Hello ladies! Had my first OB appt today, and we saw the fetus and the little heartbeat So exciting!

My appointment today was pretty underwhelming -- weight/height, urine sample, family history, a bit of a check-up for me and the Doppler, and that was that. My doctor is supposed to do some research into our genetic issue and call me in a few weeks, plus he mentioned that our ultrasound (not sure which one, or if it was both) showed a bleed, so I will probably get a follow up scan. I'm kinda bummed out that it was so basic but I guess there isn't much to talk about during the first appointment? They're sticking with the due date from my LMP, too, even though both of my ultrasounds measured a bit further along.
I wasn't booked in for a follow-up so I'm hoping he'll do that when he calls?

Had our ultrasound today! Baby M looks good and is now due on 11/25, which is my father's birthday (he passed away shortly after we got married). Heartbeat is 153 Bpm. We will learn more at our appointment next week, but all looks good!

@MrsDragon: Sorry to hear your first appointment was disappointing. Mine wasn't much either and I was sent to the hospital for our ultrasound. That was the most exciting part! I hope you get some reassuring answers soon.

@Cara M. 17: Now that I've had some time to think about it I'm feeling better. I'm a bit unsure about the follow-up situation but I know he has research to do and the bloodwork needs to come in first, so I'm just hoping the bleed turns out to be nothing, and that I get my followup in a month or so!

@MrsDragon: Prayers for the bleed. I hope everything turns out okay at your next appoinment!

@Running Elley: a HUGE congratulations to you on #2! So happy to see you here on the November boards! I have a friend who had her first two kids close in age and they are such great playmates.

@sweetooth: Thanks :). Everyone I know is fine. My MIL had a scare yesterday thinking she wouldn't be able to get out of the city because there were rumors the trains were shutting down. But she got home safe.
It's pretty scary, I used to live a couple miles from there, right on the marathon route.

@MrsTiz: Glad to hear your appointment last week went well! I bet it was so cool to see all of the movement! Be sure to bring your husband next time you have an ultrasound - it's pretty fun to share those moments with him

@MrsCB: I'm glad to hear that your MIL is safe and everyone you know is too. It's so terrifying to watch the footage and think about that moment for everyone there. I really do hope they find out who did this soon.

@sweetooth: I didn't know we were having one!
I have another appointment scheduled on the 24th for another U/S so DH can come to that one!

@shellio: yay for a little heartbeat!!!
@MrsDragon: it seems like if you are curious about a follow-up that you should go ahead and call the office.
@Cara M. 17: hello to little baby M!
@Ash: I'm ready for Friday too!!! I want to see this little blueberry in my belly

@MrsCB: Happy everyone is safe!
@Ash: Ooooh, ultrasounds for the win! Hurry up, Friday!
I have my appointment at 11:00 today, I'm kiiiiinda freaking out. I'm 10 weeks, 4 days and we're supposedly going to try to hear the heartbeat with the doppler. Like I said, freaking. out. DH is out of town today so I'm making momma go with me (which she's more than happy to do!)... Eek!

@sweetooth: I'm going to give them to the end of next week, I think -- the doctor said if he was going to call me in for another U/S it'd be around that time frame!
@ms.janedoe: Good luck!

Heartbeat!!! Whew! It seemed fast (but what do I know)--172 beats per minute, but she found it right away!!! So crazy!
I DID end up setting up the first trimester screening (appointment next Friday), not so much because we're "worried" or anything about any potential risks, but because I want another ultrasound!

@ms.janedoe: Yay, that's awesome!!!
My appointment is supposed to be next Thursday. I'm 9w 2d today and my last baby's heart stopped around 8w 6d, so I'm terrified even though we've had 2 good ultrasounds already. I'm trying so, so hard to have faith...but I'm scared because I don't want to go through that heartbreak again.
With all that said, I changed my appointment from the 25th to tomorrow at 2:15. I feel kinda crazy, but I've decided that I need to do whatever it takes to ease my mind during this pregnancy.

@lilteacherbee: Don't feel crazy at all! You do what you need to in order to feel good about this pregnancy. I hope everything goes well today

So... I'm a bit annoyed and irritated now. Turns out, they had my appointment all messed up and they wanted me to come back tomorrow. Apparently, the appointment was just to talk about family history with a nurse and only after that could I see a doctor. Well, I asked if I could see the doctor anyway today because I was really nervous. I also asked about an ultrasound and the lady said "your next one won't be until 18-20 weeks." What?! They don't do NT scans.
Finally, they got that all straightened out and I was able to see the doctor. She confirmed no ultrasounds for 2 months (visit at 13 weeks to hear heartbeat). I practically was in tears and explained my situation- that I'm basically at the same point now that I was in my last pregnancy when the heart stopped. She wheeled in the tiny ultrasound machine and we saw baby's heart beating and even saw he/she moving. No pictures though and she couldn't measure the baby or its heartbeat
Basically, they said I get an ultrasound at 8 weeks (I was 6.5. Tried to explain that I have long cycles but they wouldn't listen) and the anatomy scan. If I didn't already have the ultrasound at the ER 2 weeks ago, that would have made one ultrasound at 6.5 weeks and not another until 3 months later. For someone who is terrified of another missed m/c, it seems nuts.
I'm happy I got to see the baby, if only for a minute, and that he/she seems to be doing well. I'm considering switching OB offices to the one I used to see. I switched last summer only because of issues with previous insurance. I really loved my old OB. I know that office does the NT scan because I have several friends who go there. I know it's common to only have a couple ultrasounds in a pregnancy, but having had a m/c with absolutely no signs...it's just scary. I need these ultrasounds to stay sane.

@lilteacherbee: hugs! That does sound irritating and annoying! I don't have much experience with an OB during pregnancy yet. Do you think that if you bought one of those little doppler things that @MrsCB has, it would help your nerves?

@lilteacherbee: glad you got to see the little heartbeat.
I would seriously consider switching doctors, if you aren't comfortable now....it could be worse during labor. You really need a doctor you can click with.
If you want an NT scan, I would push for it, whether you switch doctors or not.

@sweetooth: I have one I heard a heartbeat (I think) on Sunday, but couldn't hear it on Monday or Tuesday. That's kinda why I've been anxious for this appointment. I'm sure it will help me more once I get a little farther along.
@wheres_c: Yeah it definitely rubs me the wrong way. I feel like I should be able to be reassured.

@lilteacherbee: my midwife's way of reassuring me was an early u/s at 8 weeks instead of 12. I couldn't get anything else by begging but this Friday is my appointment! I understand the fear - I have it every day but every day has gotten easier and that's without seeing the baby yet. God is definitely watching over you and baby. have faith in Him.
honeydew / 7909 posts
@lilteacherbee: I've also noticed most practices don't care. Mrstiz goes to a great practice - always getting reassurance but we're not so lucky. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
cantaloupe / 6791 posts
@Ash: Yes, it's very frustrating! Mrstiz actually only lives 2 hours away so its tempting to drive to see someone who actually cares haha! I think I will switch because I loved my previous doctor and I've heard really good things about the practice during pregnancy. I'm so happy that you finally have your ultrasound!!! Can't wait to hear how it goes!

We had our appointment this afternoon, and we met a different midwife at the practice. We really liked her. No ultrasound yet but we got to hear the baby! He/she was really cooperative and we got to listen for awhile. Dh recorded it on his phone. 168 beasts per minute, which the midwife said was perfect! We go back in 4 Weeks, so I hope we get to see the baby!
@lilteacherbee: I would totally switch if you don't feel comfortable/if you aren't clicking. How it works out soon!

My goodness, I am behind on posts!
@sweetooth: Welcome back! I hope you had a wonderful vacation!
@ms.janedoe: YAY for hearing the heartbeat. Isn't it the most amazong moment of your life?
@lilteacherbee: Glad you got to see the heartbeat. I agree with what others have said, it sounds like maybe you should consider switching doctors to someone who will be more supportive of your valid concerns.
@mrs. j: Sounds like a great appointment! I am so jealous you got to record the heartbeat!
My midwife appointment yesterday was pretty uneventful. We went over my bloodwork & urine results (all fine), talked about a few questions I had, and scheduled my 12 week ultrasound and appointment. Next u/s is May 16th!
