Calling all August 2014 Mummas!

    @Claire.Peonies:
    Cravings/aversions: Last week I fantasized about rotisserie chicken for 2 days. I went to the store desperate for it and waited for them to put more out. I got it home all excited and then couldn't eat it. I don't think I will be eating chicken for a while! I haven't had any other serious aversions but more of "nothing sounds good" type feeling at times.

    First Trimester screening: We haven't discussed it yet so I don't know. I will probably end up doing whatever I think will be best for anxiety.

    How much is too much to lift/push etc? We got a new entertainment center delivered today (not put together, in a box) and I had to push it in the house by myself because DH is on a business trip. Now I feel like I overdid it and am worried I might have hurt the baby. I also picked up the dog for like 2 seconds last night to get her into the car and realized that was a bad idea (she is 60 lbs).

    @mrskc: @bakerbee: @T.H.O.U.: Thank you ladies so much for your emergency morning-sickness combat suggestions in my hour of need down in Patagonia! I used them all and they got me through the trip without keeling over (I drank apple juice when I could find it, bought whatever local crackers looked the blandest from the packaging and tried to make myself munch a few every hour, and sucked ice cubes when I came by any from a reliable source). I'm back home and I can't say I really enjoyed the trip (note to future readers--adventure travel during weeks 6-8 of pregnancy is NOT a good idea!) but I never would have forgiven myself if I'd "chickened out" and not gone on the trip I'd planned for and dreamed about for so long. At least now hopefully we'll be able to tell LO one day that he/she trekked around Patagonia through the rain, wind and snow, all from the comfort of mom's queasy tummy.

    While it's amazing to be back home in the US, my morning sickness is still pretty bad. I'm only vomiting every few days but I feel like vomiting constantly and my appetite is terrible. I've tried/am trying EVERYTHING to fight it, but sleep is really my only relief. Yuck. It feels like the time I picked up a flagellate GI parasite in Mexico--constant unrelievable nausea, super unsettled stomach, gas, weakness and no appetite or thirst. Who would have known that early pregnancy feels like a parasite infection!

    Also, the tired! So tired! And the burning, red, hot eyes. The eyes started last week and I didn't realize that was a pregnancy symptom until it became so pronounced today I looked it up and yep, apparently it's another one of the fun things some women experience.

    I have my dating/viability ultrasound this Thursday 1/9, so I'm excited for that. Hopefully everything looks OK!

    I wasn't going to tell work until 13 weeks, but I've decided to tell my boss and close colleagues right after my Thursday u/s because this morning sickness is no joke--I can hardly function and I want them to know the reason. Has anyone else told work yet? Or will you tell them soon?

    @Claire.Peonies: As far as cravings/aversions, I'm in the mostly "nothing sounds good" camp, except for about once a day I have been getting the most powerful insane craving for a giant salad. Seriously--what pregnant lady craves SALAD? Since I got back from Chile on Sunday I've had a big salad every day (my one meal), so at least I'm getting some nutrition in me despite the MS!

    As for first-trimester screenings, I've done a bunch of research and reading and I think we'll be going straight to CVS at 10 weeks and skipping the rest of the screenings except for the blood test for neural tube defects at 15 weeks. I'm 35, my husband is 42. And I want to know the gender as soon as possible!

    @mrs. 64: I'm sure you are fine but I would probably leave leave it for DH in the future. Dh won't even let me vacuum when I'm pregnant because he read something online!

    @mrs. 64: if you did it before you were pregnant it's ok to do while. I routinely carry 10kg bags of sugar, 10l bags of milk/cream & full garbages at work.

    Admittedly, I'm pretty relaxed about those things but my reasoning is I carry LO around all the time and he's 23lbs.

    @chibee: My symptoms have been coming and going too. I think it's normal. Yesterday I felt amazing, but the day before I was miserable and threw up. Then again today I felt like crap. It seems to be a every other day thing for me.

    @BakerBee: we're going to do the blood test that's done between 8-10 weeks and then again at 16 weeks. I haven't talked to my doctor about the NT scan tho. I may do it just so I can get another ultrasound. I had it done for DS. Sorry you're feeling so sick!

    @Claire.Peonies: yeah, we're dong the genetic screening in the first trimester. I think there's another blood test that you do at 16 weeks? I have no big cravings except for salad. Most everything doesn't sound good to me.

    @stratosphere: I'm glad the tips helped! Sorry you're feeling sick. I'm the same way. I've been throwing up about every other day and I get nauseous all throughout the day. When I'm feeling super nauseous, all I want to do is sleep it off too. Oh and I've been craving salad too! It's about the only thing that sounds good to me.

    We went to our OB practice's "orientation" tonight. Wow that was a lot of info. And they sent us home with a huge packet full of stuff to look over. They seem like a very organized practice, even if it is a bit of a baby factory. My first real appointment is Friday

    @mrs. 64: I think it's ok to lift now but prob not when the baby is bigger. I still lifted heavy things tho last time. This time I have a 20+lb girl to lift as well.

    @claire.peonies: I basically want to eat everything and anything! We would do the nt scan just to see the little nugget again and to be prepared for anything that may come up.

    @Mrs.Someone: yay! How exciting!

    Alright ladies, I guess I'm ready to update.

    The appointment yesterday went really fast. Ultrasound showed a growing baby with a strong heartbeat.... but.... the small bleed from last week is significantly larger. They just kept asking if I had any more bleeding (which I haven't). This may be due to the baby aspirin regiment I have been on due to previous losses. He wants to take me off the aspirin to see if it helps the bleed stop growing but there is still a large amount sitting there. The OB was not very encouraging. He said the odds are in our favor still but to go on pelvic rest and we will wait and see and check in on it in two weeks.

    @Mrs.Someone: What fun! Can't wait to hear about your Friday appointment!

    @T.H.O.U.: Oh goodness, I'm so sorry. Just keep reminding yourself that despite him not being encouraging (Gosh doctors can have the worst bedside manner), the odds are in your (and the baby's) favor! I know it's hard with a LO around, but just try to get some rest and stay off your feet. Easier said that done, I realize.

    @kodybear: @beckysue: @chibee: @bakerbee: thanks for the good thoughts, ladies! my appointment this morning went really well! we heard a nice heartbeat and seem to be measuring in line with my other appointments so far. the doctor wasn't at all worried about my previous spotting, so that was very encouraging! my due date was changed to 8/26, which I was expecting (the 8/24 I listed earlier was a guesstimate on my part). I also get to have another ultrasound/appointment on 1/23, which I was totally not expecting and I am so thrilled about - no way would I have been able to wait until 12 weeks.

    @kodybear: @chibee: @beckysue: I hope your appointments go well today!

    @T.H.O.U.: sorry that your OB was discouraging. I will think positive thoughts for you! take care of yourself and get some rest if you can.

    @beckysue: @BakerBee: @chibee: @erind425: thank you ladies!! the appt went perfectly. the baby is exactly 8w3d. everything went well. they did confirm i have a friable cervix and i have a cervical polyp too which also could have led to my spotting. so at least there is a reason for the spotting. the polyp should be okay but they'll keep an eye on it.

    @erind425: glad your appt went well!!

    I don't think I'm showing yet, but I had a student run over to me today, rub my belly and say "congratulations on your baby!!!" Then she said she wondered if it was a boy or maybe twins. I was more than a little taken aback. I don't think I even responded. Thankfully she is not in my class and my kids weren't around at the time. I'm really hoping this was a fluke because I'm not ready to tell work, much less students, for a few more weeks. That baby better stay well hidden!

    @mrs. 64: Weird! A friend's 3.5yo did this to her before they told him about the pregnancy (and he didn't do it when she had m/cs). I really do think that kids have a 6th sense for some of this stuff.

    Thank you everyone for your thoughts! I'm SO happy to report the appointment went great! Baby is measuring ahead at 8 weeks, my due date is 8/20! Got to see the little heart flutter and the heartbeat measured at 162 bpm. I was a total wreck up to the ultrasound and when she said "ok, wanna see the heart??" i burst into tears.
