@T.H.O.U.: My doctor won't try with the doppler until 10 weeks because she doesn't want you to stress if she can't find it. But you might be able to find it around 9 weeks if you're lucky. I'm definitley thinking about buying one!

@T.H.O.U.: thinking of you! It's great news that baby's growing and has a strong heartbeat!

I think I already mentioned this, but I do have a doppler from when I was pregnant with DS so I'll be using it again. I think 8 weeks is a little early to use it. I think around 10 is better but even then you may not find it. I didn't start using it until I was 11-12 weeks.

@kodybear: @beckysue: @chibee: @erind425: Glad all your appointments went well!!!

@T.H.O.U.: i used a doppler with my first lo. it was a life saver. i didn't find the heart beat until 12 weeks. my advice if you decide to get it is to watch a lot of youtube videos. its how i learned some techniques and information about what is the heartbeat and what isn't (because it can be confusing!)

@mrskc: i have this problem too, i've been really into clementines lately. Mostly just any fruit - i can't even really eat crackers because for some odd reason carbs are really unappealing ot me right now.

@pui: I do the exact same thing. I've also recently discovered dipping them in salad dressing. So.Freaking.Delicious.

@T.H.O.U: Potentially TMI, but I suddenly can't digest carrots. They were my go to snack for the first few weeks until I realized they were the root of my intense stomach aches in the middle of the night. Super random, as I've never had those troubles before.

@BakerBee: yay! I was originally 8/24 basing off of my ovulation date but the scan showed yesterday that i was exactly 8 weeks! I'm finding pasta really hard to eat right now - and that's all i ate before! So not at all surprising about you and carrots, our bodies are being so weird right now.

Just wanted to say congratulations from August 2012 mama...and to say if any of you are worried about being pregnant in the summer I think it's the best time to be pregnant! The clothing choices are much easier ...just throw on a dress and go! I say this having to deal with so many layers this week at 21 weeks. Congrats again and happy and healthy pregnancies to you all!

Has your nausea gotten better, worse, or stayed about the same?

I'm 7 weeks and have had nausea for a little over a week. It's off and on all day and worse when I'm hungry, but no where near what I thought it would be. Just wondering if it still might get worse or if this is about what I can expect.

  27. Mrs.Someone

    pomelo / 5228 posts

@mrs. 64: Store bought! They are made by Schar, which so far has great GF products.

So far my nausea is mostly mild. It ramps up a bit when I'm hungry (or sometimes just for fun), but I've never gotten close to vomiting. Definitely better than expected!

you guys all eat so healthy. today i snacked on goldfish and dark chocolate shortbread cookies

@mrs. 64: mine has gotten better. week 6 i felt nauseous every morning but i think it was cause i was drinking coffee. once i quit the coffee i stopped feeling nauseous.

  29. regberadaisy

    GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts

@mrs. 64: my nausea was never bad with M. Typically worse in the evening. I hope this won't remain this case this time because no napping after work with a toddler!

I have crazy sinus pressure and my nose won't stop stop dripping. That combined with a lack of appetite plus mild nausea is no fun.

And I can't believe I have to wait till almost 10 weeks for an u/s!
    2nd time mom's when's your first ultrasound?

Thanks for the snack suggestions! I got some granola bars and baby carrots at the store today. And I may have got some candy too.

@Mrs.Someone: I have to admit I've also been snacking on some choc chip cookies I baked.

@mrs. 64: my nausea seems to be getting worse. I'm almost 9 weeks. Same thing happened with DS. My morning sickness peaked around 10 weeks so I'm hoping I'm almost to the worst of it. I don't have the sensitivity to smells like I had last time tho.

@locavore_mama: I had my first ultrasound at 6w6d but my progesterone was low and I was super worried so doc ordered a viability u/s at my first appt. I think I would have gone crazy if I had to wait until 10 weeks!

  31. stratosphere

    apricot / 329 posts

@mrs. 64: I'm 8 weeks this week and my nausea started before my BFP (though was very very mild then), went away for a week or so, came back faintly for a week (was very controllable just sipping ginger tea), went away for a few more days, then at 6 weeks it hit me hard. I vomited and felt awful, and have felt pretty steadily and gradually worse since. Though I have been able to avoid vomiting for the past few days my nausea has been terrible and almost constant. I'm only peeing three times in 24 hours so I must be dehydrated but can't bring myself to drink... I'm sure hoping this peaks soon and goes away by 12 weeks! I can always hope!

@T.H.O.U.: I'm sorry to hear your doc was frustrating...glad to hear the baby is growing strong! And thank you for that awesome list!

Good luck at your appointment tomorrow, @mrs.someone! I want to get that doppler app but I am worried that I would freak out if I couldn't find the heartbeat!!

@Mrs. 64: I woke up today without much nausea (I 'm a little over ten weeks) so hopefully that means good news for you- although now I'm worried that my symptoms are fading since my boobs are hurting as much either....gaaahh!

@chibee: glad to hear your appt went well. I am starting to get really anxious about mine on Sat too. I am really nervous they won't find the heartbeat with the doppler. My biggest fear is a missed miscarriage....:(

Pardon my ignorance but I know once we hit 12 weeks we are out of the danger zone for miscarriages, right? Does this mean the day I am 12w0d or 13 weeks and out of the 12 weeks? Is 13 weeks when the 2nd trimester starts? I get so confused about the dates!

  33. stratosphere

    apricot / 329 posts

@Apples4Teacher: I think the important thing to note is that 12 weeks is not really a magic number, when you look at actual data, but like many things pregnancy-related is more conventional wisdom based on a simplified take on the data.

I just finished reading a really good book called Expecting Better, written by an economist about pregnancy, and she really examines and deconstructs all of the pregnancy conventional wisdom by going to the actual underlying research, and synthesizing it.

Based on an average across three similar studies, if you have a normal ultrasound at 6 weeks there is an 11% chance of subsequent m/c. If you have an u/s at 7 weeks that shows all normal, subsequent m/c risk is 7%. By 8 weeks the risk is 6%, by 9 weeks it is 3.5%, 10 weeks is 3% and at 11 weeks it has dropped to 2%. So the good news is that risk decreases pretty steadily with every passing week from 6-11. And the biggest jumps in risk reduction actually appear to be from week 6 to 7 and then week 8 to 9.

@stratosphere: Thats cool information. Thanks for sharing. Its nice once you see a heartbeat in there, but there is still so much growing that little baby has to do to really make it.

Glad you guys found that info useful--I sure did! Having specific data like that has really helped calm me and avoid irrational fears through this admittedly sometimes scary process!

We had our dating u/s yesterday (just w an u/s tech, not at my doctor's office) so I'm still waiting on a call from my doctor interpreting the results, but all looked well from what I could tell. We saw the heartbeat, which looked nice and fast. And my husband snapped a pic of the screen right when the tech was doing the crown-rump-length measurement, so I can tell that little bean measured 8w 4d yesterday, a day ahead of what I know the due date to be based on ovulation. So I am leaving my due date alone as I think early scans can shift around and have a 2.5% margin of error anyway as far as those measurements go.

So I take it as everything on track!

Now I need to make my first real prenatal appointment with my doctor.

And I will be telling my boss today at work--my m/s has been awful and I can't wait to tell him so he knows why my productivity hasn't been the best since I got back from vacation this week. And we will finally tell our families today as well! So excited!
