@Tidybee: hmm are you sure there's no gelatinous mass in there? Kind of like a big booger? (sorry gross I know!) If not, then it sounds like bloody show! Although if you had a dr's appt today, it might be spotting/bleeding from that? I know I lost my mucous plug the day after my dr swept my membranes, and went into labor the next day. FIngers crossed it means something is happening!

@Tidybee: hey! i SO know how you feel right now, and I did cry after my appointment! great that your DH is being so supportive, that's awesome... it's hard knowing the dilation/effacement - but you have to remember that could change in a matter of hours, I keep trying to remember that myself.

i have been having a lot of brownish gross discharge -- did you have your membranes swept? I think that might be what caused it to come out for me. I'm sure its all from the internal exam, after each one I've had that... OR it could be the start of something! hang in there! hopefully our babes will come soon!

@Hilsy85 - I felt the EXACT same way about BF. It was so painful days 3-8 or 9. It hurt so so so much that I was in tears every time - bruised and bleeding nipples are no fun and you get no break when you're feeding every 2-3 hours. Around day 9 or 10 it got better and now it's so much better. There's a little bit of discomfort at first, but it's nothing compared to what it was.
When I saw the lactation consultant, she said if it got to be too bad, that I should start pumping for a few days to give my nipples a rest. I pushed through it, but was so close to doing it.

The first 2 weeks was so hard, but it's gotten much better this week! We went for our 2 week check up and Delaney is over her birth weight now - born at 9.3, and was 9.6 today!

@CarrieLouWho: Thank you so much for this!! Did you just keep feeding when you were bleeding, or did you give that side a break for a few feedings?

We had someone from LLL come to the house today, and she gave me some helpful info about how to position L. The thing is, my nips are so damaged that even a good latch hurts. But I am so happy to hear that things might get better for us in the next few days! My left nip is already showing improvement, but my right one is still pretty bad (big scab, very sore--sorry if TMI!). We actually went out and rented a pump today in the hopes of giving my boobs a break, and we tried to feed L with an eyedropper. He had none of it and was screaming his head off So I just put him back on the boob. I'm nervous that using a bottle with pumped milk will cause confusion... The pedi, the hospital, and the LLL woman all said do NOT use a bottle at this point, we need to wait until 3-4 weeks. I'm going to try a nipple shield for the next feeding and see if that helps. Glad she's up past her birth weight! We were at the pedi today for diaper rash (probably because he poops 20 times a day!) and L is back to his birth weight today!

@Hilsy85 - I kept feeding, but tried to give the side that hurt more a break. I also only fed on one side per feed for a few days and that helped.
It's funny that everyone has told you to avoid the bottle bc of nipple confusion. My LC says nipple confusion is not something to worry about. Basically as long as you're still feeding some from the breast, the baby won't be confused. If you start doing every feed with a bottle then it can cause a problem. I love my LC bc she's realistic and gave options. Instead of pushing me to keep bfing, she said pumping would give my nipples a break, keep my milk supply up, and would allow me to keep breastfeeding.

We are going to pump tomorrow for the first time bc I'm going to a baby shower for a friend an I'm leaving LO for the first time with hubby. Yikes!

@hilsy85: I started Alia on a bottle of pumped milk 2 days ago. She has only had 3 bottles and is still BFing like a champ. We intoduced a pacifier yesterday and she slept for the first time last night All previous nights she wanted to be at my breast all night. She would stay on for 3 hours! So far the pacifier has caused no issues either.

@hilsy85: I looked long and hard (gross!) but didn't see anything like a glob in there. The discharge was thick and mucousy, kinda like the first day of your period. I'm definitely a lot more crampy today but i'm trying not to read too much into it. @hellobeeboston: She didn't sweep my membranes. I was going to ask but I got the impression I just didn't make enough progress to even do it. She just did a cervical check like every other week.
We'll hang in there and our babies will come when it's time. Though I'm a little nervous about it coming in the middle of this Frankenstorm!!!

@hilsy85: Just lurking here but wanted to jump in. If you have a really bad scab the best thing to do is try to pump that side and feed off the other side for a while.

We introduced a bottle really early for this same reason. I would feed on the left, pump the right during the day, and then for one feeding at night starting at like 12 days old or so, dad would give a bottle and I would pump both sides.

@hellobeeboston: ahh so exciting!!! Come on baby hellobeeboston!!

@Thehistoryofus: Thank you!! Did you bottle feed the pumped milk from your right side? Or did you just only feed him from the left side? I usually only feed from one side per feeding, so I have been pumping my right side (my really hurt side) and trying to feed from my left side. How long did it take your scab to go away?

I had to give LO a bottle of pumped milk this morning at like 3am He was so hungry and i was trying to use a nipple shield but it kept coming off, so finally I said eff it and pumped like 2oz from my injured nip. He took the bottle easily, and I had to give him another one this morning after unsuccessfully attempting to latch him correctly. I feel like an enormous failure and am really having a hard time with it. It's like a huge thundercloud over this otherwise amazing experience. I definitely did not foresee breastfeeding being this difficult/painful.

    nectarine / 2834 posts

@hilsy85: It'll be okay!! You are NOT a failure!!!!! You have to just do what you can to keep your baby healthy, and if that means mixing in a bottle, then so be it. please don't feel badly!

@hellobeeboston: yay! So excited for you!

@hilsy85: do NOT feel bad about having to give him a bottle of pumped milk. You are doing your best. I hope your nips heal quickly. I don't know if I could've kept up BFing if I was in that much pain. You're doing a great job.

Things are going good with me and the babe. I've had some crying fits over the last few days but I'm feeling better. I was also running a slight fever yesterday so I slept as much as I could and I'm feeling much better today.

My lady bits are pretty sore. I can't walk and do too much because it makes it even more sore. I'm hoping it starts letting up soon. I'm having to take ibuprofen every 6 hours. DH goes back to work next week. I'm nervous about having to take care of the baby all by myself. I've been so spoiled having him home with me for 2 weeks.

@Tidybee: @mrskc: Thanks ladies. I am feeling better about it today; I was able to nurse from my left side and I"m hopeful that once my right side heals, I'll be able to nurse from that side too. I really appreciate the kind words though! Mommy guilt is a real thing, I guess
@mrskc: Sorry to hear you're still so sore! Mine has gotten better the last day or two, but I am so sick of wearing pads/pp bleeding. I feel like it's never going to stop--it's not heavy, just ongoing. Boo. My DH goes back to work next week as well and I am definitely nervous too! But we will figure it out

@hellobeeboston: woot! woot! Let's go baby boston!

@hilsy: I feel bad about giving LO a bottle too....even though its pumped milk but still. I have to at night because we still latch on painfully so I have to rest my nipples between 12 midnight and 7am.....At 7am after his last feed from the bottle...i'll pump (i get an insane amount from being engorged all night which I love because I can freeze some).
When he wakes up at 10am...my milk is back and I feed from breast until midnight again. Hopefully we will get good enough at BFing that I can BF at night as well....but right now I can only do it if I'm in a rocking chair...with a Boppy & a pillow...and a burp rag...and if I strip him naked...It's all such a big deal for us right now still. And the sore nipples have got to go....

I met with a LC this last Wednesday but my nips were so sore she just taught me how to latch on a doll:) I go back Tuesday to actually practice with my baby. I learned a lot and we've been doing *better* but I am glad to go back for session #2. I need all the help I can get!

@Mrs.B: How is Alia doing with the jaundice? Did you have to start an elimination diet?

@Running Elley: Pic from photoshoot is too cute, I have now emailed a few photog's.....I want to get them done!!

@hellobeeboston: Hope you're doing ok, and your LO will be here so soon!!!

@Tidybee: Understandable about your feelings on progress, hoping it will all happen soon for you!!!

Soon all of our October Mama's will have their babes.....you ladies still waiting, might get November babies, but the wait is worth it, and so, so exciting!!

@CarrieLouWho: How did pumping go? We don't have a pump, but it seems semi-tempting to do it, but I know I need to let my milk chill out, holy moly fullness? Ugh, it hurts!!

@hellobeeboston: Going through responses in order!! Well that's progress! Ha.....SO exciting, hope everything goes amazingly!!!

@hilsy85: Ugh. Sorry to hear you're hurting, hang in there, you're doing the best you can!

James Archer was born today at 3:23pm, weighing 8.3lbs, and 19.5 inches long! He is so adorable and we are loving every second with him.

My labor was nuts--- as i mentioned above, I labored at home - got to the hospital at 4cm, got my epidural, progressed pretty quickly then I pushed for FIVE hours and our boy finally arrived just with the pushing, no other interventions needed. Yikes. I am totally exhausted and sweating non stop. And wow - the blood and whole lower situation is crazy! I had a 2nd degree perineal tear so I have stiches, and my lady part is SO swollen from all of the pushing.

    All worth it though!

    We're doing ok over here.

DH went back to work today, I totally cried.

Chels had her first doctor appt yesterday, she is back at her birthweight and everything looked great. Of course all the comments from the nurses and receptionists at the office "look at all that hair", lol.

We have had four great nights, but last night was hell. I spoke with public health nurse yesterday for 35 mins on phone (they call just to check in I guess?) and she said to try to work up to 20 mins on the first breast when feeding to get into the "better" milk (we do 10 each side, and sometimes struggle to get that much -hard to keep her awake) but last night feeding she went for 20 mins and I let her. Oh.....my.......god..... what an awful mistake. It was way too much and she had awful bellyache until about noon today. We were up from 2:30 to 6:30am, and she was so unsettled. We slept skin/skin until about 8 -nursed her a wee bit then, MIL got up and took her for me until 11, I slept, and it still took a few hours to get her "ok".

It was awful, makes you forget all the good progress, but we learned, I cried, and hopefully we will be ok moving forward, but know the bad nights/times will come.....it's hard!

Went for walk with DH and dog last night, and then took dog on my own mid-day today, I just feel like I need to get OUT!

Weather supposed to be awful this weekend, hope none of you ladies are near the storm.

My BOB comes this week, SO excited!! I'm trying to be tolerant with FIL and MIL here, tough at times, I really like my alone/down time and it's hard to get despite them here to help.

Three showers now planned, Nov 11, 18, and 25th. I need to find a polite way to say no clothes or nothing under 1 year -we already have too much, she is a spoiled little girl!

Looking into a newborn photog.....thinking the hair and her chub would make good pics!!

DH skin/skin with her right now, nice to get on here and a chance to type, I just ordered some reusable bra pads, and caught up on email and messages. We got a new car this week too, and half a cow of meat for our freezer put in, should be set for winter for beef!

Do hope everyone is doing well..... I think DH and I heading for a nighttime dog walk here shortly and then get the bed routine going....!! Well....we'll try!

@hellobeeboston: YAY!! Congrats, so awesome to hear!!!!!!

My swelling and soreness and bleeding (6 days pp) has really tapered off, so it does get better, even though right after I never did think it would. Wow about pushing, good for you, all worth it, you are right

@Beebug:Alia's Bilirubin levels are at an OK level right now. Her eyes are still yellow but she is finally off the phototherepy.

I am on an elimination diet. It looks like dairy was the problem. Just eliminating dairy has fixed her tummy, eye, and skin issues (it's clearing up).

  24. hilsy85

@TurtleDoves: I actually wish I had started doing that sooner! Instead I kept breastfeeding with a bad latch, and destroyed my nips, which now means that I have to wait for them to heal..so frustrating. So do you not pump all night?? If I go more than like 4 or 5 hours without pumping or feeding, the pain wakes me up! I also have a painful letdown--it feels like a burning, tingling. Anyone else?

@hellobeeboston: yay!!! LOVE his name, esp the middle name--is it a family name? Good job pushing him out mama! Hope you get some rest in the next day or two, and enjoy your sweet baby!

@Beebug: definitely do newborn pics--they are SO worth it! And I can't imagine having my in laws staying with us--you're a saint in my book to have any people staying with you at this point, even though I'm sure they're helpful as much as they can be.

Also, I don't know if she checks this thread anymore, but @thefixits had her baby boy! If you see this, hope you're doing well, mama!

@hellobeeboston: congrats mama! Love his name. Enjoy your sweet baby boy and take care of yourself.

@Mrs.B: I'm glad your baby girl is doing better.

@hilsy85: I can't even feel my letdown. Is that abnormal? But my boobs definitely start to hurt if it starts to get around 3 hours between a feeding. I really hope your nips heal quickly. Have you tried soothies? I heard those help with the pain.

Do any of you notice a difference in each of your boobs? He always eats faster on the left and the milk seems to come out faster compared to my right boob. I think my supply is finally settling in too. The engorgement hasn't been as bad the last couple of days. I would really like to get him weighed to make sure he's eating enough.

@hilsy85: I should have clarified: I pump at night as well. When I get up to thaw his milk and warm it, I have my hands free pump going as well. It's only like 5-8mins but its enough to bring me relief. At 7am is when I do my 20min pump which yields a lot of milk. The short sessions Barry get much and I add that fresh milk to the bottle I'm making for him because its not enough to freeze in its own baggie. Tingling and throbbing, man! That hurts. I start looking like a porn star when I'm engorged

@hellobeeboston: congratulations on a healthy baby!!! Can't wait to read the full birth story:)

@Mrs.B: I haven't! I did put one on today just for fun, she soaked it pretty dang well! I'm hesitant to start yet, everything seems too big, even though I have XS and S prefolds and AIO's, and "a big baby" it still just doesn't seem like it'll work. Not putting any pressure on myself, but eager to get going with it eventually!

@hilsy85: I definitely have tingling boobs, they just hurt pretty much constantly, and leakage is hilariously annoying, like can't even get from shower into a bra fast enough.

Has anyone shaved their legs pp yet? How AMAZING is it to bend over comfortably?! Just shaved/showered, love it! I am going to weigh myself tomorrow for first time pp, so excited!

Time for bed....whatever that means now

@Beebug: yeah I'm not weighing myself for another 3 weeks. Last I checked I had 15 of my 30lbs left to go. I am ok with how I look actually and my ppreg cloths fit...just way more snug than they used to....so as soon as these stitches heal up: to the gym!

@Beebug: YES my first shower back at home was aaahhh-mazing. I love being able to put my shoes on easily now!

I also managed to put on my pre preg jeans (they won't close so I"m using a belly panel thing for now--but they went up!) AND my pre preg shoes!!! Woo hoo! Next step is to get my rings back on

@mrskc: I don't think everyone feels letdown, so definitely not abnormal. I wish I didn't feel it! I also think my right boob produces more milk--it always feels fuller/looks bigger. Too bad that's the injured one! I tried gel hydropads, which I think are the same. They were okay; might give them another go later.

I think I still need to get a pump, hurting big time, even just a little bit a day for some relief and to build a little stash maybe?! Maybe?

She has slept all am! So nice for DH and I, and parents in law are out running errands so we're lazing on couch, much needed DH and I (and baby!) time, dog too! She is a week old already. Crazy!

    @hellobeeboston: Wonderful news!!! Congrats!

I'm still hanging out in false labor land. I've had brown discharge and period cramps 5-7 minutes apart, lasting 30 seconds since Thursday night. But they're not getting any more painful - totally able to breathe, talk, and walk through them. DH didn't even realize I was having them for an hour last night while we watched a movie because i wasn't showing any signs of discomfort.
And we're right in the path of the hurricane. Awesome timing huh?? At this point, the baby needs to come tonight/tomorrow or not til midweek!

Just wanted to add that for anyone with sore nipples, the Avent breast shells are amazing! I ordered them and they came today, and they have been great in keeping my sore nips away from fabric (which hurts when I pull it away). I was able to breastfeed on my bad side today with the help of a nipple shield so I am hopeful that things are looking up! Also meeting with another LC on Monday to hopefully figure out how to get LO to latch more deeply on a consistent basis. Hope anyone in the path of the storm is safe!
