@Mae: It's foolish, and like, not even close, $22 a month more for dog insurance per month, and that's like.....if his leg were to break, not for 1mil in coverage, oye.

I think about to have kid #2, I am on like budget, money in order frenzy. I am a fool and think the worst, heaven forbid. Since having DD we moved to a house more than double the value of our last house, I wouldn't want DH to have to move, plus I want my income replaced for him + kids until our mortgage would be covered (at that point wouldn't need my income) so yesterday's appointment I had to think about some not so nice things. I don't want DH to ever have to deal with all that insanity if something were to happen to me. I have work coverage and a separate policy already, but was never sure I had enough, and glad I had yesterday's appt to beef it up and for the reassurance that if I go, we'd be okay. I feel stupid that I didn't have enough, but glad I am now covered.

@Mae: what a tough decision to have to make I was "sort of" in the same boat last time (i.e., a hard decision to make without much advice from my OB). He was willing to deliver DD breech, or do a c-section. And he wouldn't give me any advice either way, just told me the risks of both. It drove me nuts that he wouldn't just say "You should pick X". So I ended up just going with my gut, taking advice from some friends who had already had kids, and doing a bit of reading online. This time I was in the same boat again, because he wouldn't recommend a v-bac or repeat c-section...just told me to pick what I wanted! Can you wait and see? I know she said you would have to discuss it at your next appointment, but if baby isn't here by 41 weeks, can you wait till then to decide?

We just got a new A/C this year! It will be heaven compared to last summer. Ours broke down in the middle of July, and it was AWFUL. We had DD's birthday party mid-July, and everyone was boiling. The icing was melting off the cupcakes!

I can hardly keep my eyes open today. I think that DD is extremely over-tired from being sick/not sleeping well. She had a full-on screaming tantrum from 5h00 p.m. till 8h00 p.m. last night, and it started up again first thing this morning. And really not just whining...full-on screaming the whole time. When she went to bed, I had my own tantrum because I was so exhausted hahaha

@cookie_dough: do you know what kind your ac is? I feel like there is so much more to it this time since we'll be here longer, so annoying. I just want someone to make the decision for us, but not in a salesman of AC type way, haha!!

We moved here late August and there were some brutal days here the weekend we moved and into September, I don't know how we did it, but no way could we do a typical July without it, and I keep reminding myself of that because right now I don't want to splurge!

I also can't keep my eyes open, I need to go have a nap, I am getting a stare down from the dog who does not understand that there is sideways rain outside.

@Beebug: ugh life insurance is one of those things i know we should get more of but we just... haven't. We just have a policy through DH's work. And it isn't much. Like enough that either of us would be okay for a few years and have plenty of time to "figure things out." But not so much that it would pay off all our debts and make life easy street until LO leaves for college. Which is probably what it should be.

@cookie_dough: sigh. doctors. lol. I mean I get it. Medicine is both science and art, and unfortunately there are just no black and white answers usually. It's all a judgment call. But I do have to make a decision before next week. The hospital I'm delivering at is really big/busy and scheduling is an issue there apparently. They basically need a week to schedule any non-emergency induction. So at 40 weeks I could schedule any time between late 40-42. But by 41 I'll basically be at the limit of only being able to schedule for 42 unless there was a clear emergency situation.

@Mae: Yes, I made easy street happen yesterday if I were to go. I am on DH now with what his is, neither of us even know what he has....we are brutal!

@cookie_dough: Yes, and was like $5k to do through the builder, so insane. Part of me would have preferred that convenience, but not when it comes double the price it would cost us to do it on our own.

@Beebug: oh great...that means the sideways rain is on it's way here...which means no park for DD after daycare...which means more tantrums! noooooooooooo!!!

@Mae: ah, gotcha on the not being able to schedule that late Such a tough call. I'm definitely no help since I've never been induced or had a natural labour...but hopefully baby girl decides to make an appearance very very soon and the whole debate will be moot!

  10. Mae

    papaya / 10343 posts

@cookie_dough: yes! I mean realistically MOST women go into labor before 41 weeks anyways. so most likely this is all a completely pointless freakout/exercise. But on the off chance it isn't, i feel compelled now to google binge and make an informed "best choice" for that potential eventuality.

@cookie_dough: I am on my own with DD later today too, being stuck inside blows now that we have had a taste of outside. She would live out there if she had it her way, lol.

The rain is not nice, like.....pretty brutal, so yes....this is your warning, it's coming, lol.

@Mae: That sounds like my practice. They originally told me they hold off on inductions until 42 weeks but when I asked at my last appointment they said that most women don't want to wait that long so they are open to doing it after 40 weeks. We won't discuss again until next week probably but I've already decided that if I don't go into labor sooner and if there is nothing to necessitate an earlier induction, I will opt for 5/16. I'll be 41 + 2 at that point which gives the baby plenty of time in my opinion and it's a Friday which will give DH an extra weekend of his paternity leave. If I'm super uncomfortable I may just beg for the induction on the 9th. I guess because I've already had one and the hospital is a lot further from our new house I don't mind the thought of induction this time. I was a wreck about it last time though.

  13. Mae

    papaya / 10343 posts

@skipra: we might be due date twins! If I decide to go to 42 I think I"ll actually probably pick 5/15, which is 41+4 for me. It's 2 days earlier than the LONGEST I could go, but I feel like 2 days probably won't be the difference between natural and induction at that point and I was thinking it would be nice to have her born on 5/16 because it works out best scheduling wise. They do inductions at night at the hospital so I'd check in 5/15 and have her 5/16 probably and DH and my dad would just have to take off 1 day of work to then have the whole weekend after with her born.

@Mae: @cookie_dough: I am in a similar boat with a doctor who won't tell me what he thinks is best, but is giving me the option of c-section or attempting vaginal birth. There are pros and cons in my particular case, but it is infinitely frustrating that he won't guide me with his professional opinion! Isn't that the entire point of seeing a medical professional?! We have a final ultrasound tonight that will hopefully guide our decision-making process since it seems we are in it alone.
@mae: I am sorry that you find yourself in this position... you should absolutely go with your gut and do what you believe to be right. I have heard such differing perspectives on the 41wk vs. 42wk. issue, and you clearly are informed and have done your research. You will make the best choice for Fiona!

@gingerblonde: good luck on your u/s and I hope that it gives you some confidence in making a decision one way or the other. I do understand (I guess) why they are always hesitant to tell you what to do. but that doesn't make it less frustrating haha.

And yea I don't know. I think my gut still says that I have been so lucky to have had an easy road through pregnancy with getting pregnant easily and then having a pretty low-symptom and 0 "weird stuff" pregnancy. Like everything seems to have been perfect all along and it makes me feel like my body knows what it is doing and I should trust it and give it time. I just feel like I need to re-convince myself this is best for baby and not just for me.

So I'm heading out for a doctor's appointment and I had taken my shoes off because my feet were swelling and they started to hurt. Now I can't get my shoes back on!!! I wonder if my doctor will think I am weird if I show up in socks

@Mae: That would be funny if we had the same induction due date. Actually 5/16 is our wedding anniversary so I was hoping NOT to have him on that day but if I go over 41 weeks I don't think I will care! Plus that would be a nice anniversary present, I guess?
@Beebug: Pet insurance is so insanely crazy. We never got it when we had our dog and just figured that we'd use our emergency fund worst case. Also that stinks about the A/C. We never had it before and got a window unit last summer for DS's room. Our new house has central air and I can't even fathom the idea of it! Of course our heat is still running even though it's set at 55 so at this rate we'll never have to use the A/C.
@cookie_dough: Aww so sorry about the tantrum. DS started in last night too. We just had to do an early and extra long bath time - was the only thing that calmed him down. So frustrating!
@gingerblonde: I hope the ultrasound gives you some insight. I'm sure you will make the best decision.

@cookie_dough: At this point I'm in my Sanuk yoga mat flip flops every day all day, even at the office. Don't care! They're comfy.

@Mae: My thinking is schedule late -- the 15th sounds good -- and most likely baby will come on her own before then. My doctor will only let her patients go to 41 weeks as a rule, so if it comes to that I'll probably schedule an induction sometime during week 40.

A woman I work with was due April 9, but went all the way to 42 weeks at which point she had to be induced, and by then the baby was too big and got stuck and she had a c-section. I think he was born on April 23 or 24. So that kind of sucked that she had a c-section but otherwise he's a big healthy boy.

I managed to squeeze my feet in and head to my appointment...which lasted about 2 minutes since I just had an appointment on Thursday. When the OB was feeling the baby to make sure it was head down he said "wow...good sized baby"...soooo another big baby on the way here I'm thinking!

@cookie_dough: aw, glad appointment was good.

Okay so I emailed the office to clarify because I felt like I should've pushed them for an actual recommendation this morning. And also asked if I could have a membrane sweep at 40 to get things moving so this would have less chance of even coming up. They said they have to explain the risks of waiting but their general recommendation is that for low risk moms the nst/u/s at 41 weeks is a good indicator of whether it is safe to wait until 42. so if i want to book for 42 weeks and then wait and see what those tests say at 41 thats fine (and if they're good-- i'm good. if they're not good, i get induced then based on a real reason). But they support if i WANT to get induced at 41, for whatever reason. But don't seem to think it is a bad idea to wait. so i think i will (wait). Also they said if i'm dilated enough they can definitely do a membrane sweep for me at 40 to try to get things moving. so i think i'll opt for that as well. Feeling much better now. probably could've saved myself some stress if i'd been thinking more clearly this morning and done a better job of clarifying what i was being told.

@Mae: glad to hear that you were able to sort things out with your midwife office! Hopefully that relieves a bit of the stress.

So mystery solved as to why DD has been a HUGE sick grump the last week...she has roseola. The rash finally showed up last night, so hopefully we are at the tail end of it. I'm really really hoping that it's what has caused her awful mood and tantrums. I can't even get her dressed without her throwing herself on the floor and screaming. It's been a super fun week so far I actually took a detour on the way home last night so that we could avoid driving by the park and causing another tantrum because it was too cold and rainy to go!

    Eeee!

@cookie_dough: Good you had a good appointment! Has the gross weather arrived your way yet? I need to look up roseola, meds for it, or just time? DD cracked her 5th tooth, finalllllly! These May babies are going to be popping teeth faster than her, I swear.

@Mae: Awesome you contacted the office, got a good response, and seems like you got a good answer/clarification

@skipra: My parents dog cost them about $25k in two knee surgeries, and emergency bloat surgery. When we got our guy (same breed, lots of pre-disposition to joint issues) we didn't get it right away, and when he was about 8m we had to do a day long of barium xrays and all this awfulness and potential surgery and the next week I got him insurance. I was too stressed. Thank goodness because he had the worst time up until he was 2 years old, the tummy stuff/reason we got the coverage was now pre-existing, but the other stuff made it soooo worth it for us. I'm a peace of mind person, but now it just seems crazy the cost vs. what I pay for me to make sure my family is taken care of if something were to happen, the max dollars the dog insurance would ever put out is like peanuts to the human insurance.

DH gave a little push last night for me to get back on getting AC installed, some of our "issues" over the last few months he has hacked at me for taking too much control, so I have kind of sat back, but last night got the go ahead to have quotes and such done to get this done! DH and I doing ok....mostly better.....I have counselling (for me) again tomorrow. DH and I are taking 15 mins a day to make sure we let out any frustrations, positives, or things we want to talk about, it always turns in to more time, but so long as it stays constructive, I am game. Here's hoping we stay on right track.

Which...funny to switch to next topic, I slept in our spare bed last night alone. I was soooo gassy. Like just air, I said to DH from about mid-aft yesterday it felt like I ate a turkey dinner I was so full, and just had burps and toots (lol) and #2 has not been fun, so I don't know what the heck is up with me, but ew! I didn't eat dins last night, wasn't hungry all night, forced myself to eat a bit this morning, and so far....so good. Lazy day today (ish) and weekly doc appointment at 4pm.

@Beebug: no meds...just time! Usually a fever/cough, etc for several days, and a rash shows up at the end, when the fever is gone. And by the time the rash shows up, they aren't contagious anymore. But I thought all symptoms were supposed to subside once the rash shows up, but she's definitely still a huge grump...hopefully just lingering effects, and she hasn't just turned into a tantrum monster! Haha, I miss our guest bed...we only have 3 bedrooms, so each kid has a room and we lost our guest bedroom For the most part, that's fine...we don't really ever have visitors, but it was really nice when one of us wasn't feeling well to have somewhere to go!

@Mae: glad you got some clarity from the office, and now u have a plan! It's great to have a plan. Plans calm me.

@cookie_dough: sorry u and DD are having a rough week, but glad you figured out the main cause. Hopefully she's back to being a sweet DD soon!

@Beebug: I'm really happy that you and DH are making progress.. and at the perfect time too, just before your LO arrives. Praying that things continue to improve with you both.

I don't think I mentioned this before, but while at the hospital last week the doc was asking about family history and my mom revealed her thyroid issues, as well as the fact that only last month my father found out that he is a sickle cell carrier. He apparently was majorly sick and hospitalized for a while and it was found out in his many tests that he has the trait.
(quick background: my father left me and my 4 siblings and his 18 yr marriage to our mom about 14 yrs ago and since then has chosen to have as little communication as possible with us. Everything I learn about him now is learnt through my aunts/uncles who are still pretty close to us) So learning about his illness and the trait came as a bit of a shock... doc decided to run tests and it turns out I am also a carrier. Now DH needs to be tested because two carriers having a baby can be risky... so we're praying that he isn't also a carrier! On a positive note though, I got my GBS results the same day and it was negative so yayy... one less shot at delivery!

Yesterday was my second to last dr's appointment and the plan was to do the first membrane sweep. No such luck. Cervix is closed. Doc couldn't do a thing up there. I left the appointment disappointed and cried like a baby in the car. It's just scary to have an induction date set knowing that baby has made no progress on his own. My sis who is an OBGYN told me that its nothing to worry about, because if my body is already dilating and producing oxytocin, to be induced and add more oxytocin to my body could put baby's heartbeat at risk as well as increase the risk of a ruptured uterus... so it's just fine to go in for induction without any progress having begun on my own. That calmed me a bit.

Induction is on and set for Sunday morning, May 4th. Doc says baby's lungs are developed and it doesn't make sense to keep me feeling dizzy/faint and risking something serious happen, or even keeping me in discomfort when LO is ready to arrive. I am excited, scared and relieved... such a range of emotions! Next week this time, God willing, there will be a baby in my arms. A real live baby, all formed. Crazy!

@cookie_dough: Oh, by spare bed....I mean spare bed in wide open, unfinished basement, lol. We have 3 bedrooms too, so no more spare room! Someday we will finish our basement, but until then, no spare/guest room....and sort of a problem with ILs from out of province....but I will leave it open as to who's problem that is

@Mae: I had a month of GI issues with #1, so am half prepared for it, but bleh....so gross!! Hope it passes.

@Mae: @Glitter: I hope DH and I keep up on this, we really were talking exit strategies at one point, and we'd both get pretty upset even just talking about it, so like....at that point you have to know it's still worth trying for. I sure as heck hope so anyways, I so don't want to call it quits. Lots to work on, I think we've done a lot of damage, and it will take a ton of time, new habits, and patience, but clearly it will all be worth it if we can pull through.

  29. Mae

    papaya / 10343 posts

@Glitter: aw, hoping your DH's blood tests come back and show he is not a carrier!!! Yay for being GSB negative though! That will be helpful if you go into labor on your own so you're not having to be hooked up to an iv! Also I totally feel you on the whole mixed feeling on induction thing, especially since I know you hope to go med free like I do. On one hand having a date certain that you'll meet your baby by is awesome. And rationally I know that it will be FINE and even if its not what I wanted, it will result in a healthy baby and so that is all that really matters. On the other hand having that date hanging out there does tend to make you a little bit anxious. I woke up this morning and had a pep talk with baby telling her that it was really okay if she'd like to make her entrance now I know we're still a few days from my due date but I wouldn't complain at all because it would mean holding her sooner and being able to stop obsessing about when when when lol.

I have my first "we will start checking you" appointment next week...and OB really wants to get things moving, so I'm wondering if I will have a membrane sweep as well...although I'm not really sure what that is hahaha

@Beebug: Ya, luckily our families live here, so no need to have them stay over usually...except when we go to the hospital to have this baby! I feel kind of bad but I was like "well, if I call you in the middle of the night to come over, I will leave out clean sheets and you can put them on our bed" hahaha...I'm assuming that if I'm rushing to the hospital in the middle of the night, I won't have time to do it for them. But then again, maybe we won't be in a huge rush and will have SOME warning (water breaking, contractions slowly getting stronger...)

@skipra: reminds me that today is an excellent day for a reposting of our current calendar! Last day of April and it doesn't seem any babies are coming today, so I guess most of us will probably really be May moms! I'm honestly a little surprised more of us didn't go early!

@cookie_dough: Membrane sweep they put their finger(s) through your cervix and swirl it around the bottom of the uterus to separate the amniotic sac from the surrounding area a bit. From everything I've heard it is not very comfortable but not really PAINFUL. Also you often bleed a bit after, so if you think you might have it done I'd wear a pad or liner to the appointment just in case. I'd imagine they'll give you a choice about it? I requested one at my 40 week appointment next week.

And here is our May list!!

    "May" Baby Birthdays!!!!
    3/25 - The_Bees_Knees - Baby Boy Rowan (4 lb 11oz @ 34w3d)
    4/13 - Apex - Baby Boy and Baby Girl (5lb 4oz & 5lb 7oz @ 36w)
    4/20 - CheeseToMyWhine - Baby Boy Stephen Michael III (7lb 10oz @ 37w1d)
And for those of us still waiting on our LOs....

@Glitter: I was so closed up before my induction with DS that they couldn't do the membrane sweep either until after the induction was started.

I had my ultrasound last night. At just over 37 weeks, they are estimating that she weights between 7.5 and 8 pounds. She looks healthy, heart rate is good, and she's head down... though not engaged. Fluid levels are good. I have to wait until my OB appointment Friday morning to learn what the doctor thinks, though it sounds to me like I'll just be having a big baby when the time comes.

I have begun my passive induction techniques - I am in such an insane amount of pain on a daily basis that I can't imagine another 2-3 weeks like this - and am thrilled that tomorrow is my last day of work with my awful commute. I am having massive GI issues, and plentiful BH that feel like really bad period cramps with tightening.

@Mae: Thanks for calendar update! I too am surprised there were not more early arrivals!

@Mae: @skipra: @Glitter: membrane sweep sounds...lovely...hahaha. I will probably opt to have it done, since I'm getting worried about baby size/v-bac combo. I would be happy to go into labor sooner than later. I was originally leaning towards repeat C-section, but the closer we get, the more I would prefer to avoid the C-section and not have to deal with that recovery. Perhaps DD's super clinginess has swayed me, since I can't imagine how she would react to me not being able to pick her up after the surgery. My big fear though is that I will go through a torturous labour, and still end up needing a C-section because baby is too big or something.

@Mae: Thanks for the updated calendar! That description of the membrane sweep made me sort of panic a little. I'm not having one or anything (unless they do it at the hospital before induction?) but it just makes me remember all the other things that are going to be happening/coming out of my body in the coming days. At least the two biggest pain-causers are going to be cute, right?

@gingerblonde: I'm sorry you've been in so much pain! I was having major hip/crotch pain, but it seems to have let up a little. I hope you get some relief before delivery. Hopefully the BH and GI issues mean your LO is going to be on her way soon!

Hey ladies- I have not checked in for a while. Been swamped 'transitioning' out of work. I am working a very, very light schedule now, and today was my last official day in the office. Still on phone and email.

I am so surprised that there were not as many April babies. I was so convinced that I would be early. Turns out the baby is still "in New York, and no where close to the Mason Dixon line" says my doctor, and my cervix is hard as a rock. We had a sonogram today and the baby is measuring 7 pounds 13 ounces. She is heads down at least, so yay for that.
