@evansjamie: I'm craving foods I don't even like right now!! (I ended up not eating because I was scared to sway the results!)
watermelon / 14467 posts
Well. I failed my 3-hour test. I failed on the second hour, my blood sugar was 164 and they like it to be under 150. So now I have to test my glucose 4 times a day, and they are mailing me the GD diet, which is an 1800 calorie diet. I don't normally curse, but I definitely did after I talked to the nurse.
What's worse, if I hadn't called the office looking for my results, I wouldn't have known until Monday, because my midwife is only in this office Monday through Wednesday.
So they are calling in a meter, strips, and lancets to the pharmacy, and mailing me the diet. I got out of going to the education classes because my husband is a diabetic. Also, my husband said I need to talk to an endocrinologist, because calorie diets don't work for diabetics (but acknowledges that he doesn't know much about GD).
This f-ing blows.

@ladybee: I don't weigh myself at home. I'll find out how much I've gained since my last appointment tomorrow. At 22 weeks I had gained 9 net lbs (I lost a little in the first trimester and then gained it back with interest) and I was gently chastised. I started out a good 25 lbs overweight though. I'm really hoping I haven't gained much more.
@evansjamie: I'm sorry. That really, really blows. You have to prick your finger 4 times a day?

@evansjamie: I'm sorry that sucks. at least your husband is being supportive and will be able to help you along the way.
watermelon / 14467 posts
@daniellemybelle: Yes, I have to prick my finger 4 times a day. I'm not even worried about it, it's something that happens in my house daily. I just feel completely blindsided. Up until now, I've had a fairly easy pregnancy, and other than growth ultrasounds have not been considered high risk. I'll find out on Tuesday if this classifies me as high risk, but I do know that I will more than likely not be able to go past my due date, and I was hoping to not be induced.
Now I'm so mad at myself for having Qdoba and ice cream for lunch with some Coke, because it could be bad for Hyla.

@EVANSJAMIE: I am sorry to hear you did not pass. Don't worry too much about the lunch you had today! The upside to the GD diet is that you'll probably be eating healthier than most peeps - not a bad thing!
watermelon / 14467 posts
@mrs. mochi: The nurse wasn't really forthcoming, but she said that since I failed one hour, that meant I failed the whole thing. It wasn't my regular midwife either, it was one on call that I don't like as much who pulled up my results. I'm asking at my appointment on Tuesday.

@evansjamie: I'm so sorry to hear about the results of your test. That really sucks. If I remember correctly from my reading, doctors/experts don't understand what causes GD so don't be hard on yourself -- it could have happened to any of us. Thinking of you!
watermelon / 14467 posts
@Sadieloo: Thank you.
Since I won't get the diet in the mail for a day or so, I'm printing out some guidelines from UCSF, and I'll start recording my food intake on MyFitnessPal (since I have it on my phone/iPad). I'm stopping by Kroger this evening to pick up my prescription.
ETA: If anyone else finds out they have GD, I can provide the link I found. It's clearly written and not hard to understand.
cantaloupe / 6669 posts
@evansjamie: I would be interested in the link because I know the GD diet is good for pregnant ladies even if they don't have GD!
So sorry you are dealing with this, but it's great how proactive you are being!

I'm a little late to the party. lol I was wondering if I can join in with you ladies/soon to be mamas? I'm due the beginning of October and would love to chat with you while we finish out our pregnancies!

@daniellemybelle: Here's the link.

Now that I'm done with my pity party (seriously, called my mom to complain, complained to Tony, my dad, AND my sister) I will enjoy my salad. But the thing that moved to the very top of my must have after labor list is an ice cold Coke Speedy Freeze.
cantaloupe / 6669 posts
@evansjamie: Thanks for the link! Do you like Diet Coke? I know aspartame isn't good but neither is HFCS! I trained myself to drink Diet instead of regular in college by mixing it half & half, then 1/4 Diet 3/4 regular, until I really liked Diet Coke, and now I can't stand regular!
@dreamcatcher: Welcome! Of course you can join! Put yourself on "The List!"
watermelon / 14467 posts
@daniellemybelle: Nope, I am not a fan of diet. I think I'll be okay without it, I just got into the habit of having it again because I was so tired. I am not sleeping very well, I think I'm going to have to pull the blackout shades again. At least now it will be something super special.

@evansjamie: before my endo treated my PCOS with meds they put me on a diet that's pretty much the GD diet. Not fun, but healthy at least. I talked to DH's cousin's wife at the wedding this weekend and she had GD with her 2nd- she said that being on the diet she actually felt a TON better- it's just a pain, obviously. I am so sorry about this Don't beat yourself up at all, at least you're almost 3/4 there, so it's not too bad!!! What meds are they putting you on?

@dreamcatcher: welcome!! What day are you due? Do you know boy or girl? Any other kiddos? Tell all! We love new friends!!!! CONGRATS!
watermelon / 14467 posts
@kjpugs: No meds yet. We're going to see what happens with just the diet right now. My glucose before dinner was 73, and I had a big salad and glass of milk for dinner. I have to test it again in about an hour.
grapefruit / 4862 posts
@evansjamie: gotcha- I must have misread about you picking up meds! Whoops What is a "good" glucose reading, under 130? I think under 130/140 is the test cutoff, right?
watermelon / 14467 posts
@kjpugs: I did pick up a meter, strips, and lancets from the pharmacy, thanks to insurance. The cutoff for 2-hours for my office was under 150 and mine was 164. Every other reading was excellent.

Well, I failed my one hour test. Have to fast and go for my 3 hour on Monday. yup, I'm laying in bed crying to my puppy like a baby.
watermelon / 14467 posts
@ladybee: I was right there with you last week. *hugs* I wasn't too hungry during the test, but I tried to make sure my meals leading up to the fast had a lot of protein (so, I had pasta and chicken for lunch, beans and rice for dinner, and peanut butter toast before bed) and made sure I was hydrated before bed. The drink will be sweeter this time. Bring lots to do in the waiting room.
FWIW, here were my numbers from my test: 75, 168, 164, 123. My particular office considers it a fail if you fail one blood draw (my 164 is what did me in), but some offices have more leeway. Could you find out from your doctor?
I'm sorry!

Hey everyone! Just had my Glucose test on Monday, haven't heard back yet and we had our second Echocardiogram yesterday. The doctor said everything with babies heart looks good from what they can see and I am RELIEVED!!
We are beginning to work on LO room and wanted thoughts on where the best place to get furniture is and what are your themes for babies room?? Anyone on team green got some cute ideas??
Thanks everyone! Stay cool in this crazy heat!!

@DREAMCATCHER: Congrats and welcome!
@EVANSJAMIE: It's interesting how each practice has slightly different cutoffs! The 1-hour cutoff was <180, 2 hour was <155 and 3 hour was <140. I was told that if I failed 2 out of the 4 draws, that I failed the entire 3-hour test. Again, not sure why there's not a standardized protocol for testing
watermelon / 14467 posts
@mrs. mochi: Yeah, I found an document from ACOG in 2011 that states that the failing protocol would be 2 failed blood draws, and I asked the nurse about it this morning. She said it had changed 3 years ago, but I'm still going to ask my midwife at my appointment. I don't want to be a difficult patient, but I want to know why it isn't standardized.

@eisrael: YAY! That's great news!
We're working on the nursery too, ours is gender neutral even though we're having a girl. We're keeping our existing bedding in there (aqua with golden yellow/grey). We picked out furniture at ikea (in a gorgeous greyish wood) and are re-finishing an old dresser, I think white. All our linens, etc, are grey and yellow. I do need to find a white bed skirt that's not ruffley. I hate ruffley stuff on bedskirts!!!! I'm not a big fan of "themed" nurseries either for myself, but I have seen some cute ones with owls/woodlands theme.
grapefruit / 4079 posts
@evansjamie: I didn't ask a lot of questions because I was blindsided. I was told to LOAD UP on carbs the two days before the test, then fast from midnight to the test (expect for water). I know for the one hour test I just took they wanted the number to be below 135 but I didn't get my number or the numbers for next time. I'm so frustrated because I eat well, especially considering how I ate before getting pregnant. The nurse said it's a 50/50 chance for me to pass on Monday.
We're going out of town tomorrow, I have so much to do. I wanted to clean, get the pup cleaned and packed and pack us today plus run errands but now I want to do nothing! I am for sure going to Target, it's my happy place!

@kjpugs: such a good idea...we are actually keeping our room the same color...a yellowish/tan color and are going to go with white furniture...just have to figure out from where and my whole house has trees throughout so we are thinking of doing a large tree decal on the wall between the crib and dresser.
I love the ideas of the aqua/gray/yellows...I like the colors that pop but I'm so much more of a neutral tone person I wish I could be more daring like that!
Our other thing we are working around is Jewish tradition of not bringing anything into the house until baby arrives...so we are finding ways of being creative.
Can't wait to hear other ideas!

@evansjamie: thanks! I am so sorry you have to deal with the testing now. That sucks! I just called today for my Glucose results and now am kicking myself just in case it comes back that I need the 3 hour and I deprive myself of my ice cream when I could have just waited til they called or I see them next week...ugh! Do you have to have shots as well or just the test strips?
watermelon / 14467 posts
@ladybee: I was blindsided too, and I asked if I needed to change my diet before the test, but the nurse told me to eat as I had been so they could get a true reading of if I had GD or not.
@eisrael: Our loose theme is Woodlands and Wildflowers. The bedding I've made so far (quilt and crib skirt), but the sheets are just going to be bright wildflower colors. The room is Carolina Blue, because I just don't feel like painting it, and there is a bookshelf and a refinished dresser. The crib is white.
watermelon / 14467 posts
@eisrael: So far, just test my glucose and control through diet. I think I'm just a slow metabolizer. If that doesn't work, we'll move to medication.
grapefruit / 4862 posts
@evansjamie: I knew someone was doing woodlands! I LOVE your ideas. I think white furniture looks awesome against painted walls. I think because we don't own this house (and have white walls) we are less into all the decorating. I hope we own by the time the baby is older and wants to pick out their paint colors, etc!
grapefruit / 4079 posts
@eisrael: our room has light tan walls and espresso furniture so for our LO we ended up with a whale theme. I wanted to go with no theme and just do plaid but DH felt pretty strongly that he wanted a theme so the whales was our compromise. If we were going to do team green I wanted a animal theme like the two photos I posted.

@ladybee: Oh, man, I'm so sorry to hear that.
I had my 1-hr glucose test today and will find out how I did on Monday. My appointment today went well otherwise. Baby girl is doing great and I have only gained 5 lbs in the past 6 weeks which was really encouraging.
I also asked about the, ahem, underwear problem all of us seem to be having, so the midwife did an exam and then looked at the discharge under a microscope. She said it's not amniotic fluid, not urine, and not an infection. I'm just naturally leaky & gross!
We don't have a nursery theme. The room that will be the baby's room is painted grey-blue. We're keeping it that color and painting wide white stripes on one wall. All furniture (crib, glider & dresser/changing table) is going to be white. I'm not sure what bedding we're going to do yet, but my mom & I are going to make colorful print curtains. I want to do pops of pink against the white & blue-grey background.
@kjpugs: Funny you say that about the bedskirt - I am looking for a crib dust ruffle / bed skirt that is SUPER ruffly! I saw an awesome one on Pinterest I want to recreate. If you've found one you hate, send it to me because I might love it

@evansjamie: sorry to hear about your glucose test! I know it sucks but at least you will be eating healthy and your DH is there to support you. I hope you get more information on Monday, thinking of you!
