! I have to practically lean across him to hold him down while I do it!!! I have no advice.
hostess / papaya / 10219 posts
@QueensBee: @Adira: that makes me feel better. I did sit across L today when diapering him. He is ridiculous.
@Mrs. High Heels: I've seen that -cute

@QueensBee: same here with the diaper changes, it's like a little wrestling match every time!

@blackbird: @Smurfette: We have tried to "put the food in her mouth" trick. Not happening. She will thrash and scream and tighten her lips like a vault. She is so chill and never really has tantrums, so it's all so bizarre. I feel like there has to be more to it - it's like more than just being picky, it's like straight up aversion to most food. She won't even touch most foods with her fingers.
@QueensBee: Good luck on your car trip! Our longest car trip has only been an hour, so I'm no help there. We did survive a few plane trips though. I was expecting the worst, but she surprised us! Is he a car napper? I think if he will nap & you stop for some run around time, it won't be bad at all!
@Mrs. High Heels: I've seen that before & love it! Especially the newborn picture in the yellow sweatshirt. So funny.
Tonight Sadie fell asleep sitting up under her blanket. It was the most hilarious thing ever. How do kids sleep in these crazy positions?!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@photojane: OMG!!! I've never seen Xander fall asleep sitting up (besides in a car seat or something), but that sounds hysterical!!!
pear / 1718 posts
@photojane: Thanks! He can usually nap for about an hour in the car but we haven't been on any long trips since last fall. I'm hoping he'll sleep for longer today!
Sadie's reaction to food does seem intense. Poor thing! I can see why it stressed you out. Did your pediatrician have any advice?
She must have looked so adorable sleeping like that! And she must have had a big and exciting day! Did you take a pic?
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@QueensBee: That sounds rough. R is usually ok if we give her a book, toy, shoe, or something to play with.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@photojane: Sadie sounds like how Xander was until very recently. We think he had texture issues, though I'm not sure about it. Even putting food on his tray seemed to upset him and he would try to get rid of it or cry. And we never could just put food in his mouth - he'd clamp his lips shut and fight it! Only recently has he seemed interested in finger foods and actually trying new things, although more often than not, he just ignores it or will throw it on the floor without even trying it!
Holy crap girls - Xander has eaten the daycare provided finger foods ALL WEEK!!! I've been sending his normal pureed lunch with him and they haven't had to use it!!! Ahhh!!! Who is this kid??? And last night he ate turkey meatballs for the first time and LOVED them! Still won't touch pasta or any vegetable that's not a carrot, but I feel like we're making progress!! He even ate a few pieces of watermelon!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Adira: So glad he is coming around to seeing how awesome food is. R used to love turkey meatballs, now, including last night, she won't touch them. She wouldn't eat last night. Finally got her to eat a cheese stick and turkey deli meat.
I saw her top canines are about to break through the gums. DH and I are going to a concert tonight, so I am going to have my sister give her Motrin tonight. It helped her sleep last night.
She bit someone yesterday, she didn't want to share the slide. So we need to work on sharing as well.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: So basically you're saying Xander's interest in food is going to be fairly short lived and then he's going to become super picky like all toddlers??? Great! hahaha
OMG, sorry she bit someone! Xander's teacher just told me that Xander was having trouble "keeping his hands to himself" yesterday and that he pushed some kid and pulled some other kid's hair! Ack!! What is with these kids???

Wow so many picky eaters... Knock on wood - B shows no signs of it just yet. But he eats insane amounts, like nearly the same portion I'm having. I don't know where he puts it...
@photojane: B has often fallen asleep in his crib or in our bed in a sitting position and then just falls over, so funny.
Our trip to the hospital was quite successful. They did an u/s of his organs on Tuesday that came back normal and a major blood draw on Wednesday. Luckily we got dismissed on Tuesday afternoon so we all could sleep at home. We just had to be back the next morning with B without him having had anything to eat. They actually managed to find a good vein on his foot so at least the ca. 15 vials weren't taken from his head. Once he got into a position where he good see what was going on he pretty much calmed down totally and more or less patiently waited for it to end (crazy kid). The blood results for the first time in over 3.5m came back normal! So no more additional tests. So glad! They're also checking whether he still has weirdo virus in his blood and urine but they'll not have results until mid next week. So maybe I'll be able to get rid of the disposable gloves and can get back to getting baby kisses.

@Pumuckl: I'm so glad you got good news!
@Adira: here's hoping Xander had his picky phase early. You dont deserve another one.

And he is sick again Runny nose, cough and teething. It has been a miserable week. He also has a new teacher in his room this week and it has totally thrown him off. It is the teacher that stays until the end of the day and most days this week he has been grumpy when I've picked him up. This kid doesn't like change. She seems really nice, so I'm hoping he warms up next week. I'm really going to miss the last teacher though, she was awesome and Isaac loved her.
@Adira: It is so good to hear that Xander is choosing finger foods over purees. I'm glad that he's figured it out.
@Smurfette: Sorry she bit someone. I hope this phase stops soon.
@Pumuckl: That is an awesome visit, so glad that the results came back normal. It must be so nice to know he doesn't have to go for more tests.
@Adira: Hair pulling, yikes! I hope he doesn't keep doing that.
@photojane: That is so cute she fell asleep sitting, I hope you took a picture.
@QueensBee: Hope you had a successful drive. And enjoy your time away!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Pumuckl: YAY!!! So glad to hear you got good news and the whole hospital experience wasn't nearly as bad as it could've been! Sounds like B was a total trooper!!
@Corduroy: haha, I don't know, Xander's overall a pretty easy baby, so food seems to be our "thing." I'll still be pretty lucky if he's just a picky eater! I'd rather that than sleep issues that others have been going through!
@ALV91711: Yeah! I hope the hair pulling was just a fluke, although he's pulled my hair before, so I'm guessing that's where it's from. He also pulls on his own hair too. I think it's just curiosity, but still, not good!
So sorry to hear Isaac is sick AGAIN! You just can't catch a break.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Pumuckl: Yay!! That is great news.
@ALV91711: R is sick too. Was up for an hour last night coughing off and on before we got her back to sleep. Plus had some weird ear drainage over the weekend. Coupled with a small fever and teething, fun weekend!
R did great with my sister babysitting Friday. She said that R walked around the house like she was looking for us but never cried. Took a long bath and went to sleep like normal. DH and I had so much fun out at concert with friends. I really want to do more date nights. Even if getting up the next morning sucks.
Friday I picked up R and she has a huge bite mark. This kid drew blood. Poor girl. The teacher said that she cried a lot. She wanted to read the biting book multiple times this weekend, so maybe she is starting to get it.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: Glad to hear the date night went well and R did great being with your sister!! Hopefully you'll be able to do more date nights!
OMG, that sucks that she was bit that hard to draw blood!!!! Poor R!

@Adira: It looks so bad. Poo girl. Her teacher said that she feels so bad, two bites and a scratch on her face all in one week.

@Smurfette: Holy cow! A kid drew blood???!!! That's a major bite. Yikes! So sorry. Poor R!

@Mrs. Blue: Right!! I think it will take a week for the marks to go away. How's the move?
blogger / pomelo / 5361 posts
@Smurfette: That's a whole new level of biting that I hope to never experience! The move . . .ah, the move. Everything is in the house at least. The boys' room is unpacked, and we have the living room & dining room at least functional. We know where plates, silverware, and glasses are in the kitchen, and beyond that, it's still a disaster zone. Honestly, I think it will mostly stay a disaster until I finish working in August and have some time to dive in more. We LOVE our neighborhood so far, though!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Mrs. Blue: I can't imagine trying to unpack with 2 boys running around. I am lucky my family all unpacked most of of our stuff since we moved when I was 35 weeks pregnant. And nothing wrong with everything being in boxes till August!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Mrs. Blue: I can't imagine how difficult it must be to move with toddlers! So glad you guys are in your new home though and loving the new neighborhood!
blogger / pomelo / 5361 posts
@Smurfette: @Adira: Thanks! This is our first move since the boys were born, and I can assure you it will be our last one for a good, long while. We were just talking about how hard it is to move with kids, and DH said, "We will absolutely not consider moving again until they are old enough to pack their rooms, carry boxes, and help unpack." So, there you have it!
pomelo / 5621 posts
@Smurfette: Yikes! That is a bad bite. I'm glad we haven't hit this phase. Hopefully she has a better sleep tonight.
@Mrs. Blue: I don't know how you did it with two toddlers under foot. I don't blame you if things stay in boxes until August.
@Adira: I find it funny when they do things to themselves that would hurt such as pulling hair. But I guess they have to learn somehow.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
Do you guys think it's okay to pretty much feed Xander the same thing for dinner every night? He really likes sausage and carrots (yay, a veggie!) and yogurt, but basically refuses everything else I put in front of him. I'm planning on to continue to try different meats and veggies and stuff, but was curious what you guys thought about falling back on the same thing if it's all that works? I'd like to ideally get him to eat mostly finger foods (besides yogurt), and these are the only two things that he currently will eat consistently.
