@pwnstar: We got thrush too. Had it for 6 weeks! I never built up any kind of stash because it was going on for so long.
Any other 2+ timers feel like they've totally forgotten how to breast feed? I've forgotten feeding cues, how to fix a shallow latch, etc. The only thing I really remember is I liked football hold at the beginning, and I had an oversupply so it help to hand express first sometimes.

@pwnstar: Agree that a good LC is great! Preferably a IBLC because otherwise anyone can call themselves a LC. Thankfully my hospital has a wonderful IBLC.

@T.H.O.U.: Yes! My in-home LC was an IBLC. I still have her in my contacts and will not hesitate to consult her this time around.
@ShootingStar: There are some things I remember, and then other things that I don't! For me, I really needed to start with a cross-cradle hold . . . later on I could do a football hold and then side lying, but I had to get the latch fixed first, and cross-cradle worked best for me to accomplish that.

@ShootingStar: Me! I thought I remembered. Yet somehow we're struggling with a shallow latch that has wreaked havoc on my nipples. And of course she would like to nurse for 2 hrs at a time! Ow ow ow

@pregnantbee: Another option I have recently read about is laid-back nursing . . . because the baby initiates the latch, it's supposed to help with issues like a shallow latch:

@pwnstar: Oooooh, good suggestion. Totally forgot about laying back and now that you reminded me, I remember an LC tried to get me to do this the first time around. Clearly we didn't use the position or I would have remembered better.

@pregnantbee: Popping in...yep, we did laid-back nursing all night long with H and it really did help. She spent the first four weeks sleeping on my chest.

@ShootingStar: yes and no. I just weaned my DD 1 month before I got pregnant, but nursing a toddler is SOOOO different than a newborn! Although I was dealing with a lazy, shallow latch at the end, so maybe things won't be so different?

@LCTBQE: @pregnantbee: @OldpuebloJenn: Thank you for letting me know about the nursing tanks. So it seems mine fits fine and I will keep it and just get used to that little piece of fabric.
@LCTBQE: I was having the same question about the night time nursing bras!! I'd rather continue to sleep in the nude as long as I possibly can and don't see the purpose of the night time bra unless its because I'm leaking like a faucet all over my sheets. But, like @Silva: , the night time bras seems so comfortable. I tried my new target cheapie one on last night and i didn't take it off. I just wore that with my yoga pants for the rest of the night. It was amazing. If I could find a way to make it look discrete under normal clothes, I would wear it during the day, too.
(FYI: sometimes I come home and like take off my work clothes and sit and chill on the couch for a minute. but i thought there was an earthquake and i panicked because i wasn't appropriately dressed enough to run outside. So i went upstairs to put comfy pants on.. why didn't I just put my work pants back on, i don't know. i thought i was going to die. but no one else felt it, and the usgs didn't note it. i think the baby just kicked me so much that i thought it was an earthquake!!!)

Regarding nursing and nipples.... I just visited my friend in the hospital who had her baby on Sunday. Her nipples blew my mind. Now I'm scared.
Question regarding Lanolin nipple cream - does it have to be washed off before baby can breast feed? I went to a breast feeding class and that's what the LC told us. So i purhcased some hippy dippy looking breast cream that I was told is organic and doesn't need to be washed off. But I'd rather be able to use Lanolin if that's what most girls use.
grapefruit / 4717 posts
@agold: Lol baby kicking = earthquake! I think the main reason for wearing a sleep nursing bra or nursing tank is to have something to be able to put pads into to catch any leaks. For me, I'm already large chested and when my milk came in, I was out of control. It felt more secure to wear something for support even when sleeping.
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@pregnantbee: Thanks. That's probably the only reason I would wear it - for leaks. But no big deal because I find that I love it!
cantaloupe / 6017 posts
@agold: I hated lanolin! I used earth mama angel baby and mother love and preferred either of them to lanolin which i found difficult t o use.
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@Silva: Okay, thank you for telling me. I think it is mother love or earth mama that I got. It was like $10 for a little tiny round glass jar with a black lid.
I've heard other Lanolin products are great though, like disposable breast milk leaking pads. (what ever they are called!)
grapefruit / 4717 posts
@agold: You don't have to wash lanolin off. And I alternate bet that and Motherlove which is great stuff and is much more natural.
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@pregnantbee: Thank you for telling me about Lanolin. Glad to know that I can pick that up easily at a local store.
coconut / 8472 posts
@agold: You don't have to wash off lanolin, that LC is nuts. And I think you mean "Lansinoh" breast pads .
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@ShootingStar: Ha! Okay. Glad to know she's nuts. She was pretty intense. And Lansinoh! That's it!!!
apricot / 256 posts
@Silva: is it common to use more than one product? Did you pair them or alternate? I've noticed many mention both products together when talking about what worked but being a FTM I wasn't sure.

I forgot how much I HATE shopping for bras until today. I was going through my nursing bra collection last night and tossed a few and decided I needed a couple more. I went in to be professionally fitted this morning at a local baby/mama boutique and, after trying on a dozen, found two I (reasonably) liked.
I went to check out and paid (with a $20 gift card) and my total had come to $155 which I thought was a lot but didn't say anything. And then I checked my receipt and realized she had charged me for 3 bras instead of the two I was buying. I brought it to her attention and she was like, "that's for the one you're wearing."
Me: "This is the bra I wore into the store today. You don't even sell it here - it's just a regular old bra."
She looked at me confused/suspiciously and I ended up having to pull my tank top straps back and show her my bra and the fact that it is in a color they don't even sell there. So she voided my purchase and re-did it - but didn't give me credit for the $20 gift card I had just used.
So I brought that to her attention and she looked completely confused and irritated and just handed me a $20 bill from the till.
UGH. At least my kids were being incredibly patient and good.

@coopsmama: O.M.G. That story is outrageous! Did she really basically accuse you of trying to walk out with a bra on? That insane. I hope you leave a bad yelp review.
cantaloupe / 6059 posts
@agold: It seemed that way! But then I realized she was totally oblivious about the gift card money, too, so I don't know if she was just having a completely off, clueless day or if she was actually accusing me. It was absurd. I have never seen her working there before but I really think she could use some additional training.
cantaloupe / 6017 posts
@MrsKerch: I was given them both as gifts and just used what I had! I bought earth mama this time because it qualified for my Amazon registry discount. No preference, really!
wonderful clementine / 24134 posts
@coopsmama: Wow that is terrible!
Ive had good luck with the motherhood brand from Kohls.
cantaloupe / 6059 posts
@agold: I probably will!
@T.H.O.U.: Well, I now have those two so combined with the ones I have I'm probably good. And I'm happy with the bras I got - but seriously. Poor treatment.
grapefruit / 4717 posts
@coopsmama: Wow. Just wow. I would have been so pissed that I would have asked for a further discount on the 2 I was actually purchasing. I probably would have wanted to talk to a manager too. But I dunno with kids in tow. I can't believe this terrible experience!
grapefruit / 4045 posts
@pregnantbee: @coopsmama: Yes! A further discount. Or something for free.
pear / 1718 posts
@coopsmama: Insanity!!! I totally agree with @pregnantbee: and @agold: . Not only should you have gotten at least one bra for free, and a discount on everything else, you should have gotten a heart-felt apology. Because that shit is , b-a-n-a-n-a-s!

Just had my membranes sweeped, here is to hoping it does something!! My cervix is still way in the back and only 50% effaced, no changes in two weeks, so not super positive this will get things going but so so hoping it does:).
I forgot how uncomfortable it is btw!
apricot / 442 posts
I like the Motherhood "Reese" nursing bras. They are non-padded so really just for wearing around the house, but I like the size of the straps (almost spaghetti) and the lace bralette detail (which makes it feel hipper and not so nursing bra like). I got them on sale a few weeks back at Macy's.

@coopsmama: Call the manager not to complain so much as to inform them of what happened. Not only will they get the opportunity to train their employee, bet you get a gift card or something for your honesty too...

@agold: My nipples were bloody chapped raw and literally felt like they had been skinned for a good two weeks, then things got way easier. the first two weeks are miserable but it does get better and so much easier!!

@MrsBeluga: I hope the sweep does something for you. They always just made me cramps.

@MrsBeluga: Good luck! I really think a sweep sent me into labor this time. Hope it works for you!

@Silva: @pregnantbee: @ShootingStar: @pwnstar: thank you for your thoughts on the sleep bras, everyone in regular life I used to be a 30C, which is actually a pretty small cup size, and now I'm up to a 32DD. I think I might be able to get by with camisoles with a built-in shelf bra for sleeping if I do leak? I'm going to try, at least. and definitely definitely noted on the thrush warning! @pwnstar @ShootingStar that sounds like a total PITA, hopefully everyone avoids it this go-around.
@Silva: ah, lolz. haven't thought about my IBTC membership in a while, but seriously hoping I can get back in after all of this boob drama--it's encouraging to hear that you're not a *permanent* outcast. too many nice dresses and bikinis that I can't bear to say goodbye to
the breastfeeding and LC conversation is also enlightening/intimidating/educational I feel like I'm going to have to come back and read all of this again after I suss out what the hell kind of situation I have and what it all means. I almost started googling all the different holds, but instead I'm going to get into bed with The Birth Partner and re-read stages of labor--one thing at a time. (@Silva: loving that book, thx again for the recommendation. also, the illustrations are cracking me up).
@agold: baby earthquake=amazing.
@coopsmama: WTF, seriously? when I worked retail back in the day I would have been *horrified* to make that kind of mistake with a customer. I don't usually bother with reviews and all that shit, but I'd call the manager, too, if you have it in you.
@MrsBeluga:
best membrane sweep wishes, lady! that should be a paperless post card.

@LCTBQE: im slightly bigger (32B/C when not pregnant or nursing, 32DD now, though i stopped wearing actual bras most of the time ). I either slept in one of those nursing bras that's like a bralette or in a nursing tank, solely for leakage. But in the first few weeks, i had to change at least once a night - it went back and forth between being from leakage or from postpartum night sweats. I didnt wear actual nursing bras until i went back to work, until then i lived in tanks!
@Glitter: sorry I'm late to the party but huge congrats! She's beautiful!!!!
Also re the car seats, we decided to yet again skip the infant seat and are just putting 2 convertibles in each car. Now to fit them in there, that's the real challenge over here!

@agold: i'm a bit late but lansinoh lanolin has been a LIFE SAVER for me. actually sadly, not having it was the reason i had to quit nursing DS - went on vacation without it (silly me), couldnt find it, and by the time we returned my nipples were literally hanging off the rest of my boob. anyway this time im not going anywhere without it. its been 3 days and im having some nipple soreness but no blisters and the pain is just for the initial few seconds after latching, which i think is normal. it took about 2-3 weeks last time for that initial pain to completely go away.

@MrsBeluga: got my membranes swept last tuesday, then cramping from tuesday night, loss of mucus plug in bits from wed, water broke on saturday, baby on sunday! Hope it works for you and you don't have to endure ANOTHER sweep . they suck!
