@Mrs Music: I feel like DH is better at calming LO and putting him to sleep and diaper changes but I'm better at swaddling and feeding lol

@Ree723: aw I have to try it. I just hate the acne I've never heard or knew about it until he started getting it.

@SweetMamaM: Yes. :(. You definitely don't know what you're in for til it happens! Doesn't help that all I wanna do is lay in bed. I still feel pretty crappy. LO has started being fussy and nothing soothes him. Luckily it's not crying like colic but enough to make me sad because everything I try makes him angrier.

I always thought I wanted about 4 kids but now I feel like my body has been hit by a truck. There's seriously no comparison physically to the toll pregnancy and mothering takes on the human body. How did we even survive to this point? lol

I finally stuck the boob in his mouth last night when he got upset again even though he had just eaten 10 minutes earlier and it worked. Gonna keep trying it everytime he's fussy. It worries me though that he's not getting enough even though I still leak milk when we are done. His latch isn't the greatest so that's why I'm worried.

@Ree723: LO is getting it a little bit but I noticed it goes away on his chin much faster than his forehead. Must be from the breast milk!!

I did crib from night 1 with DS but I have been co sleeping with dd and I'm kicking myself for not with DS. I nurse her in bed just sleep on my side and it's sooo much easier.

Our pedi wants me to only nurse her every 2-3 hours but I'll prob start more of a schedule in a week or two.

@matador84: I can only successfully latch LO half the time side lying. Most of the time I don't even try. So I stay in bed and DH changes his diaper and then hands me my boppy and nipple shield. Then I let him go back to sleep and I put LO back to bed.

BUT I did actually manage to latch LO on the left side with no shield today. He was fussy so I tried to offer him a binky and he got fussier. So I started to nurse him but when he tasted that silicone of the shield I think he thought it was the pacifier again so I quickly tossed it and shoved my nipple in. He was confused at first but it worked!!! He actually latched much deeper than he does with the shield (which makes sense). I tried later on my right and he didn't take my breast. I had to use the shield. But there is hope!

    @ElbieKay: Yay, baby! Congrats, mama!

Sorry I've been absent lately, I'm just enamored with this LO! DH has had the last few days off, too, so we've been having a great time with a "second paternity leave" with baby. LO's had a couple rough patches, but I think it's because of eating takeout/greasier food, so we'll be eating even healthier now to see if that eases her gas/BM fussiness.

All in all, we're having a blast with the baby girl, even if we are a bit more tired right now. I do the later night stuff, and DH takes her after 6am and lets me sleep (save for feedings) so that helps us both. I *STILL* have to write thank-yous yet from my shower, ugh! But within a month or two is acceptable, right?

Does anyone else's LO use their boob like a pacifier? She wants to eat all the time and I think it's because when I take her off she just wants something to suck. I got told that you can't overfeed a breastfed baby, but I'm pretty sure she's get tummy upset at some point from too much milk, not to mention that I really don't want her to be one of those babies that gets huge really quickly when she was so small at birth.

She will take a pacifier but it's a pain cos when it falls out she cries and then we have to put it back in.

  14. artsyfartsy

    cantaloupe / 6692 posts

@Mrs Music: this exactly. Last night he actually was hungry and eating every 10 mins or so. But tonight he's mostly just playing around. He takes a paci too but gets so upset when he spits it out....which is every 10 seconds.

Anyone just waiting for their day off? I love being a mama but I guess I have that mentality I have at work...yeah I'm tired and overworked but I have a day off coming up soon. Then I remind myself that I will never ever have a day off in the near future. It's exhausting. I hate to complain because I love taking care of my son...but mama is tired!

@Danizaur: how did you know he was actually hungry when he wanted to feed every 10 mins and not just wanting to comfort feed?

And yes. Sometimes I keep wondering what on earth I got myself into and is there a 14 day money back guarantee jks. I am hoping things will be better once my confinement is over.

  17. artsyfartsy

    cantaloupe / 6692 posts

@Mrs Music: Well he seemed like he was actually hungry. He sucked and swallowed much more deeply everytime like he does at feedings. Every advice I could find said to nurse him as much as possible, so I have been!

@Danizaur: same here. But I'm worried that she'll get massive too quickly. She was only a small baby. 2.7kg at birth and now at 2 weeks old she's almost 3kg!

@Mrs Music: That's a good thing! It's super important in the first few weeks to feed on demand so your supply can get established. My LO gained 520 grams between 5 days old and 14 days old - it's a good thing and totally normal They do stay little for such a short period of time but at this stage of the game, you really can't over feed your baby. Maybe when they're a bit older, if you give them a feed every single time they cry (I have a SIL who does this), it might become a problem, but right now, don't worry about it!

@Danizaur: we actually did manage to get a couple of hours off earlier today - fed CJ up to the gills and then my aunt watched him while we went and got some lunch. He stayed asleep the entire two hours we were gone! It did wonders for my mental health. Feel like I'm paying for it tonight though - even though he had no idea we were gone, this evening has been cluster feeding and one very unsettled baby. DH is back at work tomorrow and I am terrified!
@Mrs Music: @Ree723: your babies are such good gainers! Despite my good supply, CJ is still not back to birth weight we're now feeding him three times every wake cycle so fingers crossed!

@SweetMamaM: sometimes they are just slow starters! N gained only 4 oz in his first 2 weeks. The next 2 weeks he gained 1 lb and 3 oz. CJ will get there!!

@Ree723: They keep saying you can't overfeed a breastfed baby but when they start spitting up all over or their tummies look bloated doesn't that mean they've had too much?? My LO doesn't pull off when she's done, she just falls asleep and I pull her off... sometimes, other times she senses it and starts sucking again while I'm halfway out Ouch!

@Mrs Music: my LO was throwing up after feedings because she would just eat and eat and eat, so the Dr recommended burp, feed 7, burp, other side 7, burp and then back to the 1st side if she wants more.

I wanted to be sure she wasn't getting mostly foremilk, so we burp, feed off a side until she's satisfied or asleep, burp, and then see if she wants more (usually not). The Dr was good with that plan, too. I just pump the other side if it gets too full before her next feeding. This has really reduced her spit-up episodes and helped start my freezer stash. I hope your LO's tummy issues settle down, it's no fun seeing an upset babe.

What are your LOs' routines like? CJ will not sleep properly in the morning and will just catnap between feeds. Around two in the afternoon he'll go down for his first long nap and sleeps well overnight. Think he's probably getting the minimum recommended sleep but not sure how to change his view on mornings.

  26. artsyfartsy

    cantaloupe / 6692 posts

@SweetMamaM: I have no idea. I track his nursing sessions and they are relatively close in time each day. But his naps and awake times seem to always change. He sleeps decently at night but it takes some work to get him back to sleep. Lol

About to give LO his first bottle of pumped milk when he wakes up. I'm nervous. It feels wrong almost. Lol idk why.

Does anyone have tips on how to not get milk on your bra when breastfeeding? I'm running out of clean bras! Particularly when doing the lying down position!

  29. artsyfartsy

    cantaloupe / 6692 posts

@Mrs Music: OMG No! I'm pretty sure every surface in my house has a thin layer of milk on it. It's everywhere. It kind of keeps me from going out in public because I'm constantly getting milk all over my bra and shirt. I use breast pads but of course after feeding and when LO pulls off, milk goes everywhere.

@Mrs Music: @Danizaur: I've been tucking a small wadded receiving blanket under the boob/his chin to some success. Plus I wipe his milky cheeky chops with a burp cloth as soon as he pulls off. It helps to some extent though I still get through twice as many clothes as before!

Had our first public nursing session today (yey Starbucks) - big success. I've yet to do a public diaper change though. Trying to do a small outing every day, building up to bigger so that when I no longer have support from the grandparents, it won't seem like such a big deal...hopefully.

@Danizaur: How did the pumped milk go down? How goes the pumping itself? I've not tried yet - that's this week's challenge. I freaked about giving him a pacifier earlier because I was nervous about nipple confusion - he spat it out anyway

  31. artsyfartsy

    cantaloupe / 6692 posts

@OldEnglandMama: It went well! He downed it after only a little hesitation. I've heard though that babies that are used to nipple shields take to bottles easier because they're used to the artificial nipple. So maybe that's true. Pumping itself went okay! It's definitely a lot to learn.

  32. Mrs Music

    cherry / 209 posts

@OldEnglandMama: my LO can switch between bottle, boob, nipple shield , different types of dummies and her fingers/fist. Basically she'll suck anything.

@Danizaur: I miss pumping. I'm so engorged and now I have to do every feeding. Can not wait for my supply to settle down abit so I can start again. Not pumping though does free up some time. Does anyone actually know how long I have to wait for my engorgement to settle till I can pump again?

Sorry I've been in hiding! All going well over here except I'm so exhausted! I think I got 4 hrs sleep scattered through the night

Today is my first day totally alone with both my girls (toddler and newborn)!

Toddler woke up yelling she peed in her crib up to her elbows. So we already have laundry in and she's in the tub right now. Phew all before 730 am. Gonna be a long day!

@OldEnglandMama: the LC I saw doesn't believe in nipple confusion and I have to say I'm right there with her! We gave N a pacifier at 5 days old and his first bottle at 2 weeks and he never has issues at the breast!

  35. OldEnglandMama

    cherry / 212 posts

@Danizaur: Yey! That's good news. Glad it went well. I guess I should brave it sooner rather than later.

@Mrs Music: @MrsKoala: Good to hear. I wonder if it's another of those myths put out there to terrify us all and add to the stress. Or possibly a relic from the days of less hi-tech synthetic nipples.

@IcebergMom: oh my goodness mama. Good luck today! Things can only get better from there....I hope!

OMG WHY MY LO WANT TO FEED EVERY HOUR ON THE HOUR TONIGHT?!

Sorry I need a rant. Last night was brilliant and I finally thought I was getting the hang of this...

@Mrs Music: It's just what they do. You have a great night of sleep, expect the same the next night, and then they are on the boob ALL. NIGHT. LONG. Hang in there--every night won't be like this!

@OldEnglandMama: I was worried about that with my first, but lots of LCs and Docs told me it's not even anything to worry about and they've never seen nipple confusion before. Both my DDs have taken boob, bottle, binky, and been fine!

  38. erinpye

    pomegranate / 3706 posts

@IcebergMom: How'd it go‽ My DH left to go back to work before DD2 was even 2 weeks old and I was TERRIFIED! It's still so hard with a newborn and a toddler, but it's getting easier and less scary. Does your toddler freak out when you nurse your newbie? Mine hates it, cries, and wants me to hold her--it's awful.

  39. IcebergMom

    persimmon / 1295 posts

@OldEnglandMama: @erinpye: it went ok ! Thanks for asking at 2 pm I looked at the clock and couldn't believe it want 9 pm. Sadie (newborn) slept for some really long stretches (in her basinet), so grace (2 1/2) and I were able go have Alone time; Playdoh, painting and made muffins!

Grace doesn't mind the nursing! Sadie is quick (10 mins) so it's not long and usually grace wants to sit beside me and usually ends up playing with the camera on my phone.

Was in bed tonight at 8 pm! This will take some getting used to.
