Nov '12 Babies: Feeding

@twoofeverything: Some people only do finger foods (baby led weaning). You don't really have to do purees and according to the BLW book the purée thing started because people were often encouraged to give solids at 3-4 months. At this time many babies are developmentally unable to self feed and may not be ready for food. We've done very little purees and are happy with our choice. My LO doesn't really like thin purees and prefers for even his oatmeal to be thick.

@twoofeverything: I'm too scared to do that. She still gags a fair amount.

We tried our first solid (besides rice cereal) and did peas this weekend. And now she has a rash on her face. I wonder if she is allergic?

@highwire: A got a rash when we gave him a raw apple slice for teething... went away fairly quickly... i'm not sure how it all works with food allergy symptoms... bleeehhh

@SLR: my LO isn't too into solids yet either, the only things she actually likes are oatmeal and pureed carrots. everything else is kinda "meh" to her. she is way more interested in chewing on the spoon and her fingers than actually eating lol

@NovBaby1112: mine too. Loves waving the spoon around, won't actually open her mouth to eat.

AF has returned! I think it might be hurting my supply, but I'm glad to know things are back to status quo down there.

We are down to nursing only once a day right now, even on weekends. First thing in the morning is the only time she will agree to nurse at all. I'm working on pumping as many times as possible the rest of the day (usually 4-5x) and giving her what I pump when she eats the next time. Trying to keep giving her breastmilk in some way or another! It is always something LOL

As for solids, we are still just doing only cereal at breakfast. We tried peas last weekend but she got sick afterwards and it was either an allergic reaction to something or something she caught at daycare. But I haven't wanted to risk another reaction right after she got better. Ready to get some more variety in her diet! But I don't want to introduce anything new during the week where I can't keep an eye on her, so we are limited to weekends only for new things.

How's feeding going for you ladies?

Also, anyone have any nursing position ideas now that our babies are older and more wiggly?

She is just absolutely not interested in nursing in the cross cradle or cradle positions. I tried sitting her up on my leg with her legs straddling me and offering the breast that way, but she was not having it that way either. She turns her head, pushes away with her hand, etc. I've tried different times of day, when she's in different moods, different locations, she's not having it.

@highwire: LO is still a happy nurser but I definitely can tell a difference when I'm using the boppy pillow vs. not. It seems to kind of corral him a little so he doesn't get as distracted. Not sure if that is helpful!

@highwire: we nurse laying down in our bed now. If we're not in thw bedroom, she will still tolerate cradle as long as no one else is around but if we're out and about I feed her upright in the Ergo and try put a cover over her head.

I've tried to make our purees a bit thicker lately and add less breastmilk because I felt like she only liked the foods that had lots of milk and it was setting us back a little bit. We also had a break from solids while we went to England, and then for a few days after because she had a cold and was off colour. So we've had sweet potato, carrot, peas, banana, pear, avocado, apple and today we tried turkey. I had no idea how the meat was going to go down but mixed it with water and some fat and juices from the roasting tray. Surprisingly she quite liked it... She played about with it, smeared it all over her face, dropped it all over her bib etc,but that's half the fun, right? I'm going to offer a fruit every morning this week (introducing melon on Wednesday too) and then turkey or a veg at dinner time.

How's BLW going for those of you trying that? I do wish I was brave enough to do it, it makes perfect sense to me as a method, I feel with purees that every time you offer it thicker, or with more chunks, it's like starting again. I much prefer the a banana is a banana approach.

    hey mamas!

we are also in the distracted daytime nursing camp, but we still nurse 5x a day. in the am, 3x during day, then before bed. the AM session is side lying in my bed, PM session is with boppy in glider in nursery. the other three are usually just on the couch, sometimes sidelying in bed. he pops on/off a lot, but still "eats" though not as much as before. i can feel my supply/boobs changing with his decrease in milk intake.

A is an eating machine!! LOL he nurses with me in the AM (Both sides unless i need to pump one on my work days), eats a whole banana for breakfast. nurses/btl 3x a day, 1-2 oz veggie puree, mummums during the day, dinner he eats 3-4 oz veggie puree, and then nurses before bed.

We haven't tried any meats yet!

    GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts

@travelgirl1: we've only done "blw" with avocado slices. we're also taking it slow... he'll do mum mums and our homemade purees are chunkier and he's into "chewing" now but I still can't do 100% blw, for both cleanup/choking/etc. fears.

  13. immabeetoo

    honeydew / 7687 posts

@mrsjyw: wow! LO eats maybe one slice of a banana at a time I can't imagine him eating a whole one!

@travelgirl1: we're sort of doing a mix. i make homemade chunky purees and also give him "real" food like half a banana, avocado slices, sweet potato fries, watermelon slices. He has never gagged or choked; he gnaws pieces off and they usually just fall out of his mouth or he swallows them.

    grapefruit / 4066 posts

M is a nursing machine still, sometimes 8-10x a day lol....but she has zero interest in food!! she likes carrot puree and oatmeal but that's all still! she is way more interested in holding the spoon and nomming on that...she doesn't like me feeding her either, she wants to be the one to put the spoon in her mouth. i am wasting so much baby food getting her to try new stuff and she just doesn't even want it

@NovBaby1112: I've found that if my LO is resistant to a new food if I try mixing something she already likes into it I have much better success. So I would suggest trying to mix carrots with something new to get her to try more things!

@MamaMoose: oooh that's a good idea!! I will have to try that! thanks for the tip

@NovBaby1112: Yes - LO didn't like bananas by themselves at all but when we mixed some with carrot she was way into it. Then we mixed banana with apple and oatmeal and it is hew new favorite food!

@mrsjyw: just curious, when did you start introducing mummum's? one of my worst fears in life is choking!! haha so i'm kind of scared to try but i know i have to eventually. but thats awesome that he likes solids so much! my LO is just starting to get into it now so i think she's eating about 2-3 oz (up from a couple spoonfuls a week or so ago)

  19. mrsjyw

    GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts

@kodybear: he loves them and we started it a few weeks' ago? they're so light and crispy that they melt in their mouths for the most part! plus A has teeth, so he crunches through them on the bottom

  20. ChelseaRose

    persimmon / 1161 posts

@kodybear: My LO loves mum mums too! They dissolve fast so I don't think choking is much of an issue. They are great for times when I'm eating and need to keep him occupied, like at a restaurant.

Wow guys, things have been so hectic lately I'm just now getting a chance to chime in to the updates! I try to keep up with everyone during my pumping breaks at work, but don't get much opportunity to post any more.

@highwire: I was also going to ask about nursing positions. It's been tough lately finding something that works. Em is getting so long that it's difficult to nurse in the glider in the nursery. She keep banging her feet against the armrests and I'm afraid I'm going to get her leg twisted in there! When we're on the couch, I tend to sit indian style and she kind of sits/lays in the well where my ankles cross with her head cradled in my arm. (I guess that's the best way to describe it?)

She has been super spitty again the past several days and doesn't seem to have as much of an appetite. Not sure if she's just getting accustomed to her new bottom teeth or if she has more on the way.

Solids still are going pretty slow with us. She's still not all that into it. She'll open up for the first 5-6 bites and then she could care less. We've tried rice cereal, oatmeal, sweet potatoes, peas, green beans w/ rice, banana, pear, apple, avocado, squash, and carrots. Sweet potatoes and squash were the favorites so far.

She's got the concept of the sippy cup down fairly well, I think. She does a good job bringing it to her mouth, but I think she chews on the spout more than sucks/pours it in her mouth. I'm not a fan of the cups we have though; I think we need to find something better.

We haven't done the mum mums yet, mainly because I keep forgetting to pick them up at the store. A bunch of my friends in our moms group love them though. We do give her puffs to play with while we eat dinner. I don't think a single one has made it into her mouth, but that's okay....it keeps her occupied and is good practice at the pincer grasp.

@SLR: Oh yeah indian style on the floor had been working nicely for us in the last few weeks.

She had a decent nursing session this morning! Yay.

hey mamas, how much milk is your LO taking in nowadays?

A will be 7 months on Friday. And I want to make sure that it's not a supply dwindling issue, but a supply adjustment to his less intake of milk.

We nurse 5x a day on days I'm home, around 10-15 min.
We nurse 2x a day and gets a bottle 3x on my office days.

He eats a banana for breakfast, has a mum mum/sometimes 2 oz of puree for lunch, and 4 oz for dinner.

I think he's taking in/I'm making 5 oz less than before solids... in a day. around 25 oz instead of 30 oz. Should I be concerned about supply issues or is this just him taking in less as we up his solids?

    He does not feed overnight.

  27. DillonLion

    GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts

@mrsjyw: C is usually doing 6 oz at every feeding (3 oz BM, 3 oz formula, still)

We are really slow moving on the solids. She just does cereal once a day in the mornings. This week we are adding a green veggie to her cereal and seeing how she does.

ETA: And she's a big lady! 19 ish lbs now.

  28. MamaMoose

    GOLD / squash / 13464 posts

@mrsjyw: M is still taking her usual 25-30 ounces per day. But she is only eating solids once a day at this point. Soon we are going to start going to twice a day so I would expect she may drop a feeding at that point.

  29. kodybear

    pear / 1616 posts

@mrsjyw: my LO is drinking less milk now. before solids she'd drink about 4- 7.5oz bottles so 30 oz total. now we do solids 3 times a day, about 1.5oz each time. and shes been drinking about 25oz of milk. so it sounds right that your LO might be drinking less milk now.

ETA it sucks when she doesn't drink a full bottle of BM at daycare, they just dump that stuff down the drain! once it was 2 oz!! man if it was at home i would've saved it even tho i know some ppl say you shouldn't. bleh

  30. DillonLion

    GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts

@kodybear: That's why I still make them do two different bottles at daycare for every single feeding (breastmilk and formula). I'd much rather her not finish some of the formula rather than potentially pouring some of that liquid gold down the drain! Ack.

Are you guys doing three meals a day with your little ones? My doctor said that we should work up to three, so I have been trying to do that. But I've also read some things that that's really overkill on a breast-fed baby and that we need to get 3 meals a day by nine months. What do you guys do?

  32. lindseykaye

    pear / 1992 posts

@kml636: We just started doing a meal at daycare (so two a day) last week at 7 months. She started solids at about 5.5 months so I will most likely wait until closer to 8.5 or 9 months for three proper meals. She will have some puffs or yogurt melts in addition to the current two meals now though but those are so small they don't even feel like they count.

  33. SLR

    clementine / 824 posts

@kml636: We are doing one meal in the am at daycare and one in the evening. We've missed the evening meal on occasion, but I don't really stress about it. In the next few weeks I may have daycare start doing one in the afternoon too because the nights are just so busy. That way, I'll be assured she is getting solids 2x a day at that point.

Also, I don't know if what she has been eating so far even constitutes as a full 'meal'? It's usually only a little over an ounce each time.

  34. immabeetoo

    honeydew / 7687 posts

@kml636: there are days where we skip solids all together! Today was the very first day (1 week from 7 months) that he actually seemed to be intentionally eating anything. We've been doing a combo of BLW & homemade mushes that he controls the spoon for. So, once it seems like he is actually eating stuff I'll probably add on a second. But no, definitely not 3 meals a day here!

  35. DillonLion

    GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts

We are only doing one meal at day (breakfast) and it is still just cereal mostly. We just started adding a little bit of green purree to it this week (well, we asked the daycare to).

Okay, this is making me feel better. In my neighborhood there are some moms that have been giving their LOs three meals since 5ish months!

  37. ChelseaRose

We do solids 2-3 times per day, but my LO is closer to 8 months than he is to 7. He really enjoys food and we usually give him two different things to each "meal" and have recently started dairy/protein. He has some cheese or yogurt everyday.

  38. kml636

    pomegranate / 3225 posts

@ChelseaRose: How is he doing with the yogurt/cheese?

  39. ChelseaRose

    persimmon / 1161 posts

@kml636: He loves them and it hasn't caused him any tummy troubles. He also still drinks just as much breast milk as he always has! For cheese we gave him half of a jack cheese stick from Trader Joe's. It is softer than string cheese and has less sodium. We are able to cut it in pretty small pieces because he's just about at a pincer grasp (thanks to mostly BLW). For yogurt I got him plain Yobaby brand because it is full fat and doesn't have added sugar like the flavored yogurts.

  40. lindseykaye

    pear / 1992 posts

@ChelseaRose: Thanks for posting about your dairy choices! Veggies, fruit and grains are easy to figure out but I can't make my own cheese and yogurt (or I could but I wont! Haha). We have a TJ's here so I will likely pick up those cheese sticks when we decide to start dairy.
