@Honeygold89: @Mrs Music: and just FYI, mamas, it does get easier as they get older

Gah. I think I'm on the brink of mastitis. After only 12 days of BFing. Sore breast with a hard lump, body aches, chills, and a low fever. Couch ridden. DH said I'm nursing only and that's it. Trying to manage it before it gets too bad. Hot compress and massaging like crazy and rest.

@Danizaur: aww sorry mama- call your OB and get an Rx ASAP! Hope you feel much better soon.

@erinpye: Fun fun! Didn't think I would ever avoid this but I sure didn't think id get it so soon.
Honestly though my nursing bras are too small for my new huge Breastfeeding boobs and I've been engorged from where my milk has only been in for a little over a week. So I shouldn't bee surprised. LO is still nursing off that side well, but there's still milk leaking out when he pulls off. I'm going braless with a washcloth stuffed in my tank top to catch the milk.

@Danizaur: I'm sorry! Definitely steer clear of any bras or nursing tanks that constrict your breasts because that can contribute. You also can massage the plugged duct while your LO nurses. Warm compresses or a warm shower will provide relief, but can also stimulate milk production, so don't hang out in there for hours!

@erinpye: when I was massaging I finally broke up the large swollen portion and felt a small pea sized lump close to my areola. I massaged it really well and now it's gone. Maybe that was it?
pomegranate / 3706 posts
@Danizaur: could be! Sometimes you'll actually see clumps or strings come out, but I never have actually seen one when I have had them. Good work- if you have a fever though, call your OB.
cantaloupe / 6692 posts
@erinpye: I will. It's 100.5 so it's still pretty low but i think I'll go ahead and call to have them if it gets worse.

@erinpye: the maternal Childhealth hotline reckons the foremill/hind milk thing isn't an issue anymore thanks to new
Research and that it's just the flow. Going to ask the actual nurse and the lactation consultant for confirmation tomorrow. I am only feeding on one side a session but the last two sessions I've done on the one boob (and it goes hard like an hour later) think I'll be feeding on one for half a day each now.
@Danizaur: massaging is super important. I've got swollen ducts under my armpits too. So check under there! I'm leaking all over the place, even sprayed LO in the face with my letdown once. I think also going to pee makes me letdown. basically everything makes me letdown. Crazy!

@erinpye: I think that's usually it so I try yo burp him and then reattach him. Breastfeeding has really been a good and pretty easy experience for me tho I like it.
@Danizaur: I get the lumps too but I just try to feed him and if he doesn't take it I just used my pump and it feels better instantly I have already started to store milk in the freezer so I don't just pump and waste it. Maybe you should get a cheap little pump so when you get engorged between feedings. But you should call about your fever just to be safe hope you feel better

@Mrs Music: I done the same thing the other day. Sprayed LO right in the face
cantaloupe / 6692 posts
The swelling came back. Ugh. I thought I really unclogged it. With all the massaging there is milk everywhere. I decided to pump some to finish emptying the breast and just go ahead and store it but my breast shields are too big. I ordered some smaller ones but they won't be here for a couple of days.
This sucks!!!

When I went to bed tonight I was FREEZING. I knew I was running a fever pretty badly but DH was already asleep and LO was actually sleeping in his pack and play so I didn't want to get up to check. Woke up 3 hours later covered in sweat and feeling better but my right breast is swollen and hard again. Grr.
DH is going to pick up my antibiotics for me tomorrow and I'm having him double check and see if Walmart has any small shields. Online they didn't carry a small size but I'm dying to pump and get better.

@Danizaur: Oh no, I'm sorry. Clogged ducts and mastitis are the worst! Make sure you take the entire course of antibiotics when you get them, and also take a probiotic or eat lots of probiotic yogurt whilst taking the course as you don't want to end up with thrush after the mastitis goes. Hope you start feeling better soon!
I promise FT mamas, it does get better and soon! And it's much easier the second time around so just know it will never be this tough again.
pomegranate / 3706 posts
@Ree723: definitely easier the second time! BF is hard!
Just an FYI- my IBCLC just told me a recent study showed that women who use lanolin on sore nipples are much more likely to develop infection (usually thrush) than women who don't. Pass the info along and stick to coconut oil, breastmilk, and other lanolin-free choices for sore nips!

Made myself rest all day today. It's 3:30 and I literally haven't left my bedroom. Luckily the bathroom is attached. Lol. I have my baby with me and we've just nursed and napped all day while daddy brought me food and warm compresses and my medicine. I'm feeling much better finally.

@erinpye: I've heard this too from my LC. Olive oil is another option.

@Danizaur: glad your feeling better.
So every time I lay Noah on his back to sleep when I look at him again he's on his side. Is this safe or do I need to try to do something about it. I didn't think babies do that this early. (3 weeks today).

@Honeygold89: LO has been doing this since day 3 - I have no idea what, if anything to do about it. He's far from
Being on his stomach so I figure it's safe enough, and obviously more comfortable for him.
@Danizaur: Oh noes! Feel better mama. Sounds horrendous.
@Elbiekay: Any news? How are you holding up?
Right, after 40 mins on the boob, let's see if I can get LO to sleep and me a few winks myself. <sigh> (Glad he's eating so well but...yawn!)

@Honeygold89: @OldEnglandMama: CJ's preference is for his side too. I try and replace him on his back whenever I catch him but I always sleep on my side and DH is a tummy sleeper so we're not exactly shining examples either.
nectarine / 2527 posts
@OldEnglandMama: I'm glad he's not the only one then he's been doing it since he was a week so about two weeks now.
@SweetMamaM: that's funny. At first he slept on his back exactly like DH the same position and now he's on his side like me.
With both of your Lo's doing it I guess I won't bother him then and I'll let him be.

I finally have a baby! Tobias (Toby) was born at 12:57am on March 6th.
My water broke at 10pm on March 4th. Contractions started at 2am on March 5th and were immediately strong. We got to the hospital just before 10am. I labored naturally until 7pm (17 hours) and finally got an epidural. It took several more hours and some pit to get rid of the last lip of my cervix, so I think the epi was the right call. Pushing started just after midnight on the 6th and took about 45 minutes.
Happy Birth Day to Toby... 11 days past due but right on time

@ElbieKay: yay! Welcome to the world little Toby!
Hard to believe our list is complete!
After thinking that we had some sort of routine down, we had the worst night last night. Think I'm currently operating on about two hours sleep... Rough. I know it sounds naive but I didn't really expect parenting to be this hard. Anyone else in the same boat?
nectarine / 2527 posts
@SweetMamaM: poor mama we don't have a routine down either but lucky for me I've always been a night person so being up doesn't bother me it's the mornings I don't like lol but since DH is off he gets him in the morning for me til I get up like around 9 or 10am. We do have some rough nights tho but when we do I just tell myself it won't last long and he'll get a routine down soon. Good luck and don't get too overwhelmed it'll get easier soon for us all
Does anybody else LO have baby acne I'm so upset that Noah has it I hate looking at it and think I did something wrong somewhere but everybody keep telling me it's normal. I don't use anything on his face and me and DH stop wearing perfumes when he was born until he gets a little older so I guess it was just going to happen either way.
cherry / 209 posts
@SweetMamaM: yes I'm with you. LO is 2 weeks old and last week and early this week was sleeping great and I thought "yay, easy baby, already in a routine". How naive. The last 3 days have been rough, partly due to my oversupply I think and also I think that while DH is better than me at swaddling, putting on nappies so they don't leak, burping and bottle feeding, I'm better at getting her to sleep.
grapefruit / 4819 posts
@Honeygold89: Yes to the baby acne Poor little C has had it for the past two weeks as well. What I've found helps is putting some breast milk on it after each feed. I just hand express a little extra and dab it over all the acne bits - it clears it up in a day or two. C's is a thousand times better now! BM is the magic cure all for everything I think!
@SweetMamaM: I'm sorry mama, it is tough at the beginning. Potentially lame advice here but what helps me get through the tough nights is just accepting that I won't be getting any sleep that night. Once I've accepted that and come to terms with it, it doesn't seem so bad. Is your DH back at work? Or do you have anyone nearby that can help out a bit?
pear / 1743 posts
@Ree723: hubby has been working from home the last couple of days but has to go back to work on Monday. I don't have anyone else and I guess that's what makes me a bit terrified... It's rough dealing with this on a day where he is around, let alone trying to handle him spazzing out all day after a night of no sleep too.
