@NaturallyCathy: Yikes! I hope you're able to move before the baby comes!!! Hopefully the discomfort lets up a bit soon so you're not just miserable for the next few weeks!

@Adira: Meeee too. I just hope that we don't start to actually go into labor today or tomorrow. There's just something odd about the thought of delivering on Valentine's day.
Of course now that I say that, it'll practically fix it...

@adira: We're not even installing the carseat until we get to the birth center, lol. We're not sure which vehicle we're going to end up using when I go into labor, and the midwives on staff can help dh get it installed correctly. So, we've got it in the closet and we're just gonna grab it and go when it's time. Planning on winging it, lol.
We're not doing anything for Valentines Day. We'll buy each other a cheesy little gift, but dh has a crazy week at work going on, and he'll get home not much before 7 each night this week. So, we're just keeping it mellow. With me being sick, I don't think I would have energy for much, anyways!
@smurfette: bummer your dh has to go out of town! I'd be really worried, too! Is there a way for him to get back in case you go into labor when he's gone?
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@NaturallyCathy: Now you've jinxed yourself... I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you the next couple days so you can make it through Valentine's!
@katiew92081: I love your strategy!!! I didn't even think about which car we would take - I just assume we're taking mine, though maybe I should ask Hubs, haha. It's too bad we haven't gotten our second car seat base - then I could just install them both and not worry about it. Oh well - I'm still betting we're taking my car since my car is bigger. I kind of envision having to drive myself to the hospital too (I'm the primary driver when it's Hubs & I). It'll be interesting experience if he actually drives me!

@Smurfette: I've definitely coughed/sneezed and then had to sprint to a bathroom! And sorry to hear that your husband has to go on a business trip soon. I bet he'll return with plenty of time.
@cheert16: What a cute bump! And I absolutely love your sweater.
@cheert16: In terms of nursing bras, I bought two stretchy ones at Target that I will wear in the hospital and then later as a sleep bra. They are sized S/M/L/etc, so there is room to grow (as it were). A week or so after birth, I plan on going to a store to get properly sized for some fancier bras. I've also heard good things about those Undercover Mama faux tank tops (they are essentially a long tube of fabric that hooks onto the straps of a nursing bra), so I want to check those out as well.
@shopaholic: Glad to hear your appointment went well! That's great that your baby is head down. You are almost there!
@katiew92081: Sorry to hear that you are sick! It's tough having cold symptoms on top of all of the pregnancy side effects.
@NaturallyCathy: Sorry that you had to deal with such an unsympathetic nurse! Hopefully those symptoms that you are having are positive indications that things are progressing well, at least.
@shopaholic: Our V-day tradition is to stay in and make pizza -- so that's what we will be doing for the 4th year in a row! I got my husband a card, but we normally don't exchange gifts. (Plus, I am saving up my money to buy him a nice watch when the baby is born. I want to get it engraved with something special.)
@Adira: Man, I have been having baby brain too! I have these moments where I can't remember where we keep our plates (or whatever) in our kitchen. Haha.
I just had another appointment (37w3d), and everything looks good. Baby is still head down. Blood pressure is good. Measurements are good. Baby's heartbeat is in the 140s. The most exciting news is that I tested negative for Group B Strep, which means that I can spend some more time laboring at home.
We also talked a little bit about what happens if I were more than a week overdue: something that I would prefer not to think about. Haha. My practice doesn't do cervical checks until the very end, so I don't have any information in that regard. I am just going to remain optimistic that my body will do exactly what it needs to do when it needs to do it.
Other news is that the CD of images from our maternity/anniversary shoot is in the mail, and our photographer put up some shots on facebook! We are so happy with them. We ended up hiring her for our newborn shots as well. Here's another one of the pictures.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@mole: Oh my gosh, I LOVE that picture!!!! Definitely get some of those pictures framed!!
Glad to hear your appointment went well and everything is looking good! I think my doctor's office might be like yours and not do cervical checks until later, though I'll find out on Friday at my next appointment. If you are more than a week overdue, will you have to be induced? Is there a set deadline for when the baby has to come? I haven't talked to my OB about this at all yet.
I've heard some places only let you be a week late, but my friend said my OB wasn't like that because she was induced when she was two weeks late (but that was also 3 years ago and I know some things at our office has changed since then).

@Adira: Thanks! We feel really lucky that we found this photographer through a somewhat random internet search.
My practice is fairly hands off, provided that baby and mom are still doing okay. At 41 weeks, they refer moms to the hospital for a NST and an ultrasound, just to check the baby and placenta. These checks are then repeated every 3 days. Generally, the midwife said that they prefer to start inductions before 42 weeks for women with favorable cervix positions and at 42 weeks for those women without favorable cervix positions since they've found that it leads to the lowest number of c-sections. (Of course, this is my takeaway from a conversation that was just introduced at this point. I'm sure I will get more detail if this scenario applies to me.)

I just wanted to point out that according to the ACOG, the range of normal is 37 to 42 weeks. 40 weeks is simply the average. You aren't technically "overdue" until 42 weeks 1 day, even though many doctors start using the phrase the day after your EDD. The ACOG doesn't recommend induction unless there are specific indicators.
Mayo clinic - "Although your due date might seem to have magical qualities, it's simply an educated guess about when your baby is most likely to arrive. It's perfectly normal to give birth one to two weeks before — or after — your due date. In fact, your pregnancy must continue two weeks past your due date to earn the official label of overdue pregnancy, also known as postterm pregnancy."
Just because a doctor recommends induction earlier does NOT mean that's best for baby. Your doctor does not "let" you go past - it's your labor, not his. You can refuse induction citing the ACOG's statement if there is not a clear medical reason for inducing. Induction carries risks and shouldn't be used unless there is an actual reason for it.
*end rant* Sorry. lol
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@mole: Interesting! I should find out what mine does!
@Arden: Thank you for the information!!! I actually would prefer not to be induced assuming everything is still fine with the baby, so I'll definitely keep this in mind if I do end up going past my EDD! Thanks!
apricot / 373 posts
@Arden: Thanks for clarifying. I should have said "more than one week past my due date." Anyway, the decision to induce is one place where I probably will end up deferring to the judgment of my midwives. I feel confident in their recommendations, particularly since their level of care and concern for me and the baby has been so great! (That and the fact that they have considerably more experience with birth than I do!)
What I have found interesting is that both my midwife group and some of my doctor friends have been talking about the fact that there have been several recent studies that indicate a higher risk of c-section for inductions performed at or after 42 weeks as opposed to ones performed between 41-42 weeks. Anyone else heard about this? I need to track down the specific studies.

@arden: In general, I have issues with doctors saying they'll "let" you do anything. The #1 reason I'm at the birth center with midwives is that I prefer to have the control over my pregnancy. I "let" an OB help me with my first pregnancy and it was poorly managed, and I gave birth 32 weeks early. This time around I've been in charge of the whole thing and I'm almost to term.
When I went in to the hospital for my stomach bug, to get some fluids, the midwife on staff there was surprised that I even was going to a birth center, given my history. I told her I've been tracking my sugars the whole time and she said, "I can't believe they just LET you take charge of your blood sugar like that." I was stunned. No one's gonna tell me not to take care of myself, lol. That, and I *did* go to the hospital for fluids when I was sick. I obviously have the right mindset to get help when I feel like I need it!
But, I have problems with doctors and the med field in general. Even just this morning, I went to get my cold checked out and ask what I could take, and I got a lecture for not getting my flu shot...even though I didn't have the flu!
Anyways...all that to say, I'm with you on that rant, lol.

@katiew92081: We got 2 car seat bases so we'll install both bases. I just figure it wouldn't take much time at all, and then I can take them to go get inspected anytime I'm near the fire station.
@mole: Ooh! Yay for being Full Term now! Great picture again! What are you planning to do with your pictures? I'm thinking maybe one framed in the nursery and one small one in our room maybe? IDK. I think it's more for the memory of this time period in our lives.

@mole: & @Arden: My OB office said they only do the stress test if you go over a week late (if everything else in the pregnancy is normal). So by that statement, I assume they let you go to be a week late at least. No talk of any kind of induction yet.

@katiew92081: Well there are tons of flights a day from NYC to Atlanta. And it is only a 2 hour flight. So he could be home within 4-5 hours, depending on flight schedules. I am going to assume labor is going to take longer then that.
@mole: Great picture!

I'm glad I tried to install the car seat base in my car today! It's a bit confusing and once it doesn't fit in my small car behind me or in the middle - or else my knees will hit the front.
I guess my only option is behind the passenger seat - which isn't ideal. But I'm glad I figured that out now and now later!

@shopaholic: We have a small area in our hallway where we currently have wedding photos. The plan is to replace some of the wedding photos with our maternity photos and others with newborn photos. I will also make some photobooks using the maternity and the newborn photos, both for us and for our families.
Re: the carseat. We have two bases too. In our smaller car, it is behind the front passenger as well (there's no latch in the middle position, and we wanted the carseat to be on the curb side for loading/unloading).

Weird thing: I sleep on my right side usually. But, I do flip back and forth from right to left throughout the night. BUT, wheneever I flip to my left side, a big acid burp comes out! It's so weird! I feel so bad for hubby, cause he's on my left, so he gets blasted when I flip. I've gotten to where I look to see which way he's facing before I flip, but he says he's never noticed me burping at him before, hahaha.

Yay! Baby Smurfette is head down!!! Doctor said that I am measuring right on track, good heartbeat, cervix was closed. She said I shouldn't worry at all about DH traveling the next two weeks. I was also super excited I only gained .9lb in the last two weeks.
I made appointments for the next two weeks, but they will just listen to the heartbeat and measure me. No cervix check again till 39 weeks.
I did ask their policy is about going past the due date. She said that at 40 weeks they will do an ultrasound. To check the baby and fluids, but if everything looks ok, they would wait another week, and then probably induce at 41 weeks.

@shopaholic: Oh, good thing you tried it out! I'm curious how well our car seat will fit in my husband's car because he has a smaller car (Toyota Corolla), but I feel pretty confident it will be fine in mine (Honda Accord). What kind of car do you drive? I suspect my husband will end up putting it behind the passenger seat - that's what my best friend did with hers, who also has a Corolla.
@Smurfette: Awesome news about the baby being head down!!! Sounds like everything is right on track and baby isn't going to be super early or anything, which is good for your husband's travel. And congratulations on your weight gain - you're doing better than me! I've been gaining like crazy this last trimester - ugh!
watermelon / 14206 posts
@smurfette: That's great! Maybe your hunch about her being overdue will be right!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Adira: Well given all the V-Day treats at the office today, I probably won't do as good next week. I was really surprised cause I have been eating a ton, I feel like, and not that great. I have a Honda Accord too. I can't find in my manual where they recommend to put the car seat. I have a 2009. DH and I usually always drive my car on the weekends. So we haven't looked yet for his car, Infiniti.
@katiew92081: Yeah I know towards the end I am just going to want her out but I really hope she comes close to her due date. My Mom swears she is coming on her due date, for a St Patty's Day baby.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: I haven't even really looked at my car yet, though I've heard that cars newer than 2005 have the latches for car seats - do you know if yours does? Mine's a 2007, so I'm guessing it should, but I think I need to break out the manual to figure it out. I'll do that this weekend and hope for the best!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Adira: I remember seeing the latch buttons in the backseat and in the manual. I guess I just need to pay attention to where the Latches are. I know that if your car doesn't say to put in the middle seat then to put on the drivers side. Cause you are more likely to get hit making a left turn, so that way it doesn't directly hit the car seat and baby.
persimmon / 1223 posts
@katiew92081: I switch between left and right sides too - mainly because I've noticed that my hips start to get really uncomfortable and I notice that I get a bunch of heartburn/acid reflux nastiness when moving around in the night too - no big burps but it's pretty gross...
@Adira & @Smurfette: We installed one of the two bases for the car seat this past week - I think both our cars are just a little too old to have the latches for car seats (kind of a bummer) so we had to belt it in which wasn't hard - but it seems like the latches would have made it super easy!
nectarine / 2631 posts
@shopaholic: I just watched a youtube video to try and figure out how to install our seat. We are going to try and get both bases in my and DH cars this weekend and then leave the carrier in the house until its delivery day! I am pretty confused about where is the best place to install them (using the latch behind the driver or passenger seats or using the seat belt in the middle seat)- but I suppose once we start we can figure it out...

I've been so bad at keeping up with replying to you ladies. But my husband just bought me a new computer (I had to send back my work laptop) so I should be back on track soon and not just on an iPhone.
It seems like in these last weeks everyone has been keeping busy! Hope you all continue to stay well. I am doing laundry and preparing the nursery in between lots of naps
We did a tour of the birth center this week and it was all so real! Excited butterflies, for sure. We also just placed our order for the newborn cloth diaper rental. I'm so excited for those!!

I find it a little funny and endearing that DH keeps coming home from work and immediately jumps in the shower so if we have to go to the hospital, he'll at least be clean. Still hanging in there although for a little while tonight I wanted to break something in frustration because no position or walking around or water was making the pain go away. It has since abated but I think me and DH are in agreeance - this one isn't waiting until March. It's going to come soon. If it doesn't I will be highly surprised.
watermelon / 14206 posts
@naturallycathy: That's funny about your dh. I'm having some weird braxton hicks, but they're radiating from my back. They only come about 3 times a day, so I've decided not to get dh worried about it yet. He's having a rough week at work, I don't need him distracted with this, if nothing is happening.
Keep us posted!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@NaturallyCathy: still feeling the same? Sorry! When is your DD again?
GOLD / grapefruit / 4555 posts
@Smurfette: March 4th but the doctor said he didn't really expect me to make it. He figured I would go into labor after my next appointment with him - and he may still be right, since my next appointment is Monday. So not looking forward to waiting until after Monday if this keeps up.
GOLD / grapefruit / 4555 posts
@katiew92081: I'm sorry about the weird BH contractions It's mostly in my hips and pelvic region, only twinges in my back. I've rarely had back troubles during either pregnancy so I guess that's what's bugging the crap out of me. This constant grinding, stretching, pushing pulling pain. It not unbearable, it's just annoying.
If this is what labor is supposed to feel like in the days and weeks before, I'm over it. Give me the pitocin, I liked the short road through hell better.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@NaturallyCathy: Well at least your DD isn't too far off so baby won't be here too early. I hope your symptoms ease up a bit!!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@NaturallyCathy: haha, your husband is funny, but it's kind of sweet that he wants to be prepared!
Oh my gosh, I think I experienced some intense round-ligament pain today! I was going to stand up from the couch and I got the most intense pain near my groin/leg! It was so painful!!! Anyone else experience any of that?
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Adira: I have pain every time I get off the couch, but it is all my back.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: Ugh, back pain sucks. I have consistent back pain throughout the day, though certain positions tend to hurt less. Does yours just strike when you're getting up, or is it all the time?
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Adira: My back feels ok most of the day. At work as long as I have a pillow between my back and the chair, it doesn't hurt so bad. But the couch makes it hurt every time. Unless I prop up like 3 pillows behind me. Laying down in bed, sleeping on my side, always makes it hurt. When I get up in the middle of the night to pee, I have to stand by the bed and put my hands on my back for a second before I can even walk.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: Aww, I'm sorry! It sounds like your back pain is worse than mine. Mine definitely comes on during the day (my chair at work sucks), and the couch definitely doesn't help, but lying on my side (or half on my side/half on my back) tends to make it feel better. And I usually wake up in the morning and it doesn't hurt anymore, so I get a fresh start each day.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Adira: Jealous! Mine usually feels better after I start walking or a nice hot shower. Getting so bad that I almost dread going to bed at night. Which sucks cause I am so tired!
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: Do you think you could maybe try sleeping on your back, but with it elevated? Like prop a bunch of pillows so that you're more reclining instead of flat on your back? Would that help? Or can you sleep half on your side, half on your back? I put a pillow behind me and sort of lean against it so I'm angled - it seems to help me, not sure if it would work for you.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@Adira: I do prop myself with a pillow sometimes and sleep on my back. Just hard for me to sleep that way but it does help some. I just can't wait to sleep on my stomach again, it really is the only way that is comfy for me.
wonderful pomelo / 30692 posts
@Smurfette: haha, yeah, I hear you! I'm excited to be able to lay on my stomach again too, although I feel like after all this time being pregnant, it will also seem weird!
