OOO group B strep question for you gals- I think I read something in a weekly thing today about penicillin being the treatment. I don't know if I have it yet but I'm allergic to penicillin. Do you think/know if they have another way to treat it? I'm curious but my appt isn't til Friday!

@kjpugs: If you are allergic, there should be something else they can give you for it. My childbirth class instructor said something about broad-spectrum antibiotics being given during labor sometimes, especially if your water has been broken for longer than 18 hours.

@EVANSJAMIE and @CHILLYBEAR: Tylenol PM is basically acetaminophen and diphenhydramine (benedryl), so you should be able to take it while pregnant. I would also think that Tylenol Sinus would be okay - just check what the decongestant/antihistimine in it is. I was told by my OB that I can use Zyrtec for my allergies.

@SADIELOO: Are the effects of pineapple and primrose similar to that of raspberry leaf tea on the uterus? I've been eating pineapple nearly daily for the last 6 weeks! I did just buy a box of raspberry tea leaf last week but haven't tapped into it consider it's been so hot here lately!

This weekend I made great strides in completing the nursery - I washed all the baby sheets, blankets, towels, etc. plus the first 3 months worth of clothing. We hung up some shelves and art. I have a few more finishing touches and I'll be ready to share some photos. I still need to pack my bag...exactly 30 more days to EDD!

@Lozza: You know, I just kind of assumed LO would come to the hospital, but you've given me food for thought. Especially since my ILs are not confident drivers, and they have up until now refused to drive with LO in the car. And you're right, I wonder if he would flip out, especially when it was time to leave and we didn't come with him ... I think maybe now I'm leaning toward just introducing them when we get home!

@kjpugs: I'm also allergic to penicillin, so I was on clindamycin instead (which is kind of a pain since it has to be given more frequently).
If you're determined to be GBS+ and are allergic to penicillin, your OB really should be sending off a specimen for culture and resistance testing to determine the best drug for you, since there are resistant strains.

@Mrs. Yoyo: DH and I have always assumed LO would come, but I'm really leaning towards him NOT coming right now. I think he will be totally fine spending two or three nights with my parents (he's done it before), so it seems like kind of an unnecessary interruption with very little benefit other than DH and I getting to see him. I think it makes more sense to bring them if you have someone temporarily watch your LO while you're in labor, and then your DH goes home and stays with LO while you're in the hospital (because then DH goes back home with LO), but since DH and I both want him to remain at the hospital with me and baby, it seems unnecessary...
(If I have my kid before you have yours, I'll let you know what we end up doing and how it turned out!)

@mrs. mochi: Woohoo! Doesn't it feel great when you get all that laundry done? It's so nice.

I am SO READY to be done. I'm only 35 weeks but I swear once I hit 37, I am doing anything and everything anyone on the internet says might help induce labor (everything that is safe, that is).
That said, what tips/suggestions have you heard to get labor going? What should I try?
(With my first, my water broke at 38.5 weeks at night after I'd had acupuncture first thing that morning- I have no idea whether they could be related but I'll try anything so I'm totally doing it again!)

@EVANSJAMIE: So much laundry at once! It was exhausting. Although thanks to a good mommy-friend and her advice, the little socks were manageable because I put all of those in a delicates bag - kept them all together!

@Lozza: I am bouncing on my birth ball like it's going out of style. Really, I'd like it if she stayed in until September 30, but I am DONE. I'm tired, my back hurts, I can't sleep, I pee all the time, my clothes aren't fitting, and it's hot so I'm super uncomfortable. I can't take a deep breath and I'm analyzing my stomach hourly to see if she's dropped any at all. I'm going to be looking up these old wive's tales too.

@mrs. mochi: I need to try that!

I'm starting to get aggravated with my in-laws. They were supposed to come visit over Labor Day weekend and bring us some things, but they didn't because they weren't feeling well. So then they said they would come this past weekend, but then they didn't because my FIL wasn't feeling well. Then he goes and goes fishing on Sunday, and I'm just so mad. My MIL is still deciding what she's going to get us, either a bassinet or a Moses basket, but doesn't know if she's going to get them off my registry or from Walmart. I feel totally ungrateful, but at the same time, I just want her to send these things so I know what I still need to get!

I'm due in 3.5 weeks and we have nowhere in our room for little miss to sleep right now. I have no bottles since she bought a bunch, she's sending a ton of clothes that all need to be washed because they've been sitting in her smokey house and I'm just tired. I wish I wasn't so ragey today.

My husband is upset too because they don't tell us until the day before that they won't be coming. I'm upset because they went to Myrtle Beach last month but can't travel 5 hours for a weekend to see us?

    Argh.

  11. mrs. mochi

    cherry / 175 posts

@EVANSJAMIE: Would it be out of the question to ask them if they could meet in the middle? Perhaps that'd be a hint that you'd like to get the ball rolling!

  12. avivoca

    watermelon / 14467 posts

@mrs. mochi: I'd have to see if that would be an option.. They don't really travel outside of their county at all. Barring Myrtle Beach, I think the last time they ventured to the half-way point was when I lived in my college town the first time and that was five years ago.

With that, my husband would have to be the one to go, because my midwife doesn't want me going more than an hour from the hospital and the halfway point is 2.5 hours from here.

  13. mrs. mochi

    cherry / 175 posts

@EVANJAMIE: Yeah, sounds like your husband would have to go on this mission solo! Hopefully for your sake, your in-laws aren't planning on bringing the stuff when they come to see baby???

  14. avivoca

    watermelon / 14467 posts

@mrs. mochi: Oh dear, I sincerely hope not. At this point, I don't even know if they would come to the hospital.

What does the pineapple, primrose oil and rasberry tea leaf do?

Our nursery is almost finished, just have to hang the pictures and find a place for the stuff on the floor.

Is anybody using the special baby detergent or are you using your regular detergent on baby stuff? Trying to decide if its a worth it to invest is a special one just for baby.

  16. avivoca

    watermelon / 14467 posts

@Redmini1: I switched completely to Country Save powdered detergent since I'm using cloth diapers. However, I can't buy it locally, so I might go to Charlie's Soap as long as it doesn't cause a reaction to my skin.

  17. mrs. mochi

    cherry / 175 posts

@REDMINI1: I have used Ecos for my laundry (naturally derived, biodegradable detergent); however, it is lavender scented. I have found Ecos for baby which is free and clear - no dyes or fragrance - and I have used that to wash my baby stuff. I think the key is no dyes, fragrance, etc. I know some moms that use Tide or All free and clear. I don't think it's necessary to buy Dreft.

Hey ladies! My shower was this weekend and I was blown away! We had about 50 ladies total and it was so precious and fun. I was so happy! I'm worn out today though.

Going to the midwife again tomorrow morning for Group B strep testing as well to follow up on my cyst. It hurts so much less now and I am gleeful over the relief! That was such a tough week.

@Lozza: Clindamycin is what I have been taking for my pilondial cyst. Wonder if it will mess with my GBS results?

  19. avivoca

    watermelon / 14467 posts

@daniellemybelle: I'm so glad you had a great shower! I'll find out tomorrow if I am GBS +, but I hope that since I didn't hear from them prior to now that means I don't have it.

  20. Lozza

    pear / 1837 posts

@evansjamie: They no longer bother treating GBS prior to labor and delivery, so even if you are positive, it's not necessarily something they'd call about since it doesn't change your current management at all.

Anyone have a name picked out that they don't mind sharing? DH has recently started pushing for Elijah/Eli, I like Daniel, but I think we're going to end up compromising on Nathaniel/Nate.
It's annoying- we already used the boy's name we liked best, and I had all these girl names I wanted to use! (DH told me we could give boy #2 one of the girl names I like as a middle name, because DH seems to think that middle names never ever come up in life, but I shot down that idea).

  21. avivoca

    watermelon / 14467 posts

@Lozza: I'll share the name! Our daughter will be named Hyla Sophia. My husband picked out her first name, it's a genus of tree frog. I picked out the middle name and I thought that it flowed nicely with our last name. I love all the names you picked!

@evansjamie: I love your name so much! Is it pronounced like Kyla?

@Lozza: I love the name Nate!!! I actually love all your choices though.

I WISH I could share baby girl's name with you guys but don't want to risk it if any of my in-laws stalk on here. I will share right away when she's born though, promise! I am just itching to shout it from the rooftops.

  23. avivoca

    watermelon / 14467 posts

@kjpugs: It is! A lot of people ask if we're saying Isla, but it is like High-la. I love it.

Also, I considered Isla, but I couldn't get Jurassic Park 3 out of my head and couldn't name my daughter anything associated with a dinosaur infested island.

  24. kjpugs

    grapefruit / 4862 posts

@evansjamie: LOL I think I need to re-watch Jurassic Park because I don't remember Isla in that! And I just love Hyla. I love Kyla too but I went to HS with a girl named Kyla and it would be WEIRD if I used it! Just gorgeous, classy sounding names tho.

@Lozza @evansjamie @kjpugs : We've had a name picked out since even before I was pregnant. Our son will be named Arthur Dent Hall after the main character from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Yes, we're huge fans of Douglas Adams. We've been calling him by name since we found out he's a boy. And I just ordered a cute space themed vinyl decal for above his crib. I can't wait to get it up!

@Lozza: I'll share! We had about 5 girls names that we both really liked so I'm not surprised baby is a boy. We didn't agree on anything. I LOVED Hunter, Garrett, Conner, etc. DH hated them. We are going with Matthew.

  27. Mrs. Yoyo

@Lozza: hahaha same same with the names. We used the one boy name we liked, and I had all these girl names floating around my brain! Alas. We have one picked with 90 percent certainty, and we both like it ok but by no means as much as the first time

@ladybee: I like Matthew! I am going by the Hellobee list. So far I have everything for baby but still need to get the stuff for me/my husband since I'm using most of it daily. I'll throw some PJ pants in the bag tonight.

    @TFrances: That's so cool!

@evansjamie: thanks! DH really wanted a classic, catholic name. I know I'll love it once he's here. For your hospital bag, are you just using a duffle bag or small suitcase?

@mrs. mochi: So I'm getting all my foods and things confused. Here's what I just read (I can't keep anything straight in my head anymore):

Evening Primrose Oil— found in 500 mg capsules. These may be taken orally or vaginally - one to three capsules 3 times each day for the last 4 weeks of pregnancy to soften and thin the cervix.

Raspberry Leaf Tea— drink to your heart’s content. Used to help organize contractions and tone the muscles of the uterus.

Pineapple is not supposed to induce labor, but rather is thought to be a cervical ripening agent that stimulates prostaglandins, although this has not been proven.

@Lozza: Lol. A girls name for the middle name? I mean, I love that your Hubs was thinking outside the box and trying to come up with a solution, but that is funny. We have picked out a name - Alexander Jozef. I'd like to call him Alex and DH wants AJ. We'll see what happens when he's on the outside! we also thought of Nate as one of our name options. Love that name!

Quick appointment update before I crash. I am GBS negative (YAY), so I can labor at home for about 16 hours once my water breaks. Baby girl's HR was in the 150's and movement was great. I measured a tiny bit smaller this week, just over 36 CM and I was 37 last week. I've also dropped a couple of pounds, but nobody is concerned.

My midwife was concerned about my lack of sleep and my increasing cold symptoms, so she gave me an excuse for today and I am currently home resting. The past three nights I have gotten between 3-4 hours of broken sleep and with my lungs being squished, I can't take as deep of breaths. Apparently, there is a bug going around that takes about a week to get over. So I'm loaded up on saline spray, Tylenol PM, and lotion tissues. Hopefully I can take a good nap today and feel refreshed for the rest of the week.

I've decided to make a tissue pom pom and paper lantern cluster to put in the corner above the glider. I think it'll help balance the room out a bit. Why do I keep adding things to my to-do list???
