Cluster feeding night #3! Hopefully this will be the last session and she will go down. Getting tired of this.
clementine / 824 posts
Well, we made a trip back to the ped's because the projectile spit up continued and I was afraid she wasn't putting on any weight b/c she wasn't keeping anything down. Turns out we have the total opposite problem. Em has gained a whoppin' 13 oz since last Saturday. I was shocked!
I guess the issue is that I have a lot of milk and a really fast letdown, so she's taking in a whole lot more than she can handle. Now I just don't know how to slow her down. I'm trying to burp often and do smaller, frequent feedings. Hopefully this helps some, but so far we've still had some issues. I just can't stand seeing the poor girl look so miserable.
We are going to see the LC on Monday since she has gotten lazy (and pain inducing) with latching (especially on one side) and there is still the debate of whether or not she is a little tongue-tied. I'm hoping they can also give me some help on how to manage my mega-flow.
If we can't get the hang of this and get better control of how much milk she is taking in,, I am seriously considering going to pumping only - but I can't help but feel like a bit of a failure if I do. I hate to be chained to a pump, but realistically, I will only be BF'ing until I go back to work in mid-Feb. So I think I could make it work until then.

@JessLC: How often are you feeding when she cluster feeds? And how long does each session last?
squash / 13764 posts
@SLR: I am totally lurking on this thread but just wanted to suggest that if you have a fast/forceful letdown, you can let some spray into a towel/burp cloth until it slows before LO latches on. That should make the flow more manageable for her. Good luck
grapefruit / 4006 posts
@SLR: every hour from 6-10pm and the sessions last for maybe 20 mins but with all the burping and whatever its like continuous. Not too bad but I'm so tired by 8 pm, all I want to do is go to bed.
For the fast let down, the reclining position is good...gravity works against you so baby has to suck more to get the milk out. And can I say NICE JOB mama!!! 13 oz in 5 days?? Crazy good! Dont feel forced to bf. Do what you need to do for you and your lo! Not a failure if u exclusively pump!! Its still breast milk! The whole breastfeeding thing puts so much pressure on new moms, and it makes it that much harder for us. You're doing a great job.

@SLR: good job mama! I feel like I have a similar problem. It has slowed down since I've just been doing one side at a time. Good luck!

@JessLC: Oh no! Hope you have an easier night!
@SLR: that weight gain is amazing! You're doing fab! Don't feel bad if you pump exclusively, it's still breastmilk, it doesn't matter how she gets it.

About to put A in her sleepsack and moses basket and pray she sleeps there and not on me!
Here's wishing us all a restful night with easy - and short - nursing sessions!
blogger / pear / 1964 posts
@JessLC: we are totally doing every hour from 6-10, too. I nurse and nurse and nurse. I've tapped all my DVR'ed shows and use up the battery in my phone. I'm getting good at eating one handed.
Struggled again to get the Trikester to sleep after 11:00 PM and 2:00 AM feeding - he's always waking up when we put him down. Did a little reading, and apparently it takes infants at least 20 minutes to leave the active sleep stage when they first fall asleep. When they're in the "active sleep" stage they wake very easily - if you wait, you're going to have more luck transferring them to a different sleep environment. Holding my breath - but seems to have worked. Put milked up Trikester in swing for 25 minutes and then transferred to the Rock and Play. He's been asleep there for over a half hour - which is a half hour more than he slept independently all night yesterday.
Crazy babies! Hope you ladies are getting some sleep!

Hope everyone is having a restful night too!
Our nights go back and forth between good and bad - sometimes she goes down after a feed/change and sleeps for a couple hours... Sometimes she's awake and fussing the whole time. Tonight has started out well. I fed her from 1045 to 1115 and she slept alright while my husband watched her, then again from 130-2 when I took over for the night. She slept in her swing from 230-5 and after this last round of feeding/changing she is laying awake but quiet in her crib (in which she actually slept for the first time today!). So cross your fingers for us that she falls asleep soon and stays asleep for a few hours.
She tends to be a better daytime sleeper so like you @petuniasandpearls I'm hoping she switches that up soon!
I thought I would want her in the room next to our bed in the pack n play but over the last couple weeks we stopped using it in there at night. She's a loud sleeper too and when she would just be making noises or if she actually starts fussing we both would wake up and it just stopped making sense for both of us to have crappy sleep all night when at the least we could each get some good sleep separately.
And 10 minutes into writing this the crying started and after another diaper change (so much poop!) and some walking and rocking, it's already 645 and little miss is nowhere near sleep. Looks like she might stay awake through to another feeding and then, maybe, she will go down and give me a few hours.
On the same topic, how many of your SO's have gone back to work? Hubs goes back Monday and I'm hoping our nighttime routine ends up working out. I'm planning on doing the baby-tending from about 1am to morning so he can sleep enough not to be wrecked all day. I'm more worried about nighttime and sleep with him going back than I am about being alone with her all day!

@Mrs. Tricycle: some good advice I got this week was make sure the new sleep environment is warm so it doesn't shock them awake, something like s hot water bottle before they get in could work. And put their bedding with you for a bit so it has your comforting smell. My sister used to stuff crib sheets down her topfor an hour but she said it worked a treat.

@lindseykaye: Did your little lady go down after that? Sounds like she's keeping you on your toes!
Hubs starts a new job on Monday so will see if anything changes then. I love your idea of getting your DH to have her till 1, I might try that!
pear / 1992 posts
@travelgirl1: Nope! But my husband got up and soothed her and changed diapers while I slept for an hour until 8:30 when I fed her again. We were all up for the day from then on and after fussing for half an hour, I fed her again at 9:45. She was awake but happy until 11:15 and is still sleeping now at 12:45.
I try to wake her to learn this is daytime by feeding more frequently and letting her sleep as long as she wants at night but we never get the long stretches then like we can during the day. It's not forever though and we'll all work it out eventually.
The hubs staying up with we works great for us (in theory) because he's always stayed up later than me to at least 1am. He'll be more tired from taking care of a baby and all sorts of things but I hope this works out!

After cluster feeding, lo slept for a four hr stretch last night!
He's been fussy and not sleepy this am though...
Bfing is grtting btr eaxh day, got a nipple shield for my left breast w the flat nip and now he feeds on both. Although it takes a bit to latch between switches.
How is your pp recovery going? I had rough first couple days w episiotomy pain. But swelling is down. Im off tyl3 and just taking motrin. The best is being able to sit up and down without wincing! Makes taking.care of the babe so much easier...
clementine / 824 posts
@hilsy85: Thanks for the tip. I'll definately try this.
@JessLC: I attempted the reclining position last night, but I'm not sure I have the hang of it. Does your LO breathe really loud when in this position? I'm going to ask the LC to show me the right way to do this one when I meet with them on Monday.

Hi ladies! Things are okay here in the HW household but figuring out all of this stuff is crazy hard. She's losing weight too quickly and my milk isn't in so w e are supplementing with quite a bit of formula for now. Breasts feel very warm and heavy today so I'm hoping that means milk is on the way! She's also a little jaundi ced so we had to take her back to the hospital to check her levels. We will hear back on that later today. Just trying to keep my head above water! Terrified about handling all of this when DH and my MIL go back to work next week, but hopefully the next few days will get me prepared to handle on my own. Just love her so much and want her to be well cared for.

@mrsjyw: My recovery has been surprisingly good. I also had an episiotomy and apparently a 3rd degree tear on top of that. (The doc didn't mention this part, one of the nurses in the pp dept did.) I took motrin once when in the hospital but nothing since. I feel you on the pain from going from sitting to standing and vice versa...that sucked. My bleeding was also really bad for the first day, then got to be pretty light for a few days, and then started up a little heavier again. I'll be glad when that part is done....I'm so over feeling like I'm the one in diapers.

@highwire: Sure sounds like the milk is coming. That is how mine felt at first before becoming more tender up towards my armpits. Then, all of the sudden there it was.

Last night was an okay night...baby was pretty fussy between midnight and 3am, but then woke to feed at 6am and then at 945am, so I did get some sleep.
My husband had been off all week and is working part time next week. I've been handling the nights for the most part, except for the occasional diaper change/snuggle. He takes her after around 7am so I can get a few more hours of sleep. He also takes her in the afternoons so I can get a nap. He does everything around here, so I'm not looking forward to him going bac to work...
5 days PP and I thought I'd be off of the strong drugs by now, but I still need them. It's frustrating because I don't have bad tears, just a lot of small ones.

@highwire: we supplemented with formula for a day before my milk came in too! i had one day of bad engorgement from the iv swelling/milk coming in and used frozen veggie bags to ice them and had dh massage them down. the next day milk was in and they were soft again supply has been picking up since!
@slr: that's exactly how my pp bleeding has been too! it's even heavier during feedings too!

My husband is also on baby duty until 1:00 AM, when I take over. I just got a nice afternoon nap in while he visited with his Mom. He has a second week of vacation - soo glad he's able to spend so much time with us! Keeps me sane. Dreading having him go back to work.
Good tips about the warm bed and mommy smelling sheets!! I will have to give that a try!

@highwire: I think lots of us on here have done at least a day of formula supplementing before milk came in, it will really help her weight! Sounds like your milk will be here tomorrow though.
@mrsjyw: the first week of c section recovery was hell on earth but doing really well now. Hope the pain decreases soon for you!
@lindseykaye: good idea on going back to bed for more sleep, I do that all the time, really helps!

So... All the pelvic pain ended up being an infection. I'm now back in the hospital on antibiotics and I can no longer breastfeed due to the medication. My MIL will be watching Lily tonight and I'm just devastated...

@kml636: I hope you feel better soon! Can the hospital at least let you use a pump to pump and dump to keep up your supply for when you get out? I'm glad you have your MIL to help with your little one.

My little guy is one month old today! I can't believe it. He decided to celebrate by being extra fussy and refusing to nap for several hours. Luckily my mom was already planning to hang out with us for a few hours. She held him for me until he went to sleep so that I could eat something, do laundry, etc. It was so helpful. I think I will try to have her come over at least one day a week to help like that because even a few hours of an extra set of hands makes such a difference.

Although I had my nightly meltdown, I did manage to make dinner for the first time since giving birth. Chicken noodle soup!
DH gave the Trikester his first bottle of pumped milk. Holy cow he downed it like a champ! think I read that newborns typically eat 2 oz per feeding. Does that sound right to you? I think we're going to try to do 1 bottle a day - if I can keep up with pumping...
cantaloupe / 6630 posts
@ChelseaRose: wow that's gone quick! I bet it was great having your mom over, it's amazing what you can get done in just an hour of not holding a baby!
@Mrs. Tricycle: ha yeah they do gulp down bottles don't they? A used to take 2oz but now I give her 3 or even 4 and she takes it all. I love giving her a daily bottle to make sure she gets one good feed into her.

Thanks everyone. I'm feeling better already, hopefully I can go home tomorrow!

Just had a good cry. Oh the hormones!
@travelgirl1: @mrs. Tricycle: I'm afraid to give him.a bottle because it.was rough getting him back on the boob after formula feeding for a day before my milk.came..in... :(((
Napped for two hrs today while LO was asleep. I almost feel.more tired from the extra sleep! The irony....

@mrsjyw: I hope you enjoyed your good cry! I had several today.

@kml636: How are you feeling? Hope you're getting plenty of rest.
@mrsjyw: PP are something else, eh? I think I have a good cry every other day at the mo, usually when I feel guilty about something. With the bottles, it might be worth trying one here and there so you get a break? I know what you mean about not wanting to create fussiness though, we've been very lucky A hasn't been confused with nipples so far.

@kml636: glad to hear you are doing better! Are you home now?
@highwire: did u hear back about the jaundice yet? L had jaundice too and had to go to the hospital to lay under the bililights for one night.
We are back in the hospital too. L has had an abscess on her arm for the past 2 weeks that hasn't gone away so we are getting her some IV antibiotics for a couple nights. Poor thing had to get the IV and a spinal tap sniff. She has had more IVs in her life than I have. No sleep at all last night for me because its a shared room and baby next door was up for 3 hours last night fussing and the nurses are in and out of the room every 2 hours.
