2nd time Mamas at what point when potty training did u start to not wear diapers when going out?!
She is literally 90% at home and 100% at her sitters
I still do diaper when we go out and for naps/bedtime
But wondering when to take that leap! Personally I HATE public restrooms so I feel like I'll never want to do it...

We stopped diapers for wake time right away. We had only a few accidents in public. My kid is obsessed with public restrooms . Nap time took longer and nighttime a lot longer.

@sandy:
@MamaG: When we potty trained, we immediately went to no-diapers at all (except nap and night). We'd sometime put him in a pull-up if we were going on a long car ride (or the car ride was going to coincide with a nap), but otherwise we just brought a lot of spare clothes with us everywhere!

@FaithFertility: We got rid of all diapers or pull ups (except nap and night) right away. She was only a few months away from 3 though so maybe more able to hold it / navigate using the bathroom in public?

@MamaG: OK, thanks for info....
I just picture like walking to local park where there are no restrooms?! It's a good 10 min walk
pomelo / 5298 posts
@FaithFertility: in that case I'd have her use the restroom before leaving and probably limit the time there. I just think it's confusing to say sometimes it's okay to wet yourself and other times not.

@faithfertility: we went diaper free (minus naps and night) right from the get-go with K. stayed home/short walks for the first 2-3 days. when we started venturing out, i would just make her try before we left. and for some places, then i would make her try when we got there (open gymnastics places, park, etc). most of the parks have bathrooms here, so i don't think we ended up anywhere without some sort of public restroom. i also just made sure to have a bag of spare pants/underwear in the car always (and preferably another pair in my bag!), just in case. she actually never had an accident out and about!

@FaithFertility: I understand how you feel... I'd rather hold it than going to public restrooms even if they are "clean" haha! Also keep a potty in the car maybe? Sometimes car is closer than restroom!

With Ty he was a lot older, almost 3, when he decided he was done with diapers. I kept him in pull ups for outings for probably the first week then after that just for bedtime and long car rides (he was done napping by then!) We had very, very few accidents.
School keeps saying Ryan is ready! He goes all day there. I think starting next week I'll send him in pull ups and try to parlay this into real potty training.
In other news, I'm letting go of our nanny today. I think most of you saw, but she had a breakdown last week and bailed on me (which that alone I could understand). Then she resigned via email, then took it back. I told her to take some time off and we would connect this week. But a series of texts the last few days leads me to believe this isn't a good fit anymore. She expressed some ambivalence about being able to do the job, so it's giving me the opportunity for an out. I'm sad of course, because she's been great for us....but frankly we don't need a nanny right now and I can't have unreliability or drama. Instead, Ryan is going to start going to school 4 days and I've signed the boys up for "late care" until 5:30 2 of the days (their school is only until 3:30). And I'm cutting my hours a little. They can go to camp at their school in the summer. Tyler cried when we told him last night, but he's cool with it today (turns out he was primarily worried that he would have to get a new nanny, now that he knows he can do after care and I'll be with him more, he's ok). It has been a tiring and drama filled week!!! I'm trying not to make any plans for this baby in case it doesn't work out, so I'll figure that out when the time comes.

@winniebee: Wow! Sorry to hear about all the drama with your nanny, but I'm glad you figured out a good solution for your family!! Glad Tyler is okay with the changes that are going to happen. That's always my biggest fear with little kids is making them go through changes. But they are sooooo resilient! And the fact you aren't introducing him to someone new right away is probably a good thing.
Also, I can't believe any of you are potty training. This isn't even something I'm thinking about right now! Xander didn't start potty training until 2.5.

@Adira: I haven't even suggested potty training to Ryan! I think it's just because he sees tyler and the other kids at school go. At school they offer a potty break to all the kids and ryan always goes! I imagine it will be a slow process with him, but if he wants to do it I won't hold him back!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@winniebee: Yeah, definitely don't hold him back! I'm just impressed he has interest at this age!!

Oh the potty makes me crazy! K is always asking to go and she's started taking clothes and diapers off. All perfectly good signs she's ready. But when we put her on the toilet she won't go. She wants to get off quickly. And will pretty much go in her diaper immediately following.
We use a toilet insert thingee. I'm not a fan of the portable potty things. But I'm fearful we are going to have to try a mini to get her to use the toilet.

@winniebee: ugh sorry about having to let the nanny go but yay that the drama/decision will be done. And it sounds like a little extra school (and less work!) is the perfect solution without changing too much for the boys. I'm sure they will love it. K always begs to stay for aftercare!

@winniebee: I'm sorry to hear about the nanny. I hate confrontation and this sort of thing. I'm glad you have a plan in place. And it sounds like Ryan has made the transition to his school. YEAH! I know it was a struggle for awhile.

@KayKay: Tyler cried the first time I told him he was going to after care (last week)! And now he begs to go!!
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
@MamaG: Thanks! He still cries at drop off but has good days and seems to enjoy it now. I have a parent teacher conference for him today at 5, so I'll know more then

Oh, and we pay our nanny $2,400 a month, plus taxes. Of course school fees will increase a little, but I can definitely think of some things I would like to do with $2,000/month.

@winniebee: Wow sorry for all the nanny drama! Hopefully it turns out to be a blessing in disguise for all of you. @FaithFertility: G is setting the bar high in this potty training business!
Ethan shows interest on and off. He'll sit on the potty but doesn't actually go most times - we have a little potty and still need to get a seat for the big one for him, but he'll sit on that with a step stool.
pear / 1961 posts
@winniebee: yeah, for that much $$, the nanny better be a no-drama solution
eggplant / 11861 posts
@winniebee: sorry about the Nanny drama but sounds line you have a great plan!!
That is how G was she followed the other 2 kiddos at her sitters who were learning and was very interested I had to follow her signs, best of luck!

@winniebee: Eek! Hopefully now you can just get on with the new schedule and everyone can move on! We're at the brink of sending Kara to daycare for an extra day, plus extra hours too w/ #2 coming along soon. I personally think she will love it.. She loves daycare!
@Adira: I'm with you! K has no interest and I have no interest in doing it at this point either with so many other transitions going on!
@FaithFertility: Yeah, that's how Kara's same age cousin is potty trained already too, from watching her brother!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@snowjewelz: Yeah, at this point, I don't think Logan is anywhere near ready. The most he does is go willingly for a diaper change, but he won't let us know if his diaper is dirty or anything and doesn't show any interest in the big toilet or the little potty we have in the bathroom.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@Adira: Kara lies when she's def pooping and I ask her about it! I have no idea why! And she still happily soaks her overnight diaper
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@snowjewelz: haha, Xander used to lie about that too! And overnight training can take a lot longer than day training. Xander's 3.5 and still wears a pull-up at night. I'd say half the time he wakes up dry and the other half it's wet.

I need gift ideas! It's hard to figure out what to buy when you have an older sibling!
What are you all getting your kids?
pomelo / 5298 posts
@Adira: right. I keep telling everyone that K doesn't need anything. K is getting a doll stroller and rain boots for her birthday. For Christmas she is getting an American Girl bitty baby.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@Adira: Well, I already let her open 3 things I bought that I was going to save as gifts. I got her pots/pans for her play kitchen (b/c now she is sooo into actually pretending to cook/eat). Then I got her these fake ice-cream playset b/c she loves ice-cream. And I got her this fake wooden cake to cut with a candle to blow b/c she's obsessed with cake too.
My mom is getting her the cuttable food set from M&D, and some other toy I can't remember.
So now I'm all out, haha. She's getting 2 Usborne books for Christmas, and I'm probably buying her some baby doll accessories, maybe play doh stuff...
I also got her a winter jacket, fleece leggings/tights and bogs winter boots.

Speaking of potty training Ethan has pooped in the bathtub the last THREE times!
@Adira: I need ideas too! Or maybe I have too many and just don't know what to buy!
He loves Mickey so I'm thinking maybe just Mickey PJ's, stuffed animal, and a Mickey Mouse floor rug for his bday.
Christmas? Maybe a mini-trampoline? I know he would LOVE it.

@MamaG: K is getting a Bitty Baby too. It's actually the second one I bought since the first was ruined, but I really wanted her to have one. I did at least have a 20% off coupon to use the second time though.
@snowjewelz: my mil is buying K a kitchen too so I was planning on getting her both the Melisaa and Doug cutting foods and pots and pans as well.
Besides that a bunch of random stuff, some bows, playdough, stickers, and a few books. @Adira:

@josina: your comment reminded me, I was also thinking of buying a Minnie Mouse Duplo set!
eggplant / 11861 posts
@Adira: G is getting a much nicer play kitchen for her birthday with M&D pots and pans, she has a little one now and really is into it! (got it on Offer up)
Christmas a play house from Us and a radio flyer trike
@snowjewelz: YES! G loves to pretend cook and have us eat it.....she makes us Alligator soup....lol no idea where that came from?!?!??!
@Miss Ariel: Ohh Minnie Mouse Duplo set G would love too...Man I am so bad this year!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@FaithFertility: I wanted to get a play kitchen, but Hubs vetoed it!! Booo!!!
pear / 1961 posts
@adira: it's really hard when you have an older kid so you already have a lot of the "big" stuff! for her birthday, we got E a mini-trampoline (she is crazy pants and will hopefully burn lots of energy on it!), these "river stones" things that are different heights and then you jump from each, a little color/sorting thing that uses tweezers (she loves tongs/chopsticks/etc), and a new carseat (lame!). Mostly I told other relatives to get her clothes, art supplies, or books. I think my sister got her some hand puppets?
