@TemperanceBrennan: Have fun at your class tonight! Mine aren't starting for another 6 weeks, and I'm anxious for them - I'm taking a 'confident birthing' course that spans two Saturdays for 5 hours each time. It's at a private prenatal education center, so it's $270 and I only get $60 reimbursed by insurance, but I know the instructor and I really like her vibe, so I hope it will be worth it. I've got additional breastfeed and infant care classes scheduled for early February, and I feel like I should try to squeeze in an infant CPR class and a hospital tour, in case I have an emergency transfer from my birth center.
@californiadreams: Every two weeks already! Guess we really are starting the countdown!
Anyone involved in baby shower/sprinkle planning yet? We just settled on January 17th for my friends & family shower - I wanted to get it on the calendar because I feel like between the holidays, my birthday, travelling, and baby classes, my weekends are filling up fast!

I'm in the waiting room waiting on the blood glucose test and it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought! They had it cold and I got the fruit punch. Now I just sit and wait.

@ms.line: Yep, no GD for me and she said my blood numbers look good so no need to supplement with iron!
pear / 1998 posts
@ms.line: Thanks, I'm weirdly excited for the class. Although, I still kind of feel like an imposter - like I'm just pretending to be pregnant but going through all the motions you see people on TV and the movies doing. But honestly - I kind of feel like that all the time - like I'm still a teenager pretending to be an adult.
I'm having two showers - one in early December in my hometown (mostly for my mom and all of her friends and family). She's a worrier and thinks if we doing something in January or February there will be a huge snowstorm or something.
We're also having a co-ed shower in our current city on January 16 at a brewery with the theme "A baby is brewing" - my guy friend is taking the lead on planning it and he was asking me a ton of questions up front, but I think he and my other close friend have it under control.

@ms.line: have fun in NYC! Anything planned for while you're here?
pear / 1770 posts
@TemperanceBrennan: hahaha, I totally feel like an adult imposter, and especially being the first of my friends to get pregnant, I feel like a teen mom! But then my coworker's 19 year old sister just got pregnant, and I realized I'm a DECADE older than her, so I guess I'm not really so young. The 'baby is brewing' theme is too cute! It's so nice you have a guy friend planning it - my dad is "hosting" mine but he's being such a square old man about it, I'm elbowing a lot of opinions in!
@fancyfunction: Thanks! My husband and I used to live in Brooklyn and got married at Grand Central, so we're headed back to visit some friends and hang out in our old stomping grounds. I'm a museum junkie so I'm super excited to see the new Whitney. I wanted to see Hamilton but I waited too long to get tix and now they're being scalped for $500+ a piece.
grapefruit / 4085 posts
@ms.line: Oh fun - enjoy! I'd like to see Hamilton too but I think we'll be waiting a while.

@MrsBPhD: congrats on your baby girl!
We just moved so we will probably schedule a hospital tour and get pre-registered (sure came in handy last time..)
What are you ladies thinking of in terms of birth plans?
Even though I've given birth before it still feels new to me.. Last time I was hoping for natural but open to meds.. I ended up laborint at home as long as I could but it was TOO long (rookie mistake??). I was ready to push at home and we barely made it t the hospital.
This time around I we will for sure try to get to the hospital earlier.. And so I'm nervous about laboring there with all the nurses docs checking on me and not being able to relax.. Last time I literally just pushed why out at hospital so I feel like a FTM in not knowing what to expect.
I think I'll try natural again but... We shall see!!
cherry / 105 posts
@mrs.kiwi: I'm hoping to do what you did the first time, actually, minus getting to the hospital too late. I want to labor at home as long as possible so I can avoid too much monitoring at the hospital. I also want to go all natural, and I plan to ask for one of the tub rooms to help that--there is no epidural equipment in those rooms, so you're less likely to get it. I've started putting together a birth plan, that mostly says "don't do too much to me unless you have to" and involve DH as much as possible. I haven't reviewed it with my midwife yet, but hopefully she'll be on board. I'm definitely worried about the FTM rookie mistakes, so I need to be open to things not going according to plan. We'll see...
kiwi / 635 posts
@saboma: lol yea if anything I thought rookie mistake was getting there too early.. Anyway we all have our own rookie mistakes right
pear / 1998 posts
@mrs.kiwi: I love everything about my doctor and hospital and I'm definitely open to an epidural. I'm planning to just follow the guidelines - labor at home until contractions are 5 minutes apart. Ask for an epidural when the pain gets to be too much.
My hospital has huge tubs in each room (there are two suites with actual birthing tubs, but you have to be pre-approved for them), and a huge basket of pain management/coping tools. We can also bring anything we want from home and can wear whatever we want.
It's a "baby friendly" hospital and totally supportive of breastfeeding, but not to the point where if you decide to formula feed they will hinder that (but they don't provide formula unless medically necessary and they don't provide pacifiers).
So I don't really have a birth plan except for "listen to my concerns and answer my questions". Besides that, I feel like I have (and will continue) to do enough research to know what to expect and be able to make informed decisions with the help of my trusted doctor.
My friend with three kids has told me that (for her) giving birth once doesn't truly prepare you for your future labors. She has three kids, first one with a epi (which she got really really sick from), one baby was 3 weeks premature, and her last labor lasted something like 40 hours.
grapefruit / 4278 posts
@mrs.kiwi: I went in with a pretty open mind for #1. I was going to try the natural thing out and then get the epidural if I felt like I needed it. We lived over an hour from the hospital, so I probably went in earlier than I needed to since I didn't want to be stuck on the side of the road. Once we got to the hospital, I was throwing up with each contraction, which is what made me decide to go ahead with the epidural. I had a dream labor after that. Took a nap, woke up dilated to a 10, labored down for an hour, and then pushed for about 20 minutes and only had a small internal tear.
We're only 15 mins away from the hospital this time, so I plan to stay at home longer. But I'm definitely not opposed to the epidural again. Going with the flow, staying calm, and trusting my healthcare providers really worked well for me last time and I'm hoping it will this time as well.
pear / 1770 posts
@mrs.kiwi: I'm giving birth in a freestanding birth center attended by midwives, so epidural won't be an option. I just interviewed a doula today and we talked a lot about my birth goals - I'm definitely aiming for an unmedicated birth with as few interventions as possible, but of course, anything can happen.

@TemperanceBrennan: With DD1 I took breastfeeding with my husband and infant CPR. I would have learned everything from the breastfeeding class from the hospital but it helped put my mind at ease and get my husband on the same page. I think infant CPR is a must. But for birthing classes, I really didn't want to know anything because I didn't want to worry. So I just winged it. Ended up being a wonderful birth experience, but I know many people who want to feel prepared.
I still feel like an impostor with a two year old! Like I'm just playing this game because I can't really have a two year old!
@ms.line: I think instead of a sprinkle, since this is the same gender, my friends are going to get together and we're going to do a little spa day. Way to celebrate the baby, but with no gifts and everyone gets to enjoy it! They came up with it and I loved the idea.
@mrs.kiwi: I did the whole hospital, epidural with Baby #1 and it was great. Water broke at home - got some things together, showered, etc. came in. Ordered an epidural at 4cm and it came an hour later at 10cm ready to push. Thank goodness or I almost wouldn't have gotten it. Had quite a bit of tearing and was thankful for the epidural when it came to sewing me up. I wouldn't change a thing, except this time, if the second does usually come quicker, I might need to hurry to the hospital and in getting the epidural.
My glucose test is Thursday. Passed last time, but almost passed out - was really shaking and just needed food. Not looking forward to it, but really hoping I pass. I love sweets too much to be on a diet.
I work out of the office until lunch, pick DD up at 1 and then wfh in the afternoon. Although it'll be crazy with two, I'm hoping the same schedule will work.

hello - I'm curious if anyone else is RHnegative blood type? Unfortunately I am and I have my rhogam shot scheduled for next week. I'm a bit nervous about getting the shot as it seems like it will hurt. Curious has anyone had one of these before? Or any issues with being RH-?
pear / 1770 posts
@Bella214: I'm Rh positive, but I haven't heard anything bad about the Rhogam shot. I've read it's just like a regular shot, and it will prevent any complications associated with being Rh negative. Good luck!

We have finally made it to the less than 3 month mark! Whats on your to-do list for before the baby? We really want to get DD potty trained and moved to a big bed. We started potty training this weekend (its day 3) and, spoiler alert, its not going anywhere at all. I can only imagine the big bed will be similar.
We only have a few things left to do in her new room, and a few small purchases to make before the baby arrives. We're keeping the nursery as is.
I'm pretty pleased in our progress, but I'm sure the holidays will fly by and all of a sudden we will be a month out.
grapefruit / 4278 posts
@Kelley_lovelikecrazy: Oh no, sorry potty training isn't going great. It was a months long process for us.
We haven't even started putting baby's room together. #1 currently sleeps in the crib converted to a toddler bed, so we need to transition him to a new bed (the old guest bed, since the guest room is becoming the new nursery). We've moved since setting up the nursery for #1, I wish we could just move him to a new room and have most things already set up for baby girl!

@Kelley_lovelikecrazy: i hope the potty training gets better! we are planning to train our newly turned 3 yo starting in the next couple of weeks. Been putting it off for too long, and i am afraid it won't go as smooth and easy as i hope. But i really like the idea of only one kid in diapers at a time!
Updates from me: I have my glucose test this thursday morning. DH and I had a one-day babymoon - we stayed in Niagara Falls last night while my mom babysat since my mom has been visiting for a couple of weeks. It was our first night away together without LO since he was born. And probably the last for another 3 years, lol. I slept 9 hours straight - that alone was worth the cost of the trip!!
I did get a peanut gallery comment in the hotel elevator when a woman said "you must be almost due". And i said "nope, 3 months to go" and she almost didn't believe me! because i guess looked so huge now i think i know when i am due!
cherry / 158 posts
@kiddosc: I didn't sign up for 8 months of this! is your first a girl or boy? I keep hearing boys are harder, which lead me to believe that this one wouldn't be too hard.
@californiadreams: that sounds wonderful!! I'm getting similar comments at work. People are rude. And, if I'm honest, from myself. I keep thinking how can I grow 13 more weeks! My glucose test was last Thursday. It's miserable, but I passed. Fingers crossed for you as well!!
grapefruit / 4085 posts
@californiadreams: Ugh, M is almost 3 and we tried training this summer with no progress. Going to give it another go next month b/c is really like her to be out of diapers before baby comes!
We did some furniture shopping this weekend and are going to finalize things by next week. Going to convert the crib first, get her used to it then move her to a new bed. I feel like there's still time but it's going to go so fast!
My husband and I are taking a weekend trip this week so I'm really looking forward to that!
pear / 1770 posts
@Kelley_lovelikecrazy: I still need to CLEAN! The pantry, the garage, the baby's closet, our filing cabinet. Needless to say I'm procrastinating.
@californiadreams: What a rude comment! I keep getting "Where's your bump?" People are never satisfied!
@fancyfunction: Where are you and your DH headed?
@saboma: I finally had the baby push back at the same spot I pushed on it, like you mentioned a few weeks ago - it was cool!
AFM, I'm starting to get bad lower back pain at night, which is annoying. I have my glucose test this Saturday and I'll be happy to have that behind me.
I'm having a hell of a time booking a doula. They're all being super flaky and not returning my emails/phone calls in a timely fashion, or they're on the fence about whether or not they'll be available for my birth, etc. It's really starting to piss me off, especially since they're charging $700+ for their services. I've seriously been trying to book a doula for over 4 weeks now and I don't feel like I'm any closer than when I started. They're supposed to be relieving my stress, not adding to it!
grapefruit / 4278 posts
@Kelley_lovelikecrazy: He's a boy. We pee trained pretty quickly actually. I just set a timer for a half hour and took him every time it went off, it only took us a few days. Poop was a completely different story. 8 months of fighting him, trying different strategies and bribes, until one morning he just woke up and decided he would poop on the potty. And he hasn't had an accident since.
cherry / 105 posts
@Kelley_lovelikecrazy: I can't believe we have less than 3 months to go!! And it's definitely going to go by fast. Our to-do list is scaring me: buy nursery furniture, decorate nursery, finish reading books about my chosen birth method, plan baptism, install car seat, clean and sort clothes, pack hospital bag, etc. etc. It feels overwhelming, but we're trying to do just a little bit each weekend and I'm trying not to stress out too much!
@californiadreams: Glad you had fun in Niagara! We loved it when we went over the summer. Sorry to hear about the negative comment, though. I've been getting sooo many comments from people: "Are you having twins?" "You must be almost due!" "You can't possibly grow any more!" Well, people, I have 3 months to go, so keep it to yourself! It's definitely annoying and has me worried that I'm gaining too much weight, especially since this is my first I shouldn't be so big. So I talked to my midwife about it this morning. She has been happy with my weight gain all along, but she agreed with me today that I should start being careful and tracking what I'm eating. So I'm back to counting calories and staying away from sweets!
@ms.line: Oh yeah, definitely have lots of CLEANING on the to-do list as well. The work on the bathroom should be finished tomorrow, so I'll finally be able to do a deep clean of the whole house and not worry about contractors messing it up again!
So cool that you had baby push back! It's the most awesome feeling! I've been feeling it a lot, and DH is feeling it too, so he's really enjoying that. He's been talking to my bump a lot, and it always makes baby move around, which is so cute. I think baby has settled into a position now, though; there haven't been any flips or somersaults in the past couple weeks, just jabs and kicks. The good thing is, feet are up, butt is in the middle, and head is down; so hopefully it'll stay that way for the next 12 weeks! It's really funny, when baby kicks in the upper right corner of my uterus, it hits a really ticklish spot for me and makes me jump every time.
Definitely some lower back and hip pain for me as well. I'm seeing a chiropractor tomorrow, hope that helps!
I'm also wondering if anyone else is experiencing really sensitive/painful skin at the top of your abdomen, right over the bump. It's been happening for a few weeks now, and is getting worse and worse. My skin feels like it's on fire, and I can't stand the fabric rubbing on it. It's worse when I sit down for a long time, and sometimes even hurts internally. My midwife said it's probably just stretching of the skin, and everything being squished underneath, and there's not much I can do about it. I'm not looking forward to 3 more months of this!
But as long as baby is healthy, I'm happy!
cherry / 158 posts
@saboma: that happened to me with my first. Found out they can sit on a nerve that controls the feeling in just the skin of the top half of your abdomen. Went away by 32 weeks, but not positive when. It's really uncomfortable.
@kiddosc: that's what we are doing, and its going no where. Day 4 and we haven't left the house and are with her 24/7. It's getting exhausting. I was prepared for three days of this but not longer.

How's everyone feeling? We're almost all in our third trimester! (I've just got a few more days, myself!)
I've been super emotional; I seem to cry at the drop of a hat. My grandfather was just moved into hospice care, so that's probably not helping any. He's the only one of my and DH's grandparents who is still alive, so I'm still holding out hope that he'll make it to late February to meet the baby, but that's probably unrealistic. On a happier note, I just found out I passed my glucose test, so I'm pretty stoked about that (among other things, I didn't want my holiday eating impinged upon!).
cherry / 105 posts
@ms.line: I'm doing alright. Still dealing with this upper abdominal pain, but midwife said it's nothing to worry about and nothing can be done. So I'm doing lots of stretches and trying to lie back as much as I can.
I also started seeing a chiropractor last week, which has been super helpful for my lower back and hips! It's amazing what a few adjustments will do! I'm going to see her a couple times a week through the end of the pregnancy, I think. It's been helping with being more comfortable while sleeping, too.
I'm officially in third trimester today! Can't quite believe it! Still lots to do...and with the holidays coming, not sure when I'll do it all.

@ms.line: sorry to hear about your grandfather, that will be sad if even doesn't make it, especially with the holidays. I will keep him in my thoughts.
I am feeling okay. Officially in my third tri as of last tuesday and i feel like it automatically translates into more discomfort.....like with bending over to tie my shoes and cleaning up after a toddler! the extra cleaning is something i didn't have to deal with last time! other than that though i can't complain. it's even been a while since my last headache i had my glucose test last week and it tasted worse than i remembered. oh well, i get the results next week, hopefully all is good. congrats on passing yours!
@saboma: welcome to the third tri!
i do feel like i am really on a count down now, it's crazy. all this time i have been saying it's going so slow, and now suddenly it seems around the corner and i still have so much to do to our house! I have 8 weeks of work left, so that is exciting for sure!

@ms.line: I'm sorry to hear about your grandfather.
I hit 26 weeks today. We spent the weekend in Baltimore and walked about 11 miles on Sat - at one point I got very uncomfortable but drank some water and felt rejuvenated.
Tomorrow is my GD test but my parents and M are dropping me off and we're going for lunch at the diner after (so at least I have something to look forward to after drinking the orange stuff!)

Hope everyone (in the U.S.) had a lovely, relaxing Thanksgiving!
To my great surprise this morning, I noticed milk stains on my nightshirt for the first time! Sure enough, my milk has come in, and a little bit is coming out when I squeeze! It's such a miraculous and weird thing. Anyone else experienced this yet?
pomegranate / 3411 posts
@saboma: I did! Not stains on my shirt but for a couple of days, I felt not only that my boobs were bigger but heavier. The same feeling that I haven't had since the early days of nursing DS1. So I was curious and squeezed my nipple and liquid came out! It looked more like colostrum than milk. Was weird because I was totally unaware in my first pregnancy of this at all.
pear / 1998 posts
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
@saboma: I didn't realize milk could come in this early! None for me yet, but I'll have to watch out!

@TemperanceBrennan: i remember reading in some pregnancy books that you can start leaking colostrum in your third tri! so weird, i know.
cherry / 105 posts
@californiadreams: Yeah, I've read the same thing in several places. And I stand corrected, I called it milk in my post, but it's definitely colostrum: clear liquid tinged with yellow stringy-looking stuff. I guess I just think of anything that comes out of there as milk!

i am 30 weeks today! 10 weeks to go! suddenly i feel like there is no time left to get everything done!!!
how is everyone feeling this week? I had a good appt with my midwife today. starting talking about different options for labour and what i can expect. she said if no complications, the latest she recommends letting me go before induction is 41 weeks and 3 days. I also need to start taking iron pills. My glucose test was good though!
