I finally got around to doing a facebook announcement this weekend. I had bought DS a t-shirt a while ago that said "I'm a big brother" and i got him to wear it while holding a pic from the ultrasound (i also intend for him to wear it when he comes to meet DS2 at the hospital in February). I put my status to say that DS is already excited to wear his "I'm a big brother" shirt while we wait for the arrival of his baby brother in Feb. 2016.
Here he is with his phony smile, lol. It was the best i could get out of him.

@californiadreams: Too cute, love your son's curls! I think I'm going to pull the trigger and announce on fb this weekend myself.

This group is pretty quiet! Hope that means everyone is doing well! Anyone have their GD test yet? I don't think my midwife does them until 28 weeks, but I've heard lots of OBs do them at 24. Anyone doing anything fun for Halloween --any good pregnant costumes?

@ms.line: Hi I'm still here!
I have my GD test on Nov 24 at 26 weeks. They gave me the drink at my last appt so I could chill it and drink it before I go in. Last time was fruit punch, this time they gave me orange

@fancyfunction: Oh that's good, I've heard it tastes much better when it's nice and cold! I'm nervous for my test - my dad has diabetes, so I feel (probably totally irrationally!) that I'm more likely to have GD. Makes me kinda glad they're giving me until 28 weeks to take the test!
grapefruit / 4085 posts
@ms.line: Yeah it tastes a bit better that way. I just noticed my last post made no sense (auto correct!) For my last pregnancy I had the fruit punch flavor and this time it's orange. My mom has diabetes too and I don't think that has any effect on if you'll get GD
grapefruit / 4079 posts
@ms.line: I was pre-diabetic before getting pregnant due to PCOS so I've been checking my sugar 4x a day and following the GD diet since 6 weeks.

@ms.line: my next midwife appt is not for another week or two and i am already at 25 weeks, so i assume they will tell me when to go for it then.

@ms.line: I don't have my next appointment scheduled yet. All my ultrasounds have been through the perinatal clinic at my hospital instead of my regular OB's office (due to scheduling) so I haven't seen her in a while! I better check and get something scheduled.
Tomorrow is 24 weeks for me! Feels like a big relief.
Here's a photo of my Halloween costume. I was going to dye the long sleeved white shirt and pants my flesh color, but ran out of time.

@TemperanceBrennan: HAHA OMG love it!!! You look great.
Hooray for hitting the 24 week milestone! I'm looking forward to Friday for the same reason!

I didn't dress up for Halloween, but I did decide to finally announce on Facebook. It was well-received, despite my continued lack of baby bump!

@ms.line: So cute! I love the "Wanna hear something truly scary" part! You look great!

@TemperanceBrennan: love the costume! i kind of wish i did a pregnant costume, but we had no plans to go anywhere so i didn't bother!
@ms.line: love the announcement! i was wondering if you went ahead with it this weekend.

@TemperanceBrennan: @californiadreams: Thanks! And as reality is slowly setting in, it really *is* scary!

So, to keep the discussion here going - what are your plans after baby? WOH, WAH, SAH? Will it be a change from what you are already doing?
I'm the breadwinner of our family, so I will (and want to) keep working. DH works from home, but he has told me he isn't comfortable being in charge of a baby and being responsible for work duties so we will likely switch to daycare immediately after my maternity leave.
pear / 1770 posts
@TemperanceBrennan: I currently work full time, with one day a week from home. I will definitely keep working after maternity leave, but I'm not quite sure what it will look like. I can go down to full time flex, which is 28-32 hours a week with prorated pay. OR, I can ask my boss for more work from home time. Either way, we will be putting the baby in daycare full time. We've already toured FIVE daycare centers and we're on the waitlist for ALL of them. It's soooo frustrating! They all prioritize full time kids, so that's our only hope of getting in. I'm definitely not excited by the idea of full time daycare costs, but I'm trying not to obsess about it too much, since there's not much I can do!
pear / 1998 posts
@ms.line: Flex time and work from home options are great! There is a guy in my office that works from home Friday, but I have a feeling it is a bit of a hindrance in his promotion potential. Not sure if I might pursue something like that as well.
Ugh, daycare. I have been burying my head in the sand for too long. There is a center that is less than a quarter of a mile from our house. I haven't toured yet, but it does not get good reviews from friends that have toured it (no one we know actually sends their kids there). There is another one that is still pretty close that our nephews went to, but it is the most expensive one in the area (by a lot) but everyone we know loves it. I don't want to take all the time/effort to schedule tours, but I know we should. There is a big wait-list in our area too.
pear / 1770 posts
@TemperanceBrennan: Yeah, enough people work from home in my office that I don't think it's that big of a deal for me, but I do worry about getting "mommy-tracked" if I go down to full-time flex. All the young moms in my department are full time flex, which on one hand means it must be really nice, but on the other I don't want to be seen as another typical mom on the mom schedule.
It is such a pain in the ass to schedule tours, I totally don't blame you for putting it off. I have one more to go to that I've rescheduled twice already because I just can't deal! Also I've cried about the whole thing like, a half dozen times now.

I already sah so I'll be adding a second into the mix. I'm hoping the transition goes somewhat smoothly for all Thankfully my husband is taking two weeks and then has Easter break at his school soon after. Then it's almost June and he'll be home for the summer.

I also stay at home an will continue to with the second..
It must be so hard deciding on a daycare place- waitlists and everything too!! Hope it works out wonderfully for you working mommas and there's awesome places that have room for your little ones

@ms.line: @ms.line: how much maternity leave do you both get?
I have a year long mat leave, so i will be a SAHM mom for a year. But since DS1 has been in daycare and now preschool full time since my last mat leave ended 2 years ago, he will stay part time. He really enjoys preschool, so I think it is better for him to stay. But i never liked how much time he is there, so i am happy with him going down to 3 days a week and shorter days (like 7-8 hours per day instead of the 9 - 10 it is now).
After my year is up, I intend to only go back to work part time and if i can extend my leave by a few months, i will do it. I had such a hard time going back to work when DS1 was a year old and in an ideal world i would stay home full time for 18 months before going back to work part time. I am not sure my job will grant me an additional 6 months or that we can swing it financially (as it would be unpaid at that point with no government assistance), but i will take what i can get/manage.
I am not sure yet how long I will work part time. Ideally it would be until both kids are in school full time. (so 5 years i guess). We shall see.

@californiadreams: I get 16 weeks, half of that paid. I would loooove to be able to have a year - US family leave policies are such bullsh!t.
pomegranate / 3411 posts
@ms.line: i sadly agree with you on that
eta. 16 weeks sounds better than the 6 weeks i hear some people get.
grapefruit / 4278 posts
I work 32hrs/wk now and will go back to that schedule after LO is here. I'm planning on taking 12 weeks, 6 weeks of std and then some time covered by pto and then unpaid. DH gets SIX WEEKS of paid parental leave, so he'll be around for half of my leave. I'm pretty sure we'll still send E to daycare since I'd like to keep his schedule as normal as possible, but we still need to look into how much we want to send him and what we'll need to do to save his spot.
Baby girl will probably go to the same center E is at now, but I've considered looking into at home centers for her for the first year too. It would be a significant cost savings and I really don't care for the woman in the infant room at E's center. DH is leary of at home centers though... lots of decisions to be made, running out of time to make them!

@californiadreams: Oh yeah, I am definitely lucky! I actually took this job because my last job offered NO maternity leave at all.
@kiddosc: It's awesome your DH gets so much leave! My husband is just going to take a week of PTO.

Hi ladies,
I feel like I've been so disconnected from this group for a while, glad to finally have time to catch up!
I just got back from vacation in Europe, and was working crazy hours the couple weeks before to prepare for my vacation (doesn't it always work that way??), so I couldn't really stay connected. I'm glad to be back to a relatively normal schedule.
Vacation was totally awesome, we got to see lots of family and friends who were all so excited to see my bump. But man was it tiring traveling from place to place! I'm glad we did it early enough in the pregnancy, I'm not sure I could handle it for much longer. We're planning on staying put until baby comes now, and I'm just fine with that!
Working after baby comes: my work gives the (US) standard 12 weeks of job protection, with 8 weeks of it being paid. But my boss is being super awesome, and I'm probably going to take 6-7 months off! I'm really excited she's being so flexible and letting me take the time I feel I need with my baby. Of course, most of that will be unpaid, and we still have to figure out how long we can make that work financially. But I'm in the middle of a transition at work anyway, where I'm changing projects, so it felt like a good time to take a really long break. I haven't decided yet what I'll do after maternity leave. I've always dreamed of being a SAHM, and considering I don't love my job right now, that feels really appealing. But I don't know if we can make that work financially. So I have some thinking to do. But we haven't even started thinking about daycare yet, since I'm taking a long mat leave and will have time (hopefully!) once baby comes. Day care is definitely really expensive and competitive here in Boston, so I'm sure that'll play into the decision. So much to think about!
In nursery news: we had work done on the house while we were on vacation, and the work on the nursery is done. So now we need to start buying furniture, picking paint colors, decorating, etc. I'm really excited about this part! My parents are visiting this weekend, so they'll be a great help in getting the nursery set up!
Hope everyone's doing great!
@MrsBPhD: Welcome!

@saboma: Glad to hear you had a nice trip! DH and I have and upcoming trip to NYC planned, and I'm tired just thinking about it. It's great your boss is letting you take so much time off! I would love to take 6 months off but I think 16 weeks is pushing it for my company as is.
Have fun working on your nursery! Our nursery is painted and the furniture is bought and assembled and the crib bedding is all ready, but I'm really procrastinating on decorating. I bought supplies to make box valences (but I have like, zero motivation right now) and I need to get a bunch of prints I have framed and hung, and pick out a mobile and stuff... it will get done eventually, I guess!

@MrsBPhD: Welcome!!!
Anyone (probably just FTMs) taking a birthing/parenting class? Our first one is tonight, it's 6 weeks, 2 1/2 hours each time! Seems like a lot, but it was essentially free (we will get reimbursed by health insurance).
apple seed / 3 posts
@TemperanceBrennan: We have taken several parenting type classes, but they were each about 90 minutes long (Infant Care 101, Infant Safety, Breastfeeding Basics, Infant/Child CPR). We are planning on doing a birthing class, which I believe is about 12 hours total, done over several sessions. Unfortunately that class is $60. Not prohibitively expensive, but I like free:)
Now that you mention it, I should see if we get reimbursed for that class from insurance.

@saboma: that's amazing that you get to take such a long leave! I dream of being a SAHM mom too, but i think the perfect balance for me will be to work part time, just the longer i am home the better!
@ms.line: sounds like your nursery is coming along nicely! i have all my decorations, but need to paint and assemble the crib and purchase a glider still!
@TemperanceBrennan: I took ALL the classes last time. This time i am planning to do infant CPR again, and I am thinking about taking a VBAC class. And since we will be in a different hospital, i will sign up for a tour.

I had a midwife appt today and in 2 weeks i am going for the glucose test. Also from now on, she said appts will be every 2 weeks! I feel like it means i am getting closer to the end!
pear / 1998 posts
@MrsBPhD: You should definitely check! I'm pretty sure this one class covers all the individual classes you mentioned. Did you find them all useful?
There is also one just for dads (just a one day session), but DH doesn't want to go.
@californiadreams: I'm the same way as you - give me all the information! Especially because they are all free.
cherry / 105 posts
@californiadreams: I'm really excited about my long leave too. I think I may end up doing part-time after my leave as well, depending on what's available at work. If there's an exciting new project, I'd definitely be more willing to work. We'll see!
My next midwife appt is on the 17th, and then I start going every 2 weeks as well. I'm sure that''ll help in making things move faster!
@TemperanceBrennan: we've signed up for the birthing class offered by the hospital where I'm delivering; it's free. It's next Saturday, all day. After we've taken that, we'll see if we feel like we need to do more. Might be nice to get some breastfeeding basics and some infant CPR too. But all the free classes at the hospital have filled up, so we'll see if we feel like paying for some elsewhere.
apple seed / 3 posts
@TemperanceBrennan: I did! Breastfeeding was super helpful. I took it with my husband, and I'd highly recommend bringing your SO if they can come with you. I knew a lot of the info in the Baby 101 class, but DH didn't so it was nice for him to get familiar with things. Child safety was also a great overview of stuff, and brought up things that I hadn't really considered before (like making sure my family had all their TDAP+Flu shots before they came over).
