@snowjewelz: Totally agree - this age is so much fun!
So I started pump weaning! I'm going to try to do it slowly over the next month and a half so hopefully I can keep my supply for morning/evening nursing sessions. I want to nurse as long as possible since he's my last. Already I'm not pumping enough for his bottles though - so dipping into my freezer stash!

@Adira:
and anyone else who has weaned....how do I wean? Ryan's 10.5 months and I want to be done nursing around 1. Or at least down to evening and morning nursing by then. Currently he nurses at 3:30a, 6:30a, 9a (or before his morning nap....this seems to be just for comfort though), 1:30 (before afternoon nap...again I feel like it's not that much), 4:30 (ish), and then takes a bottle before bed around 7. I pump at 8:30 and get 5 oz and he gets that the next night. He takes a 5 oz bottle before bed, but during the day doesn't drink as much. E.g., I'm not at home and nanny gave him a bottle before his afternoon nap and he drank 3 oz. I'm guessing this is what he drinks at the breast now.
How do I wean start weaning? Just get rid of the two pre-nap nursing sessions? Start offering cow's milk at 11 months? I have some frozen breastmilk, but it's probably only around 15 bags (75 oz). Start always nursing before bed, knowing that he'll probably be drinking less before bed?
Thanks!

@winniebee: When I weaned Xander, he was in daycare full-time, so I started by weaning bottles and replacing them with sippy cups, and then on the weekend when I would normally nurse, I gave him a sippy instead, just like daycare does. I removed one session a week until we were down to one a day (we weren't nursing at night anymore at that point already). There were a couple times when he definitely wanted to nurse, pulling at my shirt, but I just said no and gave him his sippy. He wasn't too crazy into nursing and we didn't nurse to sleep, so weaning him wasn't too hard.
I'm actually really nervous about weaning Logan. He naps okay at daycare, but definitely naps better at home and has to be nursed to sleep! I have no idea how we're going to do it. I'm planning on keeping the morning and evening session (I nurse him before I go to work and I nurse him to bed) and cut out the day sessions. I think getting him down to naps will be harder, but hopefully not impossible...

@snowjewelz: Totally agree! E is so fun right now, he gives the best hugs and is sooo funny, super ticklish and even 'fake' laughs when I tickle his toes. Last night he thought it was hilarious to knock down blocks everytime I stacked them up, and also to pretend 'bite' on the chair arms so we would say NO. (we already have teeth marks on them!)
@winniebee: Same... I want to be down to morning/night at 1 or shortly after.
@Adira: How often are you pumping now? I do twice a day and should go to once a day next week (so have a month to slowly work down to not pumping at all) I'm just scared to do it! (and I like my 2 breaks a day!). I pump at 10 and 2:30 now, and thinking I could just go to 12 only and hopefully my first few days don't suck too bad??
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@josina: I'm pumping 3 times a day (I was doing 4 because I'd pump after nursing in the morning before work). I'm going to do 3 times/day for another two weeks and then go down to 2 times/day and then 1 and then NONE!
When I was pump weaning Xander, I did 10:00 and 3:00 at one point. I reduced the time of the pumps by a few minutes each day and then went to just pumping at noon. It was fine!
pomegranate / 3973 posts
@Adira: That sounds like a plan... I pump 15 min. now, I think I'll go to 10 min. (or less) for a week and then hopefully move to 12:00.

loving all of this weaning advice! i'm planning on only nursing mornings and evenings and cutting out my pumping sessions. right now i pump twice. 10:30 and 3:30 and would love to not pump or wash pump parts any more!

@winniebee: I have weaned D and she is fully on sippy cups of WCM. I first started phasing out during the day feeds, keeping her morning and evening feed. After that, I then removed the evening feed. Just the other day I stopped the morning feed and replaced with a sippy cup of milk. It was super easy.

@banddmommy: your weaning story gives me hope
@winnibee: @adira: @josina: K was super easy, but she was daycare full-time. We went to sippy-cups of breastmilk around 10 months, which she was fine with, and then as my frozen stash ran low/out, gradually replaced those with WCM or almond milk. she never seemed to care. i can't even remember which (morning or night) that i weaned first, but i did them maybe a week or two apart. for pumping, i was down to 2 pumps per day by like 10 months, then around 11-12 months, i just cut out each one of those one week at a time (the afternoon one first).
i'm worried about weaning E just because she has never really taken to anything else strongly. she will drink milk (breastmilk or WCM) or water out of a straw cup (no bottles anymore!), but not a ton. when i was gone for a weekend in early october, she drank like 10-15oz of breastmilk per day from the cup. but she still slept through the night so apparently it was enough! i'm probably just worrying for no good reason.
i'm feeling pretty ready to wean, but then i feel guilty (dumb) because i hadn't wanted to wean K when we did...so there's a little bit of "poor second kid" feelings. But then I was so happy we weaned once it was done, so maybe i just know better this time how great it is to get my body back part of me wants to nurse at least 1x/day through the winter for immunity benefits, but.....i'm thinking it's not really worth it. i'll just wash her hands an extra time per day. haha

@KayKay: At first I felt guilty about weaning her before a year. But my supply sucked and BF hurt because I was pregnant. And selfishly, I want to wear a regular bra for a few months. I"ll be back to nursing in March again, so I wanted my boobs to myself for a little bit.

@winniebee: It helped that she started at her sitters and had to take her straw cup, I just tried really hard to do the same rouitne during the weekends..over the past few months it is routine now, she cut the morning session her self , I think I'm drying up..lol
I still nurse her right before bed! I selfishly LOVE IT...lol

Wait they can drink WCM now?! I have more formula left but if we run out before she turns 1 (which is really only a month out), I don't have to buy more?!
eggplant / 11861 posts
@snowjewelz: I agree 100% G is so fun, and I love this stage!!!!
eggplant / 11861 posts
@Adira: I still pretty mush nurse G to bed at night, I keep saying I will space the time out, but now it is our only season and works so well for us ....lol
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@FaithFertility: With Xander, I was really firm on not getting into the habit of nursing to sleep, but Logan is my last baby and I love nursing him to sleep and getting those snuggles at the end of the day!

I wish I could start pump weaning, but only have about 30 ounces frozen so will need to continue for a while. As it is I've started giving her an ounce of wcm in each 5 ounce bottle. She doesn't actually drink all 20 ounces anymore so we've talked about decreasing her bottle size or number. But knowing how tiny she is it's rather offer it just in case.
pear / 1961 posts
@snowjewelz: you can go by your doc's recommendation, if you're more comfortable. i just started introducing e to WCM in case it took awhile for her to like it/get the hang of having it. i didn't want to switch her totally and freak her out i would say she maybe drinks like 2-3oz of it every couple days, so it's mostly just like a "solid" that is in addition to her BM.
pomelo / 5660 posts
@snowjewelz: I did WCM because D refused formula and I was drying up because I was pregnant.

@BandDmommy: Do you use organic? Whole Milk?!
Brand?! ...lol this is new territory!
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
@FaithFertility: I buy horizon organic. Mostly because organic actually lasts longer than non.
Ryan skipped his 4pm feeding with an extra big snack and then only took 4 is before bed. So I'm thinking maybe just start offering whole milk with 4 pm snack and see if we can get rid of that session. It's 730 and I'm about to pump and haven't nursed or pumped since 1!
The problem becomes when we aren't home at 4pm and I can't just whip out the boob but I guess that's a separate issue!
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
@BandDmommy: woah. Tyler barely drinks milk anymore. A half gallon lasts a few weeks. But I was buying 2% and now Ty will just have to drink whole milk again bc I'm not buying 3 types (my husband drinks skim).
eggplant / 11861 posts
@BandDmommy: Wow, yeah I HATE milk so we only have 2% 1/2 gallons at a time and that lasts a week!

Eep, all of this weaning talk!! I've thought about it a bit, but H still isn't eating a TON of solids. He eats, but I think a lot of it goes on the floor (ie to the dog). And our ped told us no wcm until 1 year, so I've been a bit wary of starting it. He also still nurses to sleep, so I'm worried he is going to be nursing forever I don't want to start weaning him until he is eating more solids. But maybe weaning will force him to eat more?
Gah, how are these kiddos so old already?!
Anyone else nervous about daylight savings time this weekend?? haha. I'm excited for Halloween, though!

@theotherstark: Haven't thought about it....lol I guess I am in the it is what it is state of mind!!!
I have no idea how they got so big!!!! I was reading thenokd posts in this thread and started to cry!

@theotherstark: my husband drinks a lot of milk too! We need a 2nd fridge.

@BandDmommy: Our second fridge (in the basement) is one of the best purchases I've ever made.

I've dropped down from 6 nursing sessions to 4 a day in the past month. J was never going to refuse to nurse - but he's not complaining either. Now he's nursing morning, before each nap and at bedtime. I feel like those are going to be harder to get rid of. We don't nurse to sleep but he's pretty snoozy when I put him down and it's a nice routine for both of us. Sometimes our nursing sessions feel like the only peaceful part of my day
I've cut down to 3 pumps a day on my work days (he doesn't nurse at all those days). That means I only bring home 10-15 oz so I'm glad there's so much in the freezer! I gave him some breastmilk in a straw cup today and he chugged it, so that was encouraging!

I'm feeling a little frozen in time. This little illness has slowed us down and K is pretty cranky often. We are FF, so I can't really speak to weaning. But I do think we are on our last can of formula. She's 11.5 months this weekend and getting bottles morning and night and formula in a cup at daycare. I'll stop taking her formula to daycare for sure next week and we are going to decrease the volume of her morning and night bottles. She's often not finishing the night one anyway (taking 4oz or less).
She's vocal but not verbal. Lots of yelling and babbling still. I'm not surprised. Physical milestones seem to be her thing. C relied heavily on sign language from 12 - 20 months.
nectarine / 2210 posts
K finally decided to start waving, the first of any hand motions she's picked up. She was doing it last night, although I thought it was a fluke, but then she did it again when I dropped her off at daycare.

@Miss Ariel: So cute!
Bah, the skipped 4:30 feeding may have backfired. R went down at his normal 7:30 but then woke at 1:30 and 4:30 (instead of just at 3). I'm not sure if it's b/c he is under the weather or what (big brother has a cold).
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
I forgot to ask the doctor about WCM last time! I am sure she can have some if she has diary in other forms anyway, but she's been drinking a lot after she got over the stomach bug, so I'll def be giving her formula as usual till 12 mo. I guess I'll have to buy a few more cans.
We will def be buying organic milk if it stays longer! We don't drink milk so K will be the only one!
@theotherstark: I've been thinking about DLS too! K wakes up at 6:30am now, so is she gonna wake up at 5:30am?!
pomegranate / 3045 posts
@winniebee: eek, I'm sorry about the sleep. Hopefully he isn't coming down with anything!
@Miss Ariel: so cute!! H does it, but not super consistently; most of the time it's more of a point, moving his hand up and down. Haha.
@MamaG: ahh, I'm sorry for all the illness Such a bummer. H is vocal but not really saying any words yet. He says mama and dada, but sporadically. And he points at the dog and says "buff!" For Buster. And when I ask him what a cow says, he'll say "mmm." But that's it. Haha. I figure all his mental capacity Is being taken up by his gross motor skills right now. He rarely crawls anymore, and he's just started standing up without pulling himself up on anything.
@snowjewelz: I'm scared!!
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
DLS - ugh. Putting my kids to bed later just always backfires. So, we'll deal with a few days of early wakings. R goes to bed at 7/7:30 and typically has one waking and is up for the day at 6:30.
