@Radish: Haha that is too funny, the avatar made more sense when my SN was Mrs.Tiger! I should probably change it! Awesome with the rolling, I think its funny when they get so frustrated (but then feel bad and help him out super fast because I also feel bad!)

@Radish: @turquoisemama: I think we're going to have to get a jumparoo, or something similar! A loves to stand (with help) and bounce around. And she's getting too big for her playmat, so we need something new to keep her busy.

    Age: 4 1/2 months
    Weight: 16lbs 2oz, 27 inches
Recent Milestones: She loves to roll from her back to her tummy, but then she gets mad since she can't roll back yet.
Favorite Toy and/or Activity: Rolling around on the floor, looking in the mirror
Personality Traits Emerging: She is a pretty happy baby (unless she's overtired). A little quiet around new people, but she's all smiles once she warms up.

We went out of town this weekend, and A was great. She was so good on the 5.5 hour car ride (each way), managed to nap in the stroller/carseat pretty well, and actually slept ok overnight in the pack n play at the hotel!
Such a relief to know she travels well; we have lots of out of town friends/family we'd like to visit but have been wary since if A doesn't sleep she is a hot mess.

    Still here, still woefully behind...

    Age: 5 months on Friday
Weight: 14lbs14oz and 27.25" tall and skinny
Recent Milestones: pulling to stand and scooting.
Favorite Toy and/or Activity: jumperoo & the Winkle
Personality Traits Emerging: she is insanely happy. She had a rough couple nights that week and was just happy as could be.

  4. Radish

    nectarine / 2079 posts

@charmed: Glad the trip went well! Times like that make you think you can have a life again.

@oliviaoblivia: I can't believe she is already pulling up, but L was also mostly ahead with gross motor, right? I remember all Jan 13 babies doing things at the same time as Dec 12 babies.

Love reading all these updates! Time to post new photos to our fb group? I want to see those babes!

    Age: 4 months and change.
Weight: 15lbs and 25" about 2 weeks ago! Chubby little monkey i am a little nervous about her getting enough milk though. She eats more than her sister did.
Recent milestones: grabbing at toys and bringing them to her mouth. She is almost able to roll from back to belly but cannot figure out belly to back at all. She doesnt even know that direction exists.
Favorite toy/activity: winkle, skip hop activity mat with all her birdie friends, one if those books with the crinkly pages. We are trying out the jolly jumper and she hasn't figured out how to jump yet.
Personality traits: she is a pretty happy and chill baby usually. She gets startled easily and upset when there are too many unfamiliar people around though.

@Radish: yeah, L was fast with stuff, but C is out of control. If I have her in my lap at the table she pulls up and tries to steal food. Or in my lap she grabs my shirt and stands up. I though L was early at six months, this is insane. I do not want an early walker!

    Anyone thinking about solids?
C meets all the signs of readiness but six months. It feels like I'm torturing her when I eat in front of her. Gotta tough it out another month. Too bad your mom is a rule follower kiddo.

@oliviaoblivia: I started pears with H yesterday. He looooooved them and slept super well last night. I didn't give him any today because I'm not being that serious about it, just experimenting so far. But yeah, I live on the wild side and he was ready.

    Age: 4.5 months
Weight: 17 lbs 4 oz and 26 inches. My baby is Hoss Cartwright.
Recent milestones: Rolling both ways now. Survived sleep training. STTN (7 pm-7 am with one dream feed).
Favorite toy/activity: Under the Sea jumperoo - just the past few days, he loves it! He tolerates the Mega Seat (just like big brother, his bum and thighs don't fit in the Bumbo?! OMG...) and is especially excited when we stick the Mega Seat in our little splash pool.
Personality traits: Happy little guy. Not shy. Still easily startled by noises. Generally chill, unless very hungry

@oliviaoblivia: I plan to start solids in about 6 weeks. I started with A on a whim around 5.5 months so I'm just going to shoot for the same thing this time, but won't push it if she isn't interested

  9. charmed

    persimmon / 1177 posts

@Radish: I know, it was great! Next time we need to get a hotel room with a separate bedroom. We put A to bed at 8pm, then had to sit in the dark and whisper to each other until we were ready for bed!

    @oliviaoblivia: pulling up already!
A is so watchful when I eat/drink anything, and wants to touch everything. Our pediatrician said we could start some cereal if we wanted, but I think we'll wait about a month yet.

  10. Happygal

    pomelo / 5000 posts

@oliviaoblivia: we had a 4 month checkup on Friday and our pediatrician said there's new research (within the last year or so) that supports starting earlier than 6 months. So I think we'll give it a go! I'm thinking avocado thinned out with breast milk.

  11. SleepyMonkey

    grapefruit / 4006 posts

We also got the go ahead from our pedi to start solids but i am a little hesitant. She said oatmeal and not rice because rice is constipating. Eh. I kind of want to skip the infant cereals all together and go straight to fruits or veggies.

  12. keepcalmcarrie

    persimmon / 1096 posts

@Happygal: My pedi said the same thing about starting earlier. Between his spit-up (supposedly solids help reduce that) and his size (17 lbs and change) I think he's more than ready.

@SleepyMonkey: We've been thickening bottles with rice cereal for about 6 weeks because of LO2's reflux, and I definitely think it's constipating! He seems to have adjusted, but our first "food" is pears because that helps keep things moving I like going with fruits and veggies first anyway though, as long as baby likes them. Rice and oatmeal cereal both seem so bland, I can't imagine that would be very exiting!

  13. charmed

    persimmon / 1177 posts

@SleepyMonkey: @keepcalmcarrie: I'm hoping to do fruits/veggies first too. Maybe more of a baby led weaning approach with while foods instead of purees and cereal.

What size clothes are your babies wearing? I ust started putting A in 9 month sleepers
Still in 6 month for most everything else, but I have some 6-9 month size from Old Navy that are way too big.

  14. turquoisemama

    persimmon / 1481 posts

@charmed: We are in some 3-6montgs, but mostly 6 months. She can wear 9month but it's a little big. She'll be in it soon though.

  15. Pumuckl

    pomegranate / 3601 posts

@charmed: We're mainly in 6months with an occasional 3m or 9m thrown in for good measure

  16. mfa_lady

Gosh, I'm so late to the party! Things have been crazy, but we're still here!

    Age: 5 months tomorrow!

Weight: According to an informal weight check at my parents', almost 15lbs. Haven't been weighed at the doc since 4 months.

Recent milestones: STTN! I almost hate to say it in case we jinx it, but goodness it's so glorious. Still takes crappy naps for us on the weekends, though! Also, two of the cutest (and sharpest!) little teeth ever, though those have been around for a month already. She's got a ways to go but I'm pretty sure she's working on some more.

Favorite toy/activity: She totally loves this weird crinkly toy that my aunt and uncle gave her! It keeps her busy in the car for ages. Also, she's so smiley when you talk to/make noises at her. Very social little lady!

Personality traits: She's a jolly little thing, but she's also very particular. She's as smiley as can be until something happens that she doesn't like, and then she lets you know until you fix it. In other words--girlfriend knows what she wants.

  17. mfa_lady

    pomegranate / 3921 posts

@charmed: Like @Pumuckl: we are in mostly 6 months with some 3- and 9-monthers thrown in for good measure. She's long but skinny, so sizing for her really depends on the type of clothing.

  18. mfa_lady

    pomegranate / 3921 posts

As for food, I'd really like for her just to have BM until 6 months, but we'll see if we can make it another month. She's starting to get REALLY interested in what we're eating!

  19. SleepyMonkey

    grapefruit / 4006 posts

@charmed: we are in 3-6 month and some 6-9 months in tops. Chubby little girl.

@mfa_lady: yes to the crinkly toy! She loves this "book" that has 3 pages and 2 are crinkly. She could play with it for ages. Awesome about the sttn! I don't think it is ever going to happen here without cio!

  20. namaste

    persimmon / 1313 posts

@mfa_lady: A LOVES her crinkly toys and books. My friend makes them at home with cereal bags and fabric. It's instant magic.

@oliviaoblivia: A is still going strong with purees and some slightly "bigger" pieces. She's so tiny, is sitting up half of the time, and has no problems cuing for food/being done that we got the go ahead from her ped at 4 months. Thus far we've done bananas, avocado, butternut squash, and green peas. She's only eating once a day and she's loved everything.

@charmed: A is in 3-6 months but is getting too tall for her 3-6 sleepers

  21. mfa_lady

    pomegranate / 3921 posts

@namaste: That's so awesome that she's doing so great with food. Is it affecting her BM intake at all?

I always hear that food is just for fun before a year, but my cousin's daughter has been crushing purees since 4.5 months and is now eating 3 meals of table food a day at 8 months! She's only drinking a couple ounces less, too. (Her mama EPs.)

  22. mfa_lady

    pomegranate / 3921 posts

@SleepyMonkey: You know, we KIND OF did CIO, but really we didn't have to do much. Honestly, I think she was kind of ready. For E, it coincided EXACTLY with when she learned to suck on her fingers to self-soothe. I couldn't have done any kind of CIO before that.

The big kicker for us was that last wakeup that was happening between 4 and 6 AM. (Her normal wake time is 7AM.) One morning, I just decided to let her fuss a little/kick her legs all around when she woke up at 4, and she just went back to sleep! That still happens almost every morning, but she doesn't usually cry and is usually still zonked out when I get up around 6 or 6:30.

ALSO, we give her a pumped bottle for her last feed. That way, I KNOW she's getting enough to eat, instead of falling asleep! I was really conflicted about it, because that means on weekdays I only really get 1.5 nursing sessions with her (first thing in the morning and a snack right when we get home), but mama needs her sleep. We plan to keep that up unless my supply starts to drop drastically.

  23. namaste

    persimmon / 1313 posts

@mfa_lady: She's doing great. No decrease thus far at all.

  24. mfa_lady

    pomegranate / 3921 posts

@namaste: Hungry babies, man! Good for A. What a little champ! I was feeling super stressed about starting solids, and now that she's starting to reach for food I'm getting more excited. Except for about the poop....can't she just have breastmilk poop forever?!

  25. namaste

    persimmon / 1313 posts

@mfa_lady: The poops can be pretty gnarly but sizing her up helped so much!

  26. oliviaoblivia

    pineapple / 12793 posts

@namaste: that's awesome she likes solids so much! C is small so I'm delaying despite her being really ready so that she's getting as much BM as possible. Health Canada is still pushing six months so I'm going to try to hold out a few more weeks.

@charmed: C has been in 9 months for a while now.

Finally sorted naps out, but night sleep is all over the place. She can't self soothe at all. Wakeups are five minutes or less if I help, but when I've given her the opportunity to sort it out herself she gets really upset and I can't deal MOTN. I'd like my STTN girl back!

  27. Radish

    nectarine / 2079 posts

@charmed: I love how old navy's sizing is bigger than other places. B's toes are starting to touch her 6 month sleepers so I have the 9 month washed and on standby. Otherwise all 6 month clothes (with a few larger 3 mo and smaller 9 mo items thrown in)

@mfa_lady: For DD1 she was never a big eater - I always offered but she never took a lot and I never stressed about it since she was still getting breast milk. When I say starting solids - I don't even mean I expect her to eat them, its more of just getting used to idea and oral sensations.

  28. Radish

    nectarine / 2079 posts

@oliviaoblivia: So, because I'm up with A randomly throughout the night or I just end up staying up late I actually watch B wake up and put herself back to sleep throughout the night (with no crying). Self-soothing seems to be such a big component - A doesn't do it well and is a terrible sleeper and B does so I get awesome sleep from her.

  29. mfa_lady

    pomegranate / 3921 posts

@namaste: Yeah, we're finally in size 2s! The blowouts were just getting out of control--wasn't worth it just to try to use the last of the old packs.

  30. oliviaoblivia

    pineapple / 12793 posts

@Radish: it's getting so old. L was a major thumbsucker but C is obsessed with her wubbanub. She can sometimes get it back in herself, but if it's out of her sight I have to do it. She's back asleep instantly, but she wakes me.

  31. Pumuckl

    pomegranate / 3601 posts

@oliviaoblivia: YES, I so want my STTN baby back. She's not done it in 2 weeks now and I'm scared she doesn't know how to do it anymore. Recommendations about solids here are phrased differently it's more "anytime the signs are prevalent after 4months".

J is nowhere near ready for solids yet. Her brother only started at nearly 7months and was eating 3-4 meals of solids by 9months. So I am not worried at all.

  32. Happygal

    pomelo / 5000 posts

@mfa_lady: our babies really sound a lot alike! I think our girl is easy going, but she let's you know when she's displeased.

I'm thinking of starting with a little avocado thinned out with BM. I'm seeing it like @Radish: for the taste and fun (I hope!) and whatever health benefit comes from introducing it now.

For the experienced moms--do you have favorite feeding gear? I'd like to find a container I can freeze food in that will fit in our bottle warmer to thaw.

    Here's our update:

Age: 4 months as of May 22

Weight: Almost 15 pounds. 24 1/4 inches height, big 'ole noggin at 44 cm--don't laugh!

Recent milestones: I notice little things every day. I handed her a chew toy and she carefully got it to her mouth. She heard a noise in the hallway and turned in anticipation to see who would walk through the door. I put my hands out to pick her up and she curls up to meet me. So alert!

We have some stranger danger going on. It seems more of an issue when it's abrupt, like when she's in a stroller or car seat, she screams.

Physically--a whole lotta rolling from side to side, but not a complete flop yet. Watching her on the monitor at night is like witnessing a sporting event. Legs up, slam down, roll this way, lurch that way. I'm on teething alert, but it's hard to get a good look.

Favorite toy/activity: If I sing Baby Beluga one more time, I might lose my mind. But it's magical and stops all the crying. She is a talker and experiments with noises she can make. Her activity mat is still a hit--we say, "Want to go see your friends?" and she hangs out for a bit.

    Personality traits: Happy, alert, vocal.

  33. mfa_lady

    pomegranate / 3921 posts

@Happygal: Really, I think our girls are long lost sisters. E is also putting stuff in her mouth like a pro, has a big head, and slams her legs around in her crib like a crazy person. I mean, really--if I could do leg lifts like that I DEFINITELY would be rid of this little belly pooch that keeps hanging around. Stranger danger is real here, too--for sure takes her a while to warm up to people. And she's rolling side to side, too, and her sitter says she rolls from back to belly there all the time, but I've only seen her do it once, almost a month ago. She hates being on her belly (still), so isn't super motivated.

  34. Radish

    nectarine / 2079 posts

@Happygal: haha to baby beluga. B loves skidamarink.

I always froze baby food in ice cube trays (once frozen i would transfer to a freezer bag). I just use a blender or food processor to puree - nothing fancy and really we only pureed for the first few months if that. I found that we didn't use a whole lot of the feeding gear we got, especially the plastic stuff. DD1 always ate better off of our real plates and I was more comfortable using them in the microwave.

  35. Pumuckl

    pomegranate / 3601 posts

@Happygal: I hear you on always having to sing the same song: In this house it's the toddler requesting "wheels on the bus" though.
RE Feeding: We have some take and toss spoons that we love because I find them to have just the right size. We have a summer infant tiny dinner place mat that my older one used when he started feeding himself as we opted out of a highchair with tray. Other than that we didn't have anything fancy for feeding at all.

Crazy what a difference a week makes! L is now rolling like a crazy person both ways, once he figured it out he just won't stop. He's so much happier now that he can get himself in the position he wants.

We just weighed him today to see if the new formula is making a difference and he has gained 1.8lbs in 3 weeks! That is so amazing for him and he jumped from 4th% to 19th % in just 3 weeks, so the new formula is definitely working for him. Now we are just waiting to see if insurance will help cover it.

  37. keepcalmcarrie

    persimmon / 1096 posts

@HappyBaker: Awesome! So exciting when they master a skill and can enjoy it instead of getting frustrated.

I didn't see - which formula did you end up using? Alimentum has been an (expensive) lifesaver for both my boys. I hope yours gets covered by insurance.

  38. HappyBaker

    nectarine / 2242 posts

@keepcalmcarrie: We ended up on Nutramigen, and I actually just got off the phone that it will be covered by our insurance. I think in MA it's mandated? They are covering 90 units from now until Aug and then we need to get re-approval. I just need to call the pharmacy to see what is considered a "unit".

  39. Radish

    nectarine / 2079 posts

@HappyBaker: Yay, that is awesome progress! Glad insurance will cover it!

  40. charmed

    persimmon / 1177 posts

@HappyBaker: glad the formula is making a difference - that is so great!!

@Happygal: @mfa_lady: A is starting to get a bit of stranger danger too and it's not just total strangers, it can be someone she knows but hasn't seen in a couple days (she took a while to warm up to my mom on Friday; she hadn't seen her since Monday. She also cried every time my 12 yo nephew talked to her, when just a week ago she loved playing with him)

And we're going through a major sleep regression now. So much for sleeping through the night; I'm lucky if she sleeps till midnight. Plus she will not go back to sleep if she wakes up after 4am. Sometimes she's happy to lay in her crib and make noises, but lately she's been crying and wants to be held. I had to bust out the swing again, was really hoping we were past that
Praying this doesn't last too long!
