April 2014 Mamas!

Had my appointment yesterday. Last week my body hadn't done anything, and the baby was still very high up. Yesterday I was 0cm dialated, 40% effaced, and -2 station, so he said I made tremendous progress in a week.. I asked him if I should be dialiating, and he said that is absolutely no indictation that the baby will come any sooner or later. He DID ask me how much I wanted to be dialted to. He said, "I suppose you want me to say you're at about 3 or 4 right?" I said, "Yes and no! DH would freak out if I was at 4 already!" He said, "I bet because then I'd be sending you to labor and delivery instead of home."

He asked me how much I think the baby will weigh, and I countered by asking him the same thing, lol. He said he is going to estimate between 7 1/2-8 pounds. He said on Friday since I am full term I could go any time and to be ready, especially if my water breaks. We spent the remainder of my appt talking about how wussy men are when they're sick, so its safe to say my doctor rocks. (and he's a man haha)

I'm home for 2 nights by myself now, and DH is freaking out. Luckily he's in the town I will give birth in, but he still feels uneasy about me being home alone. He even asked if I wanted him to pack the car up this morning. I just laughed and told him no. I'm very fortunate my parents are only 15 minutes away (and my dad is retired) so if anything happens they will be there.

This was my big week at work and I'm so glad it's over. I'm in charge of National Honor Society and our school puts on a huge ceremony for all students and parents to induct new members. I don't think I have ever felt so tired in my whole life as I did yesterday!!! I was stressed about it all week but it went pretty well.

And the ladies at school threw me a shower on Wed afternoon. We were gifted so many nice things I was overwhelmed by it all! At this point I'm trying to figure out what essentials we still need. So far all I can think of for sure is a diaper genie. But I know there must be other things

Target currently has a mobile coupon for $20 off when you spend $100 on baby stuff (not including toys or clothes) if anybody else still has lots of shopping to do!

Hope you ladies have a great weekend!!!

@gilmoregirl: hey there-welcome back Hope you're holding up OK. Are you still contracting like crazy, too?

@preggomeggo82: the nursery looks awesome. I'm jealous that you're ready!

@luckypenny: I hope that baby holds out that long for you!

@megz06: how's it going without DH? I hope that it's been quiet on the baby front!

@jhd: congrats on making it through! That must have been really stressful. My big weeks are coming up. This was spring break, which would have been a great time to go into labor, but alas, all I got were false contractions. So now I'm actually hoping to make it past my due date, because the two and a half weeks between now and then are (predictably) the most zoo-y of the whole year. But I guess baby will come when he/she wants!

As for me, my mom and husband have given me strict orders to take it easy this weekend. I felt so off all day yesterday, and there was a big part of me that was convinced it was going to be baby day. But nope, still here, still pregnant. I started a thread asking other ladies what their first labor symptoms were, in case anyone is interested. It was super helpful to read everyone's experiences! Unfortunately, I've already lost my mucous plug, have been contracting for days, have bad period like cramps and back pain, have had diarrhea like crazy for a few days, have a headache, and feel generally off, and still no labor I'm now on the Tylenol/heating pad/hot shower routine, which helps a lot. I guess when it stops helping, we'll know it's showtime!

@LovelyPlum: I hope you can get some good rest this weekend!! That's my plan too. Your thread about labor signs was super helpful. Thanks!

Since my update this am I texted my parents to see if they want to come over and check out our nursery progress and see baby's new clothes. Mom texted back to say they will come & they will bring dinner and I'm supposed to rest until then. I'm excited.

@HazelEyes: AHHHH!!! Yay!!!! I read your story over at other post. Congrats!!

Thanks for everyone that was checking how my 2 days without DH went. Saturday morning my mom and brother came and said they didn't want me to stay home all day by myself so they drove me and my big Saint to my parent's house for the day.

I got home and was really tired that evening. I was feeling a lot of BH contractions, so I decided to take a nap. I slept for an hour, about 8-9p, and then for the first time all pregnancy I actually had to start timing those babies out. They were about 12-20 minutes apart lasting about 10 seconds each. I had some slight back tension with each one, but nothing that hurt. Just uncomfortable. DH had gotten home at 9:30, so he didn't even have time to get excited about his 2 day conference. He just sat on the couch worrying himself to death.

We went to bed at about 10:30, and at 11 one of the BH woke me up. After I breathed through that one, I was able to sleep the rest of the night. I have been having BH contractions off and on since then but nothing as consistent as that night, so it was probably just my body doing a little practice run.

Baby has his feet or knees or something in my ribs, and it hurts. If I lean forward it presses to bad I get a middle/upper backache, so I have to sit arched back. Oh well. Looking forward to my appt on Wednesday. Hoping I have made some progress AND afterwards my mom is treating me to a pedicure so my tootsies look all pretty for delivery day, hehe. DH and his mom think it's going to be this week. They have no reason to think that, but we shall see!

@megz06: oh lady, that does not sound fun. I'm right there with you in the feeling gross and contracting thing, though. I finally fell asleep at 5:00 a.m. this morning after contracting all night long and having a headache that I just couldn't shake. My appointment's in an hour and a half, and I can't wait. I really hope something is going on, because this false labor is driving me nuts. I had a total breakdown this morning, because I'm just so tired and in a bunch of pain. I know it will all be over soon, and that in the end, it doesn't matter, but I'm tired, and this hurts.

Enjoy your pedicure. I need to get on that!

@megz06: @LovelyPlum: awww I'm sorry you ladies are dealing with contractions! That sounds so stressful. I hope things either calm down, or start getting down to business! Good luck at your appointments, I hope the doctors are reassuring! I'm on the flip side--I don't think I've had any contractions. Which makes me nervous since I wonder if I should be having them, or if I'll even know them when they start. Sometimes I feel something like tightening, but it's so short and isn't painful that I can't tell if it's just another baby movement or BH.

I've been really congested this weekend, with lots of sinus pressure/facial pain. In addition to saline spray, steam, hot water compresses, I've been taking half doses of a decongestant because it just makes me nervous to take it, but it keeps lingering. Booo!

And I'm getting nervous about our nursery not being ready yet. The estimated date for our furniture delivery was this week, but they still haven't called me to schedule it. I'm never ordering furniture from PBK or any of their stores again! I have a whole new appreciation for Ikea, at least there you know what you're getting and take it home yourself when you want it...But we did make some progress this weekend on getting ready: we had the apartment professionally cleaned yesterday, and did a big reorganization of the kitchen as well to make some counterspace for bottle stuff! And we took a lesson on how to use our carseat in taxis. Such a funny NYC thing to have to do, since we don't have our own car to learn on! We have one more baby class this week, on infant care and breastfeeding.

@nana87: dude, after what you've been through with that furniture, I really hope that it comes. And I hope that you've gotten some sort of discount or something. What BS! Good news on your classes, though.

So I just got back from the doctor, and I'm at a 2. It seems as though this is some combination of latent labor/irritable uterus, and it's here to stay until the end. I'm just glad I progressed-if I hadn't, I'm pretty sure I would have burst into tears (again). I also got told on no uncertain terms that I need to cut back at work. I have no idea how that's going to work, but I need to take it easier. So, tomorrow is for figuring out how on earth to make that happen. In the meantime, I'll be here, writing a paper. Just don't tell them that

    Hope you all are well!

@SupernovaJ: hooray for last week at work!

@LovelyPlum: Hang in there! I'm debating getting checked tomorrow since my OB is out of town and I'm scared a cervical check might stir things up/progress labor but I also want to know if I've progressed since last week so I could mentally prepare myself for going into labor with another doctor I'll probably just skip it. I hate the nurse practitioner anyways lol

@nana87: I didn't have a single braxton hick or contraction when I was pregnant with DD. It doesn't mean anything. Some women have contractions and are dilated to a 3 or 4 for literally weeks and others are totally closed and 0% effaced at their morning appointment only to give birth later that day. Hang in there But other than your furniture being late, it sounds like you've gotten a lot done! You're way ahead of me lol

Doh...what another pathetic night. I was totally fine and then I was woken up at 1a by a contraction. I was crampy and just generally uncomfortable. I told little man he either better come or knock this crap off, lol. He's already ignoring me

I ate some apple sauce thinking maybe it was just heart burn. It seemed to help as well as some water, but for a while there I felt so crampy and nauseous I thought I was going to hurl. I don't know if the cramping was contractions because I was way too tired to try to time anything, so I ended up going back to bed and slept great the rest of the night, but for about an hour my body was just not happy.

@SupernovaJ: yay for your last week at work!!! I hope it goes quickly & smoothly for you.

@megz06: sorry you had a rough night!

I was wide awake at 4:30 this am hungry and anxious about our snowy forecast. Managed to sleep a few minutes and then it was time to get up. Got ready, packed lunch & got into my car crying because I didn't want to go to work! 10 min later I get the text to say school is closed. came home & got a tiny bit more sleep. I thought I would be able to work until my due date but it's seriously wearing me out physically & emotionally. I get anxious because I don't have enough energy to do my job + get everything ready for baby. We still have shopping left to do. And I have to prepare at least a rough guide for my sub (still don't have anyone lined up!) + prepare & teach daily lessons in the meantime. Sorry for the vent. Being pregnant is just so much harder than I thought it would be!!!

One bit of good news, my OB worked me in for a Fri am appt this week. Think I may take Fri off and try to finish my baby shopping after my appt.

@luckypenny: I think we should! Also, good luck today! Hoping LO stays put until your doctor gets back in town!

@SupernovaJ: hooray for being done on Friday. Enjoy that

@megz06: ugh, the nausea-it's awful. I've had it a bunch, too. I'm glad that you're feeling better, though.

@jhd: thanks for the vibes-it went really smoothly, actually! Good news for this tired Mama. And I 100% hear you on the working until the end dilemma. I had to tell myself last night that I really have to take a good hard listen to what my body is saying, because I can no longer afford to ignore it. If slowing down is in the cards, then show down it is. This stuff is HARD, lady, but you're doing a great job. Take it easy today. And as far as the sub goes, too bad we don't live closer...DH is a full time sub right now who would love to help you out

    And as for me...

I would just like to extoll the virtues of Extra Strength Tylenol and Unisom, because they seriously saved me yesterday. I got 7 hours of sleep last night (!!!!!) and I feel like a new person. A tired, sore, huge person, whose back still feels like it was hit with a bat repeatedly, but a new person nonetheless.

I think yesterday's appointment was actually really helpful. I got some validation that this does actually suck, but my body is doing its job. Also, they gave me an end date-if I'm not in labor by April 16, it's induction time. That was a HUGE relief. Also, the contractions mercifully let up yesterday for a few hours, so I got a break. And, as stressful as it is to cut back, it's really nice to know that I have permission to not kill myself with work. I'm feeling like I'm in a better place mentally and physically today. We'll see how long it lasts, but in the meantime, I'm planning on enjoying it

I had a total b*tch moment yesterday, though. My doctor had an intern with him, and she came into the room first. Normally I don't mind interns at all, but I wasn't entirely prepared for her, and I wasn't exactly in the mood for dealing with new people. She said, "so I understand you're having some cramping?" and I almost bit her head off. I said, "NO. I've been having around the clock contractions for a week." And then she said, "so Dr. ____ will pop his head in in a bit," to which I replied, "Good, because I need to talk to HIM." After that, she seemed to get the message that perhaps this wasn't a normal 38 week visit. Maybe not my finest hour, but I was not about to let anyone dismiss my concerns. Poor lady

@megz06: ugh, that doesn't sound fun at all! sorry you had a rough night!

@jhd: I'm glad you got a snow day!! can you delegate some of the baby-prep stuff to dh? it sounds stressful to try to prep for a sub plus teach on top of that!

@LovelyPlum: whoooooa, 7 hours??? straight?? that's amazing!! and I'm so glad your appointment went well yesterday. for your coursework, does your program let you take incompletes for the semester? I never did that, but tons of people do in my program without any real consequences, they just have to finish their papers by the time they take orals, I think...

I had my weekly bpp/nst yesterday, and though baby was dancing around wonderfully during the nst, my fluid levels dropped again they're still "normal" I guess (down to a 6 from an 8) but it's enough of a drop that now they want me coming again this week. so on Friday I have back-to-back appointments, first with one of the other dr's at my practice (still meeting them all) and then to the hospital for another bpp/nst. I'm pretty discouraged--I've been really good at taking it easy and drinking tons, but I wonder if taking a decongestant this weekend affected the fluid levels...

In more exciting news though, we actually have a delivery date for our pbk furniture! Plus, we ordered a glider off our giggle registry last week with the completion discount--it was supposed to take 6-8 weeks to ship, but amazingly they already scheduled the delivery! so we might actually have a nursery ready by this time next week!

@luckypenny: that's good to know you didn't have any contractions before dd! my doctor keeps asking me and she didn't seem concerned that I wasn't having any, but it's always helpful to hear for other moms that it's normal

I've been contracting, too. It's crazy, cause it's been going on for a couple weeks, yet as of Friday, I'm still only dilated 1cm. So, they really are pointless at this point.

I had a NST today and LO is fine and dandy. The contractions show up on it, but, of course, there's nothing to them. Just a tease, really.

One more prenatal appointment on Friday, and then Monday I'll have this kid! Which is good, because I'm officially very uncomfortable. 6 more days.

@LovelyPlum: thanks for your encouragement i'm SO SO glad to hear you got some good sleep and a break from the contractions. and lol'ing at your reaction to the intern. apparently i gave my best "teacher looking over the top of her glasses" look at our school resource officer when he asked me how i haven't popped yet. this was right after mean old retired lady told me i really looked huge and shouldn't be wearing horizontal stripes.

@nana87: yay for your furniture finally arriving. i'm sorry about the fluid levels and extra nst. i hope you can continue to get good rest this week and don't worry. and you're right about asking DH for help. he has been extra helpful, I just have a super long commute and sometimes I can't even decide what I need in order to be able to delegate. @jhd: You sound like me, and I HAVE a sub lined up. omg. I am so in favor of shutting it down early, if you've got the days. I'm finished on Friday at 39.5 weeks, and I wish I had stopped working a few days sooner - 38.5 or so. I'm sick of trying to leave plans and wrap everything up at the end of every single day. It's too much.

  37. megz06

    apricot / 335 posts

@LovelyPlum: Sometimes the interns can be annoying because they truly play doctor (I requested none to be present at the birth but appts I don't care at this point). I don't think interns should be allowed to come in and play doctor with patients that have a legit concern or issue. I think even at this many weeks along its inappropriate for a routine appt. There are just too many questions that we need to ask and to possibly have our concerns dismissed would screw with our hormones more than they are already screwed with, lol. By the way, Tylenol and Unisom is sounding really good now that you mention it. I've been so good at staying away from pretty much everything but these damn nightly contractions mixed with tossing and turning every half an hour are no fun!

i think the baby's head is way, way down. i'm getting frequent sharp shooting pains in my hoo-ha and it's so unpleasant. stops me in my tracks. also peeing every 5 minutes. i have my 38 week checkup on friday - curious to see if i've made any progress from absolutely nada, zilch, zero...
