Ouh, fun! I love talking baby names Love the names you have picked out.

We are team green, so we are narrowing it down to one of each (I'm not the kind of person who can have a short list and just pick when the baby is born). For a girl: Hannah. For a boy: William (after DH's grandfather). William is a done deal, but Hannah is only a "probably".

I looooooove Theodore, but the hubs isn't convinced. He really likes Dean, and I'm meh about it.

For a girl (we're team green), we're thinking Daphne or Delilah. We actually haven't talked about girl names in a long time, so I'm not sure how we feel about those two names right now, ha.

We don't yet know what we are having, but we will hopefully this month. We have a pretty extensive list going, and DH and I agree on literally nothing. He is really rigid in what he likes and not very willing to compromise! I hope that it gets a little easier once we actually know where to focus our efforts.

Love this thread! And the names people have posted so far! We actually haven't really discussed it together yet, but my husband said his preferred method is for me to formulate a long list of all the girl names I like and then he'll chop it down to a short list then we'll decide together from there. He doesn't want to come up with names on his own. I'm not done cultivating my long list but right now it stands as follows (sorry, really long.. but maybe it will give other ppl some ideas haha):

@Mae: Camille, Julia and Holly are on my list as well! DH vetoed Camille (just hates it for some reason, which makes me sad, since it's one of my faves) and Julia (has a co-worker named Julia) but he really, really likes Holly. It is one of the three names that he is on board with at all!

Great ideas!!! They are all so classic and feminine.

@gingerblonde: I have no idea how my husband will feel when he sees the list! I have a feeling he'll knock a lot of names out. I'm iffy on Camille because although I love it, the nicknames I like are Cami or Millie, both of which I worry would sound weird with our last name (that starts with a strong M- sound).

We finally had the name talk this weekend! I had a list of 25 names and my husband only knocked 5 off the list… so we had a long way to go! But through some careful blind ranking we came up with an "elite 8" lol (Also its sort of 9 but two are so close we are treating them as one and if we pick it we'll decide between the two).

@SMAR11 - I also loved William, but didn't want to have him go by Bill. I have an uncle Bill and work with 3 guys named Bill. Will is a great nickname if you can get it to stick!

@whodat: Totally stalking your guys' name board (I'm a July 2014 momma), and just wanted to interject that Addison is traditionally a boys name (and is a popular boys name in my family). I was really upset when it was "feminized" and now I feel like I *can't* use it for a boy since it's such a trendy girl name now!

@Mamasig: I like your criteria -- I'm looking for names that sound good in both languages and boys names are really hard (we also have Leo and Gabriel on the short boys list).

@NorCalWayfarer: Not to knock Addison! It's a nice name. But I just don't want my son in 6th grade homeroom with two other Addisons who are girls!

So a weird thing happened at our anatomy scan yesterday. On all of the printouts, it said "Har-low" in the upper corner. No idea what that signifies. But DH took it as a sign that we must name him Harlow. I kind of can't argue with that. But then we went to the SSA website to see the popularity of the name for boys, and it peaked in the 1930s at like number 950 on the top 1000, then since 2009 it has been in the 500s for girls! So his whole theory about how it has historically been a boys name is bunk, because it is twice as popular for girls as it has ever been for boys. Damn you Nicole Richie!!

Also I thought of one last night that I love: Tate. I think of the movie Little Man Tate. It means "cheerful."

So in the last several weeks we've only managed to whittle our list of 8 down to a list of 5 (and when I say we, I mean me, because my husband seems to be putting no further thought into this haha). I just have stupid hang-ups about every name that are holding me back from committing!

Ava (too popular? It was #3 in Ohio and #5 nationally last year)

Clara (will everyone think we named her after YHL's daughter?)

Eva (my husband seems the least enthused about this name, although he has said it's fine if that is what I want. But I want him to LOVE the name-- his favs are Ava, Fiona, and Penelope but he's said he'd be perfectly happy with any of these)

Fiona (no good nickname. Don't like Fi or Nona, and it is 3 syllables so I think it will end up getting shortened to one of those)

Penelope (too much of a mouthful? Does it sound too weirdly ethnic? I worry it sounds spanish which would be weird with our very irish last name. But I love love love love the nn Penny)

Sigh. I'm probably officially at the over-thinking stage.

@Mae: FWIW, I don't think Penelope sounds Spanish. I mean, I know Penelope Cruz is probably the highest-profile person with that name (that I can think of), but I still don't hear it and think, "Oh, they must be Latina." Actually, I've seen a number of sources that suggest that Penelope is a derivative of the traditional Irish name Fionnghuala (how, I do not know). So, in a way, it's just right with an Irish name and works in the root name of Fiona as well : )

@gingerblonde: Care to share what the front runner is?! I feel like I'm in the same place as you. We got down to Fiona, Penelope, and Eva and sat for weeks unsure. I was leaning slightly Penelope, my husband started leaning strongly Fiona. Since he felt more strongly than I did we decided to call her Fiona for now but have agreed I can change to any of our top 3 at any time and I have final say since I'm cooking her haha. (And we both genuinely love all the names). But we're not telling any of our family or friends we've moved from our top 3 until we're sure. And we may not mention it at all before she is born and it's for sure-for sure. I do really love Fiona but I'm having a hard time committing and giving up the other 2!

@gingerblonde: love it! I especially love Claire as a middle name. It was high on my list and I think if we'd decided on Eva she would be Eva Claire because Eva June doesn't sound quite right to me.

And nothing really happened to sway my husband. I think that after mulling over the options for a while he just developed more of a love for Fiona than Penelope. And I think he likes it especially because we have a verrrry irish last name so Fiona really flows well with it, sounds like she'd be just off the clover patch or whatever they have in ireland haha. I agree re: nicknames though. Thats always been my holdup with Fiona is no good nicknames. Penelope would be called Penny.

I can just see a lot of pros/cons for each. For Fiona, I love that it sounds so irish and it is more unusual/unpopular, and that it is my husband's favorite. For Penelope, I love that it has great nicknames, and I like that her initials would be P.J. (penelope june) because those are my mom's initials and I just think it would be a fun family connection, especially since June is a family name for my husband (chosen because we love it, not as an honor name, but still). But I'm still at the point where when I think: Okay Fiona is IT then I get sad at not using Penelope. But when I think okay then, Penelope it is! I get sad at not using Fiona. haha
