@Smurfette: Henry's birthday is tomorrow. I remember really well what all this was like last year. I don't see the point to go in say, 'Yup, okey dokey' and let them measure. I don't count kicks but the baby's moving fine and I haven't had any pains or concerns so why make the trip? And why give my MIL the satisfaction of having Henry? I want my son

@adira: So sorry...I was typing with my stupid kindle before and didn't realize it was correcting your name on me. That thing drives me nuts! It's really only good for reading and entertaining ds with angry birds!
@shopaholic: 2 hours? That's just in the waiting room? How awful. That sort of thing really irritates me.
I don't think I'll have another blood draw. Not sure what they would need it for. This is part of the reason I love going to the birth center. Less routine stuff that I don't wanna deal with, lol.
I'm really looking forward to the bi-weekly/weekly appointments. ONLY cause I didn't get to that point with my son. It's a new experience for me. I think I would hate it more if I was going to a regular OB (and having to wait hours each time). I love going to the birth center. I've been there a couple times where there's a labor going on, or had just finished and it's so neat. They're in the birthing rooms, but all the midwives buzzing around so excited is really fun to watch!

@katiew92081: Actually about 1 1/2 hr in the exam room - so at least I could lay down when I wanted to. I understand though, sounds like it was a stressful afternoon for the Dr. and the office.

@Arden: I think I had most of those tests earlier in my pregnancy... I'm not sure if they do them again or not. I do need them to do a CBC though, so regardless of their plans, I'll be requesting that one.
@katiew92081: haha, that's okay about the name! I follow our thread pretty regularly and usually catch when someone's talking to me, even if they didn't use the reply feature!

@Adira: I did most of those earlier as well. I just have the strep screening on my visit overview list.

@NaturallyCathy: Too bad you can't bring him with you! My birth center welcomes people to bring their kids to their appointments.
I do think you shouldn't skip too many appointments, just because of the urine screening. If you developed pre-eclampsia and didn't know it, that could be really serious. If it weren't for the urine tests, I don't think it would matter if you skipped.
@Adira: I had them earlier as well, but they check again at the end to make sure you didn't contract anything during pregnancy. It's common practice here, but maybe not at all offices.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Arden: Ohh, interesting! My guess if my office doesn't usually do that (or they're terrible at keeping me informed)!
honeydew / 7589 posts
@Adira: I think there are three blood draws total for most clients at my birth center.
One at their first appointment (CBC, STD screening, Hemoglobin, etc), one at 28 weeks (glucose screening, hemoglobin), and one at 36 weeks (CBC, STD screening).
I think so anyway.

My coworker just asked me if I was going to be here on Feb 21st, cause they want to throw me a baby shower. So I guess I need to hold off buying everything I need till after then. I probably need to add more stuff to the registries as well. Exciting!
watermelon / 14206 posts
@arden: My birth center encourages siblings, too. Hubby and ds came along with me to my glucose test, and they kept my son occupied with toys, stickers and everything. My midwife even let him use the doppler on my belly and squeeze the pump for the blood pressure cuff. He loved it.

Ugh, I am SO groggy today! I slept ok last night, and I just woke from a nap, but I just feel so hazy. It's nice to know the end is near!

@Smurfette: Ooh, exciting! When is your due date again? I'm already wishing my shower (on the 17th) was sooner - I'm getting more uncomfortable and not liking to dress up anymore.... lol
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: Oh yay!!! That's so sweet of your coworkers!!! I'm PRETTY sure my coworkers won't be doing that, but they're all men, so I don't think they think of stuff like that, haha.

Has anyone else's feet swelled up? I had no swelling until this week, and then little by little they have become huge. Ugh. I'm going to have to buy a new pair of shoes for my shower!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Arden: I don't THINK my feet are swelling... my shoes still seem to fit. Although I feel like my calves and ankles are getting fat... that could just be me eating too much though.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Arden: I am due March 17th. I am in accounting, so we can't do anything the first 8 working days of the month and then my boss is out of town. I guess the 21st is the first day that seems to work with the people they checked with.
@Adira: I wasn't sure if they would. They threw me a wedding one, but that was when I had a boss that did all kinds of stuff like that. This boss no one, but I guess the other female in my department and my old boss are heading it up. Super sweet!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Arden: My feet aren't swelling by my hands are. And I feel like my face is getting puffy
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: That is so awesome!!! I think coworkers tend to get more FUN items though than stuff off your registry. You'll probably get clothes and diapers! Although hopefully you get some other useful items too! So fun!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Adira: I am hoping they do a collection like the wedding shower, then one person went and did all the shopping. Some just did their own thing though. But yes, I fully except to get lots of clothes. I need to make sure there are plenty of smaller items as well as some big things left.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: Ohhh, that would be a good idea if they do that! Hopefully they will! Then you'll get some useful items off your registry plus some fun stuff!
GOLD / grapefruit / 4555 posts
@Arden: They don't do regular urine tests for pre-eclampsia so there really isn't a reason for me to go other than my doctor's funny. And I'm sure the nurses and front desk would get a kick out of meeting Henry but I find it unrealistic to expect him to be well behaved for thirty minutes to an hour just so I can get checked out. Besides, I go to these appointments alone. No one would be able to hold him while the doc was doing his thing.
@katiew92081: They don't mind children if they're older, but as stated above, it's too much to ask him to hang out with me for half an hour to an hour and then there's no one to hold him while I'm getting checked out.
Again, jealous of all these baby showers Happy for you all though. Going to have to start planning a 'Look Hoo's Here' party, me thinks, owl themed and everything...
watermelon / 14206 posts
@arden: My feet aren't swelling, but my hands are. Yesterday I woke up and struggled to get my ring off. Later in the day they felt better, so I put my ring back on...and woke up again with it stuck, lol. So, I guess I'll leave it off.
@smurfette: Yay for work showers! How sweet! I don't think my work will throw me one, cause I only work like once a month, haha. (I'm a temp for them)
@naturallycathy: yeah, I can see how having him there would be more of a hassle than anything.
I love the owl theme idea! So cute!!
honeydew / 7589 posts
@NaturallyCathy: Wait, they don't have you pee in a cup at every appointment? I've never heard of any medical provider not testing for sugar and protein in the urine at every appointment.
GOLD / grapefruit / 4555 posts
@Arden: Vanderbilt apparently likes to be different. Just about every time I go in, I get my blood drawn for one test or another but no, I don't have to pee in a cup. I ask. They check. They say no. I go on about my day.
@Smurfette: @katiew92081: I think owls come to mind best because we had an owl cake topper for our wedding, Henry went as an owl for Halloween (I was a pregnant fall tree for him to sit in), and my mom's talking about making him an owl cake for his birthday party next Saturday:

Sans bow, of course. If we make it, I want it to be brightly colored, like blue and green, and without the almond feathers. Maybe yellow piped on feathers.
honeydew / 7589 posts
@NaturallyCathy: Wow, that's strange. I wonder why they don't? It's such a simple and cheap test to prevent such a serious complication, I don't know why they wouldn't. Hmm, well then I guess it doesn't really matter if you skip appointments then. All they are doing is weighing and measuring you then, and checking your blood pressure (which you could do at home)?

Just called my insurance and breast pump is 100% covered, no restrictions (price, kind)! Score! Now I just have to call a company to order one. No clue what kind to get. What is everyone else using?
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@NaturallyCathy: LOVE the owl-themed idea! So cute!!! And I LOVE that cake!!
honeydew / 7589 posts
@Smurfette: Dude, if you have no restrictions I would get the best one on the market! Not sure what that is though... Medela Freestyle maybe? Make a thread and ask what the best one on the market is!
GOLD / grapefruit / 4555 posts
@Arden: Yep. Last pregnancy, with my midwives, they did the same thing except they went ahead and did the urine test every time. While I enjoyed my midwives, I didn't like the actual birthing experience with them and since I've been through this once before, I just decided to go with a regular doctor (who won't even be the doctor delivering my kid). I've become detached from the whole situation, mostly because I have something else to worry about. Or rather, someone else. I take my vitamins, I get my sleep and my exercise, I do all the tests they ask me to do and I don't worry about it. They always call to let me know the test results are great, the baby's heart is beating beautifully at the appointments, why fuss?

@naturallycathy: Wow, cool cake! Your mom must have great talent! I always try things like that, and it never really turns out the way I imagine it, lol. DS and I often attempt things like that and laugh as we're eating it cause it's so ugly, lol.
GOLD / grapefruit / 4555 posts
@katiew92081: Even if it doesn't turn out picture perfect (which it won't, even though we'll take lots of pictures of it!), it's the thought that counts. It was either that or a boring sheet cake. I'll take a funky homemade owl cake any day.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: Oh my gosh, that's awesome!!! Congrats!! I'm using the Phillips AVENT BPA Free Twin Electric Breast Pump, but only because I'm borrowing it from my SIL, so I can't say whether it's better than others!
GOLD / grapefruit / 4555 posts
@Adira: We're just a 'hoot' over here in Tennessee... No, seriously, we are. I love me some owls I have owl dish towels, owl coffee mugs, owl necklaces and this fantastic box covered in owls. My first ornament to my husband was a carved owl. And then I made him a felt version.

Well, I thought my shower was gonna be pretty small. However, I got the weekly email from my parents church, (which is where my mom is having it) and apparently they have invited everyone that goes to the church! I used to go there, and then moved too far, so they know me there. Just was unexpected to read that in the email. I better make sure my registries look decent, lol.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@katiew92081: Oh wow!!! Make sure you have plenty of items on your registry!!! It's unlikely that everyone from your church will show, but probably way more people than you originally thought! But yay for a big celebration!
bananas / 9973 posts
@NaturallyCathy: What? That's so weird! It's the first thing they ask me to do every single visit! Strange since it is such a cheap and easy test! Owl-themed party sounds like a hoot!
@Smurfette: YAY for your breast pump and no restrictions! I know the Medela Freestyle is more expensive than the PISA, I think it's better for the WOHM. I don't remember what you are going to be doing? I'm going to go with the Medela PISA even though it's cheaper because I'll be a SAHM and I want to be able to plug it into the wall and not rely on batteries. Everyone says Medela's are the best though, even the lactation nurse at our hospital BF class. She said they're super easy to use too! hth! And SO NICE about your work shower!
@Arden: I'm not sure since I've been wearing mostly boots, which are looser than regular shoes. Try keeping your feet elevated and wear compression stockings?
@katiew92081: Sounds so nice! I bet you'll get some cute hand-knitted stuff - or at least that's what I think of when I think of church ladies!

So I'm both nervous and excited for this weekend! My best friend is coming over to do my maternity photos!! I have noooooo idea her skills as a photographer, but she's going to use my dSLR and I'm going to show her examples of what I'm looking for so... hopefully they come out okay, haha. I have a 50mm prime lens and I'm probably going to make her keep the aperture around 1.8 (I love bokah!) so... we'll see!!! I just hope I don't become a control freak and be all bitchy if she's not very good, haha!

@shopaholic: I am going back to work at 12 weeks So portable is key. Work has a room, so I can get an electric and not have to worry about batteries.
@Adira: That sounds like so much fun. Post pictures!
