@evansjamie: I just don't think there would ever be enough light to make it safe for them out there at night. I should take a picture of it tonight. Picture an L but with really long areas, and they're pitch black. We're a corner lot, no street light help, and no neighbor light help. There are so many plants, a wood pile- lots of places for snakes, not to mention that frogs that come out at night are toxic to dogs. Honestly with the size and awkward shape of the yard I don't know that any amount of light would make me truly comfortable at night, except daylight! I don't let them out at all unsupervised to begin with. I miss our simple, square, well-lit small yard from back in Indy!

@kjpugs: I completely understand! Our backyard is poorly lit. I go out there with a headlamp on when I have to take Bea out at night. Our house was built in 1970, so we have no exterior plugs at all. We're on a corner lot as well. Our front side yard is well lot but not fenced, so I guess I could just walk her there at night.

@evansjamie: if I had one dog I'd probably be ok with headlamp/flashlight. They just LOVE to divide and conquer! It sucks because our front yard is SO well lit! I think the trees in the back make it darker. I just tried to take a picture and couldn't get one even WITH flash! I wish our front was fenced (not allowed per HOA, or even feasible) because the lighting is awesome at night, no problems seeing.

@kjpugs: here's my backyard with our one sad light. I took it maybe three minutes ago. We're close to CST so it stays lighter longer here, but it is DARK when the sun goes down because the bushes are so overgrown. They belong to our neighbor, otherwise they would be gone.

I went to a new chiropractor yesterday, and I'm in LOVE. I'm never going back to my old chiro ever again. These ladies were so nice, the office is super family friendly (the owner even brings her dog every day!), and they were really gentle. I feel a million times better this morning. Like, zero pregnant lady hobbling when I got up this morning. They specialize in pregnant chiropractic care as well as regular chiropractic care, and I loved that there weren't any ridiculous 'therapies' like the water table and roller table that I had to do first before I waited for the chiro to get to me.

@kjpugs: Could you get super long leashes for taking them in the front yard at night so you don't have leave the front porch? Oh, but I remember you said they need prodding to go potty, haha.

Honestly, I think as long as your baby monitor extends as far as you're going... you're fine. I can't remember which Bee blogged a Day in the Life, and she talked about walking her dog around the block with the baby monitor twice a day.

    grapefruit / 4862 posts

@daniellemybelle: lol yeah, I've pretty much exhausted every idea and basically they have to go out for their normal nighttime potty. Monitor it is! My mom told me I was being crazy.

Anyone else's belly button kind of hurt? If I press on it it feels sore/uncomfortable. I have a super-innie that is stretching out a bit, but it doesn't seem to be the stretching that hurts it- just putting pressure on it. Is that weird? If everyone tells me that it's totally strange and just me I'll probably call my OB haha.

@kjpugs: My belly button is sore. It's still an innie, but somehow it's poking through my shirts now. Insane.

Our dog is fairly well trained and behaved. He only barks when people come to the house or he sees dogs walking by the house. in the last 2 weeks we've been training him to sleep on the floor next to me instead of in bed with us and he's been doing wonderful. We've also been trying to get him to wait at the top or bottom of the steps so i can go first. He's a bit scared about large objects - hates trash cans, the vacuum, new furniture.... I doubt he's going to like new the baby apparatus especially if they move of make noise. I really nervous about him walking with the stroller, he's a puller when walking on the leash and at 65lbs a bit hard to handle even after doing training.

@kjpugs: With my belly button I feel like i should be a PSA for teenage girls on why not to get a navel peircing. it looks so weird! and its an awful sensation if i bump it into something

  11. kjpugs

    grapefruit / 4862 posts

@Chillybear: that exactly describes it... just a really bad sensation like kind of like when you hit your funny bone just less painful. BLERG.

And yeah my scar from my piercing is so ugly.

Has anyone had discussions with their doctor about birth plan/preferences yet? If not when do you think is a good time to open that discussion?

  13. avivoca

    watermelon / 14467 posts

@Chillybear: I haven't talked to my midwife yet, but they have tons of signs up in the offices about birth plans and even gave me a sheet to fill out. I should probably start looking at that. Pretty much, I want a healthy mom, a healthy baby, and preferably no interventions or medication. But I'm open to whatever, as long as it's necessary and not because I'm on some doctor's timeline for labor.

@Chillybear: @kjpugs: totally agree on the ugly belly button because of an old piercing. My belly button is very, very close to popping and while it hasn't hurt or felt weird, I have definitely felt the skin on my belly stretching.

@chillybear: I haven't had any convos with my midwife about a birth plan yet. We are also working with a doula and have not yet had our first meeting, which is when I assume we'll discuss all that fun stuff

Hope everyone is feeling well! The temperature has cooled significantly in the NYC area (it's around 66 degrees out) and I feel like a completely different person!

@evansjamie: @chillybear: Forgot to mention - a friend of mine sent me some really helpful info on sample birth plans and other stuff. I am happy to share if you want to send me your email address.

@evansjamie: I'm pretty open to however it goes down, medications, interventions, C-section whatever.... i know those things cant really be controlled. But i want to know what my hospital/doctors will and wont allow.... can i wear my contacts? can we delay clamping? can hubs go with baby if she needs to get tests, NICU, etc? I just dont want to regret not advocating for myself/baby if its something i feel strongly about.

I love all the dog pictures, we will fall into that camp of preparing ours for the baby as well... The biggest thing with her (our english bullie in my profile pic) is that she thinks she's a lot lighter than she actually is but she loves kids, can't get enough of them so I'm not too worried about her. We'll be following a lot of the steps that you guys have already said, bringing scent home etc.

@kjpugs: and @chillybear: I had 2 belly button piercings, one on top & one on the bottom. I agree about a PSA for why you shouldn't do that... Mine is stretching and starting to push out so I have 4 holes that all line up down my stomach... Didn't think about that ahead of time.

@evansjamie: Just sent them! I am really hoping it will stay in the mid 70's low 80's until October.

@Sadieloo: While that would be fabulous, I know that in KY the humidity will be returning just in time for the weekend. Awesome.

I'm tackling refinishing a dresser for Baby Girl's room this week/weekend. I stripped it down to bare wood last fall, stained part of it, and then lost momentum. So now I need to decide if I want to do a two-tone wood look (walnut/oak or walnut/white) or paint the whole thing white, as I'm not going to mess with staining it while I'm pregnant, even with water-based stain and doing it in my garage. I'll post pictures later if I can't decide. It's a mid-century dresser I picked up at the ReStore last year, and I'm hoping to make it mesh with my Jenny Lind crib.

No matter what, I'll be covering whatever in a natural sealer that really seals in odors/VOC's.

Had our 28 week appt today and everything is going well! We are officially counting kicks and got our hospital preregistration papers (which is so weird that we are in the home stretch!)
But wanted to ask, out dr suggested the pertussis vaccine to protect against whooping cough and said its better for baby to do it now. Anyone had this yet? Thoughts?

  25. kjpugs

    grapefruit / 4862 posts

    @eisrael: glad it went well!

My doctor requires it for moms (it's good for 10 years unless you're pregnant then you have it get it again for baby for them to be protected) and for DH to get it too. I had no qualms with it. Whooping cough scares the crap out of me. FYI... it made my arm kill for a day or two!

  26. Chillybear

    pomegranate / 3032 posts

@eisrael: We just had that appt too... I got the TDAP vaccine (which includes tetanus and pertussis) about a month before we started TTC at the urging of my primary care doc. she said our hospital requires it and you would rather have it now and deal with the arm soreness than when your leaving the hospital with a newborn. The last time i had it was before going into college 11 years ago. They also recommend dad and grandparents getting the shot as well esp if they will be spending significant time with the newborn

@eisrael: I need to ask about this at my next doctor's appointment. Thanks for bringing it up!

Here I am at 30 weeks today! I went to the chiropractor on Wednesday, and she said she was surprised my ribs weren't killing me since this little girl is all up in them.

Y'all have been so busy on here lately!!!! I didn't have time to catch up because I've been working in my room for school.

We have a little dog that I'm worried about when baby comes. She is super sweet and precious, but I am worried she will be possessive when others try to see the baby, etc. I don't think she will be jealous of the baby because it will smell like me, but who knows.

I had a complete freak out moment on Tuesday. I was completely convinced that I was leaking amniotic fluid. No real reason, except for I felt a little more "wet" down there, but it was really hot and humid that day, etc.

Called my dad, who is a dr, but he was all, "long distance diagnosis is never a good thing." I did call my dr's office in the morning and the nurse was like everything you are feeling is normal, don't stress, it would be totally different if you were leaking, etc. DH was working that night so I didn't even tell him anything until Wednesday night. He started grinning at me halfway through the story because he could hear how ridiculous it sounded. He did acknowledge that my fear and feelings were rational, but that's about all.

Baby girl was kicking so much yesterday that others could see it. We were at a workshop and she was just bouncing my stomach all over the place.

Next week I have my 1 hour glucose test. Any advice?

    watermelon / 14467 posts

@Jennimac: Eat normally leading up to the test is what my midwife told me. I've been worrying about being more moist down there, but I've been so zen about this pregnancy so I just chalk it up to summertime sweating and generally pregnancy moistness. Baby girl kicks and squirms so much so I guess she's okay.

I will say, I've lost some weight on this diet. My midwife wasn't concerned, baby is growing great and is very active. It's hard to get enough calories if I'm not hungry, so I'm working on being conscious about my snacks/meals and getting enough calories without jacking up my glucose. It's a fine line. I miss corn though.

    cantaloupe / 6669 posts

@Jennimac: I was worried about leaking amniotic fluid too, but my midwife tested my fluid and it's just discharge! And probably some sweat, haha.

My midwife hasn't said anything about any vaccines. I will ask next time!

In other news, we're interviewing two doulas tomorrow. Wish us luck! Anyone have one yet (if you are getting one)? Any interview tips?

  33. avivoca

    watermelon / 14467 posts

@daniellemybelle: I want one, but we're bleeding money right now trying to get a new roof, so I don't know if it will happen.

  34. daniellemybelle

    cantaloupe / 6669 posts

@evansjamie: I have no idea how we are going to pay for it, either, but DH is kind of insisting on it because he has heard from a friend of his that it made it so much easier to support his wife during labor. I am going to ask about payment plans. We're also talking to some doulas who are a little less experienced / well-known so I think their fees are a bit lower than average. Honestly, that didn't happen because of our budget though - apparently we are way late to the game! More than half of the doulas I called were already booked up for October.

  35. avivoca

    watermelon / 14467 posts

@daniellemybelle: I've got one that's not, and she's somewhat cheaper. I need to look into the payment plan as well. My husband doesn't really have an opinion on it, which is extremely frustrating.

@daniellemybelle: Hi, After interviewing two doulas and meeting the one I really want but she's already booked. I'm going to go with the first one I interviewed. Out of sheer laziness and being tired of trying to schedule these interviews. Did you see the Doula post on the boards today? I thought those questions were very helpful. I used questions from the book "Your Best Birth." They are pretty similar if not the same. I'm not sure if the doula thing is worth it, but I'm willing to pay for an extra advocate and someone who actually knows what they are doing in there. My husband and I are both like deer in the headlights. I have a hard time advocating for myself with medical practitioners and I want to labor at home for as long as I can, so for me, the support is worth it.

Just got back from the hospital. UGH. I had a major kick of (I assumed) round ligament pain but paired with soreness/heat in the area. My OB was concerned about the soreness/heat and sent me to triage. Good news is that my vascular system looks great- no blood clots, which was their concern. Baby got monitored too and she sounded great. She did NOT like the monitor and kept kicking it. They did an exam and did find an infection which they think is where the heat/soreness is coming from. Got some antibiotics and hopefully I'll be feeling better. I'll be getting a body pillow type thing for sleeping too because I think that's what set it off- night before last I felt like my positioning triggered the RLP.

Hope everyone else's day has been less crazy!
