@junebugmama: No that's fine. Is that true even for newborns? I was not planning on this being a sling I'd use for years. I wanted something for this summer when she's tiny and it's hot. I read a bunch of sites and they said batiks were appropriate for newborns-1year in single layer and then beyond that you need to double or linen/thicker fabric for toddlers. But I actually got the end of the bolt so I have extra and could double it if I needed to. I was just hoping to making something really lightweight for year 1?

@Mae: It's tested to hold 11lbs based on it's weight per square inch. If you're looking for something single layer and light weight then you would want to go with a linen.

Although batiks are appropriate for baby wearing, nothing that is sold at Joanne's, Hobby Lobby, or Wal-mart is a true batik.

@junebugmama: Interesting, what is the difference between a true and "fake" batik? I've never heard of such a thing. And where do you find true batiks then? Also, where can I find info about what different fabrics are weight tested for? Regardless, I can just double layer this, no biggy!

  4. junebugmama

    nectarine / 2019 posts

@Mae: basically the only true definition for a batik is the way that the pattern is made. It's traditionally used on a woven fabric where an oil/wax is used to block the die from permeating the fabric. A thinner type of cotton, such as this one from Joanne's, isn't woven, and nor is the pattern made by oil/wax. It's made on a machine.

Some fabric houses sell it, amazon, and I've bought a bunch during travels in ethnic style gift shops for instance.

Right on the bolt of the fabric (not on every bolt in Joanne's but the majority) it will give you the weight of the fabric. Then you can calculate the oz it will hold and what it's good for. The batik you found is located in the quilting section. Nothing for quilting is ever safe for baby wearing. Basically if it's print is only one sided, then it's not safe.

Fiber content, weight and the style weave are all factors you need to pay attention to while choosing a fabric. Weight wise you want to stay in between 5.3oz and 7oz. The only time you could sway from this is if you were going to use a gauze or osnaburg to make a wrap, but that's a whole separate thing.

@Coopersmama: DD (17m) calls me Mommy now, I would assume (hope!) it will evolve to just Mom eventually! I would definitely be working up to the end if there was money involved, I'm super lucky to not have to think about that part.

@Mae: @junebugmama: so interesting about the sling fabric, who knew? I want to try a legit one (just had a seven sling for DD) and maybe another type would wear and feel better then that one!

BBQ steak for dins tonight, we had awesome weather here today, but inside all day as DD was sooo badly sick.

Got nothing baby related done this weekend, but did get some stuff done around the house.

@Beebug: aw, sorry your lo is sick! It was nice here today too! We were busy bc we had maternity photos which I'd planned as an in home shoot since weather was supposed to suck. So we spent all morning cleaning. Then it was nice so we did some indoor and some at the park in our neighborhood. Cannot wait to see the pics but zomg so tired after cleaning then the shoot.

Oh also, finished the nursery.. Last two DIY projects hung! (Mobile and canvas. Although we just hung the mobile for pics. Going to have my dad hang it more securely before lo arrives)

@Mae: Love the finishing touches on then nursery! That canvas looks like it must have taken forever to make, I love it!!!

@Beebug: we had our first bbq steaks of the season last night too! So excited that our bbq is finally accessible and not burried under 3 feet of snow!

We didn't get anything baby-related done this weekend either. My sister's baby shower is on Easter weekend so I'm in full on planning mode for that. Once that's done, I can focus on this baby again

@cookie_dough: Thanks! It took a while but it was super easy (punch flowers out of book with craft punch. glue to canvas), so I just did it sat night while we were watching tv. My fav kind of diy-- easy and almost free. Also, fun that your sister's shower is coming up!

@Mae: I love what you've done with the nursery!!! Now that you're finished do you want to come do ours?

Hope everyone had a great weekend! We were super busy with house projects and visiting family. Today I have another growth u/s and I wouldn't be surprised if the baby is measuring as big as DS when he was born. I feel absolutely enormous now which I never really did with DS. And I still have (exactly) one month til my due date!

@skipra: Hope your u/s goes well!! And thanks, I would love to! lol. Life would be awesome(r) if I didn't have to work and could just do crafty projects for myself and others all day haha.

@skipra: good luck with the ultrasound. I had a short one today, but no updated weight check. I just love getting a glimpse of the little guy. I'm opposite. I feel smaller than last time. I think this one will be smaller than DS though still on the big side.

This week just got really crappy DH's grandfather passed away today (we knew it was coming, so it's not a total shock, but still very sad since DH was very very close to him). DH has to drive 10 hours to go to the funeral and will be gone the rest of the week/weekend. I really really wish I could go with him, but I don't think there's any way that DD and I could do the 10 hour drive with him, and flying alone with DD (with a long layover, me having to get permission to fly, etc) would get really complicated. And DH couldn't fly with us, because we can't really afford for both of us to fly AND the airport is an hour from the town he's from so DH would have to pick us up there, etc.

Anyway, long story short, I have to send my poor DH on his own to his grampa's funeral and I can't be there for him, and I have to solo parent for the next 5 days (I can barely solo carry DD up the stairs these days). I will definitely figure out a way to manage at home with DD and can always ask my dad for help looking after her, but I wish we could make it work so that we could go with DH

@cookie_dough: oh man, I'm so sorry to hear that. Even when it is expected, that is still so hard. Especially with the timing issue and you not being able to go. I'm sure everyone understands of course, but I'd feel the same as you just wanting to be there for my husband

@cookie_dough: Oh no. That sounds like a sad and terrible situation to be in. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I just had my appt. Baby is measuring approx. 8lbs. I knew that was going to happen. They are giving me another u/s in 2 weeks and then we will discuss what to do based on size. I am not thrilled.

@cookie_dough: I'm so sorry about your DH's grandpa. Sounds like a very difficult situation. Thinking of you guys.

@junebugmama: Wow that is a big baby. Is everything looking healthy, just big? Have you decided if you will induce for size if they suggest it?

@Mae: @Mamasig: Thanks! Ultrasound went well. They think growth is good so I don't need to go back for another unless my belly starts measuring small. We got to see 3D images of the face and he looks soooo much like DS, it's crazy! Can't wait to see him on the outside!

  20. junebugmama

    nectarine / 2019 posts

@skipra: Ya he's perfect just big. My first was born at 36 and 5 and was 9lbs, so technically this one is growing at the exact same pace. I am not going to panic about induction until my next u/s on the 22nd. If he is 9lbs or less at that point then I won't induce and they won't push it. They just don't want him to get to 12lbs

@cookie_dough: So sorry for your loss and that you cannot be there to support DH. Sounds like you're doing the best you can. I will send good thoughts your way to get through the next week alone.

@junebugmama: Aw hopefully he doesn't get too big!

Had my positioning ultrasound today. Baby is head down and in the position I thought. He/she has been in the same spot for a long while! Measuring at about 6lbs and the tech guessed the he/she will be around R's size. I know it isn't exact but I can certainly hope so. I also did my group b strep test. I get results next Monday and am hoping I am negative as I would like to avoid an IV again. Only bad part was that I started waking in the middle of the night with painful heartburn that tums couldn't help so I was given a prescription for Zantac. I hope it helps! Other than that still no waking to use the bathroom- score!

Thanks everyone! DH just left and will likely be back on sunday. He felt so bad about leaving us and I feel so bad about not going...but he definitely understands that it would be really tough for us to join him. I picked up DD from daycare today and they suspect she might be coming down with hand/foot/mouth sickness (or whatever it's called) ahhhhhh! She does have a few red bumps around her mouth but seems ok other than that so far. Fingers crossed that it doesn't get worse.

@cookie_dough: I'm so sorry to hear about your DH's Grandpa. I hope you LO isn't getting HFM!

@junebugmama: wow! That's big. Hopefully you will go into labor before you have to make a decision.

@cookie_dough: Oh my goodness, sounds like you're being bombarded right now. Thoughts & prayers to you and DH's family. And to your DD! Hope you don't catch it from her!

@junebugmama: We're on a similar track, it sounds like. I'm not quite there, but last week sono estimated 6.5lbs at 33w5d, over 90th percentile, on track for possibly 10lbs by my due date. Everyone's a little freaked because it's my first and I'm very petite (5'1", small frame). It's annoying to be scared! I want to trust my body and this baby, especially because I've had a healthy pregnancy and normal weight gain, but it's hard when even my midwives are acting a little weird about it. Really prefer not to be induced. How was your labor/delivery with #1?

  25. Mae

    papaya / 10343 posts

@skipra: so cool that you can tell what he looks like! We haven't had any 3d u/s, and haven't had any at all since 24 weeks. I cannot WAIT to find out what our LO looks like!

For everyone having these u/s.... is there some reason? I.e. did they order them in response to measuring off track or something? Or do other practices just do them as part of a normal course?

Just curious because my practice doesn't do any u/s after 20 weeks unless there is a problem/issue they are checking out (this was true at my OB and also with the midwives). They do feel for position every time to make sure she is head down, but no u/s unless I start measuring off track or they suspect some other issue.

  26. skipra

    pomegranate / 3350 posts

@Mae: I've had a few growth u/s because DS was so small when he was born that they suspected placental insufficiency. When something like that happens the risk is much higher that it will happen again so they do a series of scans to make sure growth is normal and doesn't slow down. This baby seems to be growing better and is already measuring the size of DS when he was born so they don't think there is any issue this time. The reason I had a late ultrasound with DS where they detected the problem was because the fundal height was measuring >3 weeks behind.

  27. cheesetomywhine

    pear / 1586 posts

@Mae: I don't think it is normal...my midwife wasn't sure of the position so she ordered one. I thought it was kind of odd since a different midwife had said the baby was head down and really low only two weeks prior but maybe she likes to proceed with caution? Even after my u/s the midwife still measured, listened to the heart and felt for position.

  28. junebugmama

    nectarine / 2019 posts

@anandam: I had a very bad induction, but did have a vaginal birth. That's another reason why I'm terrified of induction. It lasted 74hrs

@Mae: I am only having them because of size concerns from my last pregnancy as well as measuring 3 weeks ahead. I measured on track until 28 weeks.

  29. cheesetomywhine

    pear / 1586 posts

@junebugmama: Oh my gosh no wonder you're nervous! I hope things go a heck of a lot more smoothly this time for you.

  30. anandam

    kiwi / 687 posts

@Mae: My sonos have all been for measuring ahead of dates. Our practice doesn't do many routine ones, either. One early if your dating is uncertain or you want the nuchal translucency, anatomy scan at 20wks, and maybe one at 36wks if they're uncertain about breech position.

  31. junebugmama

    nectarine / 2019 posts

@cheesetomywhine: I had a ton of interventions because they kept leading to more complications. It felt like the circle of doom lol.

  32. Mamasig

    pomegranate / 3565 posts

@Mae: My OB's office typically does not do any over 20 weeks unless something comes up. With my 1st I was measuring big at 34 weeks so my doc ordered one to check size since I'm small framed. This time I'm getting them weekly because of the GD. Both times she knew the baby's positioning just by feeling.

@cookie_dough: oh no I'm sorry you couldn't be with your husband and that your baby may be getting sick. I'm sure he knows he has your support wherever he is though. Praying that your LO is and remains in good health!

@Mae: I get ultrasounds at every visit. It's the norm both at my current and past obgyn. This one has a 2D machine. The last one has a 3D. Man these ultrasounds were the highlight of every visit!

  34. sungirl

    apricot / 309 posts

@Mae: mine says they only do after 20 weeks if they have a reason but they usually find a reason. I had one at my last appt because the Doppler wasn't working but that was on the crappy machine in the room by the dr rather than the good one the us tech uses. Last time I had one for size and fluid check near the end when they were considering inducing for blood pressure.

  35. cookie_dough

    kiwi / 619 posts

@Glitter: Thanks! She actually seemed ok this morning when she woke up (other a tantrum because we couldn't find her elmo socks!) Hopefully we have avoided the dreaded HFM.

@Mae: I had a few u/s at the end of my pregnancy last time because DD was breech, so they were just checking to see if she had turned, but other than that they aren't standard. This time I think that I'm supposed to have one to check on growth since I'm possibly having a vbac (if I go into labour before May 21). They will want to make sure he's not too big. But my OB hasn't mentionned it at any of my recent appointments. I have an appointment Thursday so I will ask then.

@junebugmama: I hope you don't have another bad induction like last time and that baby decides to make an appearance on his own!

  36. Mae

    papaya / 10343 posts

Interesting! So sounds like for the most part they only do them if they have a reason. I don't necessarily WANT more ultrasounds because they are super spendy, but feels like everyone else is having them

  37. junebugmama

    nectarine / 2019 posts

    @cookie_dough: me too!
@Mae: my insurance covers the ultrasounds 100%. So I don't mind getting to see baby a couple of extra times, however, if it cost money, hearing him would be enough lol

  38. Mae

    papaya / 10343 posts

@junebugmama: ugh, jealous! My anatomy u/s cost us like $750 and the follow-up to check my placenta position at 24 weeks cost $450. I want to see LO but I can wait a few weeks if it will save my hundreds of dollars and is not necessary!

  39. junebugmama

    nectarine / 2019 posts

@Mae: oh geez! That's expensive! Friends of ours actually found a a place that was separate from their ob that did them for $100. They were able to invite other people in to see too, like a movie theater

    @Mae: beautiful nursery

@cookie_dough: I am so, so sorry for your loss

Sorry I missed so much. I only have a couple weeks left at work and it us just so crazy to keep up at the office and online

I believe I had mentioned of a rash that I had gotten on my chest that my OB wasn't sure what it was and advised me to see my dermatologist. Well, I have something called Puppp. It isn't contagious or harmful for the baby. Its just a rash that appears in your last trimester with your first pregnancy only. It isn't that common. Very few women get it, so that's why my dermatologist thinks that my OB didn't know what it was. Oh well! It will go away on its own after birth, so for now I just have to deal with the itchiness. They could have given something for the itchiness, but I didn't want to take it.

Hope everyone else had a nice weekend. I will try to keep up with the thread
