I have my 1st appt Friday am. I'm 5 weeks today according to LMP. I tried to ask the receptionist what will happen at this appt but she didn't really say. Does it depend on the doctor & how far along you are? I'm clueless!!

@lovelyplum glad your appt went so well! still sending you extra sticky thoughts!

@cmbknyc: @jhd: thank you!!
@jhd: I'm not really sure what happens at normal first appointments, because mine was nothing like I thought it would be. No family history, no pelvic, no long list of dos and don'ts, but an ultrasound. This was the first "official "first appointment that I have been to, but I've been in and out of that office so many times in the last few months, and in particular with this pregnancy, that a "standard" first appointment-especially the blood work to confirm I'm actually pregnant and get to know you better parts-don't really apply in my case.
But I think a usual first appointment involves blood work, sometimes an exam and a Pap smear, and getting a family history. I don't know if they will do everything at 5 weeks, but they might!

@jhd: For my first appointment last time, when I was also about 5 weeks, they didn't do squat. Pee test, do's and don't's, and that's it. Pretty much they seemed to want to make sure I was legit pregnant first, and then they scheduled my first ultrasound. I think mine did less than most do though.

@jhd: At my first prenatal she did a cervix check and discussed do's and don'ts as well as some family history and symptoms. That's about it. The nurse, who had the same doc, told me to always go in with a full bladder from now on because more than likely at every appointment to follow I will have to give it.
eggplant / 11408 posts
@megz06: oh yeah, forgot about the pee test. True story: my hands were slippery from the wipes they give you, and I came within about half an inch of dropping the whole thing in the toilet. I basically had to ram it against my body to catch it and get a grip. Then, of course, I start laughing, which doesn't help matters. Whoops...

I'm scheduled for an appointment Fri with my GP for a blood test to confirm pregnancy. Then I can schedule the first ob appointment. Eeeek!
I second the thanks for what to expect for these first few visits.

I don't have my first appt until 9/20... I'll be 10 weeks by then. So late!! At least then I won't have to wait too long after that to schedule my NT ultrasound, but I was hoping they would get me in earlier.

@megz06: Whoa that is so cool!!! Can't wait to hear the news
@SupernovaJ: I'm late on joining the thread but awesome you saw little jellybean!
@HazelEyes: @lovelyplum: Hurrah for hearing the heartbeat! It's so exciting to hear for the first time. My heart literally jumped when I heard it the first time - best sound ever.
@luckypenny: Seeing the heartbeat is awesome! Excited for your appt on the 30th woot woot
@dandelion: Sounds like you had a great appointment! It's nice to have a plan and that your doc was upfront with you so you know what to expect. Happy for you!
@torchwood: :happy !!!
I just called my OB yesterday and my first appt is scheduled for 9/12 (!!!) - that seems soooooo faaaaaar awaaaaaay... but excited for it! I also have a second appointment with the midwife on 9/27. My practice has 6 OB's that they want you to see throughout pregnancy since any one of them can be on-call plus they have 2 midwives you can see if you want to approach natural childbirth.

Alright, at the recommendation of one of the bees, I've made an appointment with a TN doctor. I actually prefer a midwife, but I figure I can always go to more than one if I wind up not liking this one. I just want to go ahead and see one so I can get an ultrasound relatively soon. My appointment is on 9/9, which is when I'll be exactly 7 weeks. It's only a week after we move, so I think the time will go quickly with being so busy. And hopefully I can get an ultrasound soon after!

@T.H.O.U.: I have an Ultrasound this Thursday the 22nd!
@LovelyPlum: @Torchwood: I'm so glad your appointments went well!
Did any of you take your DH with to your first ultrasound? Mine is coming with... normal?
pomelo / 5607 posts
@jill_a55: DH came with me to all my appointments last time. He's low on sick time, so he won't make it to all of them this time, but definitely any ultrasounds.
apricot / 335 posts
@jill_a55: I'm taking my DH. He said he would be very upset and sad if he missed it. I agree with him. I want him with at every appointment going forward that involves an u/s.

hey guys! Had my first appt today, pretty uneventful - they just took my urine and a million vials of blood, filled out a bunch of paper work, answered a bunch of questions and asked a bunch of questions! Got a bag of goodies from the dr's office (although we only met with a nurse practitioner today) and that was about it! I did take the day off from work since the appt was in the middle of the day so I napped a whole bunch before and after - this fatigue is really killing me!
Congrats on the ladies that already heard the heartbeat - my ultrasound is next week and i'm really hoping i get to hear it too!

@jill_a55: DH went to every single appt with DD. this time he will just come to ultrasounds. He had a job with a more flexible schedule before.
@chibee: hooray for naps!! How many weeks will you be next week?
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@chibee: Congrats on a first appointment. Sounds very typical. I bet you can't wait for the ultrasound.
pear / 1974 posts
@luckypenny: I will be 7w 4d on the day of the ultrasound, but will find out for sure how far along I am that day. The nurse practitioner I saw told me my due date will be April 11 by LMP, and I have April 13 going by O date - so we'll know for sure!
@T.H.O.U.: @megz06: Thank you! I am super excited for the ultrasound! Yesterday's appointment was kind of boring haha

My first appointment is scheduled for 8/30. It was originally supposed to be a fertility consult, but I just called and had it changed to prenatal/confirmation. I'm still gonna see the nurse practitioner.

@chibee: I'm so glad it went well! Hoping for a great u/s for yoi next week!
@jill_a55: DH came with to the first one, and I'm glad he did. It was so sweet to see his reaction to the HB. He didn't come to the one this week, and he won't be able to come to my 9 week one, but he is planning on coming to the one at 12 weeks and definitely at 20 weeks.
clementine / 943 posts
@jill_a55: my husband came to all of the appointments last time around. You get to hear the heartbeat at all of the appts so I know he liked that part. The cool appts are obviously the ultrasound ones, so definitely make sure he's there for that part

137.
I could faint. My hcg went from 34 to 137 in a little under 43 hours. I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry or pee... (most likely the latter, that's the newest symptom around here!)
My first appointment is tentatively set for September 6, but may be moved up based on doctor availability. We're going to have a "viability" appointment and get an ultrasound. Hooray!

@sweetkeight: yay, yay, yay, yay, yay! I wish I could come hug you and jump up and down and go all crazy school girl (for a second, because I get lightheaded easily now). I am so, so excited for you. We are in this for the long haul, girlfriend!

@sweetkeight: Yay!!! So happy for you!!!
Currently grumbly. Had my second blood draw for the 48 hour test, and it *hurt*! I have great veins and have never had any pain past the teensy bit when the needle goes in. This time it really hurt and still does now, over an hour later. My whole elbow is aching.
