@Circusbee: That's actually a really good substitute. I might have to have some hot chocolate in your honor tonight!

@loopedd: Enjoy! (and don't forget the extra whipped cream - it's very important )
clementine / 933 posts
@loopedd: @Circusbee: I've never been a fan of whipped cream - I always ordered my Starbucks drinks without it, and always scraped it off of pies, etc...the other day I fixed hot chocolate and would have killed someone for some ReddiWhip. So I'll join you in the hot chocolate and whipped cream tonight!
I'm having a hard time tracking down what maternity leave actually looks like for my organization. I work for a ministry that is sort of on our own, but we're also part of a much larger organization. Our benefits and payroll come through the larger organization, but they don't seem to be able to answer my questions about leave. It's super frustrating. I haven't gotten snippy with them yet, but I'm close. The other issue is that I have a million work projects going on right now, so I don't feel like I have the time to try and track down any answers!
My glucose test is on Thursday, and I'm so hopeful that I will pass. My sister had borderline gestational diabetes, and while I'll obviously do whatever I need to for a healthy pregnancy and baby, I'd love to not have to deal with that

@HeartAbandoned: I feel like we're getting to the point were we have to figure out the logistics of birth/leave/etc and it's so frustrating that so often it's hard to get a straight answer. I was asked to fill out a Disability Leave notice for my job, even though I won't be getting disability payments, and I'm looking at the form thinking... I went to college, why can't I fill this out?? The way it's worded seems set up to confuse you....
This hot chocolate party is growing... next year, we'll add some Kahlua Good luck with the glucose test!!

@HeartAbandoned: When is the glucose test supposed to happen? My midwife didn't mention it the last time I was there, but I thought it was supposed to happen soon...
blogger / clementine / 750 posts
@HeartAbandoned: I have my glucose test in four weeks—good luck! I had an early one about a month ago and passed, so I'm really hoping I pass this one, too.
Had another appointment today and it was great. I was worried about my weight gain, but I'm apparently right on track, which was such a relief to hear. These midwives are just amazing and so reassuring with everything. At my next appointment I do the glucose test and set up tours of the hospital and all that jazz! AND my husband should be home for it, which is the best part!
clementine / 933 posts
@Circusbee: This will be my 24-week appointment, and this is the non-fasting 1-hour screening. If I fail this one, I'll have to go back and do the 3-hour fasting test. They just told me when I was in there for my anatomy scan at 20 weeks that they'd be doing the test at the next appointment, and here we are! I see an OB/GYN practice, so I don't know if it's different for midwives? I have a friend due in December who sees a midwife, and her screening was just a week or two ago, so hers was definitely later in her pregnancy than mine will be.
@loopedd: RIGHT?!?! I feel like employers should just have a policy, in writing, that clearly explains the benefits: You can take up to this many weeks, we'll pay you for up to this many weeks, you do or don't have to use your paid time off, etc. It seems like the policies should be straight-forward and readily available. This is apparently wishful thinking, though.
apricot / 390 posts
@HeartAbandoned: Hmm, I wonder. My next appt. is next Friday at 24 weeks, so I'll ask about it then. I know they routinely do the test, so it's a little weird that they haven't scheduled it yet, but I guess maybe they routinely do it a little later if you don't have risk factors or something.

@Mrs. Rabbit: Your appointment sounds awesome - and I'm so happy for you that your husband will be there for all the fun stuff coming up!
@Circusbee: My next appt will be at 24 weeks -- they mentioned that they'd set up and prep me for the glucose test then. I think doing it between 26-28 weeks is pretty normal!

I have my first appointment with the specialist on October 30th. I'm glad I got an appointment that day because I'm taking the day off for Liam's Halloween party at school that morning and it will be nice to not have to take more time off of work for the appointment. I'm nervous, I hope the area they are concerned about has grown and that the baby has!

I've missed so much! Work has been so crazy the last few weeks, but is starting to wind down and I'm looking forward to catching up on how everyone is doing
Let me first say that all this talk about hot chocolate makes me want some, right now!
@HeartAbandoned: Good luck on your glucose test! I also am trying to figure out what maternity leave will look like. I'm a graduate student and sometimes things here (in my advisor's lab, in particular) can be really flexible and unofficial, and I even talked to her about it and she had no idea what to tell me about whether I'd be getting paid or not, or if I needed to fill out any forms. So...I am also very confused.
I have an appointment with my midwife this Friday (at 23w4d), and last time she didn't say anything about the glucose test, so I guess I'll have it at the next appointment, which will be 28 weeks? I hope they don't surprise me with it this Friday!!
@Baby2Feb15: Congrats on your girl!!

Hey Ladies! I wanted to get some thoughts on this or see if anyone else has done it. I had my 2 ultrasounds probably will not have any more. There is local place that does 3D/4D ultrasounds, it is very professional and I read great reviews. You do not need your Drs permission but do need to approve you are under the care of a Dr.
I really want to get this ultrasound so I can see what she looks like in 3D ( they did it once at the OB but i was 18 weeks). Anyone else have done this or think its okay without running it by my Dr first?
kiwi / 536 posts
@mtex14: Oh yeah! I found out the sex at one of those elective ultrasound places and it was awesome. We plan to go back at least once more. It has no effect on the baby and there's really no reason the doc would need to know!
blogger / pomegranate / 3201 posts
@mtex14: I know a lot of people who go to those places and love them.
blogger / grapefruit / 4836 posts
@mtex14: our only reason for not doing one of those is the money i dont think theres any reason to ask your doctor. I am having monthly ultrasounds this pregnancy due to some higher risk stuff, so I dont think there is any harm in having more than 2.

@Mrs. Lion@mrs. tictactoe @loopedd: Thank you all so much! That really makes me feel so much better! I felt like I was being sneaky for some reason. Now I am going to book my appt!
blogger / clementine / 750 posts
@mtex14: I'm totally getting one!! Actually, it's going to be a surprise birthday gift for my husband since he missed the other ultrasounds!! We never did a 3D with my first, and I thought they were kinda creepy looking, but for some reason I *really* want one this time! I'm really excited
@Kbee: They probably won't surprise you with it since you have to drink the juice within a certain time period beforehand! I'll be 28 weeks at my next appointment when I'm doing mine!
grapefruit / 4235 posts
@mtex14: My dr. is really against elective ultrasounds and for some reason our local hospital is too. I just sent in my paperwork to register and my first post-welcome email is basically "these places are awful and dangerous." But I know that many OB/GYN practices offer elective ultrasounds so.... if you want one, go for it.
grapefruit / 4235 posts
@Kbee: you have to fast for the glucose test, so they won't surprise you with it.
blogger / grapefruit / 4836 posts
@dagret: yikes! Do you know their reasoning? (One more thing to worry about...sigh...)
grapefruit / 4235 posts
@Mrs. Lion: I know my dr.'s take is that they don't know IF ultrasounds are harmful, so if there's no medical reason for it, why risk it. I DO know that if there is a medical case for extra U/S monitoring, he is supportive of that.
kiwi / 536 posts
@Mrs. Lion: This is just my take, but in the same way they can't do rigorously controlled studies for things like caffeine intake (because it would be extraordinarily unethical to have one group overdosing on caffeine for the sake of science), I would guess that while the confirmed risks are really really minimal, a doc would be likely to say, "Why risk it?" Because someone will always be the person to run out and get daily elective ultrasounds if the doc says they're harmless, right? I've also heard of the fear of people using them to replace prenatal care, which is CLEARLY a bad idea.
Like caffeine, and most (not all) things in pregnancy, I'm in the moderation camp here -- that 2 extra ultrasounds over 40 weeks won't hurt anything

I am finally feeling this little girl wiggle! Yay! 21 weeks this week...its about time! Haha
So let me just share my PSA for the week. If you go to PT for pelvic pain and improve so much that you get discharged, dont stop doing your exercises at home! I completely reverted back to where I started from this week. No fun. Apparently the exercises are important or something doh.
Happy to see you ladies are all doing well!
blogger / grapefruit / 4836 posts
@dagret: @loopedd: that makes sense! I didnt know there was any question about the safety of ultrasounds though. I will probably have 10ish during this pregnancy....that makes me a little nervous. But my ob is pretty cautious, so i guess if she feels they are warranted I shouldnt be concerned.
kiwi / 536 posts
@Mrs. Lion: So happy your girl is moving!! And DEFINITELY don't be worried about the ultrasounds. It's more that potential risks are unknown, nothing close to definite. If you need them, they are the best thing for you to be doing!!
blogger / clementine / 750 posts
@Mrs. Lion: @dagret: @loopedd: Last pregnancy I had roughly 15 ultrasounds (I was high risk and had NST's twice a week, and once a week included an ultrasound to check the amniotic fluid). My daughter's just fine. I'm actually sad I don't get more this time. It was so reassuring to see her so often!
@Mrs. Lion: YAY for feeling wiggles!!!!

ladies i had a hot choclate with whipped cream and thought of you all! still raining up this way, hope everyone is feeling good! we actually took a hospital tour as the only night it is offered on in the next three months we had plans. Felt crazy to be there already.

@Beanie132: being pregnant at this time of year means taking hospital tours//birth classes at very early times! I don't know about you but our hospital didn't offer anything from mid November through late January. At least it's our 2nd time around this time and I don't have to do that again!
kiwi / 536 posts
@Beanie132: Oh that reminds me I had one last night too -- salted caramel hot chocolate from Dunkin Donuts. Sooooo good! Hospital tour, so exciting. I can't wait for that!

we are actually really struggling with our hospital to get answers about January birth and newborn classes. It's been like pulling teeth to get them to respond on what their schedule for january may be so we can figure out if we have to spread some of the classes out into december. Blah, its really hard because DH works four days on 2 days off so the earlier we know the more likely he could work to get it off. end mini rant...<3

Some of my students (and students who hang out outside my room who aren't mine) are driving me nuts today. I am counting down the days until Winter Break. I'm supposed to come back for a month after that, but I don't know if that will happen.
