@evansjamie: OY. Sorry about the test mama, I'm nervous about mine due to my PCOS. Hoping the metformin helps. Let us know how the 3 hour goes! And I hear ya about the MIL stuff too. Mad support.

@eisrael: WELCOME!!! So happy that you're here and can't wait to find out what you're having along with the rest of team green!!! So so happy for you

@kjpugs: From what the nurse told me, you have to wait at least a week after the one-hour. My office only does it at 8:20 in the morning, and I have to fast starting at midnight. The part I am most upset about is having to be stuck in the arm three times. I don't like having blood taken and my husband won't be able to go with me this time. My parents offered to go with me, but that will be more stressful, not to mention I'll feel like a pregnant teenager with my parents there.

@evansjamie: I'm sorry you didn't get the results you wanted from the one hour. I'm sure the 3 hour will be so different! Do you have a best friend or someone you can take with you for the blood draws? I always wish I could take our dog because he calms me down so much!

@kjpugs: I'm continuing my hunt for Kiwi in person. Today I'm calling Britax and asking where in Ohio or Michigan I can see it in person. If they say no where, which I think they will, I'm going to ask for a fabric sample to see the color! I fixate easily and this stroller is my current obsession. I know DH is right and I'll be happy with black even if I can't find kiwi

@ladybee: Thanks. I'll have to see if my friend can come with me, it all depends on her work schedule. I wish I could take my dog too! I'm going to the library to find a few good books to read while I wait and dressing comfortably. I'm also toying with the idea of taking the whole day off, but I'll only do that if I feel absolutely awful after the test is over.
I ate really badly for the entire week leading up to the test (seriously, we ate out every meal between the 4th and Sunday evening), so this week I'm going back to cooking my meals/bringing my lunches. Except for this Cherry Coke I'm drinking now. Holy cow, I am EXHAUSTED this morning!
grapefruit / 4079 posts
@evansjamie: if it makes you feel better I'm not sure ill pass mine. I'm living on fruit and fruit juice, and carbs. I go next Thursday so I guess Monday ill change my eating. Oh except I'm going out for Mexican Wednesday. Hmmmm. I'm currently obsessed with cherry coke and I'm so tired again. No judgement here on the pop!

@ladybee: Yep, I love my daily glass of OJ. The third trimester fatigue hit me like a train this week. They told me not to change my eating habits so they can get a true reading of if I have GD, but I don't see it as changing since I had changed my habits in the last week when my husband was home. I'm working on cooking more because eating out all the time is A) expensive and B) not that great for you.
grapefruit / 4079 posts
@evansjamie: All I was told was to eat a light breakfast that is high in protein and low in carbs. I guess I'll just do that.

@ladybee: I wanted nothing to do with vegetables or meat my first pregnancy and I still passed- it's definitely possible even if you're living on donuts and watermelon and lemonade like I was!

@kjpugs: Good advice! I generally do try to have my DH handle it, but he tends to take the bandaid approach and not deal with problems. That said, he definitely agrees with me and sees the pressure that his Mom does and will put on us. Did I mention that my MIL has actually suggested that we move in with her and has offered multiple times to 'help' us with the baby (which I appreciate, but fear would turn into her living with us). In the end, I need to remind myself that what matters and what will happen is what's best for our family (the baby, my hubsband and me) and that while I may upset her by not visiting all the time (mind you we see her significantly more than my family) it isn't all about her (harrumph!). And yes, pierogi's are polish!

@evansjamie: First of all, so sorry to hear that you have to go back for more testing. I had my glucose test this AM and am also nervous about my results. Because I was on vacation last week with my fam and went a little crazy with eating (biscuits with sausage gravy, ice cream every day...) I'm a little nervous my results are all out of whack.
Second, I can't believe your MIL smokes around the baby. I actually work in tobacco prevention and feel very strongly about not being around smoke while pregnant, and will probably be even more crazy when lil' one is here. If you ever need ammo about the harms of first, second or even third (that's the residual smoke that lingers in fabrics, etc.), let me know and you can pass it on to your MIL. My MIL is also super needy - emotionally, financially and socially (partially our fault). We've already told our families that they are welcome to visit us in the hospital but we want the first two weeks home alone to figure everything out. I am pretty sure my MIL wants to raise our child and would probably rip the baby out of my hands. She sounds like she would be the same as your MIL. I had to paint the picture for DH...me being home with his Mom, her telling me house to raise our child, force feeding me sausage and potatoes all day, my big mouth and inability to hold back some things.... not to mention I'll likely be working and there's a decent language barrier between us so I would be calling him all the time to either complain or translate. Thankfully, he totally agrees with me and sees that it would be a huge challenge. So good to know that I'm not alone with a challenging MIL!

@evansjamie: Woah! Apologies for the novel there. Clearly, I have something on my mind.
watermelon / 14467 posts
@Sadieloo: I'm extremely against the smoking. My nana passed away from emphysema complications, and let me tell you, there is nothing worse than going to visit your grandmother and finding her barely breathing on the couch at the ripe old age of nine. That cured any and all ideas I might have had that smoking was okay. I visited my MIL at 16 weeks and was nauseated the entire time. She didn't smoke right next to me, but it was in the same room (their home is open concept, so while it was a big room, it was still the same room) and even lit up in the car. My husband keeps telling me that I'll have to tell her that she can't smoke around our baby even in her own house, but he needs to put his big boy pants on because it has to come from him. My mom smokes, but she always goes outside, changes her jacket, and washes her hands.
Also, it's not my MIL who is needy, it's my mother. She's getting better about it. This is her first grandchild, so I understand that she's excited, but I'm dreading telling her to back the heck off because we are the parents and what we say goes.

@evansjamie: I'm so sorry to hear about your Nana. And what an awful and scary thing for a 9 year old to see. I'm so with you too on the DH needing to step it up! Lol on the big boy pants. We've had similar issues in our house I hope that he comes around soon - you already have plenty on your plate!
Ahh...your Mom. My bad! I also have a very, shall we say, opinionated family and have already told them they need to back off and be more supportive of what we think is best (e.g. they think I'm insane to attempt a natural childbirth, cloth diapers, reading books). From everything I've read, especially here on HB, it's all about boundaries and being clear up front about your needs. Hopefully our families will listen

How's everyone feeling now? I never know whether to say I'm 27 weeks+ or in my 28th week, but I too am feeling tired and sluggish. My entire body feels heavy!
watermelon / 14467 posts
@Sadieloo: Your parents sound like my parents. I am also wanting to do cloth diapers, unmedicated childbirth, making baby food, and reading books and my parents think I am crazy. My mom said, "When you have that baby, do you really want to spend all your time doing laundry?" and my dad said, "Pampers at our house." I said, "My kid, my rules, and if I send cloth you will use it."

@Sadieloo: The third trimester fatigue hit me like a train this week. Other than that, I'm mildly swelling because it's so hot here, but I feel okay overall.
kiwi / 726 posts
@evansjamie: Haha. Love it! I've decided to stop sharing some stuff with my family. If they can't realize that I don't have to raise my kid the way they raise theirs, then so be it. I just wish they could at least pretend to see my side of things and not think that I need to do everything the way they did. Nobody's perfect and we need to figure out what works for us and is best for our families ourselves! So thankful I have all of you ladies to vent, commiserate, and compare notes with! If only we could add a cocktail...
kiwi / 726 posts
@evansjamie: I'm feeling pretty similarly. I haven't been sleeping as well as I had before, but I've been skipping the gym which always throws me off.
watermelon / 14467 posts
@Sadieloo: My favorite was when my mom asked if I would use Johnson's because "she used it and I was fine." I don't knock whoever uses it, but I plan on using something like Dr. Bronner's. I've become more sensitive to chemicals as I've gotten older and started eliminating them from my products, so regular baby detergent and J&J isn't going to fly if it makes me itch.
I love my parents, but man, I wish they would think back to when we were brand new and about how much they wanted to do things their way. I'm excited to have them be a part of our lives, but when push comes to shove, it has to be on our terms, not theirs. I suppose my big girl panties will need to come out with my husband's big boy pants in the next 12 weeks (HOLY CRAP).
kiwi / 726 posts
@evansjamie: Seriously! I am so with you. We try to use less toxic products, eat organic and all that within reason. It's so much healthier for us and the planet. I don't know why people wouldn't support it. It's not like we're asking them to change their lives?
I need to get some big girl panties too - the cool, calm and collected ones. Between every day life and pregnancy, lack of sleep and getting ready to move I've become a bit more of a cranky pants and have been speaking my mind, but probably not in the most effective way. My sister tells me all the time how hormonal I am.
Isn't it crazy how close we are? Overall, I can't wait to meet the lil' fella but I have also loved it being just the two of us and having minimal responsibilities. I'm somewhere between super excited, ready, determined, anxious and terrified.

@eisrael: Welcome!!
@kjpugs: I cant wait for your big reveal!
@evansjamie: I took my 1 hour test yesterday, but i dont know how long until i get the results. I'm really hoping i dont have to do the 3 hour test i dont have anymore vacation days to spare.
watermelon / 14467 posts
@Chillybear: Seriously. I have to save all of my vacation for my leave (company policy), so I've been using comp time from events to supplement my sick leave. I won't earn any comp time this month or next, so I really hope I have enough hours between that, sick leave, and any time earned in September to cover my appointments.

Hi @kjpugs and @chillybear. Thanks for the welcome!!
We are 25 weeks now, due 10/20. Was anyone else still having sporadic kicking at 25 weeks? And has anyone else needed a fetal echo?? We have our second one next Thurs, do my glucose test Monday, and Tuesday I am meeting with a pediatrician. I can't believe how close but how far away I still am! Just want this lil one to keep baking!!
watermelon / 14467 posts
@eisrael: I have not needed a fetal echo, but I did have to have two level II ultrasounds due to cysts on her brain and an echogenic cardiac foci. Also, 25 weeks is when I started to feel more kicking, as my placenta is anterior/transverse.
kiwi / 726 posts
woohoo! Just got back my bloods and passed the glucose test!
@chillybear: I tested yesterday AM so hopefully you'll get your results soon. Fingers are crossed that you also pass!
@evansjamie @chillybear: reading your messages about little time off for appointments (I get zero paid maternity leave) really makes me want to campaign for baby, mother and family rights! It's just insane to me that companies are so not health/family friendly!!!
Which reminds me, @evansjamie, any luck with your boss and a flexible work schedule?
watermelon / 14467 posts
@Sadieloo: We need to! The attitude toward family/maternity/paternity leave rights in America is awful. It's not as bad as it was, but I hardly think 12 weeks of unpaid leave is adequate, especially because the cost of living is so high that it's a burden on most of our population.
As far as flexible schedules go, no, there has been no more talk. I will be allowed to take a full 12 weeks of leave (two of those weeks will be paid because I have to use my vacation time concurrently with my unpaid time), but working from home is not an option with my supervisor. I'm casually looking for other positions, and after my leave is over I will be actively searching for a new position.
kiwi / 726 posts
@evansjamie: I wonder if we could mobilize the hellobee community. Totally agree with you -- 12 weeks is not enough! I keep thinking that I need to start my own business that is family friendly. Policy change is difficult, so maybe it's better to lead by example and have family friendly work environments.
From your earlier posts I think you do a lot of editing or something? I live in the NYC area but feel like I've seen a lot of copyediting positions on craigslist. I think some of them are WFH/PT as well.
pomegranate / 3032 posts
@Sadieloo: @evansjamie: My company is fairly family friendly but are pretty stingy with paid time off. I'm considered hourly and we can work flexible schedule during the week as long as we meet 40 hours. anything over usually you can get paid time + 1/2 or bank it as due time, but lately we've been on an overtime freeze so if you work over its straight time... I've just been leaving early on fridays if i have extra for the week. We get no sick days and when i started we got 1 week paid vacation but the company shut down for a week over 4th of july (so you had to take the week then or use banked time) now i've been here 7 years and i've accrued 3 weeks paid vacation but no matter how many years i work here i hit the max on that. Unfortunately, in the last 2 months i've used a week of that for my hospital stay and another week for vacation plus a couple days for dr appts/ultrasounds. I think i have 3 days left for the year. I'm only taking 10-11 weeks maternity leave but 6-8 will be covered with short term disability the rest will be unpaid.

Are anyone else's feet swelling? yesterday and today my feet are so swollen and sore i've been doing a lot of data entry at my desk and i'm making it a solid point to get up and move around more today.
coffee bean / 33 posts
@chillybear mine have been swelling on and off, when you can put your feet up during the day (I keep mine up under my desk) and if they really swell I put them on the arm rest of the couch so they are over my heart and I put ice on them for about 20 minutes. I do it a max of 3 times. Hope it helps!
@evansjamie I had the level 2 as well, do they do anything for the cysts? Sorry I'm coming on so late. We have the echo bc heart problems on my husbands side. We have to have a second bc they didn't get all the pictures they would like.
Anyone recommend any books I should be reading now? I have heard what to expect in the first year and the happiest baby...what about breast feeding books?
kiwi / 726 posts
@Chillybear: Sigh...unpaid maternity leave. The government or companies, or someone really needs to step it up and pay for that stuff. Or we should all move to Europe
Also, I haven't been swelling too much -- I think, but I tend to wear flip flops so it's hard to tell.
kiwi / 726 posts
@eisrael: you sound like you are really on top of things! I still need to look for a pediatrician... As far as books, I am hoping for a natural childbirth and highly recommend Ina May Gaskin's books. I'm reading Bringing up Bebe right now and really liking it. Would love to hear what others are reading!!
watermelon / 14467 posts
@eisrael: For the cysts, we were just seeing of they resolved (the did).
@Chillybear: I'm starting to swell, but my right swells more than my left. I try to keep my feet up at home.
I'm reading The Birth Partner, the LLL breast feeding book, and trying to get through In May's guide to breast feeding. I liked her guide to childbirth, but am having a hard time with the breast feeding book.
